Abstract:
In this paper, we use a corpus of about 100,000 happy moments written by people of different genders, marital statuses, parenthood statuses, and ages to explore the following questions: Are there differences between men and women, married and unmarried individuals, parents and non-parents, and people of different age groups in terms of their causes of happiness and how they express happiness? Can gender, marital status, parenthood status and/or age be predicted from textual data expressing happiness? The first question is tackled in two steps: first, we transform the happy moments into a set of topics, lemmas, part of speech sequences, and dependency relations; then, we use each set as predictors in multi-variable binary and multinomial logistic regressions to rank these predictors in terms of their influence on each outcome variable (gender, marital status, parenthood status and age). For the prediction task, we use character, lexical, grammatical, semantic, and syntactic features in a machine learning document classification approach. The classification algorithms used include logistic regression, gradient boosting, and fastText. Our results show that textual data expressing moments of happiness can be quite beneficial in understanding the “causes of happiness” for different social groups, and that social characteristics like gender, marital status, parenthood status, and, to some extent age, can be successfully predicted form such textual data. This research aims to bring together elements from philosophy and psychology to be examined by computational corpus linguistics methods in a way that promotes the use of Natural Language Processing for the Humanities.

Abstract:
This research concerns the relation of subjective control and happiness within normal daily experience. Respondents from several nonclinical samples rated their feelings of control at randomly-selected moments during a week in their lives, following the procedures of the Experience Sampling Method. Analyses consider the relation of these ratings to similar ratings of affective states, first, within persons and, second, between persons. The within-person analyses show relatively little moment-to-moment correlation of subjective control and affective states. For many persons there is no correlation at all and on the average people report feeling only slightly more happy at times when feeling in control. The between-persons analyses yield findings that are more in line with explanations of subject control, showing that individuals reporting higher average daily control also experience greater average happiness. The results confirm that a generalized sense of control is important to well being in daily life, but for nondisturbed individuals short-term experiences of discontrol are not accompanied by substantial distress.

Abstract:
In this study we are dealing with a new aspect of the problem in discussion that is the pursuing of Happiness, supported by institutions and regulations in the domain, but in moments of disturbances, in moments of crisis. We need to have goals, actions to be accomplished, in order to achieve the desired state of satisfaction or Happiness that anyone can have. We are in the presence of a double determination: the first one is represented by the material, especially money background, influencing the life and activities of households and entities and, the second one is represented by the reverse action that is of Happiness affecting the management and the activities of individuals, households and firms/organizations. The survey of the literature in the field, data from the World Health Organization, from the national authorities, analyses of the specialists in healthcare and economics, reports of the people in difficult health and economic situations are used in order to be able to synthesize the situation at this moment and possible forecasts regarding medical healing and economic recovery of the countries. Nothing is hard to manage, if you have knowledge, required abilities/skills to anticipate challenges or to make fast and right decisions, altogether at Micro and Macro-levels, in the benefit of all parts involved in. The huge interest is to reestablish the economies, mental health of people, i.e. the elements of a functional economic infrastructure.

Abstract:
Slogans have a thousand-year history and have always played a significant role in the life of the Chinese people. Many slogans have become precedent symbols of certain historical eras, not only do they reflect important moments in the country’s political life, but also the linguistic picture of the world. Perceived subconsciously, the content of slogans becomes a guideline for people’s conduct. In slogans you can see traditions and customs of the Chinese, as well as understand the realities of the time in which they appeared, history and culture of the country.Slogans, used by the Chinese leadership to broadcast the main political installations, are one of the means of propaganda. They still remain in China one of the most popular means of disseminating information. Written in different styles, with different content, slogans do not lose their relevance and remain an important element of Chinese culture. At present, when coding of knowledge has to a greater extent a rationalistic basis, slogans play a more significant role. The article considers slogans about happiness in different time periods, which allows you to find out how the Chinese’s perception of happiness was changing in the course of time.

Abstract:
Happiness, life and liberty are central terms in the history of philosophy. At the same time, they belong to the core of Christianity. We find these key terms already in the New Testament and we also find that reflections on these terms have defined their meanings in new ways throughout the centuries. I show the way how the original meanings have gradually changed. In contemporary reflections, we find interesting attempts to reform the traditional meanings, in which the influence of the natural sciences and twentieth century philosophies (such as phenomenology, existentialism, Marxism and post-modernism) have proven to be decisive. Christianity-oriented philosophies in contemporary academia, such as those of Michel Henry or Jean-Luc Marion, offer versions of these thoughts. The main defect of the traditional understandings may be seen simply their isolationist approach, that is to say, their approach to consider these terms as unrelated to one another. My own solution finds the common structure in the reality of revelation and considers life, liberty, and happiness as moments only insufficiently grasped by traditional approaches.

Loussouarn, Claire. "'Buying moments of happiness' : luck, time and agency among Chinese casino players in London." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2010. http://research.gold.ac.uk/6514/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how Chinese individuals experience social change as a result of migration and how this takes shape in the practice of casino gambling in the UK. In London, a high proportion of casino customers are of Chinese origin, especially in those casinos which are situated in the vicinity of Chinatown where I carried out fieldwork. In the thesis, the nature of this relationship is reconsidered as a mutual encounter against the political and economic background of the British gambling environment, a phenomenological description of gamblers’ actions when they are gambling and an examination of how migration is experienced by different individuals. The aim is to challenge the perception of gambling as an irrational activity which presupposes a restricted conception of time, economic rationality and success. As such, this thesis focuses on Chinese gamblers’ ideas of luck, fate and greed and reflects on the different ideas of success that emerge from risk taking of various kinds including in business, through migration and last, but not least, in the casino. It demonstrates that the relationship between time and money cannot be assumed but must be reconsidered in situ through the way individuals create and experience different temporalities and rationalities via the circulation of money. The casino is a particularly illuminating place since the articulation of time and money is constructed in contrast with the notion of time discipline that dominates most other life rhythms. This means that even though the circulation of money and the flow of time may be suspended or slowed down in the aftermath of the migration journey, the space of the casino, with its contained spatiotemporality, still offers the opportunity to experience movement in a repeated and systematic manner. To summarise, this thesis shows how Chinese people in London shape and re-shape their selves forming different temporalities and using various ways of exchanging money.

This research use the performance notion from studies of Department of Performance Studies at New York University, especially in the work of the playwright Richard Schechner, and pounces toward “Por Instantes de Felicidade” (“Moments of Happiness”), Quasar Dance Companycelebrating spetacle its twentieth anniversary. This work, therefore, questions itself about the historical journey of this company; about how its national and international projection occurs and about its characteristics as a dancer producer to thenceforth to do a poetic reading about this spectacle. In order to get that, this paper proposes a conceptual reflection that signals the epistemological view cast upon the documents of this show and about this company, and it makes a detailed description of the spectacle “Por Instantes de Felicidade” to perceive it formally and contextually. The reading of the show counts on the video images of its local premiere on April 18 and 20, 2008 at Teatro Goiânia, with the extras of such a DVD, an interview with the choreographer Henrique Rodovalho and a writing questionnaire with the interpreter Daniel Calvet. One of the conclusions reached in the research is that the show studied excels by a virtuous performance of dance and that its strong self-referential content ends up characterizing it as a spectacle fundamentally entertainment, especially for its theme to be commemorative. From the interviews conducted with the dancers João Paulo Gross, Marcos Buiati and Martha Cano, who danced it in later years, it is concluded, among other things, that this vigorous performative pattern of the company is physically very demanding for the bodies of the performers.

This creative discourse is focused on painting projects I completed during the 2009-2012 period. To me, an artwork is something transformed from my self-perception and lifestyle, beginning as part of everyday life to reflect personal circumstances. The content of my paintings addresses the thought patterns in my pursuit of both happiness and synesthesia with viewers. As far as form is concerned, my paintings are chiefly collages of color blocks, the prototypes and structures of which may disappear repeatedly when varied technical interferences are applied to destroy their images. However, the two conflicting “painter’s languages” in those images, namely the visually cool and calm color blocks painted with flat washes, as opposed to the relatively free and strong visual impact, gentle trickles or merged edges, indicate a chasm caused by uncontrollable factors and interference in the circumstances. The paintings created are attempts at connecting myself with the circumstances. By exploring my own paintings, collecting the literature, and examining various aspects of my works (from the external forms to internal intentions) during the research process, I wanted to establish the context in which my paintings were created, and then put them under scrutiny and into practice. The main structure of this discourse comprises three chapters. Whereas Chapter 1 provides an outline of the substantive components, underlying beliefs and conceptual expressions of my paintings, Chapter 2 reviews their relevant literature, forms, theories and viewpoints through descriptions or analyses corresponding to my artistic context. Chapter 3 offers a summary of the two preceding chapters, in addition to a comparison between my personal circumstances against my practice as a painter, with the projects explained in short essays of prose-or diary-style. My self-perception as an artist was enhanced and clarified through this written discourse, which involved cross-referencing between theories and practices. In the final part of this study is a conclusion of some general thoughts about synesthesia and my paintings, which would hopefully provide goals or guidance to my future projects.

The paintings created by the author mainly capture the feeling of happiness within personal memory. For example, even young girls have grown up and married as ladies; the innocence and sweet flavor of girls in the period of school days still exist in memory of the author and her classmates as critical connections among each other. Then, new lives given birth by these women become the key players of their daily lives. Any expression, action of children, such as innocent smile, cry or whine, for the author always come with the feeling of happiness. The author wants these happy moments have been captured in paintings. Through action research and qualitative thinking with elaborate paintings and related literature review, the connotation of happiness is expected to show in the paintings to achieve the complementary effects within creation and research. The summary of this thesis and art creation is as following: 1. According the topic of thesis: capturing the moment of happiness, I review personal experience and observe at environments to capture the touching moment by painting. 2. Through the study of related art schools with reflection on aesthetic theories, the creative ideas for those painting are emerged. 3. The process of painting helps the author to find personal art style. The self-affirmation is also enhanced by the works of art. Those paintings are completed in the cycle of creation and reflection.
