Abstract The 22 May 2014 Duanesburg, New York, supercell produced an enhanced Fujita scale category 3 (EF3) tornado and 10-cm-diameter hail. The synoptic setup for the event was ambiguous compared to other documented cases of Northeast tornadoes. Mesoscale inhomogeneities due to terrain and baroclinic boundaries played a key role in the evolution and severity of the storm. The storm initiated at the intersection of an outflow boundary and a north–south-oriented baroclinic boundary. AbstractThe deglaciation record of the Ontario Lowland and Mohawk Valley of North America is important for constraining the retreat history of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, end-Pleistocene paleoclimate, and ice-sheet processes. The Mohawk Valley was an important meltwater drainage route during the last deglaciation, with the area around modern Oneida Lake acting as a valve for meltwater discharge into the North Atlantic Ocean. The Mohawk Valley was occupied by the Oneida Lobe and Oneida Ice Stream during the last deglacial period. Multichannel seismic reflection data can be used to generate images

Abstract On 31 May 1998, an F3 tornado struck Mechanicville, New York, injuring 68 people and causing $71 million in damage. The tornado was part of a widespread, severe weather outbreak across the northeast United States. The synoptic conditions that caused the outbreak and the mesoscale and storm-scale environments that produced the tornado are discussed. The coupling of two strong upper-level jets and a very strong low-level jet, in association with an unseasonably strong surface cyclone, created a synoptic-scale environment favorable for severe weather. Abstract:
AbstractDelina Filkins was born May 4, 1815 in Stark, Herkimer County, New York, a small village of less than 2000 persons in the Hudson River Valley, Upstate New York. Her father, William Ecker, and mother, Susanna Herwick, were descended from Dutch and German settlers that came to the Mohawk Valley, New York, in the 1700s. Living her entire life in the same area within a ten-mile radius, her life spanned over 113 years. With the exception of her great age and her generally good health, Delina’s life was rather ordinary: she lived most of it on the family farm, helping with family tasks such as spinning yarn and making clothes. Delina married John Filkins, a local farmer, at age 18 and they had six (possibly seven) children together, two of whom outlived her. Delina was noted for her age in very late life, with local coverage from about 1916, then reaching national attention in the 1920s. With the understanding that Delina’s age was generally considered to be reliable by the press at the time, her case is a candidate for the earliest validated person to reach age 113+. This chapter takes a closer look at the case and the documents available and concludes that the amount and consistency of the available documentation suggest that Delina Filkins did indeed reach age 113 in 1928.

Behavioural beliefs, normative beliefs and control beliefs were identified from participants’ answers using the theory of planned behaviour and thematic analysis. For successful implementation, it will be important to ensure that the predominant benefits (positive beliefs) emerging from this study are implemented (e.g., lower heating bills) and the barriers (negative beliefs) are avoided or alleviated (e.g., upfront costs). The results will be quantified in a follow-up, survey study.

Abstract:
AbstractThe results of multi-interferometric processing applied to radar images acquired by the European Space Agency (ESA) Sentinel-1 constellation, obtained in the framework of the IPL (International Programme on Landslides) project n.221, are presented in this manuscript. The target area is the Hunza-Nagar River valley, a remote area in northern Pakistan. The Humarri slide, a massive landslide located along the left side of the valley, is the most active phenomenon in the area, and poses a very high risk to the Humarri village built in the lowest part of the landslide, and a threat of damming the Hispar River. The highest deformation rates (with peaks higher than 300 mm/yr) were recorded in the middle and low part of the landslide. Where the Humarri village is located, the velocity values are lower and range between −30 and −80 mm/yr. The analysis of displacement time series, spanning from February 2017 to January 2020, reveal different deformation behaviors and different onset of accelerating behaviors within the landslide body. The global coverage, the wide-area mapping capabilities, and the regular acquisitions planning ensured by the Sentinel-1 constellation, coupled with InSAR ability to deliver very precise and spatially dense information, make it possible to scan wide areas and spot unstable zones, especially where remoteness, vast areal extension, and climatic conditions make it difficult to undertake field activities.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Mohawk Valley lies in northeastern California on the margin of the northernmost Sierra Nevada and was occupied by Mohawk Lake during much of the middle and late Pleistocene. Throughout that time, the Sierra Nevada ice cap repeatedly extended northward into Mohawk Lake, and ice-contact deltaic sediments were deposited along the valley margins and in the valley bottom. Nearly 200 m of lacustrine and deltaic sediments are now well exposed along streams draining the Sierra Nevada. Tephra beds deposited within the deltaic sediments allow correlation of stratigraphic sections around the valley margin and, together with geomorphic evidence of former lake levels, permit interpretation of a Mohawk Lake history as far back as 740 ka. Mohawk Valley changed from a through-flowing fluvial setting to an intermittent closed basin sometime before 740 ka. After this change occurred, relatively small lakes intermittently formed in Mohawk Valley until ca. 600 ka, when the lake dramatically deepened. Mohawk Lake fluctuated in size over the next ~400,000 yr and increased in size to its highest levels after ca. 200 ka, possibly due to drainage integration with the upstream Lake Beckwourth. After this time, Mohawk Lake spilled over its westward sill, incrementally eroding and lowering lake levels until Mohawk Lake was emptied by ca. 7 ka.

Abstract:
The Arctic Sound map area consists primarily of glacially scoured bedrock, minor till in the southwest, and postglacial marine sediments in coastal lowlands and inland along river valleys. The till deposits are cut to bedrock by subglacial meltwater corridors defined by eskers and other glaciofluvial sediments. Glacial lakes occupied the James River valley where retreating or stagnant ice blocked drainage to the east. Glaciolacustrine deltas record falling lake levels, from 310 m to 290 m and 260 m elevation. Striations and streamlined landforms indicate ice flow to the north-northwest, and la

Abstract:
This report presents the data collected in 2016 as part of the long-term terrestrial vegetation monitoring program at Channel Islands National Park. The purposes of the monitoring program are to document the long-term trends in the major vegetation communities within the park. The data collected are from 30 m point-line intercept transects. In the past, each transect was sampled annually. However, beginning in 2012 the program began adding randomly located transects to improve the representativeness of the sampling, and transitioned to a rotating panel design. Now only a core subset of the tra

Saguaro National Park, Tucson Mountain District (TMD) includes a portion of the Tucson Mountains and adjacent lower bajada landscapes along the western boundary in Avra Valley. Threats to TMD include urban encroachment, busy commuter roads running through the interior and along the boundaries, agricultural development, and the Arizona Canal and water recharge basin. Plans to route Interstate 11 within 400 m of the western boundary have led to concerns over projected negative impacts on wildlife. Among the species of concern is the Sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes), primarily because the populatio
