Simion, Samuela. Marco Polo, Il Devisement dou monde nella redazione veneziana V (cod. Hamilton 424 della Staatsbibliothek di Berlino). Edizioni Ca' Foscari, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.30687/978-88-6969-321-2.

Full text
Abstract:
The volume contains the commented edition of the Devisement dou monde based on the Berlin Staatsbibliothek - Preußischer Kulturbesitz Codex, Hamilton 424. The Hamilton 424 Codex, transcribed in Venice in the second half of the fifteenth century, contains the translation of a Latin model (whose features can be partially reconstructed virtually starting from some translation errors) and is the only known witness of V. Due to its characteristics, V represents a crucial point in the definition of the transmission dynamics of Polo’s book: its readings are confirmed, often in a broader form, by the Latin version known as Z. V strengthens the hypothesis that, after returning to Venice, Marco Polo modified the text written with Rustichello da Pisa in Genoa. Actually, version V represents the first step of this long process of rewriting, which probably occurred in several phases. This volume includes an introduction, the text edition, a textual commentary, as well as an index. A second and forthcoming volume will contain the linguistic analysis and glossary.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Providing a thorough legal analysis of money in all its aspects, this volume has been the leading text on the private and public law of money ever since the publication of the first edition in 1939. This new edition considers issues that have had a significant impact on monetary law, such as Brexit, virtual currencies, and the continuing shadow of ‘currency wars’. It also includes updated material on central banks and their role in currency and financial stability. The volume deals with the developments and legal challenges of digital money, providing a detailed evaluation of the status of Bitcoin as money. It investigates the challenges that virtual currencies like Bitcoin pose to our fundamental assumptions about monetary institutions and to our understanding and definition of money. In an EU context, the new edition reflects on the legal aspects of the Greek financial crisis, with an updated look at the role of the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank. It also includes analysis of the implications of Brexit, developments in damages and interest following on from the Sempra Metals case, the legal definition of a monetary union in Europe, and the conflict of anti-terrorist sanctions blocking financial resources.

Abstract:
The chapter deals with the legal aspect of the fundamental concept in all financial transactions — money. It explains why an understanding of the idea is essential to the development of financial transactions. It deals with the treatment of money in English law, both in statute and in case-law, and also examines the development and the concept of the European Single Currency and of virtual currencies. It concludes with a discussion of the basis on which states seek to control the use by others of their currencies.

Lawless, Robert E. How to Make Money in Any Real Estate Market. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400666841.

Full text
Abstract:
Virtually anyone can make money in a rapidly rising real estate market. As recent events have shown, it's just as easy to lose money when the economy heads south. But the better real estate investors generally know when to buy and when to sell. They know how to maintain control over their properties under adverse circumstances. They know how to work with lenders and how to find and evaluate the highest and best uses for a particular piece of property. These are the people who can make money (and not lose money) in all real estate markets-something real estate expert Robert Lawless shows exactly how to do in this book. Lawless details the primary investment strategies used by many successful real estate investors. Readers will learn how to make profitable investments in residential and smaller commercial buildings whether the market is headed up or down, and whether they invest in Greenwich, Connecticut, or Ames, Iowa. The information this book contains can save novice investors significant time and money, while also leading to greater investing profits.

Eisenberg, Melvin A. The Cover Principle. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199731404.003.0017.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 17 concerns cover. The concept of cover embraces two separate but intimately related ideas: First, cover is an act—a buyer’s act of purchasing a commodity in the market to replace a contracted-for commodity that the seller failed to deliver. Second, cover is a remedy—a judgment for the difference between the contract price and the cost of cover. As a remedy cover has the look and feel of damages because the buyer ends up with a money judgment. As an act, however, cover constitutes virtual specific performance: by covering the buyer finds a replacement performance that, together with cover damages, is close to what he would have received if the seller had been ordered to specifically perform.

Full text
Abstract:
The internet has emerged as an important medium for terrorists. Two key trends can be discerned from cyberterrorism: the democratization of communications driven by user generated content on the internet, and modern terrorists’ growing awareness of the internet’s potential for their purposes. The internet has become a favorite tool of the terrorists because of the many advantages it provides, such as easy access; little or no regulation, censorship, or other forms of government control; potentially huge audiences spread throughout the world; anonymity of communication; fast flow of information; interactivity; inexpensive development and maintenance of a Web presence; a multimedia environment; and the ability to influence coverage in the traditional mass media. These advantages make the network of computer-mediated communication ideal for terrorists-as-communicators. Terrorist groups of all sizes maintain their own websites to spread propaganda, raise funds and launder money, recruit and train members, communicate and conspire, plan and launch attacks. They also rely on e-mail, chatrooms, e-groups, forums, virtual message boards, and resources like YouTube, Facebook, and Google Earth. Fighting online terrorism raises the issue of countermeasures and their cost. The virtual war between terrorists and counterterrorism forces and agencies is certainly a vital, dynamic, and ferocious one. It is imperative that we become better informed about the uses to which terrorists put the internet and better able to monitor their activities. Second, we must defend our societies better against terrorism without undermining the very qualities and values that make our societies worth defending.

Full text
Abstract:
Contemporary Western societies seem to be marked by a revival of ethics: virtually every actor claims to be doing something ‘good’, or even to be willing to ‘change the world’. Social innovation, sharing economy and ethical business are just few of the tags attached to this manifold cultural trend, which is indicative of the attempt to reintegrate ethical responsibility with economic conduct. But how can entrepreneurship be redefined as the best way to express one’s will to change society? How can people decide to actualise their desire to change how things are by means of a business? Social Entrepreneurship and Neoliberalism: Making Money While Doing Good tackles these questions, offering a critical yet empathetic account of the lifeworld of young social entrepreneurs in London and Milan.

Brunsson, Nils. Responsibility as an Impediment to Influence—The Case of Budgeting. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199206285.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates that decision-makers may be more interested in the responsibility effects of their decisions than in the decision content, one reason being that there may be a connection between responsibility and influence: the assumption of responsibility can mean a loss of influence. An organizational management can increase its influence by avoiding decisions and the responsibility that goes with them. The chapter exemplifies this relationship by discussing a common type of decision process, namely budgeting. Budgeting is a common form of decision process in organizations. The budget is a decision on a grand scale: on one single occasion the organizational leadership makes decisions about virtually all operations over a future period, generally the coming year. The link between decisions and operations consists of money. However, the coupling between budget decisions and action is a very loose one.

Abstract:
Surveys the changing landscape of American higher education, from academic freedom to virtual universities, from campus crime to Pell Grants, from the Student Privacy Act to student diversity. In the years following World War II, college and university enrollment doubled, students revolted, faculty unionized, and community colleges evolved. Tuition and technology soared, as did the number of first-generation, minority, and women students. These changes radically transformed the American system of postsecondary education. Today, that system is in trouble. Its aging professoriate prepares for retirement, but low academic salaries can no longer attract the best minds to replace them. A flood of corporate dollars funds commercial research, but money for basic research—the seedbed of American scientific preeminence—has dried up. Colleges and universities also face heated competition with for-profit education providers for students, faculty, and external financial support, along with the costs of providing remedial education to growing numbers of students who are unprepared for postsecondary education.Higher Education in the United Statesprovides a comprehensive analysis of these issues and others that scholars and practitioners of higher education study, discuss, and grapple with on a daily basis.

Adams, R. J. C. Shadow of a Taxman. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192849625.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Shadow of a Taxman investigates how the unrecognized Irish Republic’s money was solicited, collected, transmitted, and safeguarded, as well as who the financial backers were and what might have influenced their decision to contribute. The Republic’s quest for funds took its emissaries as far afield as New York, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, and Melbourne, as well as to the Irish community in Britain and virtually every parish in Ireland. By selling ‘war bonds’ to supporters, it raised £370,165 from 140,000 people in Ireland and nearly $6m from 300,000 in the United States. These bonds promised a return to subscribers when British forces had left Ireland and an independent Irish Republic was internationally recognized. Exploiting newly uncovered documents, Shadow of a Taxman reveals the identities of these subscribers. Cross-referencing with census returns, intelligence reports, memoirs, and IRA membership rolls, it provides the first demographic analysis of non-combatant supporters of Irish independence on the eve of its realization. It also shows how access to funds shaped the course of the Irish War of Independence and, ultimately, Irish republicans’ negotiating position with the British government in 1921.

Reed, Christopher Robert. The Golden Decade of Black Business. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252036231.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines black business activities in Chicago in the 1920s. Robert S. Abbott, Jesse Binga, and Anthony Overton dominated the business activities of the Black Metropolis with their control over finance and information like no others in their community and very much like the business titans found throughout other major Chicago economic enclaves. Business was national king at this time and their collective presence provided a significant part of the foundation of making the Black Metropolis a reality. The economic influence of the 1920s built to such a crescendo that other interests and activities were virtually submerged to it as an epicenter. In fact, one internal memorandum of the NAACP concluded the following: “There are so many diversified interests in Chicago that the N.A.A.C.P. really suffers greatly from indifference on the part of the people.” These diversified interests were related to economics and the emergence of a consumers'society—working for extra money from which to increase spending and buying; spending for recreation and leisure rather than just for necessity; buying property, automobiles, and the new technological devices such as the refrigerator and record player; and investing in oil exploration, stocks, bonds, and real estate.

Kennard, Matt. The Racket. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350422742.

Full text
Abstract:
While working for the Financial Times, investigative journalist Matt Kennard had unbridled access to the crème de la crème of the global elite. From slanging matches with Henry Kissinger to afternoon coffees with the man who captured Che Guevara, Kennard spent four years gathering extraordinarily honest testimony from the horse's mouth on how the global economic system works away from the convenient myths. It left him with only one conclusion: the world as we know it is run by an exclusive class of American racketeers who operate with virtually unlimited weapons and money, and a reach much too close to home. Owing to the very nature of the Financial Times, however, Kennard was not able to publish these findings as part of his day job. Enter The Racket, now in a fully updated second edition. This tell-all book, reported from all corners of the world, will transform everything you thought you knew about how the world works—and in whose interests. Kennard reports not only from across the United States, but from the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. In doing so he provides startlingly clear and concrete evidence of unchecked, high-level, interrelated systems of exploitation all over the world. At the same time, through encounters with high-profile opponents of the racket such as Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, and Gael García Bernal, Kennard offers a glimpse of a developing resistance, which needs to win.

Bentley, Peter J. Digitized. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199693795.001.0001.

Abstract:
There's a hidden science that affects every part of your life, a science so powerful that you would be hard-pressed to find a single human being on the planet unaffected by its achievements. It is the science behind computers, the machines which drive the supply and creation of power, food, medicine, money, communication, entertainment, and most goods our stores. It has transformed societies with the Internet, the digitization of information, mobile phone networks, and GPS technologies. Written in friendly and approachable language, Digitized provides a window onto the mysterious field from which all computer technology originates, making the theory and practice of computation understandable to the general reader. This popular science book explains how and why computers were invented, how they work, and what will happen in the future. Written by a leading computer scientist, Peter J. Bentley, it tells this fascinating story using the voices of pioneers and leading experts interviewed for the book, in effect throwing open the doors of the most cutting-edge computer laboratories. Bentley explores how this young discipline grew from the early work by pioneers such as Turing, through its growth spurts in the Internet, its difficult adolescent stage where the promises of AI were never achieved and dot-com bubble burst, to its current stage as a semi-mature field, capable of remarkable achievements. Packed with real-world examples, Digitized is the only book to explain the origins and key advances in all areas of computing: theory, hardware, software, Internet, user interfaces, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. If you have an interest in computers--whether you work with them, use them for fun, or are being taught about them in school--this book will provide an entertaining introduction to the science that's changing the world.
