Advantages of optics over electronics in signal processing derive from the fact that many operations, such as addition, multiplication, correlation, and filtering, can be performed in parallel on two-dimensional data samples. Although acousto-optic devices have been used to provide impressive throughput, they are inherently one-dimensional and do not possess any information-storage capability beyond the acoustic transit time (≤50 μs). Abstract:
Fiber-optic networks are continually evolving to accommodate the ever increasing data rates demanded by modern applications and devices. The current state-of-the art systems are being deployed with 100 Gb/s rates per wavelength while maintaining the 50 GHz channel spacing established for 10 Gb/s dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) systems. Phase modulation formats (in particular quadrature phase shift keying - QPSK) are necessary to meet the spectral efficiency (SE) requirements of the application. The main challenge for phase modulated optical systems is fiber nonlinearities, where c

Abstract:
Electro-Absorption Modulators (EAMs) have been instrumental in achieving ultrafast modulation speeds of over 100 Gb/s, and in particular, segmented Travelling-Wave (TWEAMs) designs offer excellent compatibility with standardmicrowave technology due to their characteristic impedance being closer to 50. The TWEAM device fabricated as part of the European Project HECTO, has been succesful is field trials at 112 Gb/s using On-Off Keying (OOK). Achieving phase modulation using a TWEAM offers not only significant improvements over OOK in terms of higher bit rate, but also a great advantage against o

Phase modulation formats are believed to be one of the key enabling techniques for next generation high speed long haul fiber-optic communication systems due to the following main advantages: (1) with a balanced detection, a better receiver sensitivity over conventional intensity modulation formats, e.g., a ~3 dB sensitivity improvement using differential phase shift keying (DPSK) and a ~1.3 dB sensitivity improvement using differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK); (2) excellent robustness against fiber nonlinearities; (3) high spectrum efficiency when using multilevel phase modulati
