Abstract:
Purpose – Guided by the proposed opportunity and resource integrative entrepreneurial growth model, the purpose of this paper is to explore how different opportunity type firms grow integrally and what the laws for different opportunity integration growth modes are. Design/methodology/approach – A multiple case study on six firms in information and communication technologies industry in China is conducted. Findings – Three types of entrepreneurial opportunities exist. These are identification type opportunity, discovery type opportunity, and creation type opportunity. Entrepreneurship among the three types of entrepreneurial opportunities operates under different laws. For each type of entrepreneurial opportunity, firms need to balance the two growth modes, namely, the opportunity identification and assessment/resource allocation mode and the opportunity utilization and resource identification/acquisition mode, in order to achieve a leveraging effect. Research limitations/implications – Vertical comparison is missing. Practical implications – Firms need to balance the two growth modes, namely, opportunity identification and assessment and resource allocation mode and opportunity utilization and resource identification and acquisition mode, to achieve leverage effect. Originality/value – This paper integrates system theory with entrepreneurship research and proposes the opportunity and resource integrative entrepreneurial growth model. This model is helpful, both in aiding firms to follow the laws for entrepreneurial opportunities and to identify entrepreneurial opportunities. The business model plays a vital role in entrepreneurship. Firms taking advantage of the Internet of Things are more likely to gain a competitive advantage and to achieve success in their entrepreneurial activities.

Abstract:
Purpose Theory predicts that balancing exploratory and exploitative learning (i.e., ambidexterity) across alliance portfolio domains (e.g. value chain function, governance modes) increases firm performance, whereas balance within domains decreases performance. Prior empirical work, however, only assessed balance/imbalance within and across two domains. The purpose of this study is to determine if theory generalizes beyond specific domain combinations. The authors investigated across multiple domains to determine whether alliance portfolios should be imbalanced toward exploration or exploitation within domains or balanced across domains. The authors also extended prior research by exploring whether the direction of imbalance matters. Current theory only advises managers to accept imbalance without helping with the choice between exploration and exploitation. Design/methodology/approach Hypotheses are tested using fixed-effects generalized least squares (GLS) regression analysis of a large 13-year panel sample of Fortune 500 firms from 1996 to 2008. Findings With respect to the balance between exploration and exploitation within each of the five domains investigated, imbalanced alliance portfolios had higher firm performance. No evidence was found that balance across domains relates to performance. Instead, for four of the five domains, imbalance toward exploration related positively to firm performance. Originality/value An alliance portfolio that allows for exploration in some domains and exploitation in other domains appears more difficult to implement than prior theory suggests. Firms benefit mostly from using the alliance portfolio for exploratory learning.

Abstract:
The paper presents comparative analysis of technological parameters of depletion and water-oil displacement modes during the exploitation of oil banks in gas-condensate deposit with horizontal well in gas-free production rates based on the three-phase multi-component filtration model. In water-oil displacement regime the oil recovery factors were higher compared to the depletion mode. The development profitability was justified. The increase of oil recovery factor in water-oil displacement regime is achieved due to the weak rate of flooding in well production and unrecoverable capacity of the fluid injected into the reservoir. The practicability of oil banks exploitation in gas-condensate deposit in gas-free rates at the first stage of development in depletion and in water-oil displacement modes at further stage correspondingly is justified.

Abstract:
The paper investigates influence of age specific harvest on the dynamics of populations with density dependent regulation of birth rate. We consider the population which by the end of each reproduction season, consists of two age groups: juveniles (immature individuals) and adults (participants of the reproduction process). A harvest rate growth of any age class is shown to give, as a rule, the dynamics stabilization. However, the system with harvesting demonstrates multimodality phenomenon as well as the population model without exploitation. The phenomenon means different dynamic modes are observed with the same values of the population parameters. As a result, some difficulties occur in predicting population dynamics, because harvest can lead to significant changes of population size due to shifting current population size from one attraction basin to another. To neutralize the oscillations emerged is necessary to change the current population size so that it falls into the attraction basin of the fixed point. The stability loss way of model with juvenile harvesting does not depend on the harvest rate value and is completely determined by the intensity of competitive relationships between the age classes. In the case of adult exploitation, a higher harvest rate can result in growing stationary population size. The changing the time of adult harvesting can lead to both the dynamics population stabilization and the occurrence of fluctuations. Exploitation before the reproduction season allows to have more yield than after reproduction season because mature age group size is higher. Conditions when the age specific harvest gives the maximum sustainable yield are considered.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2007.

This thesis explores the efficiency potential inherent to series elastic actuators during oscillatory tasks. Series elastic actuators have a spring intentionally placed at the actuator output that provides good force resolution and filters out high frequency disturbances from the environment. These properties are essential for robotic applications in which interactions with the environment are unknown, because they allow the actuators to maintain stable force control while protecting the drive train from harmful loadings. The spring can also be used to store energy similar to the way animals use their tendons during locomotory tasks. This thesis shows that by operating the actuators at the appropriate frequency, the storage of energy by the springs can be translated into large efficiency gains for the actuator. To show the efficiency gains of the actuator, a control scheme was developed that is capable of operating the actuators at and above their resonant frequency. The control scheme was based on spring force control allowing it to provide protection to the drive train while being robust to changes in link inertia due to manipulator configuration or environmental interactions.
(cont.) The control scheme was designed to be sufficient for use in real world applications so as to provide experimental results that are representative of operation on a robot vehicle. The control scheme was implemented on a single-link benchtop test stand which was used to demonstrate the performance of the actuators. Experimental results are presented that demonstrate the conditions under which efficient actuation is possible. By comparing the experimental data to models of the hardware, the mechanisms through which power was lost were determined. The results indicate that at resonance there is the potential to achieve up to twice the efficiency obtained by a rigid actuator, however, in order to do so extra attention is needed in both hardware design and control.

Abstract:
Over the last two decades cosmology has been transformed from a data-starved to a data-driven, high precision science. N This transformation happened thanks to improved observational techniques, allowing to collect progressively bigger and more powerful data sets. Studies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies have played, and continue on doing so, a particularly important and impactful role in this process. The huge data sets produced by recent CMB experiments pose new challenges for the field due to their volumes and complexity. Its successful resolution requires combining mathematical, statistical and computational methods aIl of which form a keystone of the modern CMB data analysis. In this thesis, I describe data analysis of the first data set produced by one of the most advanced, current CMB experiments, POLARBEAR and the major results it produced. The POLARBEAR experiment is a leading CMB B-mode polarization experiment aiming at detection and characterization of the so-called B-mode signature of the CMB polarization. This is one of the most exciting topics in the current CMB research, which only just has started yielding new insights onto cosmology in part thanks to the results discussed hereafter. In this thesis I describe first the modern cosmological model, focusing on the physics of the CMB, and in particular its polarization properties, and providing an overview of the past experiments and results. Subsequently, I present the POLARBEAR instrument, data analysis of its first year data set and the scientific results drawn from it, emphasizing my major contributions to the overall effort. In the last chapter, and in the context of the next generation CMB B-mode experiments, I present a more systematic study of the impact of the presence of the so-called E-to-B leakage on the performance forecasts of CMB B-modes experiments, by comparing several methods including the pure pseudospectrum method and the minimum variance quadratic estimator. In particular, I detail how the minimum variance quadratic estimator in the case of azimuthally symmetric patches can be used to estimate efficiently parameters, and I present an efficient implementation based on existing parallel algorithms for computing Spherical Harmonic Transforms

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on a key component of societal relations, namely the creation and exploitation of economic leverage. It explores how, in the context of protracted territorial conflicts, relevant actors craft it and use it. Finally, it examines to what ends economic leverage is exploited, if at all. Generally, economic leverage can translate into a considerable form of power. This thesis scrutinizes how this occurs in more specific contexts post-ceasefire agreement conflict protraction, and what the finalities of the actors concerned are. It does so by focusing on a number of relevant actors, and by treating conflict protraction as the specific context in which economic power is exploited. Two cases are examined, namely those of the South Ossetian and the Abkhaz protracted conflicts. This thesis does not focus on the historical conditions and political events that caused the separatist conflicts in Georgia, but on their consequences and on the periods following the ceasefire agreements (signed respectively in 1992 and 1993), which came to a close with the Russo-Georgian war over South Ossetia in August 2008.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Analysis of human societies and horse populations interactions is viewed in the Western Europe Late Glacial context, an unstable climatic and environnemental period. The diversity of equids have been realised toward three areas : the Paris Basin, the Switzerland Plateau, and the Charente. The usual morphometrics analysis of several anatornical parts come out onto a regional pattern of horse populations, distinct of the specific reference, Equus caballus arcelini, Guadelli 1991. The distribution areas fragmentation imply a low level of genetic flux between them, a high démographie density and the absence of large scale migrations. On the other hand, it could be pointed out that all those horses evolved in the same kind of habitats (lowland meadows, river banks, marshes). The analysis of the equids exploitation allow to understand the socio-economic features of Paris Basin's Madgalenian and early Azilian bands, helped by a comparative study of Switzerland Plateau Magdalenians. In those areas, the evidence of large butchery sites show a year round exploitation of horse harems, killed during collective hunts. Conversely, in the reindeer dominated sites, horses have been obtained by less ambitious hunts. The "functionnal complementary" model of Madgalenian sites seems to be the more probable, despite the radiocarbon plateau chronological uncertainties. In the early Azilian case, the exploitation strategies are distinguished by less efficient but repeted approach or chase hunts, at différent seasons. The probable coexistence of those two Paris Basin cultural entities could have been possible thanks to the large horse populations presence

Abstract:
In Peru and elsewhere, extractive industries are at the core of governmental projects and of mobilizations that seem to oppose frontally. However, a focus from the bottom-up, at the level of face-to-face interactions and involved people’s daily life, confirms the necessity to overcome the idea of an absolute dichotomy between the omnipotent dominant and the unanimously-resisting dominated. Based on an ethnography of the oldest oil concession’s surroundings in the Peruvian Amazon, this research analyses jointly protest and government of populations, reciprocal adjustments between modalities of (re)production of a social order at the national boundaries and practices of protest that seem to threaten governmental projects. Amazonia’s inhabitants and their representatives, when they protest against industrial contamination, invoke the state as the cause of the problem, the mediator as well as the solution. They “sit the state down” in the villages, through its representatives, to whom they express their grievances. In this way, they contribute to consolidating state power at the edge of the nation, to establishing its territorial, symbolical and practical bases. The daily life of the villages, their vicinity with the industrial world, as well as extraordinary moments of protest, eventually unveil the coproduction of the state by the inhabitants of the borders, by their representatives and by the governmental spokesperson, in the intertwining of protest and institution of extractive order

Abstract:
Thermoacoustic instabilities are a limitation on the operability of any combustion system, especially under lean fuel conditions. The ability to avoid or eliminate rumble, especially at an early stage of the development of a combustion system, is a useful capability. The occurrence of thermoacoustic modes can be predicted by an acoustic network of the combustion system, where the aerodynamic/flame interaction is described by a flame transfer function. In the EC funded KIAI project a series of tasks were performed to measured flame transfer functions of lean fuel injectors with the aim of predicting thermoacoustic Eigen modes in a full annular combustion rig. The linear flame transfer functions, of the injector, were measured at Cambridge University on a single intermediate pressure sector siren rig via OH* and CH* chemiluminescence and unsteady pressure measurements. These flame transfer functions were implemented in a low order acoustic network of the rig in the form of an inverse FFT method. The acoustic network uses linear perturbation theory, where the Eigen modes are solved by satisfying the acoustic boundary conditions. Alternatively, the acoustic network can be used to predict the forced pressure response of the system. Finally, the network was used to predict the frequencies, stability and spectra in a full annular combustor rig, utilising the same injector.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper argues for a better understanding of entrepreneurship in international entrepreneurship – the ‘E in IE’. The paper suggests that the central role of opportunity formation and exploitation in entrepreneurship research should be fully explored in IE. The entrepreneur-firm-opportunity nexus in internationalisation is examined through an opportunity-based approach (OBA). This suggests that the process of internationalisation may be conceived as the formation and exploitation of international entrepreneurial opportunities. The subjective, entrepreneurial ability to create an imagined future – ‘prospection’ – is examined to show how entrepreneurs use prospection to: creatively imagine combinations of firm capabilities and market opportunities to form entrepreneurial opportunities. A typology of entrepreneurial opportunity formation is advanced which distinguishes between opportunity discovery, development, construction, and creation. The paper concludes by suggesting how the OBA can help explain the choice of foreign markets, early internationalisation, speed of internationalisation, and foreign entry modes.

In ASME 2011 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference and Bath/ASME Symposium on Fluid Power and Motion Control. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/dscc2011-6154.

Abstract:
Nonlinearities inherent in soft-tissue interactions create roadblocks to realization of high-fidelity real-time haptics-based medical simulations. While finite element (FE) formulations offer greater accuracy over conventional spring-mass-network models, computational-complexity limits achievable simulation-update rates. Direct interaction with sensorized physical surrogates, in offline or online modes, allows a temporary sidestepping of computational issues but hinders parametric analysis and true exploitation of a simulation-based testing paradigm. Hence, in this paper, we develop Radial-Basis Neural-Network approximations, to FE-model data within a Modified Resource Allocating Network (MRAN) framework. Real-time simulation of the reduced order neural-network approximations at high temporal resolution provided the haptic-feedback. Validation studies are being conducted to evaluate the kinesthetic realism of these models with medical experts.

Full text
Abstract:
The dynamic frequency response of a nonlinear piezoelectric amplification mechanism capable of over 150 fold displacement amplification is presented. Research to amplify the displacement of piezoelectric actuators has included flexure based approaches that utilize geometric configuration, and has included frequency based approaches that utilize resonance and small steps to contribute to a full motion. The dynamic operation of the actuator presented here utilizes the benefits from both of these methods. The geometry allows for great displacement amplification, and operation within a specific frequency band allows for the exploitation of a nonlinear singularity. The actuator has three distinct modes of dynamic operation, one of which achieves significant displacement by utilizing momentum to pass through a singular configuration. A nonlinear model, linear models for each frequency response mode, and multiple prototypes are presented. This actuator operating in the high displacement frequency band is promising as an input actuator for stepping mechanisms.

Abstract:
The data of applied research aimed at new laser surface modification technologies development are presented in this paper. Both polymer and metal surface coatings formed on steel parts under laser radiation have been tested and their influence on the friction conditions, reliability, bearing capacity and durability of the drive item have been investigated. The relationships between laser treatment modes, coatings composition and various exploitation parameters have been obtained. It is shown that the worked out technologies, to be used in production, provide power transmissions bearings with increased reliability and operating properties.
