Abstract:
Contrasting the work of Genevieve Lloyd, Elizabeth Grosz, and Moira Gatens with the poststrueturalist philosophy of Judith Butler, this paper identifies a distinctive “Australian” feminism. It argues that while Butler remains trapped by the matter/representation binary, the Spinozist turn in Lloyd and Gatens, and Grosz's work on Bergson and Deleuze, are attempts to think corporeality.

Abstract:
As a constructive alternative to the exclusionary binaries of Cartesian philosophy, Genevieve Lloyd and Moira Gatens turn to Spinoza. Spinoza's understanding of the body as “in relation” takes the focus of philosophical thought from the homogeneous subject to the heterogeneity of the social, and the focus of politics from individual rights to collective responsibility. The implications for feminism are radical; Spinoza enables a reconceptualization of the imaginary and the possibility of a sociability of inclusion.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to deepen the philosophical feminist discussion of the concepts sex and gender by doing a new reading of Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex. The analysis takes its point of departure from Judith Butler's "Sex and gender in Simone de Beauvoir's Second Sex" (1986) and Moira Gatens' "On Beauvoir and biology: a second look" (2003). This means that my overall inquiry is opened up by the question if, and in that case how, The Second Sex can be said to offer other interpretations than those presented by Butler and Gatens. I analyze Butler and Gatens' interpretations in terms of how their arguments are built up, in order to lay out the ground for my own, alternative reading. I formulate two questions, related to my initial analysis of Butler and Gatens: Does Beauvoir make a distinction between nature and culture which effects the understanding of the existent as a sexed, situated being? What implication does her existential-phenomenological perspective have for the image of the body and the creation of meaning? My reading suggests that Beauvoir's existential-phenomenological perspective can illuminate the concept of gender through pointing out how the beings of woman and man are rooted in, and develop out of, humanity's quest for being. This is a theme I find rather undeveloped in Butler and Gatens' articles. The sexed, bodily being of the subject is actualized as the source of meaning in this primary quest. Body and sexuality make up the expression of the existent, and therefore must be studied with regards to how meaning is created and carried out by them. I argue that Beauvoir's ideas of corporeality, disclosing of being and transcendence deepen the concept of gender in giving an ontological context to the beings of woman and man. I also claim that gender, in itself, is a useful concept in designating the dynamic, contingent and culturally dependent quality of these beings. This does not support, however, the view that Beauvoir makes a sex/gender distinction along the lines of a separation of nature and culture. The relevance of gender lies in its ability to highlight that the beings of woman and man manifest certain characters.

Abstract:
The domestic cat exerts an welI known predation effect on birds and small mammals populations, namely on islands and urban areas. Although, the biggest threat is related to the wildcat integrity, through hybridization and competition for space and food, the last ones indirectly revealed by the degree of association of the domestic species to man and its environment. The goals of this study were to characterize the domestic cat diet on Moura-Barrancos (Alentejo) and determine the domestic cat predatory impact on wildlife species, comparing the results with those of distinct geographic areas: islands, urban areas and others rural areas. The domestic cat ruet in Moura-Barrancos was compared to wildcat diet in a national context, to understand the possible trophic competition between the two species. Between March and August 2007, domestic cat scats were collected in three rural farms located in favourable wildcat areas. The diet composition was expressed by frequency of occurrence and percentage of consumed biomass of each food item. ln the 166 analysed scats ,there were identified 473 different preys, separated in 8 principal groups (Lagomorpha: F.0.-l,48%, P.B.-4,36%; Rodentia: F.0.-26,85%; P.B.-9,61%; Insectívora: F.O.- 0,63%, P.B.-0,08%; Aves: F.0 .-7,19%, P.B.-11,02%; Reptilia: F.0.-I,48%, P.B.-0,03%; Arthropoda: F.0.-20,30%, P.B.-0,27%; Plant matter: F.O.-14,38%, P.B.-0,05% e Household food: F.O.-27,70%, P.B.-74,58%). The results indicate that domestic cats in Moura-Barrancos are opportunistic predators with feeding habits more generalized that those observed in others areas, and that the trophic competition doesn't represent a threat to the wildcat, since the domestic cats diet is based in household food and preys linked to man.
