Abstract:
This research was aimed to describe English Monolingual Dictionary Application, time to consult it, reasons to consult, and the advantages of consulting it in evaluating student’s English writing. The method of this study used descriptive qualitative and two kinds of instruments, namely interview, and documentation. There were three teachers being interviewed. This research resulted that they consulted Oxford Advance Learner’s Dictionary (OALD) 9th edition and Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE) 6th edition available on their own mobile phones. The teachers agreed that they must have consulted their English Monolingual Dictionary Application every time they found unfamiliar words during teaching academic writing especially during evaluating student’s writing. They consulted their English Monolingual Dictionary Application in view of some factors; namely, to confirm meaning, to check spelling, to check the examples of sentences, to check word classes, meaning, and to know whether the words used were grammatically applied well or not and to find synonym for paraphrase After analyzing the finding, the researcher gives some suggestions to the writing teachers, the English teacher, and reader. For the English writing teachers, they are expected to be able to consult English Monolingual Dictionary Application because this research showed that English Monolingual Dictionary Application provided so much help to support teaching in the class especially when evaluating student’s writing product.

This study investigates dictionary look-up strategies (DLS) while performing a reading task by 10 Saudi EFL English major students. Think-aloud protocol was used as an instrument in this study. The results revealed that the subjects used 31 DLS while reading. Reading L1 equivalents and reading L2 definitions were found to be the most frequent strategies that Saudi students use when referring to their dictionaries. The results also demonstrated that the students use the guessing strategy infrequently and prefer to resort to the dictionary immediately. The data also illustrated that the monolingual dictionary yielded different overall success rates. The users of the monolingual dictionary referred to their dictionary to solve 32 words problems (12.5% of all look-ups).

This article provides an introduction to elexiko, the first German hypertext dictionary to be compiled on a corpus basis, which is currently being developed at the Institut für Deutsche Sprache Mannheim (IDS). First, a brief account of the design is given, followed by a demonstration of the methods and tools that are being employed to compile it. elexiko will provide not only an improved quantity of lexical information, but also a new quality of information which will be explained and illustrated at different levels of the microstructure of the dictionary. The description of word meaning and use in elexiko will be presented in detail, with a particular focus on the treatment of collocations, ambiguity, vagueness, and the presentation of senses. The development of a theoretically grounded procedure for lexicographic disambiguation is also described. This is then followed by a brief account of the treatment of grammatical details. Finally, issues of usability, the progress of the project and its future perspectives will be considered.

AbstractOnce a new word or a new meaning is added to a monolingual dictionary, the lexicographer is to provide a definition of this item. This paper focuses on the methodological challenges in writing such definitions. After a short discussion of the central terminology (method and definition), the article describes factors which inform this process: linguistic theories, linguistic and lexicographical methods, and types of definitions. Using the example of elexiko, a dictionary project of the Institute for the German language (IDS) in Mannheim, Germany, the paper finally showcases the compilation of definitions in a monolingual online dictionary of contemporary German.

Abstract:
Most existing methods for automatic bilingual dictionary induction rely on prior alignments between the source and target languages, such as parallel corpora or seed dictionaries. For many language pairs, such supervised alignments are not readily available. We propose an unsupervised approach for learning a bilingual dictionary for a pair of languages given their independently-learned monolingual word embeddings. The proposed method exploits local and global structures in monolingual vector spaces to align them such that similar words are mapped to each other. We show empirically that the performance of bilingual correspondents that are learned using our proposed unsupervised method is comparable to that of using supervised bilingual correspondents from a seed dictionary.

Abstract:
Dissertation (DLitt)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The dictionaries available in the Gabonese languages are all translation dictionaries biased towards French and compiled by missionaries and colonial administrators. No proper monolingual dictionaries exist in the Gabonese languages. There is therefore a need for monolingual dictionaries in the Gabonese languages, particularly in Yipunu, one of the Bantu languages (B 43) spoken in the South of Gabon. Yipunu is a regional vehicular language or a major or majority language. Yipunu is a domestic language i.e spoken inside Bapunu communities or a mother tongue or first language and Yipunu is also taught as subject in the national educational system. As a response to this need, this dissertation proposes metalexicographic criteria for the compilation of a standard descriptive monolingual dictionary with special reference to Yipunu. The proposed model focuses primarily on the inclusion and the treatment of the standard variety of Yipunu and to a lesser degree on the other varieties. Such a model is directed at a dictionary primarily dealing with the needs of the average, educated members of the Yipunu speech community, the mother-tongue speakers, and also designed for experienced and advanced learners of Yipunu and their teachers. This study aims to point out how important standard descriptive monolingual dictionaries are in general and specifically in the case of African Bantu languages. This study also aims to highlight the importance for Gabonese lexicographers to adopt modern lexicographical principles in dictionary compilation such as the user-driven dictionary and the corpus-based dictionary. This model, although devised for Yipunu, will eventually serve as model for the design of standard descriptive dictionaries in all Gabonese languages. This study provides information about the content and the structures of such a dictionary and is structured as follows: Chapter 1 focuses on introducing and contextualising the research. It presents the linguistic situation in Gabon with reference to the status of Yipunu. It also shows the importance and the relevance of the research and gives the theoretical basis, methodology, hypotheses and objectives underlying the study. Chapter 2 criticises the lexicographic works in Yipunu in order to improve the quality of future Yipunu dictionaries and examines the major needs of Yipunu lexicography. Chapter 3 envisages some aspects of the standardisation of Yipunu. It targets the discussion at the level of the language analysis namely the phonology, the grammar, the dictionary and the orthography of Yipunu. Chapter 4 discusses the user perspective, which guides the dictionary compilation. It focuses on the user profile, user typologies and dictionary functions. The intended dictionary has a multifunctional character. Special attention is given to a pioneering survey of dictionary use among Gabonese students and to the discussion of the teaching of dictionary use in Gabon. Chapter 5 deals with the dictionary plan. Different aspects such as the style guide, the genuine purpose, the dictionary basis, data collection, the data collection policy, data collection methods and the corpus of the proposed dictionary are discussed Chapter 6 elaborates on the macrostructure of the proposed dictionary. The dictionary gives priority to a strict alphabetical macrostructure. Macrostructural elements, lemmatisation strategies, and types of lemmas and articles to be included in the proposed dictionary are discussed. Chapter 7 focuses on the microstructure of the proposed dictionary. The model suggests an obligatory microstructure and an extended obligatory microstructure and discusses the variety of data to be included in the articles of the proposed dictionary. Chapter 8 deals with the outer text section and the guide structures of the proposed dictionary, which includes front and back matter texts. Polyaccessibility, a system of cross-referencing, and lemmatic and non-lemmatic addressings are characteristics of the proposed dictionary. Chapter 9 makes some concluding remarks by highlighting the focus point of each chapter of the dissertation. It gives also some recommendations for the research.
Jipoenoe is 'n streeksvoertaal of 'n hoof- of meerderheidstaal.

Abstract:
This research aims to study the status - place and treatment - of scientific and technical terms in general dictionaries. General dictionaries concentrate on words (or general language lexicon) whereas specialised dictionaries focus on terms (or specialised language lexicon). However, general dictionaries include, in addition to words, a large number of terms. These terms, which are simultaneously included in both dictionaries types, are the subject of this study. Thus, it proposes to examine the following aspects of the term: macrostructural - choice and location - and mircostructual - labelling, definition and exemplification as well as the term’s equivalent in the Arabic bilingual dictionaries. The terms which are used in this research are from various domains. They are extracted from a trilingual English-French-Arabic corpus which consists of texts published by the UN. The status of these terms is analysed according to two monolingual french dictionaries, two monolingual arabic dictionaries and two bilingual french-arabic dictionaries

Abstract:
In the macrostructure of general monolingual dictionaries, hitherto subentries have been dealt with in an asystematic and poor fashion with regard to the entries. This point of departure has led us to the demonstration of this asystematic nature in six modern dictionaries from six different Romance languages and to formulate useful proposals to make better and more comprehensive general dictionaries, particularly in Catalan language. The thesis consists of two volumes and a CD-ROM containing the whole text, as well as the four unprinted annexes of the corpus’ extraction grids. Volume I establishes the initial hypotheses, and provides a detailed review of the characteristics of the general monolingual dictionary and of the dictionary article; it studies the concept of subentry, both from the theoretical point of view and from that of the practical use that lexicographers make of it; it addresses the selection, layout, graphic representation, linguistic information and the illustration of the use of subentries, and describes, sets and classifies the units which are subentries: phraseological units. Volume II describes the study corpus and the methodology used; it presents the quantitative and qualitative analyses of data and the discussion of results; it formulates proposals for improvement in the treatment of subentries, and closes with some general conclusions that answer the initial hypotheses. Finally, there is the bibliography, the annexes of the most important data and a detailed general index of the whole work.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A. (African Languages)) -- University of Limpopo, 2011
This study evaluates the comparative analysis of cross-referencing in Northern Sotho monolingual dictionary and Northern Sotho-English bilingual dictionaries. The study argues that Northern Sotho-English Lexicographers do not treat cross-referencing in accordance with the lexicographic theories and principles. Since in this study cross-referencing is treated with regard to synonyms and antonyms only, the study has discovered that there are many problems in relation to the application of cross-referencing in these dictionaries. This enables dictionary users to follow it with ease, because if theories are not adhered to, then the motive for using dictionaries becomes null and void. The other thing is that lexicographers mix the translation equivalents of partial synonyms and complete synonyms, that is, partial synonyms are paired with complete synonyms, thus leading to orthorgraphic errors. Moreover, the study discovered that some emerging lexicographers are attempting to apply cross-referencing in their dictionaries, something which is a very good attempt. Therefore, the study recommends that major theories and principles of lexicography should be indicated in the front matter of the dictionaries. This will be to make sure that lexicographers themselves know about those theories, as that will make their dictionaries very useful to their readers.

Abstract:
The master's thesis Theoretical Problems of Spanish Lexicography introduces issues associated with creating general monolingual dictionaries. The thesis has two main objectives. Firstly, it aims to summarise the most frequent lexicographic issues and attempt to find their suitable solutions in practice through an analysis of significant research studies dealing with this subject. The issues have been divided into two groups depending on whether they regard the macrostructure (collection of dictionary entries) or microstructure (collection of headword information). As for the macrostructure, one of the main issues is posed by determining the criteria for the selection of dictionary entries. Modern descriptive lexicography considers lexical unit usage frequency to be the main criterion. The macrostructure of general monolingual dictionaries should generally not include proper nouns while productive affixes and affixoids, phraseological units with a high degree of idiomaticity, abbreviations and frequently used neologisms should be included. The thesis also explores the issue of distinguishing between cases of homonymy and polysemy and its impact on lexicographic practice. The chapter on microstructure focuses primarily on the issues of constructing lexicographic definitions with user...

Learners always use dictionaries during the learning and acquisition process of a language, in particular of a foreign language. However, we do not know exactly what kind of information lead a learner to use a dictionary or what is useful in the bilingual dictionary while they consult it. The objective of our research is to check the needs of Ivory Coast learners of Portuguese language, concerning the use of a bilingual dictionary in their learning process, the frequency of its use, the kind of dictionary used and their satisfaction level towards that pedagogical material, as well as the circumstance they consult a bilingual dictionary. Unlike lexicographic studies that were carried out in the same area, learners here are in a multilinguistic context and we want to see if that linguistic context will have a great influence on their use of the dictionary or not. Therefore, the success in the use of dictionaries may depend on several factors such as the learner’s language level and previous habits. In order to ascertain these behaviors, a survey was carried out specifying the preferences of Portuguese learners from Ivory Coast regarding dictionary use to obtain empirical data. The study involved two groups of learners: one group made up of pupils and another one of students attending higher education. The data we collected showed that learners, despite the wide range of information available in a bilingual dictionary, consult it to look for and acquire the meaning of words and expressions in Portuguese, learn pronunciation, phrases or expressions construction in Portuguese and also consult words spelling either in Portuguese or French. Looking at the learners’ habits, it’s clear that they are more concerned with the Portuguese-French section than the French-Portuguese part in a bilingual dictionary.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the importance of the development of lexical competence within the various glottodidactic methods. In particular, it is highlighted how, at present, teaching vocabulary has definitively freed itself from a subordinate, almost accessory, position with respect to grammar teaching. The article then focuses on the role of the dictionary in learning vocabulary and on the necessary skills for its use. It is highlighted the lack, in Italian L2, of pedagogical dictionaries, i.e. simplified monolingual dictionaries specifically designed for a non-Italian speaking public. The article ends with the description of the most important corpora of Italian language, which could became useful operational tools in teaching vocabulary.

Abstract:
Tibetan is a low-resource language. In order to alleviate the shortage of parallel corpus between Tibetan and Chinese, this paper uses two monolingual corpora and a small number of seed dictionaries to learn the semi-supervised method with seed dictionaries and self-supervised adversarial training method through the similarity calculation of word clusters in different embedded spaces and puts forward an improved self-supervised adversarial learning method of Tibetan and Chinese monolingual data alignment only. The experimental results are as follows. First, the experimental results of Tibetan syllables Chinese characters are not good, which reflects the weak semantic correlation between Tibetan syllables and Chinese characters; second, the seed dictionary of semi-supervised method made before 10 predicted word accuracy of 66.5 (Tibetan - Chinese) and 74.8 (Chinese - Tibetan) results, to improve the self-supervision methods in both language directions have reached 53.5 accuracy.
