Abstract:
This short introduction explains how Part II, “Visual Images,” engages with existing debates in visual international politics through chapters addressing the aesthetic turn in international relations (Chapter 4), visual securitization (Chapter 5), and ethical witnessing (Chapter 6). To make these arguments, it uses a range of visual images—photographs, documentary films, feature films, online videos, and visual art—to discuss visuality/visibility, ideology/affect, and cultural governance/resistance. Using these examples, Part II examines how visual culture studies and visual IR have used the visibility strategy to deconstruct visual images in order to reveal their hidden ideology. It argues that while exploring important issues, this research agenda is also limited by its hermeneutic mode of analysis and by its narrow focus on Euro-American images of security, war, and atrocity. It seeks to push beyond this verbally-inflected mode of analysis to see not just what images mean, but what they can “do” in provoking affective communities of sense. Part II thus employs comparative analysis and critical aesthetics to juxtapose concepts, practices, and experiences from different times and places.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that Perec’s engagement with the Oulipo at a crucial moment in the group’s history crystallizes the political potential of the Oulipian project, and determines the continuing significance of the group for today’s writers. Perec develops a mode of formal experiment that is perhaps ‘not so very anti’ when compared to the radically oppositional stance of the avant-garde, but which burrows beneath surfaces, exposing hidden determinisms and unexpected coincidences in the fabric of social life. Oulipian constraint thus operates, to borrow Jacques Rancière’s expression, as a ‘redistribution of the sensible’ that opens up the possibility of new forms of life.

Abstract:
In this chapter, we model by Finite Element Method (FEM) the Lamb waves' propagation and their interactions with symmetric and asymmetric delamination in sandwich skin. Firstly, a theoretical model is established to obtain the equation of lamb modes propagation. Secondly, dispersion curves are plotted using Matlab program for the laminate [0]4. The simulations were then carried out using ABAQUS CAE by exciting the fundamental A0 Lamb mode in the frequency 300 kHz. The delamination was then estimated by analyzing the signal picked up at two sensors using two techniques: Two Dimensional Fast Fourier Transform (2D-FFT) to identify the propagating and converted modes, and Wavelet Transform (WT) to measure the arrival times. The results showed that the mode A0 is sensible to symmetric and asymmetric delamination. Besides, based on signal changes with the delamination edges, a localization method is proposed to estimate the position and the length of the delamination. In the last section, an experimental FEM verification is provided to validate the proposed method.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the Stoic notion of a body all the better to distinguish bodies from incorporeals. It looks first at the criterion for corporeality, according to which a body is either active or passive. The questions of touch and conjunction between active and passive bodies are examined, framing further questions about differentiation between individual bodies and their roles in a causal relation. A third element is shown to be necessary to regiment these roles: it is an incorporeal whose distinct relation to one and the other body in causation determines the role of each within the causal schema. Further distinctions between bodies, incorporeals and not-somethings, which are generic concepts borne in the mind, are established thanks to an analysis of the constructive, though critical, dialogue the Stoics have with Plato, in particular through their reading of the Gigantomachia or ‘Battle of the Giants’ in the Sophist. The Stoics reject the Platonic Forms but not the presence in reality of items which are not bodies. The Stoics rise to the challenge of making room within the sensible world for non-sensible items: these are the four incorporeals, time, void, space, and lekta. These are granted a parallel mode of being real, not inferior nor superior to that of bodies, and which all four satisfy equally.

Abstract:
Like other constructs studied by communication scientists, listening has been viewed as a predominantly deliberate process that requires considerable cognitive resources to perform well. Listening, contrasted with hearing as a more passive mode of information processing, requires a person to actively receive, process, and sensibly respond to aural information. The emphasis on deliberate processing might perhaps have been fueled by research in social psychology, from which much communication theory is drawn. That literature has emphasized rational, deliberate processing at the expense of a more intuitive mode that tends to be viewed as inferior in human decision making and grounded much more in emotions. Using a general dual-process framework, the authors argue that an intuitive, experiential system plays a much more important role in the listening process than previously recognized. They lay out their rationale and model for experiential listening and discuss ways in which people can improve their intuitive listening through mindfulness-based metacognitive practices.

Abstract:
A numerical solution of the melting problem of a semitransparent gray, medium contained in a closed heated spherical shell is presented in this study. The influence of all the fundamental energy transfer mechanisms on the melting dynamics of the phase change medium (PCM) has been analyzed, in order to extend the convectional natural convection-dominated model and to expand the limited literature in the thermal energy storage (TES) area at high operating temperatures (>800°C). A two-dimensional, axisymmetric, transient model has been solved numerically. The discrete ordinate method was used

Abstract:
In this paper, the effect is discussed of both pressure and temperature variations and their bearings on the SRA UHB safety factors. A variable peak distribution characterised by probabilities of distinct design and operating conditions is proposed and developed for performing OOS UHB. A routine has been developed recognizing that such a distribution is generally not available in the SRA software. Bearing in mind that friction is an important parameter in the UHB and OOS analysis but not duly considered in the literature to date, an integrated UHB model is introduced in the SRA to account for
