In addition, some also spread disease that can cause immense loss in agriculture industry. Therefore, building a system that can detect rice planthoppers so that we can properly spray pesticide to minimize the damage is an important topic. In this thesis, we develop a rice pest monitoring and forewarning system that can locate and count the number of pests. In the first phase, we use traditional image processing tech

Abstract:
The diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) is a major pest of crucifer crops worldwide. It is a particularly important problem in Southeast Asia where climatic conditions favor a short generation time and rapid proliferation. In countries such as Thailand, the diamondback moth has apparently become resistant to all classes of insecticides, even the newest ones. The first part of this thesis is the development of a computer database of all the available information on diamondback moth toxicology. About 1,550 records were extracted from more than 235 published or unpublished documents. These

The trial plots were sited within established commercial avocado orchards with trees of similar cultivar (‘Hass’), soil-type and age, located in Levubu, Limpopo, South Africa. Abstract:
Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) causes yield and quality losses in potato. PLRV is identified by plant symptoms and serological tests such as an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A similar serological test, direct tissue blotting assay (DTBA), was used to detect and monitor PLRV movement in field-inoculated Russet Burbank plants and plant tissues from Russet Burbank and Russet Norkotah seed tubers submitted by growers for winter certification tests. DTBA was as accurate as ELISA and easier to use for detecting tuber-perpetuated PLRV in stems and petioles of plants grown from grower-submi

Abstract:
Soybean rust (SBR), caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd., is a real threat to soybean crops in South Africa. Its ability to spread rapidly and its potential to severely reduce yields have earned it the reputation as the most destructive foliar disease of soybeans. SBR has been reported in South Africa every year since its arrival in 2001. While extensive research had been done on the epidemiology and fungicide application requirements in South Africa, no work into the long term climatic vulnerability of soybean production areas to SBR had been done. This meant soybean producers do n

Abstract:
The use of pheromone-based or semiochemical lures and devices for the detection of insect pest population and monitoring in agriculture is a common practice. In many countries the use of these devices is exempt from registration requirements based on regulatory thresholds set by the relevant authorities, however, not in South Africa. The question arises whether the pheromones or semiochemicals dispensed through such devices, influence the naturally occurring compounds observed and whether a concern of toxicity and ecotoxicity is justified. A tomato field was selected in a commercial gro
