Full textAs the most abundant source of carbon in our planet, without any competition with food or feed supplies, cellulose is a viable alternative to replace the widely used and unsustainable fossil-based polymers. However, the majority of researchers working on this fascinating biopolymer fail to incorporate sustainability considerations during cellulose chemical transformation to make materials. The consequence is a shift of the “environmental burden” to other stages of the process cycle. Therefore, to ensure sustainability, both the renewability feature of cellulose as well as sustainability considerations concerning its transformation processes are necessary. This implies to consider the solvent, the reactants, the derivatization process and the wastes produced as well as an evaluation of the suitability of the resultant products, for which relevant properties have to be obtained to compete with existing alternatives. This thesis is therefore divided into three main parts (solubilization, regeneration and derivatization of cellulose), and addresses the various concerns of sustainability during cellulose transformation with an end-goal of making processable materials.In the first part of the thesis, a sustainable solvent system for cellulose was investigated. In this regard, a detailed optimization study of the DBU-CO2 switchable solvent system was performed using in-situ infrared spectroscopy. Upon optimization, up to 8 wt.% cellulose could be dissolve within 15 min at 30 °C using low CO2 pressure (2-5 bar). What makes this solvent system sustainable, when compared to other classical cellulose solvents, includes: easier recyclability by simple release of the CO2 pressure, fast and mild solubilization and lower cost compared to ionic liquids. Finally, by successfully trapping the formed in-situ cellulose carbonate using an electrophile, a clearer understanding of this solvent system was established.The successful optimization of a sustainable solvent system for cellulose led to the second part of the thesis: the regeneration of cellulose. Here, the general solubilization and coagulation ways followed by freeze-drying was adopted to prepare cellulose aerogels. Various processing conditions such as cellulose concentration, coagulating solvent and super base, were investigated on their effect of the aerogels properties (density, morphology, pore size). The obtained results showed aerogels with densities between 0.05 and 1.2 g/cm3, porosities between 92 and 97 % and pore sizes between 1.1 and 4.5 μm. In addition, from scanning electron microscopy (SEM), open large macroporous inter-connected cellulose networks were observed.The derivatization of cellulose to make thermally processable materials is covered in the third part of the thesis. Als Kohlenstoffquelle mit der größten Verfügbarkeit auf unserem Planeten, ohne Konkurrenz zur Lebens- und Futtermittelversorgung, stellt Cellulose eine interessante Alternative dar, um die vielfältig genutzten, nicht-nachhaltigen Polymere auf Erdölbasis zu ersetzen. Die Mehrheit der Forscher, die mit diesem faszinierenden Biopolymer arbeiten, vernachlässigt allerdings Überlegungen zur Nachhaltigkeit in die chemische Modifizierung von Cellulose bei der Herstellung von Materialien zu integrieren. Die Konsequenz dessen ist eine Verlagerung der Umweltbelastung auf andere Abschnitte des Prozess-Zyklus. Um Nachhaltigkeit sicherzustellen, sind deshalb sowohl der erneuerbare Aspekt von Cellulose als auch Überlegungen zur Nachhaltigkeit im Reaktionsprozess wichtig. Dies beinhaltet die Berücksichtigung des Lösungsmittels, die Reaktanden, des Derivatisierungsprozesses, die produzierten Abfälle sowie eine Beurteilung der Nachhaltigkeit der resultierenden Produkte, die relevante Eigenschaften aufweisen müssen um mit bestehenden Alternativen konkurrieren zu können. Diese Arbeit ist deshalb in drei Teile gegliedert (Löslichkeit, Rückgewinnung und Derivatisierung von Cellulose) und befasst sich mit den verschiedenen Aspekten der Nachhaltigkeit während der Umsetzung von Cellulose mit dem Ziel, verarbeitbare Materialien herzustellen.Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wurde ein nachhaltiges Lösungsmittelsystem für Cellulose untersucht. In diesem Zusammenhang wurde eine detaillierte Optimierungsstudie des DBU-CO2 schaltbaren Lösungsmittelsystems mittels in-situ Infrarot Spektroskopie durchgeführt. Nach der Optimierung konnten bis zu 8 Gew.-% Cellulose innerhalb von 15 min. bei 30°C und einem niedrigen CO2-Druck (2-5 bar) gelöst werden. Verglichen mit klassischen Lösungsmitteln für Cellulose weist dieses Lösungsmittelsystem verschiedene nachhaltige Aspekte auf: Einfaches Recycling durch entfernen des CO2-Drucks, schnelles und mildes Auflösen und geringere Kosten als ionische Flüssigkeiten. Durch erfolgreiches Abfangen des in-situ gebildeten Cellulose-Carbonats mit einem Elektrophil, konnte schließlich ein besseres Verständnis dieses Lösungsmittelsystems erreicht werden. Die erfolgreiche Optimierung eines Lösungsmittelsystems für Cellulose führte zum zweiten Teil der Arbeit: der Regenerierung von Cellulose. Hier wurde der bereits mit anderen Systemen beschriebene Weg von Lösen und Ausfällen, gefolgt von Gefriertrocknen übernommen, um Cellulose-Aerogele herzustellen. Verschiedene Bedingungen bei der Verarbeitung wie die Cellulose-Konzentration, Lösungsmittel zum Ausfällen und die Superbase und deren Effekt auf die Eigenschaften der Aerogele (Dichte, Morphologie und Porengröße) wurden untersucht. So wurden Aerogele mit einer Dichte von 0.05-1.20 g/cm3, Porositäten zwischen 92 und 97% und Porengrößen zwischen 1.1 und 4.5 μm erhalten. Zusätzlich wurden im Rasterelektronenmikroskop offene große und makroporöse, miteinander verbundene Cellulose-Netzwerke beobachtet. [...]

Full textSurface functionalization allows molecular receptors to be immobilized on surfaces and to form inclusion complexes by supramolecular chemistry, which is needed for various applications. The purpose of the present work was the study of association process between a guest molecule, a azobenzene derivative, and different host molecules when these hosts are grafted onto a gold surface. These studies were performed using numerical simulation and more precisely molecular dynamics. In homogeneous medium, these simulations allowed a structural characterization at the microscopic level of these systems. By coupling the simulations to PMF calculations, the thermodynamic properties of homogeneous phase association were calculated and compared to the experimental one. The immobilization of the host on a surface brings a modification of the host structure. This modification was studied according to the length of the grafting chains and also the number of anchoring points. For the association in heterogeneous phase, the thermodynamic properties were also obtained using PMF.They were interpreted using a structural and energetic characterization of the processes involved. The comparison of structural and thermodynamic results obtained in a homogeneous and heterogeneous phase revealed a significant impact of grafting on the association processes

Full textThe study presented in this thesis concerns the evolution of a shock wave in a non-idealized environnment. The evolution of a free-field shock wave can be described by various empirical results found in the literature or by theoretical formulations. However, as soon as it is a question of approving the results of a simulation code describing the evolution of a shock wave in a complex environnment, knowledge about the development of waves in a free-field is no longer sufficient. Therefore, new experimental data must be acquired to validate the different simulation tools in-house. The results of this thesis are part of this project. Small-scale tests have been sized to fit a scenario with an explosive nature different from that used in the laboratory. The source used is gaseous and made of propane oxygen at a stoichiometric proportion. To measure the different characteristics of a shock wave and to acquire new results, two measurement systems were used. Pressure sensors have been installed on the ground, coupled with a visualization system with a high speed camera whose is close to shadowscopy. Several configurations allowed to have solid basis on the characteristics defining the incident and reflected shock waves in free field. The study focuses on Mach's reflection moreover on Mach stem. Subsequently isolated obstacles were installed on the path of an incident wave or Mach’s reflection to represent surface effects. The results showed a change in the characteristics and morphology of the waves downstream of the obstacles

Full textWith the Curtin-Hammett principle for the first time isoindoles which are mainly exist in the isoindoline tautomeric form were introduced into the reaction with cyclic dienophiles and the products of these reactions were obtained. We synthesized a series of surfactantson the basis of isoindoles with long alkyl chains and studied their physico-chemical properties of aggregation in water and formamide. The reactivity of 1-aminoisoindole was compared in homogeneous and structured media. It has been shown that structured environment can act as a catalyst in the interaction with maleimides. In the case where the concentration of amphiphilic derivatives of aminoisoindole is lower than the critical aggregation concentration (homogeneous medium), the reaction with maleimide does not happen. We proposed two new methods of the synthesis of fluorescent derivatives of 4-aminobenzo[f]isoindole which have some advantages over described in the literature including the velocity of the reaction, simple way of obtaining products with high purity and better yields

Full textThis thesis is dedicated to the study of propagation properties of various reaction–diffusion systems coming from population dynamics. In the first part, we study the strong competition limit of competition–diffusion systems with two species. Thanks to the spatial segregation, we determine the sign of the speed of the bistable traveling wave. The generalization to bistable pulsating fronts in spatially periodic media is then considered in order to study the role of spatial heterogeneity. We find a condition sufficient for the existence of such fronts as well as a condition sufficient for the existence of stable steady states which might on the contrary block the propagation. Then we show that whenever a family of strongly competing pulsating fronts exists, we can establish a result very similar to the one obtained in homogeneous media. In the second part, systems of KPP type with any number of species are considered. We study the existence of steady states and traveling waves, the qualitative properties of these solutions as well as the asymptotic speed of spreading of certain solutions of the Cauchy problem. This settles several open questions on the prototypical KPP systems that are mutation–competition–diffusion systems. In the third part, we go back to competition–diffusion systems with two species. Considering this time the monostable case, we study the asymptotic speeds of spreading of certain solutions of the Cauchy problem. By so doing, we show the existence of propagating terraces describing the invasion of an uninhabited territory by a weak but fast competitor followed by the invasion by a strong but slow competitor

Full textThe aim of the researches carried out during this thesis was to better understand the chemical mechanisms of the complexation of trivalent f-elements by Adptz, a tridentate N-donor ligand, in homogeneous conditions. A thermodynamic approach was retained in order to estimate, from an energetical point of view, the influence of the different contributions to the reaction, and to acquire a complete set of thermodynamic data on this reaction. First, the influence of the nature of the cation on the thermodynamics was considered. The thermodynamic parameters (free energy, enthalpy and entropy) of the 1/1 complexes were systematically determined by van't Hoff method and/or microcalorimetry in a mixed solvent methanol/water (in volumic proportions 75/25%) for every lanthanide(III) ion, yttrium(III) and for three actinide(III) cations: plutonium, americium and curium. The comparison of the values obtained between the two series of f-element highlights the increase of stability of the complexes by a factor of 20 in favour of the actinide cations. This gap is explained by a more exothermic reaction and is associated, in the data interpretation, to a higher covalency of the actinide(III)-nitrogen bond. Then, the influence of the change of solvent composition on the thermodynamic of complexation was studied for the reaction between europium(III) and Adptz. The stability of the complex formed increases with the percentage of methanol in the mixed solvent, owing to an increase of the entropic contribution. The solvent reorganization upon complexation seems to be the prominent process from the energetical point of view

But nowadays, it is not largely applied at industrial scale because of the lack of mastering of the separation between the soluble organo-metallic catalyst and the reaction products. The aim of this study is to explore how the integration of organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), can allow to answer this question. Several approaches can be a unit operation in cascade with a synthesis reactor. Secondly OSN can be coupled with the reactor in a single operation to obtain a membrane reactor, that can be used either in a discontinuous or a continuous mode. In this study, several homogeneous catalysts of Hoveyda II type are used in a model reaction of ring closing metathesis

Full textThe goal of this study is the surface modification of silica nanoparticles in aqueous media by grafting alkylphosphonic acid molecules. As Si-O-P bonds are unstable toward hydrolysis, the grafting is done by aluminium species deposited on the nanoparticles surface that is to say by Si-O-Al-O-P bonds. First, a study of the grafting of alkylphosphonic acid molecules onto alumina nanoparticles surface, used as a model, has been carried out. Then two strategies have been followed to modify silica nanoparticles surface: (a) the grafting of alkylphosphonic acid molecules on the surface of nanoparticles industrially modified by aluminium surface species and (b) the surface modification of silica nanoparticles by successive additions of aluminium salt then alkylphosphonic acid. The different nanoparticles functionalised by alkyl chains obtained have been characterised by thermogravimetric analysis, NMR MAS 31P, elementary analysis, infra-red spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption at 77 K, hexane and water adsorptions at 25 °C and by a floating test in methanol/water mixing (“methanol number”). Grafting parameters have been optimised which allow us to synthesize nanoparticles with different covering rates and thus to control their hydrophobicity and their surface polarity on a large scale

Thus, one effective way to reduce heating/cooling cost is by providing a good control system that limits power needed to run these tasks. For this purpose, we will study the control of a finite homogeneous diffusive interface using the three generations CRONE controller and control their behaviors. The novelty of this work exists in the use of a fractional order controller (the CRONE controller) applied to a fractional order plant and the use of a complex controller (the third generation) which is not so familiar in the controllers domain. The results show the behavior and the robustness of the three generations CRONE controllers

Full textThe oxidation, autoignition and combustion of hydrocarbons were studied at high pressure (0,34 - 2,32 MPa) and low temperature (600 - 950 K) for lean and ultra-lean gas mixtures. Three hydrocarbons typical of the chemical structure of diesel fuel components were chosen: n-butylbenzene for the aromatics, n-propylcyclohexane for the naphtenes and n-decane for the paraffins. An exhaustive base of experimental and theoretical thermokinetic data has been built. Autoignition experiments were conducted in an original rapid compression machine fitted with efficient analytical attachments. Global and detailed data of reactivities were collected: autoignition delay times and phenomenology of the autoignitions, speciation and determination of oxidation intermediates. They allowed recognizing and interpreting the main reaction pathways leading to the low-temperature autoignition and pollutant formation. Complex reaction schemes and thermokinetic models were developed and validated with the new experimental data. Numerical simulations were done to predict the effect of the exhaust gas and compression phase. This work has been a part of a project of four theses to elaborate efficient tools to optimise the clean and attractive HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) mode of combustion, which requires a deep understanding of the conditions of low-temperature autoignition

Full textThe work of this thesis concerns the study of the thermal diffusion phenomena to have a model (white box approach) for the analysis, the frequency synthesis and the time validation of robust commands. The Part 1 composed of chapter 1 focuses on the definitions and the interpretations of the integro-differential non-integer operator. The simulation problem in the time domain of the fractional differential systems is specified. Part 2 entitled "Analytical Study" includes two chapters whose objective is to make a detailed analysis of the fractional order behavior, first in a semi-infinite medium (chapter 2), then in a finite medium (chapter 3). Part 3, entitled "Numerical simulation of time responses" combining two chapters (4 and 5), aims the implementation of the "thermal process" plant (model validation of a finite medium) of a simulator of the thermal control loop time responses
