Abstract:
This thesis explores the synthesis and characterisation of a range of molecular wheels containing unpaired electron spins. These molecular spin systems are of considerable interest, both for the insight they provide into the physics of such systems and for their potential as quantum bits ("qubits") in a quantum information processing device. In particular, this thesis explores using these wheels to meet criteria 1 and 5 of the DiVincenzo criteria. The synthesis of a novel homometallic and nonametallic ring of CrIII ions is introduced, along with extensive physical characterisation. Inelastic N

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been extensively used to investigate the structure and dynamics of host-guest systems. NMR spectroscopy has gained attention because of its high spectral information content for studies of molecules in the solid state and in solution. However, the main weakness of NMR is the inherent low detection sensitivity. Host-guest interactions are weak; therefore these interactions can be particularly difficult to study due to weak spectral response. NMR methods are currently the best solution for measuring these responses with atomic-scale precision

Abstract:
Wave-like phonons are often used to describe the heat capacity in materials. In this report the spin-phonon interaction between nuclei in a diatomic molecular structure is introduced by looking at the Hamiltonian in its ground state. The corresponding Green's functions are computed in order to investigate how this interaction affects the phonons. When calculating the spin, pseudo fermions and tensor products are introduced to make the calculation easier because the spin statistics could be a bit tricky to deal with. Three different cases of how the total interaction Hamiltonian behaves are inv
