Abstract:
Thesis (M. Sc. (Botany)) -- University of Limpopo, 2016<br>The need to conduct a detailed biological and ecological study on Euphorbia clivicola was sparked by the drastic decline in the sizes of the Percy Fyfe Nature Reserve (Mokopane) and Radar Hill (Polokwane) populations, coupled with the discovery of two new populations; one in Dikgale and another in Makgeng village. The two newly (2012) discovered populations lacked scientific data necessary to develop an adaptive management plan. This study aimed to conduct a detailed biological and ecological assessment, in order to develop an informed

All the viruses known to occur on dry beans in South Africa were found, as well as a few unidentified viruses. Of these, samples 93/1 and 93/65 form the basis of this thesis. Electron microscopy (EM) indicated that these viruses could be potyviruses, as they were flexuous particles of approximately 700 to 800 nm. In South Africa, 2 primate species, Chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) and vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus), and 2 nocturnal mammals, Cape porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis) and bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus), are among many species of crop raiders. Currently, cost-effective, non-lethal solutions are lacking. From June through December 2012, I installed novel electronic scarecrows on two commercial citrus orchards and a private reserve and used video-recording remote cameras to assess cropraiders’ reactions to them in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Technical efficiency is the ability of a farmer to obtain output from a given set of physical inputs. Farmers have a tendency of under and/or over- utilising the factors of production. Coastal dolphins on the South African east coast are threatened by degradation and loss of habitat as a result of increasing coastal development, industrial effluent and agricultural runoff. In addition, dolphins off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal have, for more than four decades, been heavily exploited through unchecked incidental capture in shark nets set at 45 beaches. In light of the high rate of mortality and apparent depletion of both species, the persistence of bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus) and humpback (Sousa chinensis) dolphins in that region has been questioned. Different strains dominate within different geographical regions, which is a reflection of micro-epidemics of drug resistance in the different regions. Cluster analysis shows that strains within the same strain family are different. The Beijing drug resistant strain family is the most dominant strain family (31%) in the Western Cape and of particular concern is the highly transmissibl

Despite the current TB epidemic, the disease can be treated effectively using isoniazid (INH) in combination with other antibiotics. However, INH is inactivated in the body by certain drug metabolising enzymes, which may reduce the efficacy of TB treatment. The activity of these drug metabolising enzymes, called NAT, a
