Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the health and medicinal importance of bush tea (Athrixia phylicoides DC) and special tea (Monsonia burkeana Planch. ex Harv), two of Southern African indigenous herbal teas. Design/methodology/approach The two herbal teas, A. phylicoides and M. burkeana were extracted individually and in combined ratios for analysis. The phenolic content was determined and the different phenolic compounds were identified using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The anti-diabetic activity of the teas was determi

Abstract:
Seedling production under smallholder farming systems can be negatively affected by both abiotic and biotic factors. Seedling damping-off caused by Rhizoctonia solani is one of the major biotic factors which causes significant yield reduction. Management is mainly based on the application of synthetic fungicides and cultural practices. However, both methods have limitations which result in their inefficiency. Several studies have reported on the use of plant extracts and biological control to manage plant diseases. The aim of this study was to formulate an effective and practical approach to m

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Sc. (Plant protection )) --University of Limpopo, 2011<br>Monsonia burkeana is widely used as a decoction for plant protection in South Africa. However, the accumulative capabilities (ACs) for essential nutrient elements and phenolic-antioxidant relationship in its organs are not documented. A study was conducted to determine whether: (1) the ACs for nutrient elements in fruit, leaf, stem and root of M. Burkeana were similar, (2) total phenolic and antioxidant contents in fruit, leaf, stem and root of M. burkeana were distributed equally, and (3) phenolic levels have an effect on acc
