Greed is the most condemned sin by Dante Alighieri in his Comedy. To understand this condemnation, in this paper, it is opted for a dualist lecture of Purgatory, i.e., one that allows us to consider both what reason understands human virtue and vice and what one must accept by the Christian faith. To achieve this, some of Dante's theological and political ideas are recovered from his treatise Monarchia.

This paper examines the prose rhythm in Dante’s Latin and Italian prose. The samples of Dante’s Latin books De vulgari eloquentia and De Monarchia and the Italian book Convivio are analysed with the purpose of finding the incidence and patterns of prose rhythm. The method used in this paper is comparative-statistical analysis. The rhythm of classic prose was based on the quantity of syllables, while the medieval Latin prose rhythm was based on word stress and called cursus. Although the use of cursus was more popular in Latin prose, it can also be found elsewhere, including Italian prose. The

It seeks to demonstrate how Dante's unmodern acceptance of a teleological understanding of the world and man’s place in it allows him to distinguish the two while also showing how both work together even as they understand differently the role that reason should play in human life. Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) has traditionally been viewed through the lens of his poetic masterpiece, the Commedia. While his so-called “minor” works, including the overtly political book four of Convivio and the treatise Monarchia, have been studied, much of this work tends to read Dante through the theologized, over-determined hermeneutic of the narrative of his poetic journey through the afterlife. Also, because of the overwhelming temptation to associate Dante’s place in intellectual history with his clerical contemporaries in Paris and Bologna, a similar trend (often combined with the fir

Abstract:
This chapter examines texts in which a medieval poet, Dante Alighieri, and a Renaissance humanist, Lorenzo Valla, handle the historical drama which controlled the European imagination for at least a thousand years: the drama of Pilate and Jesus. Both writers treat the gospels’ trial narratives in a that way reveals, to their minds, the corruption of the medieval “papal monarchy” (as it is called). For both Dante and Valla, the crucial moment is that in which Jesus renounces, before Pilate, “the kingdoms of the world”. If Jesus had not made this “great refusal”—as first formulated by Augustine, and received by Dante, Valla, and later European philosophers—there is reason to believe that the secular could not have been theorized, or progressively actualized, in Europe.
