Let's try to imagine a world where scientific illiteracy is the exception rather than the rule. A world, that is, where the vast majority of people are informed and aware of the major scientific debates in progress, and capable of reflecting on them in an independent and critical manner. A world in which each person would have the resources at their disposal to elaborate a considered opinion on the techniques of cloning, genetically modified organisms, the new anti-cancer therapies or even about the origins of life on Earth or the final destination of the universe. If this world were possible,

Chapter 57 concerns no-oral-modification (n.o.m.) clauses. Often a written contract includes a provision that the contract cannot be modified except by a writing. The general rule at common law was that an oral modification of a written contract that includes an n.o.m. clause was enforceable not withstanding the clause. UCC Section 2-209(2) now provides that if a contract for the sale of goods includes an n.o.m. clause modifications must be in writing. The force of Section 2-209(2) is moderated by Section 2-209(4), which provides that although an attempt at modification does not satisfy Sectio

This chapter describes Inca political and economic organization and the infrastructure established to support imperial administration. Inca conceptualizations of politics and economics differed from those of the West, and the organization of power in the imperial capital relied heavily on the ruler’s person. Provincial areas were conceived as four distinct regions bound to the ruler by a hierarchy of Inca governors, record-keepers, and local officials. Inca rule modified local labor practices to increase economic production, using resettlement and special labor statuses to ensure the productio

This chapter considers changes in Columbanian monastic practices that arose with growth and expansion. Agrestius, a renegade monk, accused the deceased Columbanus and his practices of being heretical, provoking the Synod of Mâcon in 626/627. While Agrestius’s attempt failed, the synod led to a modification in Columbanian practices. The severity of Columbanus’s legislation was modified by incorporating the Regula Benedicti with Columbanian practices. Through this “mixed rule,” the Regula Benedicti—the foundational text for Western monasticism—was disseminated throughout Merovingian Gaul. These

The Laws is Plato’s second attempt to outline an ideal society. It does not, as often thought, introduce the rule of law as a rejection of the rule of virtue in the Republic. In the Laws the place of law in the development of virtue is rethought, and Plato tempers the importance of obedience to law with the need for citizens to understand their laws as structuring a virtuous way of life in which they actively participate. Plato now develops a fresh methodology for political thought, one which learns from the past, and recognizes the value in a good society of citizen participation, and of a nu

Abstract This volume aims to reappraise the wide-ranging and lasting transformation of the Roman monarchy between the Principate and Late Antiquity. The book takes as its focus the period from Diocletian to Theodosius I (284-395) and thus on a major developmental phase in the history of the Roman Empire. During this period, the stability of monarchical rule depended heavily on the emperor's mobility, on collegial or dynastic rule, and on the military resolution of internal political crises. At the same time, profound religious changes modified the premises of political interaction and symbolic

Multiparticle thermodynamic Green’s functions, defined in terms of grand canonical ensemble averages of time-ordered products of creation and annihilation operators, are interpreted as tracing the amplitude for time-developing correlated interacting particle motions taking place in the background of a thermal ensemble. Under equilibrium conditions, time-translational invariance permits the one-particle thermal Green’s function to be represented in terms of a single frequency, leading to a Lehmann spectral representation whose frequency poles describe the energy spectrum. Abstract Arbitration is the dispute resolution method of choice in international commerce, but it rests on a complex legal foundation. In many international commercial contracts, the parties will choose the law governing any future disputes. However, where the parties do not choose a governing law, the prevailing approach in arbitration is to afford arbitrators broad and largely unfettered discretion to choose the law considered most appropriate or most applicable. The uncertainty resulting from this discretion potentially affects the parties’ rights and obligations, the performance of their c
