Abstract:
A sentence is the highest unit of grammar. Thus, constructing error-free sentences in writing is one of the biggest challenges encounted by most non-native speakers, and even university students are not an exception to this reality. This study aims at investigating various types of sentences produced by tertiary-level maritime students in a Sri Lankan university. The study was based on a narrative writing activity in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) module. The students were provided forty-five minutes to produce the piece of writing as an in-class activity on a topic relevant to their field visit to a port. This is a descriptive study based on the analysis of a small corpus of essays written by twenty maritime students, and a structural analysis of sentences was employed to examine the students’ writing. Different kinds of sentences and sentence errors were identified, and they were classified accordingly. The findings of the study revealed that the students favoured simple sentences over other sentence types. Approximately two-thirds of the sentences produced belonged to the simple sentence category. The compound-complex form was found to be the least utilized sentence type among the target group. The analysis of sentences was based on the elements of the clause structure explained in Quirk et al. (1985) and Oshima and Hough (2006). Interestingly, it was observed that there was no single common clause structural pattern used by the participants. Instead, they used subject-verb-object (SVO), subject-verb-complement (SVC) and subject-verb-adverbial (SVA) types very often when writing. Similarly, fragments and run-on sentences were recorded high among maritime learners’ erroneous sentences in writing. The study findings have pedagogical implications for the teaching of English language grammar that subsumes essay writing in the EAP module.

Abstract:
The Indonesian language learning module for high school X-grade students, created by Indri Anatya Permatasari, M.Pd, contains several writing errors. These errors include inconsistencies in punctuation marks, diction, conjunctions, and inappropriate meaning, which do not align with the norms of good and correct language usage. Effective sentence structure is crucial for conveying information clearly to readers. The discovery of these errors in the observation report text within the module prompted further research. The research aims to identify and address these writing errors to improve the module and enhance students' comprehension of the text. By analyzing these errors, the learning module can be tailored to better meet the needs of the students. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, with the observation report text within the Indonesian language learning module as the primary data source. The method involves thorough reading of the text, error identification, analysis, categorization, and correction. The observation report text contains facts gathered from observation activities. The research revealed four writing errors: inconsistencies in the use of punctuation marks, diction, conjunctions, and inappropriate meaning. These errors are attributed to the author's limited knowledge and skills in report writing.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a unified computational framework, which ensures the output quality of large language models in writing education through three major modules: style transformation, dependency detection, and adversarial intervention. The style conversion module adopts the Transformer model with a dual-encoder architecture to transcribe students' texts into academic or news styles while retaining the original meaning. The dependency detection module reconstructs sentence-level grammatical relations and text-level argumentation structures based on the two-layer graph attention network (GAT). The adversarial intervention module simulates typical student errors through controlled perturbations such as synonym replacement and clause recombination to evaluate the robustness of the model. Experiments show that the academic accuracy rate of the style conversion module reaches 91.8%, the news accuracy rate reaches 89.5%, and the average score of UEBL is 28.6. In the case of adversarial perturbation, the style accuracy rate decreased by only 3.2 percentage points. The syntactic annotation accuracy (LAS) of the GAT parser on the original data was 87.5%, the text F1 value reached 78.3%, and the losses under adversarial interference were controlled at 4.8% (LAS) and 5.3% (F1) respectively. These findings confirm that adversarial training can significantly increase the model's resistance to writing errors. This framework provides educators with practical tools to ensure writing style standardization, structural consistency, and the ability to resist error feedback, laying the foundation for building a reliable AI-assisted writing teaching system.

Abstract:
The task of music-to-lyric generation aims to create lyrics that can be sung in harmony with the music while capturing the music’s intrinsic meaning. Previous efforts in this area have struggled to effectively handle both the structural and semantic alignments of music and lyrics, often relying on rigid, manually crafted rules or overlooking the semantic essence of music, which deviates from the natural lyric-writing process of humans. In this paper, we bridge the structural and semantic gap between music and lyrics by proposing an end-to-end model for music-driven lyric generation. Our model aims at generating well-formatted lyrics based solely on the music while capturing its inherent semantic essence. In the music processing phase, we introduce a hierarchical music information extractor, which operates at both the song and sentence levels. The song-level extractor focuses on discerning the overall semantic content of the music, such as themes and emotions. Simultaneously, the sentence-level extractor captures the local semantic and structural details from note sequences. Additionally, we propose a lyric length predictor that determines the optimal length for the generated lyrics. During the lyric generation phase, the information gathered by the above modules is integrated, providing essential guidance for the downstream lyric generation module to produce coherent and meaningful lyrics. Experimental results on objective and subjective benchmarks demonstrate the capabilities of our proposed model in capturing semantics and generating well-formatted lyrics.

Abstract:
Language has an important contribution in communicating with others. If there is no language for communication, it is impossible to run smoothly. The use of language cannot be separated from mistakes in both speech and writing. Language errors are forms of errors in the use of speech forms of various linguistic units in the form of words, sentences, and paragraphs. The standard language rule system is a form of Indonesian language rule that is used as a reference standard. The purpose of this investigation is to be able to describe the forms of language errors, the factors that trigger language errors, and efforts to resolve these errors. In the editorial text in the teaching module there are still language errors at the syntactic level, therefore it is interesting for the author to investigate errors at the syntactic level. In this research, we used two methods of data collection and data analysis. The data analysis method used was documentary. Apart from that, the descriptive method was used for analyzing data. From the data, it was found that there was an error in the language at the syntactic level in the editorial for the Indonesian language teaching module for class XII SMA Merdeka curriculum. Based on the data investigation conducted, there were 4 language errors found, among others, standard word errors, conjunction errors, punctuation errors, and effective sentence errors. The benefits obtained after conducting an analysis of language errors in editorial texts are improving sentence structure according to linguistic rules

Bulletin of Electrical Engineering and Informatics 12, no. 2 (2023): 1196~1202. https://doi.org/10.11591/eei.v12i1.3914.

Abstract:
Sentiment analysis in the Arabic language is challenging because of its linguistic complexity. Arabic is complex in words, paragraphs, and sentence structure. Moreover, most Arabic documents contain multiple dialects, writing alphabets, and styles (e.g., Franco-Arab). Nevertheless, fine-tuned bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) models can provide a reasonable prediction accuracy for Arabic sentiment classification tasks. This paper presents a fine-tuning approach for BERT models for classifying Arabic sentiments. It uses Arabic BERT pre-trained models and tokenizers and includes three stages. The first stage is text preprocessing and data cleaning. The second stage uses transfer-learning of the pre-trained models’ weights and trains all encoder layers. The third stage uses a fully connected layer and a drop-out layer for classification. We tested our finetuned models on five different datasets that contain reviews in Arabic with different dialects and compared the results to 11 state-of-the-art models. The experiment results show that our models provide better prediction accuracy than our competitors. We show that the choice of the pre-trained BERT model and the tokenizer type improves the accuracy of Arabic sentiment classification.

Abstract:
We express our views and thoughts with the help of words in both speaking and writing. We use small phrases and sentence for communication and expression. In English grammar sentence structure is the arrangement of words, phrases and clauses in a sentence. The grammatical function and meaning depends on this structural organization. The most common order in English sentence is subject-verb-object. Teaching of English at primary level is not only to teach a lesson and write a list of vocabulary. The main objectives of teaching English is to develop the four skills of a students which is Reading, Writing, listening and speaking. To know better about these four skills, we must have to learn its principles of sentence structure and grammar rules as well. The old English curriculum was only focused on reading skill of a student. Mostly students are not aware of sentence structure. Sentence structure is not only the collection of words and sounds. Sentence structure the central aspect of each sentence. Pakistani students do many mistakes in writing and speaking of English language. In this study we will teach sentence structure through activity-based learning small group teaching strategy. The study was experimental in nature and from true experimental design pretest posttest comparative group design was adopted. Through the results of pretest two randomly equal groups were framed and treatment was given to the experimental group. At the end of the treatment, posttest was taken from both groups to measure the effect of traditional and small groups teaching strategy on students learning sentence structure.

Abstract:
Students often make mistakes in writing descriptive texts about people, animals, objects, or procedures. When asked about the source of the error, they did not give a clear answer to the question, let alone an explanation of the source of the error. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of errors made by students and find out why students made mistakes in writing texts. The method used in this study is a qualitative description. Fifteen seventh-grade junior high school students were the subjects in this study. Data collection was carried out by presenting tests to students to write three descriptive texts about people, animals, and procedures, and focus group interviews on finding out why students made mistakes. The data is based on seven indicators in writing, namely the title, main sentence, significant sentence development, sentence structure, grammar used, word use, and writing, and ten sources of errors that might cause students to make mistakes in writing. This study found that students made mistakes in describing people, animals, and procedures in the title, main sentence, significant sentence development, sentence structure, word choice, grammar, and mechanics. Meanwhile, the highest proportion of students' mistakes in writing is the students' indifference to their writing.

Abstract:
This paper is aimed to investigate the syntactic structure of deaf students of Brawijaya Universirty. Syntactic structure which focuses on this discussion is the ability to recognize the sentence structure produced by deaf students. This study basically focuses on the language produced by deaf students of Brawijaya University in form of narrative writing. The narrative writing is written in Indonesian language. I chose Indonesian language as the language recourse, because the primary language of deaf students is Indonesian. This study uses descriptive qualitative research because this research basically aimed at describing the data in the form written text. The participant of this research is five deaf students who are classified into mild and moderate hearing loss. In term of analyzing the data, we concern on the three aspects of sentence structure. Those are: types of sentence, the presence of Subject and Verb in a sentence and the presence of Object for transitive verb. The finding indicates that the deaf students of Brawijaya University are able to write both simple sentences and compound sentence. They are also capable to write transitive verb which is followed by the object well. Yet, they are less in writing the passive voice form. Moreover, the data shows that different time durations of writing create a different number of words produced by them. Different deaf classification can provide different significance to a number of sentences produced by them.

Abstract:
Simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences are sentence patterns which each sentence has different pattern, and it is strongly related to grammatical structure, punctuation marks, and connectors. Due to the complexity, EFL learners often get difficulties in understanding and writing the four sentence patterns. Therefore, the objectives of the research are to classify each type of errors and find out the most and least frequently errors of sentence patterns made by students then identify the occurrence frequency of the errors. This is a descriptive qualitative employed by 30 students from the third semester taking Basic Writing, academic year 2017-2018, at Indraprasta PGRI University. This research concerns on surface strategy taxonomy that analyzes four errors. The results show the errors from the highest to the lowest percentage: misformation (57.6%), omission (27.47%), addition (8.8%), and misordering (6.13%). Dealing with sentence patterns, compound-complex sentence becomes the most difficult sentence pattern writing because the most frequently errors made by students are 44.54%. The second is compound sentence with errors 23.2%. Then followed by complex sentence with the number of errors is 22.13%. The least frequently errors of sentence patterns made by students are simple sentence with errors 10.13%. The occurrence of mistake is from the pattern of compound-complex sentence that is the most complicated of three other sentence patterns. The conclusion is regularization in misformation is the most frequently error made by students which cause is from poor understanding of grammatical structure.

Abstract:
Low level of literacy of students, postgraduate students and university staff results in infelicities of style in Russian scientific papers and abstracts that might lead to manuscript rejection for publication in international journals. The author addresses the task of readability improvement of abstracts and scientific papers written by university staff members from technical and natural sciences departments. Sentence and text readability is determined not only by the number of words, i.e. the length of a sentence but also by the sentence structure and its grammar and lexical structure. The infelicities of style are caused by differences in scientific discourse between Russian and English languages. In particular, these might be nominalization, complex sentence structure, and wide use of Passive Voice in Russian sentences. Bilingual education is considered as the process of trainees’ introduction to the English-speaking world culture based upon matching Russian and English stylistic features. As the result the trainees realize the necessity of pre-translation adaptation of their texts. The author suggests some ways of pre-translation preparation of a sentence: shortening the sentence length up to 10-20 words by eliminating non-informative words and splitting a complex sentence into two or three according to the rule: one idea = one sentence. Some examples illustrate how chains of nouns in the genitive case could be substituted with other structures. Special attention is paid to parallel structures usage and eliminating non-informative words. In this way Russian authors will be able to write concise and clear texts in Russian and English in accordance with the accepted international language conventions.

Abstract:
This research aimed to find out the types of sentence structure errors in English paragraphs written by tertiary English students and the factors causing the errors. This research employed an explanatory mixed-method design. Fourth-semester students from the English department of IAIN Curup were engaged as the subjects of this research. Positivism-governed document analyses and constructivism-based interviews were conducted to solicit the data as desired. The quantitative findings garnered from document analyses endorsing a ready-to-use construct proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982), revealed that there were four types of sentence structure errors students made, namely omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Those types of errors were exhibited in a proximate composition which meant that the students had compatible difficulties in terms of the four types of errors. As uncovered from students' writing works, the four types of errors were found in the domains of words, phrases, and clauses. Subsequently, the qualitative findings, elicited from interviews, demonstrated that the factors of sentence structure errors extended to students' mother tongue interference, overgeneralization in the use of English rules and norms, and the lecturer's teaching material delivery and method. Anchored in the data gained, this research discussed the data from the perspective of interlanguage theory, wherein some reviews of SLA and EFL pedagogy-related theories were offered to help lower the factors causing English sentence structure errors in writing skills. Affixes such as suffixes, infixes, prefixes, ablaut and reduplication are kinds of derivational morphology, meanwhile plural, possessive, past time, progressive, comparative, and superlative are kinds of inflectional morphology. Syntactically, the errors occur becuse of not being aware how to build a phrase or a sentence in English. They write more than one verb in a phrase or a sentence which does not need but one. As well they are not sure about word order in English and how to build a simple sentence. They like to miss subject or object pronoun in their sentence. We can explain that by saying that all these forms do not exist in Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language), resulting in the tendency for the students to omit or add these forms in their writing. Too many clauses in one sentence often occur in their sentece.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectives: Agraphia is the loss or impairment of the ability to produce written language as a consequence of brain damage and is a well recognised feature of dementia. However there is no generally accepted classification of agraphic disorders. Our aim was to determine the influence of writing style, lettercase and sentence polarity of the writing component of Folstein's MMSE on the overall test score. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the ‘write a sentence’ request of Folstein's MMSE of 280 randomly selected patients attending a geriatric day hospital. We analysed four sentence characteristics: 1 Number of words, 2 Writing legibility, 3 Sentence polarity, 4 Letter case. Results: 280 MMSE forms were examined, 165 were from female patients. Mean age was 81.7(± 6.6) years. Mean MMSE score was 21.6 (males: 21.9, females: 21.4). Significant correlation was detected between the overall MMSE score and both legibility and number of words. Legibility scores were significantly higher for females than for males (7.2 vs. 6.6, p < 0.03). The mean MMSE of females writing in lowercase was significantly higher than for those writing in uppercase (21.5 vs. 18.6, p < 0.05). The mean MMSE score of subjects writing sentences with a positive tone was significantly higher than that of those writing a neutral or negative sentence (22.6 vs. 21.0 p < 0.03).Conclusions: We have demonstrated a relationship between the content and structure of the writing assessment aspect of the MMSE and the overall test score.

Abstract:
We can find many reading books for low grade elementary school (SD) age in bookstores. However, these books have not been equipped with the sentence structure used. Therefore, a study is needed to determine the structure of the sentence structure used. The purpose of this study is to find out the sentence structure in the 2019 literacy reading book for elementary students published by the Language Development and Development Agency in 2019. According to Indonesian Standard Grammar, the sentence structure in question is the type of sentence based on the number of clauses, the type of predicate, the category of syntax, and completeness of the elements. In this paper, the intended sentence structure is only limited by the sentence structure based on the type of predicate. The research method uses a qualitative descriptive approach, namely by noting the sentence structure of fourteen 2019 literacy reading books for elementary school students to see the type of predicate. The results of the study are expected to be able to show the types of sentence structure in the 2019 literacy reading books for elementary students. The results of this study are also expected to be used as a reference for teachers. parents, and book writers in selecting and writing appropriate reading books for elementary school-aged children.
