Abstract:
In this paper, a series of experiments assessing the moisture buffer value (MBV) of four internal wall assembly samples made from hygroscopic materials was performed. A modified Nordtest protocol was used. Moisture buffer values of all the investigated wall assemblies, with varying moisture loads in the range of 50% to 80%, showed a moderate moisture buffer value (MBV: 0.5–1.0 (g·m−2·%RH−1)). The results showed that in a wall assembly where the MBV of the whole assembly is lower than the MBV of the outer layers, the moisture-buffering capacity of the inner layer is untapped. The scope of the Nordtest method is to evaluate the moisture buffer value (MBV) for materials exposed to indoor air. The test is intended to simulate daily variations with relative humidity (RH) of 75% during 8 hours and 33% during 16 hours. Many authors have noted that clay plaster has a very good MBV (Altmäe et al. 2019). Our previous tests have shown that the MBV of clay plaster can be increased by adding paper plaster mixture (Nutt et al. 2020a). The specimen made according to a recipe contains the following: waste paper, glue, clay plaster mixture and water. Eleven paper plaster mixtures w

SummaryLaboratory studies were conducted on four soils to ascertain the effect of P content and texture on the capacity factor (P buffering capacity) of soils and in turn the effect of these factors combined with moisture content of soil on the diffusion coefficient of P (Dp). A glasshouse experiment was conducted to study the relationship of Dp with P uptake by maize and wheat. The buffer capacity decreased by the application of P in all four soils. There was a significant negative correlation between buffer capacity and Olsen's extractable P but positive correlation with other soil factors.

A full-scale nuclear fuel waste disposal container experiment was carried out 240 m below ground in an underground granitic rock research laboratory in Canada. An electric heater was surrounded by buffer material composed of sand and bentonite clay and provided heat equivalent to what is anticipated in a Canadian nuclear fuel waste repository. During the experiment, the heat caused a mass transport of water and moisture content gradients developed in the buffer ranging from 13% closest to the heater to 23% at the rock wall of the deposition hole. pH-sensitive hydrogels based on chitosan-graft-poly(acrylamide-co-sodium acrylate) were synthesized via radical polymerization in solution. Ammonium persulfate was used as initiator, and various amounts of hexamine were used as a cross-linking agent. The structure of obtained hydrogels was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Moisture-absorbing power of hydrogels in buffer solution with various pH value (pH = 1.65; 4.01; 12.43) was investigated. It is turned out that such a copolymers have a high moisture retention capacity (swelling index attains the value 1100%) and are

Habitat degradation, fragmentation and loss are important factors causing loss in biodiversity and red listed species, and restoring habitats is essential in preventing this. However, there is a limited knowledge of the long term effects of restoration measures. This study focuses on analysing the long term restoration success of restoration measures carried out in a restoration program between the 1980's and early 2000's in locations of acidic fen, buffered fen, dry heather, wet heather, and wet grassland. Moisture level significantly affects durability of constructions, their thermal performance and quality of indoor air. Since building envelopes are subjected to a moisture gradient, additional ventilation systems are employed to maintain relative humidity on the desired level. Although modern advanced ventilation systems provide sufficient air exchange rate, their wider application is in conflict with sustainability development principles due to high energy demands. Moreover, according to the European legislation related to the Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (European Directives 2002/91/EC and 2
