We consider the Compton amplitude for the scattering of a photon and an (massless) "electron/positron" at one loop (i.e. genus 1) in a four-dimensional fermionic heterotic string model. Starting from the bosonization of the world sheet fermions needed to explicitly construct the spin fields representing the space–time fermions, we present all the steps of the computation which leads to the explicit form of the amplitude as an integral of modular forms over the moduli space.

AbstractThe viscoelasticity of reduced-fat Cheddar and Mozzarella cheeses was characterized in small (parallel disk rheometer, go = 0.01) and large (sliding plate rheometer, 0.2< go <7) amplitude oscillatory shear at 40 and 60˚C. We deduced the linear relaxation spectrum from the small strain measurements. At large strain amplitudes, we found sinusoidal stress responses whose amplitudes are well below those predicted from the linear relaxation spectrum, and yet remarkably linear with strain amplitude. We call this the large strain linear regime. We discovered that the Lodge rubberlike li

We propose an off-shell extension of the closed bosonic string scattering amplitudes as functional integrals over bordered Riemann surfaces. The tree level off-shell N-scalars amplitude is handled with the help of Schottky groups and the Burnside θ-series. Using these tools and the asymptotic behaviour of the partition function at the boundary of the moduli space, we show that the off-shell amplitudes exhibit the tachyon mass-shell poles in the external momenta. In addition, their residues are shown to be the semi-off-shell amplitudes and the well-known Koba-Nielsen amplitudes.

In the framework of the Chern-Simons gravity proposed by Witten, a transition amplitude of a torus universe in (2+1)-dimensional quantum gravity is computed. This amplitude has the desired properties as a probability amplitude of the quantum mechanics of a torus universe, namely, it has a peak on the “classical orbit” and it satisfies the Schrödinger equation of the (2+1)-dimensional gravity. The discussion is given that the classical orbit dominance of the amplitude is not altered by taking the modular invariance into account and that this amplitude can serve as a covariant transition amplitu

Phase oscillators are a common starting point for the reduced description of many single neuron models that exhibit a strongly attracting limit cycle. The framework for analysing such models in response to weak perturbations is now particularly well advanced, and has allowed for the development of a theory of weakly connected neural networks. However, the strong-attraction assumption may well not be the natural one for many neural oscillator models. For example, the popular conductance based Morris-Lecar model is known to respond to periodic pulsatile stimulation in a chaotic fashion that cann

The application of high-order numerical modeling to nonlinear ultrasonic wave propagation in fluids is discussed. This work is motivated by ongoing developments with Wave Phase Conjugating (WPC) transducers, which are able to greatly amplify and re-emit incident acoustic energy back to a source location. As a result of the high amplification factors, conjugate wave magnitudes may exceed linear acoustic thresholds, leading to progressive nonlinear distortion and shock wave formation. The bootstrap current is a toroidal plasma current that arises spontaneously as a result of the confinement of the plasma. It is shown that the effect of introducing this current is to split the ELM widths associated with this model into two classes; one group with large ELM widths, the other with small ELM widths. The most straightforward way to assess the thermoacoustic stability of a combustion system is based on modal approaches. The modes are typically computed from linearized equations in the frequency domain, such as the Helmholtz equation. Due to the linear character, nonlinear saturation effects cannot be computed with such models. Flame describing functions have been suggested to fill this gap. They describe the flame response in an amplitude-dependent manner and have been successfully used in recent work for the prediction of limit-cycle amplitudes in single-burner systems and annular combusto
