Abstract:
Należała do Towarzystwa Żydowskich Studentów filozofii UJK.

Abstract:
So-called partisans. Monika Stec in an interview with Krystyna Badurka Referring to the story of her father’s death in 1945, Krystyna Badurka-Rytel discusses the times before and after World War II. Before WWII, her father, Felix Badurka, was a soldier of the Home Army, while after the war he served as the chairman of the National Council and built "the new system". For decades, the Badurka family has been trying to find out who is responsible for his murder. The story of tracking perpetrators is presented against a broader background: the attitude of the population and the Church towards the underground army during and after WWII; the socio-political changes (specifically in rural areas) after World War II, as well as the modern times, in particular the attitude to the past. Krystyna Badurka-Rytel objects to the current Polish political history, because, as she believes, it glorifies the war crimes committed by the so-called “conspiracy” by honouring the participants with books and monuments.

Abstract:This article introduces, reproduces, and contextualizes two letters written in 1938 from Edinburgh by Hastings Kamuzu Banda to Samuel C. Banda (Chief Mwase of Kasungu) and Ernest C. Matako. At the time Banda was studying in Edinburgh. The letters, from a period when sources on Banda are scarce, illuminate his political and educational thinking and his personal life and attitudes at the time. The article also discusses the archival context of the letters, which were found in the papers of Godfrey Wilson, the Director of the Rhodes-Livingstone Institute from 1938 to 1941. The copies were found in the course of research into the lives of the anthropologists Monica Wilson, née Hunter, and Godfrey Wilson.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Monika Maron's prose fiction has attracted considerable critical interest not only in Germany but also in academic circles in Europe and the UK and in the USA. The overwhelming majority ofthe secondary literature is in German and considers Maron's oeuvre predominantly in the categories ofGDR-and feminist writing. My thesis acknowledges these readings but proposes that a more comprehensive view of this author's work may be achieved by adding a humanistic reading ofthe central Maronian figure as a representative ofthe 20th century postwar generation, a reading which is broadly based on a Lacanian psychoanalytical framework and is presented in English. The sense ofpersonal dislocation and alienation expressed repeatedly in Maron's fiction is examined in five thematic areas: the notion ofa central lack in the Maronian figure's life; a quest for selfhood in a postmodern context; explorations of the surreal; love and death; and memory and memoir. The focus ofmy analysis is a composite 'Maronian Protagonist' such as has been proposed to some extent by Antje Dollmann and Elke Gilson, among others; this protagonist develops in age and varies in preoccupations from the debut novel Flugasche (1981) through to the last one included in this study, Endmoriinen (2002), but she remains essentially the same person, one based closely on Maron's own personality and biography. My thesis shows that the existential malaise exhibited by this character is influenced by, but essentially independent of, external factors and that this widespread phenomenon exemplifies the unassuageable desire described by Lacan, desire whose existence is defined by a deeply rooted sense of loss and lack.

Liu, Yu-Chun. "Image restoration : an examination of denial strategy in media coverage during the first three months of the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal." Virtual Press, 2006. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1347731.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes President William Jefferson Clinton's self-defense during the first four months of 1998. The study focuses on Clinton's denial of the sex scandal with White House intern Monica Lewinsky when the story broke out in the Washington Post on January 21, 1998. William L. Benoit's theory of Image Restoration is used to examine each strategy's distribution. Benoit's framework consists of identifying strategies used by denial to clarify and repair a positive image despite negative public accusations. The study employed a content analysis as the research methodology. There were a total of 1,392 sentences contained in twenty-four articles from the Washington Post, only articlesfrom the Post were included in the initial search. Research was conducted using microfilm of the Washington Post full-text articles during the time period of interest: January 21, 1998 to April 20, 1998. The dependent variables were the number of sentences devoted to the amount of the Washington Post coverage given to the strategies utilized by Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Clinton's staff, Clinton' s lawyer, Clinton's friends, the media, Al Gore, and the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, the sentences were coded on the basis of image restoration theory and strategy categories defined by Benoit. The data showed the strategy of denial was employed at the highest rate among all strategies during the three selected time periods. Specifically, the denial strategy was used the most frequently with 348 quotations (25%). In the short run, Clinton's popularity among followers was not damaged, but in the long run, he faced impeachment proceedings. Therefore, the strategy of denial is not always a clarification action. This study indicates that the strategy of denial merely complicates and prolongs the whole process; therefore twisting Benoit's original definition.

Abstract:
Mongolia’s response to religion – specifically to Buddhism – was quite different to Moscow’s hardline push towards atheism and tended to emphasize personal choice of religion while seeking to remove financial and social power from monasteries and senior monks. Much of the literature focuses on the hypocrisy of monks, showing how they used their elevated social position to elicit sexual favors, among other things (as in D. Natsagdorj’s ‘The Venerable Monk’s Tears’ [Lambuguain nulims]). The anti-government uprising in the center-west of the country in the spring of 1932 and the resulting implementation of the moderate New Turn Policy (Shine ergeltiin bodlodo) became the theme of several short stories, including two (‘Balchinnyam the Urianhai’ [Urianhai Balchinnyam] and ‘A Heroic Struggle’ [Baatarlag Temtsel]) written in 1936 by Sh. Sodnomdorj, who himself had fought in the Red Army against the uprising.

Abstract:
Alongside universal education, one of the main concerns of the Party was that Westernized health care be made available throughout the country. Along with further limiting the power of the monasteries, the implementation of this policy theoretically brought Mongolia’s herding population the benefits of modern scientific medical knowledge. D. Natsagdorj in particular was well-aware of the problems of syphilis following his time in Weimar Germany, and he sought to educate his readers through the brief journalistic and satirical accounts he composed during the early 1930s. Other writers, such as D. Namdag (‘Life and the Cost of Living’ [Ami ba amidralyn üne], 1936), sought to emphasize the efficacy of modern medicine against the traditional Tibetan medicine practiced by monks and, influenced by his reading of Zola, to give an account of the physical hardships experienced by those at the edge of Mongolian society.

Abstract:
This chapter talks about how the Buddhism of mainland Southeast Asia, the Theravada form of that religion, which is predominant everywhere in the region but Vietnam, interacted in significant ways with Japan's strategy in the Second World War. Most Japanese themselves were nominally Buddhists, though of the Mahayana school (like most Vietnamese). They appealed to sentiments of religious fraternity as part of their crusade to “liberate” the region from European colonialism and replace it with their own colonial system: a Greater East Asian “co-prosperity sphere” dedicated primarily to benefiting Japan. The chapter shows how Thailand had quickly yielded to the superior strength of the Japanese forces and entered into a strategic alliance.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 uses Yen Pei’s life and career as a window into the larger and more complex dynamics of migration and transregional Buddhist circulations in the South China Sea during the second half of the twentieth century. The chapter draws on the case of Yen Pei to reveal that, first, migrant monks were significant actors in connecting the Buddhist communities in China and Southeast Asia, and second, Singapore’s so-called reformist Buddhist movement can be better understood by contextualizing it within the broader history of South China Sea Buddhism in the twentieth century. The first half of this chapter discusses Yen Pei’s decade-long career in Taiwan between 1952 and 1964 and his three missionary trips to Southeast Asia in 1958, 1961, and 1964. The second half of the chapter focuses on his religious career in Singapore from 1964 to his death in 1996.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a 1931 survey of Buddhist institutional life in Outer and Inner Mongolia and in Buryatia. It is a ground-level view by a Buddhist author writing from within the increasingly embattled monastic worlds of socialist Mongolia, soon to be erased by state purges. Like a few other chapters in this volume, it is drawn from the writings of the Khalkha polymath of the revolutionary era, Zava Damdin Luvsandamdin (1867–1937). This survey is embedded in his famous 1931 history of the Dharma in Mongol lands, The Golden Book (Tib. Gser kyi deb ther), the last history of such scope and purpose by a Khalkha monk prior to the devastating socialist state violence of the late 1930s. The survey comes after synthetic presentations of the early, middle, and later spread of the Dharma into Mongol lands, the latter tied inextricably to the Géluk school and the Qing formation that had collapsed in 1911/1912. The survey translated here is a final statement about the translocalism that defined Buddhism in early twentieth-century Mongolia, where most major monasteries were woven at once into local political and social landscapes while also consciously mediating trans-Eurasian ritual, intellectual, and material culture traditions.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to offer an overview of those resurgences of the baroque that are most significant for my study – Germany’s rediscovery of the Trauerspiel and allegory, the colourful legacy of the Italian commedia dell ‘arte and the monist philosophy of Baruch Spinoza that informs Ernst Haeckel’s evolutionary science at the turn of the century. Anglo-American modernism’s debt to the baroque has already been discussed in some detail in the context of English metaphysical poetry, and this interest stemmed from T. S. Eliot’s essay ‘The Metaphysical Poets’ (1921). The essay is a review of Herbert J. C. Grierson’s anthology Metaphysical Lyrics and Poems of the Seventeenth Century: Donne to Butler (1921), and between them the two works were responsible for a reappraisal of the poetry of John Donne, George Herbert, Andrew Marvell, Richard Crashaw, Henry Vaughan and Abraham Cowley during the 1920’s and 1930s.

Abstract:
In 1901, within a year of his ordination and appearance on the public stage, the Irish Buddhist monk U Dhammaloka initiated conflict around an issue that would become central to Burmese nationalism in subsequent years. Europeans wearing shoes on Buddhist pagodas was both a sign of disrespect from a Burmese point of view, and fundamental to preserving racial hierarchies from a colonial point of view. Dhammaloka’s successful thematizing of the issue gave rise to a very public conflict with the authorities, and helped to make him a celebrity monk. The chapter examines how the conflict developed, explores the colonial and racial politics of footwear, and notes its wider impact.

Abstract:
The focus of this chapter is the human body as it is represented and interpreted in baroque writing and performance. In his 1677 treatise Ethics the philosopher Baruch Spinoza contradicts Cartesian dualism, claiming that matter and spirit are united by one fundamental universal substrate. Between the late 1800s and 1914 the German scientist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel popularised many of Spinoza’s ideas for a modern readership, and Haeckel’s comprehensive exposition of pantheism and monist beliefs underpinned his own aesthetic sense of nature and her forms. My work on the Trauerspiel in earlier chapters suggests a particular preoccupation with the realm of matter, the significance of the human body and soul and a defining relationship between subject and object. Duncan’s theories of dance allow me to further explore these themes and to strengthen my argument by using a completely different combination of modernist art-form and baroque source. My focus will be Spinoza’s definitions of body, spirit, ‘motion-and-rest’, ‘conatus’ and form, and the ways in which the Isadora Duncan assimilated these monist theories in her writing and choreography. Whilst developing arguments from previous chapters, this section reveals a very different kind of gesture and physicality when compared with those of baroque tableau and Schrei performance.
