AbstractThis study comparatively investigates the impacts of fiscal and monetary policies on poverty in Nigeria from 1986 to 2018. Using the Ordinary Least Square and Standardized or Beta Coefficient approach, we found that the Nigerian political system plays a vital role on a large number of its citizens living in extreme poverty. Other factors identified as the likely causes of poverty are insurgencies, terrorism, and low productivity among others. Also, monetary policy is more important in alleviating poverty than the fiscal policy which favored the monetary school arguments. Specifically,

The theoretical and methodological approaches to measuring poverty are based on several basic concepts: the concept of basic needs, the concept of multidimensional absolute deprivation, the concept of multidimensional relative deprivation, the concept of poverty in terms of capabilities. In the Russian Federation, the monetary concept of poverty is generally accepted for poverty measurement and assessment. However, the definition of poverty within the monetary concept seems to be insufficient to identify the poor. The article provides some arguments for the necessity to move from the existing

The multidimensional approach has been based on the fuzzy sets theory in which the conventional poor/non-poor dichotomy is replaced by assessment of the degree of household poverty threat. Using data from the China Household Income Project for the years 2002, 2007, and 2013, it appears that although monetary poverty in both groups is low, migrants have higher levels of non-monetary deprivation for various levels of poverty thresholds. Our purpose is to investigate in depth why these adjustment programs have not delivered the expected results. In Colombia, 50% of labor income is lower than the legal MW level. It is in this context that we analyze the effect of increasing MW on labor income distribution and its inequality, household income distribution and its inequality, and on monetary poverty prevalence. Specifically, we study the unconditional quantiles to establish whether there are differential effects for low quantiles, for those closer to MW, and for higher quantiles. We perform this analysis for different occupational groups. We also assess the effects of MW relative to median on labor income inequality, measured by its Gini

While poverty is generally measured using a monetary basis, it is widely acknowledged that poverty is characterized by multiple dimensions beyond income poverty. This blog post compares the various multidimensional measures of poverty and finds that some of the gains in poverty eradication in the previous decades are likely lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other adverse shocks to the global economy. While access to the latest poverty data remains a challenge, evidence shows that Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia host the largest number of poor people. Rural and children’s poverty levels a
