The natural product chemistry of six species of South African opisthobranch molluscs and some of their dietary marine invertebrates was investigated. Nineteen previously undescribed secondary metabolites and twelve known compounds were isolated and their structures determined by a combination of spectroscopic and chemical methods. The cosmopolitan distribution of the anascan bryozoan Electra pilosa manifests itself in the phenotypic plasticity of growth morphology expressed. The columellar muscle of both limpets and coiled shell gastropods is of the paramyosin smooth type. Collagen forms an integral part of the musculature constituting about 35% of the tissue. In limpets, muscle organisation is typical of a muscular hydrostat. Tightly packed blocks of muscle, dense arrays of cross-linked collagen, large muscle cells (9 µm diameter) and thick filaments (70 nm diameter, 30 µm long) produce a tough, relatively rigid but powerful muscle. The aim of the present study was to determine the potential impact of intertidal grazers on the distribution of macro algae on the south coast of South Africa. Particular attention was paid to the large patellid limpet, Patella oculus, which is found thoughout the intertidal zone. Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) together with potentially toxic metals (PTMs), are present in large amounts in sewage sludge which was used as a tool to expose terrestrial molluscs to environmental concentrations of these pollutants. Density, species diversity, species richness, and evenness of bivalve mollusks were measured in the deep (0.2km to 3.7km) northern Gulf of Mexico to describe the community structure of benthic bivalve mollusks. Density decreased gradually from shallow continental slope depths, with remarkably high values in the Mississippi canyon, to the deepest sites. Various ecological parameters, including soil pH, calcium, and habitat complexity have been suggested in the literature as having influence on land snail abundance and diversity. I compared relationships between 15 ecological parameters and snail abundance and diversity. 5,393 snails of 72 species were collected from 60 sites in 2007.
