Full textThe purpose of this master thesis was to study computer vision algorithms for vehicle detection in monochrome images captured by mono camera. The work has mainly been focused on detecting rear-view cars in daylight conditions. Previous work in the literature have been revised and algorithms based on edges, shadows and motion as vehicle cues have been modified, implemented and evaluated. This work presents a combination of a multiscale edge based detection and a shadow based detection as the most promising algorithm, with a positive detection rate of 96.4% on vehicles at a distance of between 5 m to 30 m. For the algorithm to work in a complete system for vehicle detection, future work should be focused on developing a vehicle classifier to reject false detections.

Full textThis thesis questions the relations between photography and monochrome. If photography is considered to have taken part in a redefinition of art in the nineteenth and twentieth century, most notably «releasing» it from the necessity to produce images, the pictorial monochrome can hence be considered as one of the outcomes of this «liberation». But what about the possibility of a photographic monochrome? Photography having completely upset «realisms», the idea and framing of a specifically photographic monochrome seems rather problematic…If these two plastic practices have long seemed antagonistic, the challenge will be to evaluate their proximities and try to think about some fundamental questions such as: what is a photographic monochrome? What are its necessities and challenges?A first part chronologically displays a hitherto unpublished corpus and in-depth analysis of pieces going from 1929 to 2015, that are presumably photographic monochromes. A second part focusses on explaining the plastic and theoretical problems common to these photographic monochromes, particularly around a critical redefinition of what an image is—through its manufacturing process, its relations to reality, to language and abstraction etc. In this approach, three avenues of reflection are put to the test, developed theoretically, historically and plastically: the first approaches the artwork as invention of a color, the second deals with the literality of the image and the third with a photograph that would be already made. This research leads to the creation of pieces related to these three speculative approaches

Full textThe radical monochrome was for many years considered the ultimate reduction of pictorial possibility, the final stage of the art of painting. And yet, since the beginning of the century, gallery and museum walls have exhibited an increasing number of such works. This thesis sets out to show how monochrome painting, though constantly threatened by cliché, has become a genre in its own right. The first part describes the efforts made by Yves klein to present himself as the inventor of a genre he knew he had not created. It analyses the works he rejected in order to consolidate his own inaugural position, and also looks at monochromes by his contemporaries. The second part follows the destiny of the genre after klein's tour de force had captured public attention. The noteworthy success of the monochrome since the seventies has in turn stimulated research into its pre-twentieth century forerunners. Their work is discussed in the third part. Given the prevailling artistic dogma of representation, the monochromes of Alphonse Allais, like those of his predecessors and followers, were invariably presented as paradoxical and comic works of mimesis. Having analysed its history, it becomes clear that monochrome. .

Full textChance has allowed me to make beautiful discoveries. The particular beauty of the electric cables and their plastic potential have thus illuminated my artistic career. I made the choice of cable as raw material of my work since 1999. A traditional technique, that of Crochet, in connection with contemporary tapestry emphasizes the idea of connectivity and the weaving of social links by a single continuous thread, an unbroken thread. But I seek a transgression of this practice in favor of a broader understanding of what it represents. By the gestural repetition that allowed me to lead to a form of ritualization of my technique, I go through a phase of consciousness where the perception becomes more acute. My practice has become a form of existence, improvement, and relief to come to the realization of a magical effect, which delivers the body spiritually. It is also a form of connectivity, of exchange with several artists of which I made the collection carefully and which enlarged my universe, then by the serial work, monochrome (black) and an epistemological analysis, I suggest a " miscegenation" of certain disciplines in my work, a form of hybridization between a cosmological universe, mathematical and physical are interlaced. My body becomes a drawing thread in the external space, my interiority by performative and expressive videos. I am experiencing an adjacency that actually comes from the continuity of the thread. This internal and fusional space, where I experience my body in relation to the continuous thread, often takes on an imaginary dimension, to which is added an external space, that of representation and distancing in the physical world of my work

Full textBefore becoming the master of monochrome, Yves Klein, a self-taught artist, undertook a career in judo in 1947. His enthusiasm leads him to Japan. There, he perfects his technique, and after one and half years, acquires the 4th Dan degree, making Klein the youngest judoka in Europe to receive such a title. The switch toward painting occurs at the end of 1954, when Klein simultaneously publishes two manuals: « The Fundamentals of Judo » and a collection of his own artwork entitled « Yves Paintings ». From that date the two disciplines live closely side by side, nourishing each other - until 1960, when Yves Klein takes a flying leap into the void, and abandons judo altogether. Challenging the Rosicrucian hypothesis, this research attempts to show the central role of judo in Klein's work, through a historiography reconstructing the importance of martial discipline in his cultural education. The research involves the use of formerly unpublished written archives which testify to its integration into the heart of the painter's artistic reflexion. As a founding member of the school of New Realism, Yves Klein establishes a sense of modernity in his pictorial approach in a delicate re-appropriation of his anthropological and phenomenological experience of the real world, explored through the practice of Katas, pan ethics and aesthetics of judo, in order to develop a new world of expression, the art of performance. By embracing judo as a discipline of both body and mind, Klein is offered the keys to his future artistic freedom, giving him a glimpse, through free falls and throws, of the creative possibilities of vacuum space. Thus, judo becomes the support of material imagination. In addition, Klein's degree of expertise in martial arts justifies the economy of means and of the speed of execution of his works, as he applies one of the fundamental principles of judo, that of the best use of energy. The martial experience, therefore, constitutes a formidable laboratory of form and of conflict, by communicating to the painter the technical means for his conquest of space through a science of gestures and a code of action, contributing to abolish the boundaries between art and life, signalling the origin of his myth
Fuchs, Cornelius. "Increasing the light extraction efficiency of monochrome organic light-emitting diodes." Doctoral thesis, Saechsische Landesbibliothek- Staats- und Universitaetsbibliothek Dresden, 2015. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:14-qucosa-186848.
Full textOrganic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are an attractive new light source for display and lighting applications. In general, the light extraction from OLEDs is limited due to the high refractive index of the active emitter material and the thin film geometry. The high refractive index causes the trapping of a significant portion of the emitted light due to total internal reflection (TIR). Due to the thin film layout, the light emission is enhanced for resonant modes of the coherent optical microcavity, in particular for light affected by TIR. In this work two approaches are investigated in detail in order to increase the light extraction efficiency of OLEDs. In a first approach, the implementation of a low refractive index material next to the opaque metallic back-reflector is discussed. This modifies the dispersion relation of the non-radiative surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode at the metal / dielectric interface, causing a shift of the SPPs dispersion relation. Thereby, the phase space into which power can be efficiently dissipated by the emitter is reduced. For the SPP this power would have been lost to the cavity, such that in total the outcoupling efficiency is increased. In experiment, an increased external quantum efficiency (EQE) is observed for an emitter exhibiting isotropic orientation of the sources (Ir(ppy)3 ,+19 %), as well as for an emitter which shows preferential horizontal orientation (Ir(ppy)2 (acac), +18 %), compared to an optimized device which uses standard material. This corresponds very well to the enhancement of the outcoupling efficiencies of the corresponding microcavities (+23 %, resp. +19 %) reducing the refractive index of the hole transport layer by 15 %. Optical simulations indicate that the approach is generally applicable to a wide range of device architectures. These in particular include OLEDs with emitters showing a perfectly horizontal alignment of their transition dipole moments. Furthermore, the approach is suitable for white OLEDs. Bragg scattering was investigated as second option to increase the light extraction from OLEDs. The method requires a periodically structured surface. For the bottom-emitting OLEDs, this is achieved by a direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) of the transparent electrode. Additionally, top-emitting devices were fabricated onto periodically corrugated photoresist layers. Using a periodic line pattern with a lattice constant of 0.71 μm, the EQE of the bottom-emitting devices was enhanced by 27 % compared to an optimized planar reference. For the bottom-emitting layout, increasing the lattice constant leads to lower EQEs. The increased EQE is attributed to the superposition of the radiative cavity resonances by Bragg scattered intensities of trapped modes. The intensities depend on the lattice constants as well as the height of the periodic surface perturbation. For top-emitting OLEDs comprising a lattice constant of 1.0 μm the EQE was increased by 13 %. Reducing the lattice constant (0.6 μm) decreases the EQE, albeit the luminous efficacy is increased by 13.5 % due to a heavily perturbed emission spectrum. The perturbation is attributed to a coherent interaction of the Bragg scattered modes due to the strong optical microcavity for the top-emitting OLEDs. Thus, for strong perturbation specific emission patterns can be achieved, but an overall enhanced efficiency is difficult to obtain. To investigate the observed results theoretically, a detailed simulation approach is outlined. The simulation method is carefully evaluated using reference data from literature. Using the simulation approach, the emission patterns as well as the efficiencies of the devices can be estimated. The emission spectra reproduced from simulation are in good agreement with the experiment. Furthermore, for the bottom-emitting layout, a strong interaction can be found from simulations for lattice constants below 0.5 μm. For top-emitting OLEDs, the weak interaction regime seems to be more likely to result in an overall enhanced emission. This requires, in contrast to conventional opinion, very shallow perturbations or lattice constants which exceed the peak wavelength of the emission spectrum. However, with the established simulation approach a-priori propositions on the emission spectrum or particular beneficial device layouts become feasible

Full textThe present work reports the development of high luminance organic light emitting diodes(OLEDs) device stacks for microdisplay applications. The devices are based on siliconcomplementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) backplane. In the present treatise effortsare particularly focused on reducing the luminance decay and the voltage drift during deviceoperation. In the first part of this study, high brightness and low operating voltage green OLEDs arereported. The top emitting device stack comprises of fluorescent green emitter accompanied bycharge blocking layers and doped charge transport layers. The effect of different devicestructures, configurations and organic materials on the initial and lifetime performance of thedevice is presented. In the second part of the study, device development of hybrid OLED stacks for high luminancefull color microdisplays is reported. The hybrid devices comprise of a solution processed andphotocrosslinkable hole transport layer (X-HTL) and an evaporated white OLED stack. Thismethod allows direct primary color generation with relatively high efficiency and offers ease ofcolor tunability by controlling the thickness of the X-HTL

Full textAnish Kapoor asserts the spiritual quality of his work. By spiritual he means not the religious or the sacred but the possibility to be reunited with a « Totality », in a « proto-cultural » manner, by eschewing the material. Is this project a return to “primitivism in art” in line with Paul Gauguin and Barnett Newman? Is it influenced by the Indian heritage of Kapoor or is it based, as he claims, on the hypostatic function of colour, which gives way to a quasi alchemical experience? How is this spiritual potentiality of the work perceived by a Western audience, ignorant of Kapoor’s various spiritual endeavours? Does the work convey through its shape and colour the markers of the spiritual? This dissertation analyses the various influences that nourish Kapoor and inform his works. It then attempts to decipher the mechanisms through which those makers are efficient in conveying a sense of “spirituality” to the works within the settings of the White cube Gallery or the museum of modern art. They appear to be phenomenological, neurological and psychological

Two basic inverse halftoning methods together with some post- processing schemes are proposed in this thesis. In order to optimize the inverse operation of halftoning, we first take the inverse modeling concepts to find the least-squares solutions of this problem. And then, the knowledge of image characteristics can help us in designing improved algorithms that produce the most promising pictures to our eyes. They are conceptually very different from the traditional inverse half- toning methods that use simple low-pass filters. Furthermore, we develop a general space-varying sliding-window filter (SV- SWF) scheme. The goal is to handle various types of pictures using the same basic inverse halftoning structure together with adaptive parameters. This universal inverse halftoning operator is achieved by using an adequate classification scheme to separate image data into different groups, each corresponding to a set of pre-trained parameters. It is proven through detailed analysis on the performance of the proposed algorithms that these algorithms produce better reconstructed images than the other known algorithms in both PSNR and subjective evaluation.

In many cases, image recognition can be exploited to provide convenience in daily life. In the field of image recognition, eye mouse system, iris recognition system, driver fatigue detection, etc. are being developed intensely. Among those techniques and the associated systems, eyes detection is the key. If the systems can not locate the eyes accurately, their functions would be seriously degraded. Therefore, it is worthwhile to make a study of eyes detection. In this thesis, the object of the detection is a man who uses a computer, and the instruments for capturing the images are two cameras located above the screen. Because the cameras can not be placed parallel to each other perfectly, we obtain the parameters by camera calibration before detecting the object. And then we use the parameters to rectify the epipolar lines of the images and compute disparity space image(DSI), which indicates the depths of objects in a scenery, from the rectified left and right images. In order to get the best ground truth disparity map, we filter DSI through Gaussian filter. In obtained ground truth disparity map, the shallowest and biggest region is the face region because the face is closest to the cameras. According to eye mask and the scale of eyes and face, we find the possible center of the eyes from the recognized face region. Finally, the exact position of the eyes can be detected by deformable template. Experimental results show that the method we propose is robust in complicated background and it is not affected by wearing skin color cloth, the features of neck, and skin-color of human race.

This creation study is based on my memory trace in graduation school and expands to explore “home”. Through observing the nice memory of my life experience, the image of “home” is created. It displays with realistically detailed technique, which hopefully constructs self-thoughts on the past. There are two key points to the discussion of this study. One is to analyze my memory of home from the aspect of documents, which realizes inner feelings. The other is to discuss the monochrome was ink form used by this creation study. Blue was used for monochrome creation. It also analyzes monochrome creations of each artist as the auxiliary reference. The thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one, introduction, depicts the creation motives, objectives and research method range of this study, which builds up the basis of thesis creation. Chapter two, documents discussion and analysis of related artists, discuss the characteristics of memory. It discusses the feelings of home image through the aspect of psychology and then understands the importance of memory to the individual. It analyzes the related creations that other artists displayed in memory as the reference of individual creation. Chapter three, ideas and practice of creation, analyzes the process of self-creation and describes the process of creation ideas and practice of monochrome ink wash display. Chapter, analysis of creations, introduces the overall works of the creation, including the two series of “memory for space” and “soliloquy” and analyzes the creation contents and display forms of individual works. Chapter five, conclusion, reflects the shortage of the creations. It is hoped to add other mediums into future creations and build up more unique personal phrases for my ink painting creations.

The Chinese ceramic’s culture is broad and profound, also amazing. Traditional monochrome glaze only provide with single colors, which are classify by black, white, yellow, red, blue, blue or purple. It is show that , the ceramics have beauty color with different types. Although the ceramic with less decoration, but the unique in beauty of simplicity become a significant ceramic art system. Celadon is a kind of monochromatic glaze porcelain, which also the earliest glaze in history. There have a lot of admiration about celadon, such as Lu Yu's "Tea Sutra",which written in Tang dynasty, was described celadon as jade. Also the poet who names Lu Guimeng describe celadon just like the color of thousand peaks. Ruyao, one of the most famous kiln in the song dynasty. the glaze color is azure and without complicated ornamentation, also only has simple type and color to demonstrate the beauty of the artifacts. The emperor huizong of the song dynasty used "the color as the sky after rain and breaking through the clouds" to describe the beauty of Ruyao. The five kilns of the song dynasty, their porcelain usually make by monochromatic glaze, except “Junyao”. There had a great progress of monochromatic glaze in dynasty of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing; especially Ming and Qing dynasty, not only create new color of glaze, but also improve the technology. It can be seen that the monochromatic glaze porcelain is be fond by people and also importance in Chinese ceramics. Since I studied the ceramic arts, I have been particularly fond of monochromatic glazes. Because the elegant and graceful of the whole characteristics, such as the shining star in the dark or a graceful lady, how quiet but remarkable. Therefore, the author believes that if this charming color can become one of the glaze of tea sets, then it may bring out a pleasant feeling for the tea-ware nowadays . In addition to all of the above, this creative research’s will focus on ceramic ware with monochrome glaze to perform the beauty of simplicity. Wish to enjoy the encounter between tea and ceramics during the period of moment.
