Abstract:
The emergence of spintronics (spin-based electronics), which exploits electronic charge as well as the spin degree of freedom to store/process data has already seen some of its fundamental results turned into actual devices during the last decade. Information encoded in spins persists even when the device is switched off; it can be manipulated with and without using magnetic fields and can be written using little energy. Eventually, spintronics aims at spin control of electrical properties (I-V characteristics), contrary to the common process of controlling the magnetization (spins) via applic

The coupling between electronic spins and lattice vibrations is fundamental for driving relaxation in magnetic materials. The debate over the nature of spin-phonon coupling dates back to the 1940s, but the role of spin-spin, spin-orbit, and hyperfine interactions has never been fully established. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the spin dynamics of a crystal of Vanadyl-based molecular qubits by means of first-order perturbation theory and first-principles calculations. We quantitatively determine the role of the Zeeman, hyperfine, and electronic spin dipolar interactions in the direc

This thesis explores the synthesis and characterisation of a range of molecular wheels containing unpaired electron spins. These molecular spin systems are of considerable interest, both for the insight they provide into the physics of such systems and for their potential as quantum bits ("qubits") in a quantum information processing device. In particular, this thesis explores using these wheels to meet criteria 1 and 5 of the DiVincenzo criteria. The synthesis of a novel homometallic and nonametallic ring of CrIII ions is introduced, along with extensive physical characterisation. Inelastic N

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been extensively used to investigate the structure and dynamics of host-guest systems. NMR spectroscopy has gained attention because of its high spectral information content for studies of molecules in the solid state and in solution. However, the main weakness of NMR is the inherent low detection sensitivity. Host-guest interactions are weak; therefore these interactions can be particularly difficult to study due to weak spectral response. NMR methods are currently the best solution for measuring these responses with atomic-scale precision
