Abstract:
Let's try to imagine a world where scientific illiteracy is the exception rather than the rule. A world, that is, where the vast majority of people are informed and aware of the major scientific debates in progress, and capable of reflecting on them in an independent and critical manner. A world in which each person would have the resources at their disposal to elaborate a considered opinion on the techniques of cloning, genetically modified organisms, the new anti-cancer therapies or even about the origins of life on Earth or the final destination of the universe. If this world were possible,

This chapter explores ongoing debates surrounding the environmental safety of genetically modified (GM) crops. Systematic review and meta-analysis provide convincing evidence that Bt crops are safer than insecticides for non-target invertebrate species, such as honeybees and ladybird beetles. In addition, widespread adoption of Bt crops has resulted in reduced use of insecticides and other benefits for the environment. Despite such evidence, there remains a substantial opinion gap between the general public and scientists regarding the safety of GM crops. While systematic review and meta-analy

Abstract:
Over the course of childhood a patient’s decision-making capacity evolves. While eighteen is the age of majority in most states, younger patients may well have the ability to process information and make informed decisions. At the same time, the “dual process theory” of maturation reveals that emotional considerations may outweigh cognitive ones. Physicians must understand how to respond to parental requests for nondisclosure of diagnosis and prognosis, as well as differences of opinion between the patient and parents as to appropriate treatment options. Even when a child agrees with her paren

Against the background of policy debates by advocates and opponents like nongovernmental organizations about regulation of biotechnology, this chapter summarizes communication by mass media about biotechnology and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the public sphere. On the one hand there are several Eurobarometer surveys dealing with knowledge, perceptions, and opinions for or against biotechnology in the different European countries, and on the other hand, several analyses of media content have been realized, focusing on key events like the sheep Dolly and issues, cycles, or media fram

The public is more interested in agricultural and food issues than ever before, as is evident in the many agricultural controversies debated in the media. Why is it that some people embrace new agricultural technologies while others steadfastly defend traditional farming methods? Why do some prefer to buy food grown around the world while others patronize small, local farmers? In the debates about organic food, genetically modified organisms, and farm animal welfare, it is not always clear what the scientific literature actually says. To understand these controversies, the authors encourage re

Attitudes to GM crops continue to generate tension, even though they have been grown commercially for over 20 years. Negative sentiment towards their development limits their adoption in Western countries, despite there being no evidence of harm to human health. These unfounded concerns about genetically modified crops have also inhibited uptake in many countries throughout Africa and Asia, having a major impact on agricultural productivity and preventing the widespread cultivation of potentially life-saving crops.

A few lawsuits have changed the entire shape of the computer industry as nearly every aspect of computers has come under litigation. These courtroom battles have confused not only computer and legal amateurs, but lawyers, juries, and judges too. The result has been illogical legal opinions, reversals on appeal, and an environment in which the outcome of key legal battles is not only unpredictable but could change the industry's direction yet again. Graham surveys the past and shows how it points to the future. He illustrates how the absence of statutes specifically protecting software has freq

What Happened to governance in Kashmir? studies the state of Jammu and Kashmir from the perspective of an ‘exceptional state’ rather than a ‘normal state’, a periphery on the margins of the centre, and thus shifts the focus from the central grid to the local arena. It contains a mass of information on what successive governments did to manage the conflicted state of Jammu and Kashmir. It identifies the various issues and problems the state has been confronted with since the transfer of power to ‘popular’ government in 1948 to 1989. The book makes a critical study of the engagement of Indian st
