Abstract:
The novels, essays, films and miscellanea of both Edgardo Cozarinsky (Buenos Aires, 1939) and Sylvia Molloy (Buenos Aires, 1938) offer a prime example of certain cultural and aesthetic tensions that are specific to contemporary Argentinian and Hispano-American literature. Despite the relative convention of their early literary output in the 1960s at the time when Victoria Ocampo was founding the legendary review Sur, the voluntarily unorthodox careers of the ever-elusive, errant and excentric Cozarinsky and Molloy have favoured literary projects that are marked first and foremost by the problematics of identity. For Cozarinsky and Molloy, the founding precepts of identity are called into question, repressed and scrutinized, their very instability posited as central to the artistic process. This study intends to outline the devenir écrivain — the process by which both authors were to become writers —, as well as a filmaker for Cozarinsky and teacher and literary critic in the case of Molloy. It charts the key turning points in their checkered yet cosmopolitan artistic trajectory, characterised as it was by bilingualism, a period working at the review Sur, the questioning of identity that Cozarinsky's Jewishness and Molloy's homosexuality necessarily required, together with the experience afforded by life abroad, the fact of pursuing twin careers, the impact of reading Borges and their late burgeoning as writers of literary fiction

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to identify which procedures Beckett uses in his novel Molloy in order to deconstruct the realist novel and to reinvent it in a literary aesthetics based on the deconstruction of language itself. Written in 1947, this work marks a new direction in Beckett's writing, which is transformed into what he calls the 'literature of the unword', thus bringing the genre to a different, self-reflexive level. By questioning the authority of the narrator, Beckett turns the systematization of doubt into the subject matter of the narrative. We investigate the trajectory of the narrators and discuss their function in a narrative that where the plot and action are less important than the presentation of the progressive degradation of the first-person narrators. Among the considerations on crisis of the novel, we analyze the elements that the narrator uses to deconstruct language, such as repetition, bilingualism, and language games.

Abstract:
The concept of performativity has been developed by different approaches, ranging from speech act theory (J. L. Austin) to anthropological studies (Victor Turner), and has been considered an epistemological model known as “performative turn”. The performative theory has turned into an analytical category that aims to investigate cultural phenomena as a representation of acts and discourses, reaching its peak by gender studies as created by Judith Butler and the Performance Studies as a tool to analyze dramatic performances. However, its application to narrative phenomena has been scarce and there hardly exists any perspectives that would allow to consider gender as a performance within a novel.Based on the theory of gender performativity (Butler) and drama performance as modifiers of spectators’ realities, the present work aims in the first place to fuse both concepts and establish an epistemological framework that allows the analysis of gender performances in narrative fiction. Among these concepts the anti-essentialist ones by Butler about sex and gender, taboo, gender libretos and parody, stand out, as well as the elements of every performative act as depicted by Erika Fischer-Lichte in her theory on performance: unpredictability, perception and ambivalence.A corpus of contemporary Argentine literature was used to put into practice this theory. It consists of the novels Ganarse la muerte by Griselda Gambaro, El común olvido by Sylvia Molloy and “Letargo” by Perla Suez. The authors of these texts make use of a wide range of narrative strategies whose analysis will prove how gender is performed in novels

Abstract:
In What is Philosophy? (1994) Deleuze and Guattari distinguish between three kinds of thought each in its own way capable of creation: philosophic, scientific, and artistic. The three forms exist as three separate planes. The philosopher creates concepts on the plane of immanence; the scientist lays down functions on the plane of reference or coordination by creating figures or undertaking partial observations; the artist creates affects or sensations on the plane of composition. These three forms of thought are understood as the three active responses of the human brain faced with the chaos of Being; active and necessarily ongoing responses laying down planes on which their concepts, affects, and functions are constantly in movement. These forms are distinguished from 'opinion', a reactive response which pretends that chaos can be tamed once and for all by insisting that concepts, functions, and affects can be forever fixed in place. The three forms not only define themselves against chaos then, they are also in constant conflict with opinion which strives to limit their creation. Throughout What is Philosophy? the purity of the distinction between the three planes is stressed. Indeed Deleuze and Guattari‘s project in this their final book together is to think these very distinctions, to unravel strands of discourse that often appear hopelessly intertwined, to trace the defining creative potential of each discipline. Their chapter on art in particular (’Percept, Affect, and Concept’) seems a remarkable process of alchemy in which the very essence of art is distilled. They demonstrate that art does not represent, it creates affects or sensations (through the transmission of perceptions) which occur in the present existence of the spectator, reader, or listener. The artist invents affects before unknown, and we experience them immanently when we experience the art. These sensations are not representations: we feel, we really feel the affects that have been created. The purity of the distinctions is one of the things which resonates. Deleuze and Guattari conclude that the 'three planes, along with their elements, are irreducible' (1994, 216). Yet in drawing this conclusion they concede that there is of course interference; that the distinctions they have made so clear for us, which have been defined with such elegance, were drawn in fact from a seeming confusion. The chaos is still present. Their book has demonstrated the process of philosophic creation they have described: they have created concepts and set them in motion on the plane of immanence which has been formed over chaos. Yet in the process they have demonstrated that the chaos is not alone in being real, they have indicated an order which also really is.

Abstract:
Samuel beckett, julien gracq, henri michaux were writing in an epoch in which the power of man was put into question, through his own strengh, symbolised by hiroshima. For the first time in history, a warlike impulse became a threat of final destruction. It was during those years of cold war that the three authors started to distrust words and meaning. They chose the way of "wandering" in order to loosen writing from a knowledge acquired through the ages. The "wandering" text is a place of conflict: - the conflict between the words full of desire of a son whose certainties were forfeited to the ghost of a father who was willing to impose the words of an obsolete will and power. -the conflict between the emphasis on words that gives rise to an unpronounceable statement and the decanting of words to bring speech back to the dictator, against aphasia, the "wandering" writing is evolving towards a language for oneself, with no heritage, not to be transmitted. However it is a language that allows progression and gives way to a literature free from the words of power, of will, of knowledge. The "passing", "wandering" text conveys a mental empression of its history

Abstract:

Abstract:
Charles R. Lyons Samuel Beckett (1983), Richard N. Coes Beckett (1968) samt portalverket till den absurda teatern, Martin Esslins The Theatre of the Absurd (1961).

The term worklessness became one of the main concepts in the literary criticism of the 20th century. Abstract:
The critical discourse surrounding beckett's opus is, in reality, no more than a repetition of the meta-discourse of "failure" that the work develops within itself by means of its narrators. Thus the trilogy, contrary to general opinion, is a perfectly controlled and coherent construction in which the so-called failure achieves, through the diversity of its forms, an oppositional function that gives the text its dynamic. Conceived as an open structure, the work is open to reality : that of the writer, samuel beckett. A system of projection of narrators, possessing trans-textual knowledge, creates three levels of novelistic discourse ; each level is situated at one further remove from the author's reality. The trilogy is also open to fiction since its novelistic spaces are inter-linked via three writing programmes, activated in the english molloy, each of which coincides with one of the novels in the trilogy. These programmes are to be considered as three stages of a single identatory and scriptual goal belonging to one common narrator. Furthermore, they are contained within a larger programme, infinite in principal, and of which the trilogy itself is, in turn, only a stage. On the identatory level, there are two programmes that exist in ___oppositipn : one actualised but rejected, the other desired but considered inaccessible. These are the source of a textual dynamic, that is constantly renewed by a painful quest for the self, through the several hypostases of the m-character. The textual dynamic is equally created by the interdependence of the levels of signification, particularly in malone dies, which functions as an auto-analytical text

Abstract:
Title from PDF of title page.
Document formatted into pages; contains 90 pages.
Thesis (M.A.)--University of South Florida, 2001.
Includes bibliographical references.
Text (Electronic thesis) in PDF format.
ABSTRACT: My thesis explores how discourse and material practices have created agoraphobia, the fear of public places. This psychological disorder predominates among women. Throughout much of Western history, women have been encouraged to stay home for their safety and for the safety of society. I argue that agoraphobic women have internalized this discourse, expressing fears of being in public or being alone without a companion to support and protect them; losing control over their minds or their bodies; and endangering or humiliating themselves. Therapeutic discourse also has created agoraphobia by naming it, categorizing the emotions and behaviors associated with it, and describing the characteristics of agoraphobics.
The material practice of therapy reinforces this discourse. Meanwhile, practices such as rape and harassment reinforce the dominant discourse on women&softsign;s safety. I survey psychological literature, beginning with the naming of agoraphobia in 1871, to explain why the disorder is now diagnosed primarily in women. I examine nineteenth-century discourse that told women they belonged at home while men controlled the public domain. In 1871, the Paris Commune revolt epitomized the fear of women publicly out of control. I return to Paris a century later for a reading of the novel Certificate of Absence, in which Sylvia Molloy explores identity through the eyes of a woman who might be labeled agoraphobic.
I ask whether homebound women are resisting or retreating from a hostile world. Instead of seeing agoraphobia only as a personal problem, people should question why so many women fear themselves and the world outside their home.My methodology includes an analysis of nineteenth-century texts as well as current media, prose, and poetry. I also support my arguments with material from professional journals and nonfiction books in different disciplines. Common to feminist research, an interdisciplinary approach was needed to situate a psychological disorder within a social context.
System requirements: World Wide Web browser and PDF reader.
Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses identity in Molly Keane and Kate O'Brien's novels, which were published after the proclamation of the Irish Free State (1922). By using a perspective which encompasses three aspects nationality, class and gender it is argued that both writers depict a conflictive and ambiguous identity that cannot harmonise its privileged class features (Anglo-Irish or middle class) with its subaltern female nature, which agrees to the cultural construction of femininity imposed by the current ideological discourses.
The theoretical framework that informs the thesis relies on Bakhtin's ideas on the chronotope, polyglossia/heteroglossia and carnival, as well as on the concepts of emphasised femininity and hegemonic masculinity developed in gender studies (Connell). The thesis makes the case for the existence of a weak dialogism in the novels, since gender discourses preclude class and nationality ones from surfacing. Class, nation and gender discourses are all couched in the scope of the carnival. This conveys the possibility to interrogate the cultural construction of identity by enhancing its grotesque, humorous and marginal representations. However, it is suggested that carnival favours the dismantling of gender identities but at the same time it may enable the stereotyping of nation and class identities. That is, O'Brien and Keane's protest against the cultural construction of gender is counteracted by the acceptance of the nation and class discourses they try to avoid.
Departing from a socio-historical panorama of the independent Ireland, the thesis targets the relation between the dominant discourses and the main topics of the novels. The chronotope of the family house illustrates the predominance of literary motives: the house (the Big House and the catholic middle class house); it also discloses a feminine perspective which inverts the rules of the so-called feminine literary genres by rejecting happy endings, the prominence of love and perfect marriages. At the same time, the chronotope exposes nationality and class discourses concealed in the narrator's comments and the acts performed by both the privileged and unprivileged characters.
Class and nationality discourses are also part and parcel of the depiction of the masculinities and femininities in the house. Femininities respond to the discourses of good behaviour and la pudeur et la politesse, in Keane's and O'Brien's novels respectively, which are an examples of emphasised femininity. This is a cultural construction of femininity based on the acceptance of a beauty ideal, the reproduction of mothering and internalisation of romance through reading. Similarly, hegemonic masculinity is defined on terms of its public, rather than private, scope, its fathering role and its violence, especially when masculinity becomes hypermasculinity.
Alternatives to emphasised femininity and hegemonic masculinities are also explored by decoding the discourses of sex and snobbery in Keane's works and protesting conscience in O'Brien's. These attempt to question the ideal of beauty by emphasising the performance of the female masquerade and its ironic and grotesque effects. They also account for a female gaze which does not correspond to male desire, as well as vindicate the need to educate women instead of preparing them for marriage. An appraisal of hegemonic masculinity is also traced by depicting homosexual masculine identities which do not only confront hegemonic masculinity but also blur the very concept of identity.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis work is devoted to the optical manipulation and deformation of soft liquid interfaces, in two fundamental geometries: plane and spherical. We then show that the deformations induced by optical radiation pressure allow to deduce the properties of interfaces, such as interfacial tension for example. In the framework of the deformation of a plane liquid interface by optical radiation pressure, we generalize for the first time the electro-hydrodynamic manifestation of Taylor cones to the optical regime, showing that liquid cones can emerge under intense laser excitation. We then characterized the morphology of these "optical cones" and we show that their angle depends both on the parameters of the laser excitation and on the characteristics of the fluids. An analytical study as well as a numerical investigation were then conducted to account for the observed behaviors. In order to study the deformation of soft interfaces in spherical geometry, we have developed a fiber-based dual-beam optical trap in a microfluidic device in a novel configuration in terms of excitation wavelength and laser power. We then applied our device to the deformation of vesicles as soft model objects and we show that our dual-beam trap is well adapted to the rheological characterization of deformable micron-sized objects. Thanks to the use of high laser power beams, we experimentally highlight the appearance of a non-linear deformation regime within our double optical trap

Abstract:
This thesis explores the symbolic and sensory dimensions of local carnival celebrations in the southern French village of Prats de Mollo. During carnival an ideal, locally-rooted Prateen community is articulated and experienced by participants through repeated acts of commensality and physical displays of friendship that are intensified by carnival's sensual indulgences and ritual interactions in public space. The aesthetic dimensions of carnival festivities in Prats de Mollo thus reflect an enduring desire for experiences of belonging that are deeply implicated in and informed by an affective relationship between self, community, and place, but that are at the same time in dialogue with a number of wider social processes currently shaping daily life in Prats de Mollo. These include the continued urbanization of rural areas in the Pyrenees, contemporary negotiations of French and Catalan identities in France, and increasing tourism in the region.

Benth.
This work describes the chemical investigation of chloroformic and ethyl acetate extracts from the stem of Cratylia mollis Mart ex. This is one of the most abundant plant of the brazilian northeastern, especially the Semi-arid region and, it is popularly known as “camaratu” and “camaratuba”. In this region it is employed as substitute of cattle´s alimentation. Thus, the methanol extract of stem C. mollis was submitted to liquid:liquid partition between MeOH/H2O:Hex, MeOH/H2O:CHCl3 e AcOEt:H2O. The chloroformic and ethyl acetate extracts were submitted to CC and TLC over silica gel and gel permeation on Sephadex LH20. The identification and structural elucidation of pure compounds were based on analysis of the data obtained from the spectroscopic methods including NMR bidimensional experiments. From the chloroformic extract were isolated 2’-hydroxy-6,7-methylenodioxyflavan and 7,2’-dihydroxy-6- methoxyflavan, besides of the new flavan 7,3’dihydroxy-6,2’-dimethoxyflavan, pinoresinol, vanilin and the new flavanol 2R*,3S*-7,3’-dihydroxy-6,2’-dimethoxy- flavan-3-ol. Gottfried August Bürger (1747-1794) was one of the most important poets of the Sturm und Drang. His most famous works are the ballads "Lenore" and "Der wilde Jäger", and the translation and new elaboration of the original englisch novel "Münchhausen". I analyse here his so-called "Molly-Lieder", that is poems that he dedicated to her sister-in-law, which he loved madly. For the first time, I determine the exact number of the "Molly-Lieder". I also propose a new interpretation of the famous Schiller's review of Bürger's poetry.

Full text
Abstract:
Biomechanical analysis of human movement using optoelectronic system and skin markers considers body segments as rigid bodies. However the soft tissue motion relative to the bone, including muscles, fat mass, results in relative displacement of markers. This displacement is the results of two components, an own component which corresponds to a random motion of each marker and an in-unison component corresponding to the common movement of skin markers resulting from the movement of the underlying wobbling mass. While most studies aim to minimize these displacements, computer simulation models have shown that the movement of the soft tissue motion relative to the bones reduces the joint kinetics. This observation is only available using computer simulations because there are no methods able to distinguish the kinematics of wobbling mass of the bones kinematics. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a numerical method able to distinguish this different kinematics. The first aim of this thesis was to assess a local optimisation method for estimating the soft tissue motion using intra-cortical pins screwed into the humerus in three subjects. The results show that local optimisation underestimates of 50% the marker displacements. Also it leads to a different marker ranking in terms of displacement. The limit of local optimisation comes from the fact that it does not consider all the components of the soft tissue motion, especially the in-unison component. The second aim of this thesis was to develop a numerical method that accounts for all the component of the soft tissue motion. More specifically, this method should provide similar kinematics and estimate large marker displacement and distinguish the two components to conventional approaches. The lower limb is modeled using a 10 degree of freedom chain model reconstructed using global optimisation and the markers placed only on the pelvis and the medial face of the shank. The original estimate of joint kinematics without considering the markers placed on the thigh and on the calf avoids the influences of these markers displacement on the kinematic model reconstruction. This method was tested on 13 subjects who performed hopping trials and obtained up to 2.1 times of marker displacement depending the method considered ensuring similar joint-kinematics. A vector approach shown that marker displacements is more induce by the in-unison component. A matrix approach combining the local optimisation and the kinematic model shown that the wobbling mass moves around the longitudinal axis and along the antero-posterior axis of the bone. The originality of this thesis is to numerically distinguish the bone kinematics from the wobbling mass kinematics and the two components of the soft tissue motion. The methods developed in this thesis increases the knowledge on soft tissue motion and allow future studies to consider their movement in joint kinetics calculation.

Abstract:
This partial biography of West Australian nurse and author, Mary Louisa (Mollie) Skinner (1876-1955), is an in-depth study of the period covered by her posthumously published autobiography The Fifth Sparrow (1972), which was itself an edited and sanitized version of her 1952 memoir. It is also an experiment in biographical method, shaped by the Buddhist concept Anatta (essencelessness, or soullessness). The study brings to light many of Skinner’s hitherto undiscovered writings and much of the subtext concerning the influence this once well-connected woman was able to wield. It also interrogates the point of view that her collaboration with D H Lawrence on the novel The Boy in the Bush was an ‘unlikely’ one. Using Skinner’s conceptualisations of ‘The Hand of God’ as external agent, along with Lawrence's conceptualisations of the ‘Biological Psyche’, it outlines the struggle to ‘be someone’ in light of existential insubstantiality. In so doing, it undermines the depiction of biographical subject as instigatory agent. Anatta is a concept resonating throughout contemporary cognitive science and is therefore, it is here argued, an ideal biographical tool.

Abstract:
This thesis offers a case study in adapting Australian literary biography to the theatre, specifically in the form of a one woman show or monologue performance. The thesis consists of a novel play script, together with exegetical writing which outlines the source materials used and the process and themes under consideration. These themes include those of family (specifically a difficult relationship with her mother), love (including a lesbian affair), life as an aspiring writer, and the protagonist’s difficult to shake sense of damage, pain and struggle. The play offers a portrait of West Australian writer Mollie Skinner (1876- 1955). Sources included her autobiography (both the original manuscript and that edited and published by Mary Durack), Mollie’s novels and her letters—particularly her extensive correspondence with the British author D.H. Lawrence, who she met in WA—and secondary writings. Skinner’s writing has been described as akin to an “untended garden,” rich in imagery, but scattered and often difficult to follow. In recognition of this, my play takes the form of a series of vignettes and images, a succession of heightened moments, choreographed with sound and movement elements for dramatic impact. Mollie’s life thereby emerges as one marked by pain and suffering, yet suffused with rich language and visions. Although Mollie was more than just a friend of D.H. Lawrence, it is nevertheless clear that the better known author offered her support and encouragement that few others did. Together with her Sybil these two figures emerge as Mollie’s only true loves and companions, figures physically separated from her, yet who enabled her life and many of her joys. Skinner emerges then as a modest but indomitable spirt, poised on the veranda, looking at the world through her failing eyesight; touched by the beauty of it all. The aim of the play is thus to do justice to the spirit of Skinner, without presenting an exhaustive account of her entire life, and in doing so, to present her story to a new generation of West Australians.

Abstract:

The substance 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (a.k.a., MDMA, Ecstasy, Molly, Midomafetamine) is currently listed by the Food and Drug Administration as a breakthrough therapy for post traumatic stress disorder. The drug however remains a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States, and is listed in the top four most frequently used recreational drugs. Use by young people in social venues like all night dance parties (raves) and clubs around the world is widely documented, but evidence suggests that an increasing demographic of users is older adults (over age 27). Research is lacking about how this growing demographic uses MDMA and how assumptions of illegal/deviant models of drug use may or may not apply. Several decades of research on MDMA produced three primary models of use: the psycho-spiritual model, medical/psychotherapeutic model, and the illegal/deviant model. Each model of use is socially constructed along certain epistemological assumptions about users and the sought after outcome or effects of the drug. It is currently unclear which model of use older demographics of users fit within or if an entirely new model of use is needed to understand evolving trends. The current grounded theory investigation used snowball sampling methods to recruit adult participants who actively use MDMA in privacy with their committed partner. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore eight couples’ experiences using MDMA with their partner. Transcripts were analyzed with an iterative process of open and focused coding, followed by member checking. Major themes reported by couples include a different reason to relate to each other, serving me in so many ways, added depth to relationship and practice returning to MDMA experience. Together, themes from this study support a cognitive-relational model of recreational MDMA use, that is best described as a process that involves acquisition of knowledge, rational thinking, reasoning, and collaboration about ingesting MDMA together, all based on the expectation of durable change to their relationship together and other relationships in their lives. This investigation provides a critical lens for uncovering epistemological assumptions of other models, and provides a pathway for research into the use of medicines and drugs in the context of committed relationships.
