The article considers the problem of optimizing the topology of products in additive manufacturing due to the optimal placement of circular holes. The task is to pack several circles of variable radii, set within the limits set by 3D printing standards. A two-criteria formulation is proposed, which takes into account the packing factor and the maximum mechanical stress of the products. The method of the main criterion is used to find a compromise solution to the problem. A new approach has been developed, which is based on the modified method of Apollonian packing of circles and nonlinear opti

Abstract Membrane technology is a separation technology commonly used in water or wastewater treatment. Polyethersulfone (PES) is a polymer material commonly used in membrane manufacturing, but PES is hydrophobic, making it susceptible to fouling. Fouling can reduce membrane performance. Therefore, modifications in membrane manufacturing are needed, namely by adding hybrid silica/chitosan additives to the membrane matrix. This study aims to improve the hydrophilicity and performance of PES membranes by adding hybrid silica/chitosan additives using the Non-Solvent Induced Phase Separation (NIPS

Abstract Conventional 0.2C-13Cr martensitic steel has a higher SSC susceptibility in NACE TM-01-77 solution (0.5% acetic acid + 5% NaCl, 25°C(75°F), saturated with 0.1MPa (15psi) H2S) and in the modified NACE solution (0.5% acetic acid + 5% NaCl, 25°C(75°F), 0.01MPa (1.5psi) H2S) than low alloy steel. This is due to a higher hydrogen content (C0) in 13Cr steel although the threshold hydrogen content (Cth) for SSC is almost the same as that of low alloy steel with same strength. The reason why 13Cr steel has a higher C0 is because it has a smaller apparent diffusion coefficient (D) of hydrogen

Initial iterations suggest improvement in mixedness of the ceramic composite is desirable to create a more homogenous blended microstructure. The initial design utilized a basic auger shape designed to move the slurry along, but it did not effectively mix the two slurries while printing. Abstract In this study, the additive manufacturing technique has been utilized to fabricate air-water heat exchangers for the application of thermoelectric power plants. Additive manufacturing is a powerful fabrication method that has enabled fabrication of complex geometries that are either challenging or impossible to fabricate based on conventional techniques. Three manifold-microchannel heat exchangers with different interior designs were fabricated by additive manufacturing and from stainless steel. Abstract The primary goal of wellbore cementing is providing a zonal isolation. Prevention of any potential leaks, beyond even production life, needs novel methods to engineer cement properties at the material-level. We probe the application of a cost-effective anthracite additive, to refine voids and control crack propagation in cement. We develop a micro reinforcement for the cement to improve its overall mechanical properties, specifically, its tensile strength and resiliency. We present a method for treating the surface of anthracite particle. Surface-modified anthracite particles can disp

To increase the content of immobilized zinc, collagen was subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis by pepsin, the degree of hydrolysis was 65.15% in 3 hours. Hydrolysis significantly increased the ability of collagen to bind zinc ions. The results demonstrate the prospects of using collagen from secondary raw materials as an effective carrie

This project models dendrite growth during nonequilibrium solidification of binary alloys using the phase-field method (PFM). Understanding the dendrite formation processes is important because the microstructural features directly influence mechanical properties of the produced parts. An improved understanding of dendrite formation may inform design protocols to achieve optimized process parameters for controlled microstructures and enhanced properties of materials. To this end, this work implements a phase-field model to simulate directional solidification of binary alloys. For applications

Transportation has an enormous impact on the U.S. economy and on the lives of all Americans. Many modes of transportation rely on pavement, but pavement conditions deteriorate over time because of the combined effects of traffic and climate. Exposure to moisture often causes premature failure of asphalt pavements as it reduces the stiffness of the asphalt and enables stripping of the asphalt from the aggregate. This research evaluates the effectiveness of clay nanomaterials (i.e., nanoclays) in improving the resistance of hot mix asphalt (HMA) to moisture damage and compares the enhancement re

The shift in demand of using PG 58-28 over PG 64-22 has resulted in potential alternative methods to produce softer binders more economically using proprietary products. However, there are challenges in using these proprietary products for asphalt modification because of uncertainty in their long-term performance and significant variability in binder chemistry.
