Abstract:
Falls and recurrent falls cause great health and social consequences in older people. However, these problems are poorly understood in Vietnam. A cross-sectional study was performed at seven hospitals in Thai Binh province, Vietnam, to investigate the individual and environmental factors associated with recurrent falls among elderly patients hospitalized due to fall injuries in Vietnam. A history of recurrent falls within the last 12 months, sociodemographic, health, and clinical characteristics, as well as environmental conditions, were obtained via self-reported interviews. Multivariate logistic and Poisson regression models were used to identify associated factors. Overall, the mean fall episodes in the last 12 months were 1.8 (Standard deviation—SD = 1.2) episodes, and the 12-month prevalence of recurrent falls was 40.5%. The individual risk factors included not receiving fall prevention guidelines, walking with devices, loss of sensation in hand or foot, and using pain relief medications. The environmental risk factors comprised having too-high stairs and not having dry, clean, and nonslippery bathrooms. This study highlights a significantly high 12-month prevalence of recurrent falls in older patients hospitalized after falls in Vietnam. Moreover, regular assessments of functional disabilities and hazardous environmental conditions, as well as the provision of prevention programs, have potential to prevent falls and recurrent falls.

Abstract:
<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Falls are currently the top safety problem in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in China. Due to the increasing number of residents living in LTCFs, more evidence is needed to give a foundation for fall prevention. <b><i>Objective:</i></b> This study aimed to explore the epidemiological characteristics of falls in LTCFs in central Shanghai. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> The study was conducted in 21 LTCFs in a central district in Shanghai, with a capacity of 3,065 residents. A two-stage sampling method was applied in participant recruitment. Falls were recorded by LTCF staff over a 12-month period. Details of falls were obtained by face-to-face interviews. The χ<sup>2</sup> test was used in data analyses. <b><i>Results:</i></b> The incidence of falls was 13.5%; 64.0% falls resulted in injuries, with 32.0% involving fractures. Women had a significantly higher incidence of injurious falls than men (χ<sup>2</sup> = 4.066, <i>p</i> = 0.044). Residents aged 80–89 years or in level 1 care had the highest incidence of falls with severe consequences. The incidence of falls was significantly higher at small- or medium-sized LTCFs, public LTCFs, and LTCFs with higher environmental risk levels compared to their counterparts. Most falls occurred when walking on a flat floor (28.9%) and rising up or sitting down (24.0%); 40.9% occurred during the night. Of those injured, 54.8% were treated in hospitals, and only 53.7% completely recovered. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> Though the average incidence of falls in LTCFs in Shanghai was relatively low, great variation was observed between LTCFs, and severe consequences occurred frequently. Fall prevention programmes should be evidence-based with applicable devices and individualized care services and supports. The roles of personal and institutional factors on falls warrant further study.

Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is a cool-season grass, which behaves as an annual in the Great Plains region of western Canada and is used as a grazing crop. Italian ryegrass requires vernalization for reproductive development to occur. Late fall (dormant) seedings, which have been used for annual crop species, have often resulted in earlier developing seedlings in the spring and higher yield than spring seedings. For Italian ryegrass, dormant seedings may result in vernalization of early-spring-germinating seedlings, allowing seed production without having to overwinter established plants. The objective of this study was to compare the seed yield and stand establishment of late fall (dormant) and spring seedings of Italian ryegrass at three locations in the Great Plains region of western Canada. Stand establishment was assessed by measuring tiller density in the month of June, and these densities were greater for spring than late fall seedings. Most spring seedings had no reproductive development and, thus, no seed yield; however, most late fall seedings produced seed the following year, indicating that vernalization of early-developing seedlings did occur. There were significant differences in seed yield among the four cultivars tested and among sites. Based on the high variation in seed yield among cultivars and sites and the relatively low yield levels obtained, late fall seedings of Italian ryegrass cannot be recommended in the Great Plains region of western Canada.

AbstractThe predictability on the seasonal time scale of meteorological drought onsets and terminations over the southern Great Plains is examined within the North American Multimodel Ensemble. The drought onsets and terminations were those identified based on soil moisture transitions in land data assimilation systems and shown to be driven by precipitation anomalies. Sea surface temperature (SST) forcing explains about a quarter of variance of seasonal mean precipitation in the region. However, at lead times of a season, forecast SSTs only explain about 10% of seasonal mean precipitation variance. For the three identified drought onsets, fall 2010 is confidently predicted and spring 2012 is predicted with some skill, and fall 2005 was not predicted at all. None of the drought terminations were predicted on the seasonal time scale. Predictability of drought onset arises from La Niña–like conditions, but there is no indication that El Niño conditions lead to drought terminations in the southern Great Plains. Spring 2012 and fall 2000 are further examined. The limited predictability of onset in spring 2012 arises from cool tropical Pacific SSTs, but internal atmospheric variability played a very important role. Drought termination in fall 2000 was predicted at the 1-month time scale but not at the seasonal time scale, likely because of failure to predict warm SST anomalies directly east of subtropical Asia. The work suggests that improved SST prediction offers some potential for improved prediction of both drought onsets and terminations in the southern Great Plains, but that many onsets and terminations will not be predictable even a season in advance.

Eared Grebes (Podiceps nigricollis Brehm, 1831) use saline ecosystems throughout much of their life cycle, and greater than 90% of the North American population stage during fall at two hypersaline lakes. At one of these lakes, Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah, a commercial harvest of brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana Kellogg, 1906) cysts occurs during fall and may impact Eared Grebe populations. We used photo surveys on the other hypersaline lake, Mono Lake, California, and on the GSL, as well as aerial counts on the GSL, to describe population fluctuations of Eared Grebes staging on these lakes. The long-term (1997–2012) Eared Grebe population was 1.4 million on the GSL and 1.0 million on Mono Lake. Populations changed on GSL and Mono Lake in synchrony, indicating population regulation is likely occurring at wintering, not staging, areas and is influenced by El Niño effects. Location of Eared Grebes on the GSL was influenced by brine shrimp densities and did not overlap with concentrations of commercial harvest boats. Spatial segregation of commercial harvesters and Eared Grebes reduces negative impacts of anthropogenic disturbance on Eared Grebes. Knowledge of population changes within and among staging areas will help managers monitor long-term abundances and reduce negative impacts between Eared Grebes and commercial harvesters.

The weight of snow on roofs can damage conventional wooden houses. It is of great importance, therefore, to monitor and control roof snow loads. A model system has been developed for controlling snow on roofs. A precipitation detector capable of differentiating between solid and liquid precipitation and a water gauge for detecting the meltwater from a roof are combined to estimate the roof snow load. When the calculated load exceeds a critical value, an electric heater on the roof is energized to melt a portion of the snow. The whole system is controlled by a personal computer. The system was tested for about a month in 1990 with satisfactory results.

American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) production sites are often flooded for pest control and crop harvest. However, little is known about how this practice affects vines. A survey was conducted in Massachusetts over a 3-year period to determine the effect of spring, fall, and winter floods on total nonstructural carbohydrate concentration (TNSC) of cranberry uprights of four cultivars. With a few exceptions, TNSC generally was unaffected or increased during the course of the 1-month “late water” flood held from mid-April to mid-May. The 48-hour “flash” flood, held in mid- to late May, generally had little effect on vine TNSC. Fall “harvest” floods, which ranged in duration from 3 to 27 days, often resulted in a decrease in TNSC, with greater decreases in TNSC occurring in early fall floods compared to late fall floods. Decreases in TNSC during the harvest flood were as great as 42%. “Winter” floods had little effect on TNSC. Path coefficient analysis indicated that flood duration, date of application, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen concentration all impacted vine TNSC during the flood, while floodwater depth had little effect. Water clarity (i.e., light penetration to the vines during the flood) also appeared to have little impact. Due to the frequent observation of TNSC decline during fall flooding, it is possible that yield potential of cranberry vines is reduced by current flooding practices.

Abstract The goal of this study was to determine the year round movement patterns of American horseshoe crabs, Limulus polyphemus, in the Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire (USA) by using acoustic telemetry to track the movements of 37 adult Limulus, for periods ranging from 2 to 31 months. During the winter (December-March) horseshoe crabs moved very little. In the spring, when water temperatures exceeded 11oC, horseshoe crabs moved at least 1 km further up into the estuary to shallower subtidal areas about a month prior to spawning. The mean distance traveled during spring migrations was 2.6 ± 0.5 (n=20) km up the estuary. Mating occurred in May and June and during these months animals spent most of their time in shallow subtidal areas adjacent to mating beaches. In the summer (July-August), animals moved 1.5 ± 0.5 (n=26) km down the estuary, towards the ocean, and ranged widely, using extensive portions of the estuary. In the fall (September-November) movement was more limited (0.5 ± 0.5 km; n = 24) while animals settled into wintering locations, where they remained until spring. The mean annual linear range for all animals was 4.5 ± 0.3 km (n =35) and the maximum distance traveled by an individual horseshoe crab within one year was 9.2 km. There was no evidence that any of the horseshoe crabs tracked during this study left the estuary.

Grey, blue and green infrastructure supports socio-ecological processes the city undergoes. Yet, procedures of constructing anthropogenic habitats often undermine the value of natural landscape elements such as urban streams. Thessaloniki’s backbone comprises of urban streams that run from the suburban forest of ‘Seih-Sou’ to the Thermaikos Gulf acting as corridors of the natural urban matrix. Policies of the past have dealt with urban streams through extensive engineering drainage methods, eliminating the risk of flooding, yet resulting in rapid stormwater runoff, water quality problems, disturbed riparian ecosystems, leading to the urban stream syndrome. Furthermore, they have failed to address urban streams as an inseparable part of the landscape and thus to incorporate them in people’s mental map and everyday activities. The paper discusses the case of ‘Polygnotou stream’ which forms the beginning of the large scale engineered peripheral moat of Thessaloniki, constructed in the 60’s, and playing the role of the water recipient for six urban streams in total. It falls unknown to the majority of people living in the area, yet its services as an ecosystem ought to be acknowledged, helping inform decision makers of its socio-ecologic, perceptual and economic value. In addition, Polygnotou stream, adjacent streams and the peripheral moat overall, could be considered as a touristic product of great importance.

The Persian War was one of the most significant events in ancient history. It halted Persia’s westward expansion, inspired the Golden Age of Greece, and propelled Athens to the heights of power. From the end of the war almost to the end of antiquity, the Greeks and later the Romans recalled the battles and heroes of this war with unabated zeal. The resulting monuments and narratives have long been used to elucidate the history of the war itself, but they have only recently begun to be used to explore how the conflict was remembered over time. In the present study, Yates demonstrates (1) that the Greeks recalled the Persian War as members of their respective poleis, not collectively as Greeks, (2) that the resulting differences were extensive and fiercely contested, and (3) that a mutually accepted recollection of the war did not emerge until Philip of Macedonia and Alexander the Great shattered the conceptual domination of the polis at the battle of Chaeronea. These conclusions suggest that any cohesion in the classical tradition of the Persian War implied by the surviving historical accounts (most notably Herodotus) or postulated by moderns is illusory. The focus of the book falls on the classical period, but it also includes a brief discussion of the hellenistic commemoration of the war that follows those trends set in motion by Philip and Alexander.

AbstractThe Colombian Pacific region is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world, but several anthropic pressures threaten its ecosystems and the ethnic groups who live there. Since the colonial era, the region has experienced two different key strategies of landscape appropriation: (1) diversification of activities in the landscape; and (2) specialisation focusing on a few landscape products. These two strategies fall at opposite ends of a modified continuum over time, including a range of intermediate situations that combine elements of the diversified and specialised strategies. The first strategy is characteristic of Afro-descendant communities, based on harmony with nature and favoring human well-being, while providing multiple ecosystem services and cultural or spiritual values.In this context, this chapter reviews the relationship of Afro-descendants with their environment in the Colombian Pacific region, taking as an example the San Marcos locality. Through interviews with key informants and participant observation, we investigate the productive and extractive practices in San Marcos. Results show that the appropriation strategy combines different sources of income. This denotes a great local ecological knowledge geared to maintenance of biodiversity. Despite Law 70 (1993) stipulating Afro-descendant communities to have guaranteed autonomy and the right to collectively manage their ancestral lands, this socio-ecological production landscape is endangered due to pressures from the dominant society towards conversion to a specialised strategy. Finally, we also analyse “transformative change” in the context of governance of San Marcos. Such change could guide a profound transformation in conservation strategies based on a fundamental reorientation of human values.

Falls remain the leading cause of intentional and unintentional injuries worldwide. On average, 80% of the cases are said to originate from low and middle developing countries. The raising concerns are that a great number of children and elderlies above the age of 65 are the most affected. Falls are one of the most serious health risks especially for older adults and children in Namibia. The implications of falls on public health practice are that approximately half of older adults do not discuss their fall incidents with healthcare providers. The aim of this chapter is, therefore, to define the concept falls focusing in the Namibian context and outlining the causes, highlighting the most vulnerable groups, and identifying the preventive measures.

Rightly or wrongly, everything challenging on a whitewater river in North America gets compared to the booming rapid that culminates, in space, time, and difficulty, a river trip through the Grand Canyon. Say “Lava” to anyone who has tasted whitewater, and the association to Lava Falls Rapid is automatic. A friend who guides trips on some of Alaska’s wildest rivers bristles when she hears the name Lava North applied to the most sphincter-tightening, life-or-death rapid on the mighty Alsek River. “It shows how Grand Canyon–centric the rafting world is,” she says. Advocates for other rivers say much the same. Still, Lava is king, and the Colorado River, for which Lava is a mere riffle in its eons of canyon carving, is the most mythic of river kingdoms. If you have a weakness for wild rivers, eventually you float the Colorado, and eventually you make your way to the Grand Canyon and to Lava. The drop at Lava Falls is thirteen feet almost immediately, followed by fourteen more in a few hundred yards. At most water levels, Lava earns a difficulty rating of ten, on a scale of ten. It confronts you at mile 179 on the 226-mile voyage from Lees Ferry to Diamond Creek, an incomparable outdoor adventure. The trip has the shape of a well-crafted novel. It establishes its themes in the red-rock stillness of Marble Canyon. It tests its characters in the churning whitewater of the Inner Gorge. Then Lava comes exactly where a novelist would place the climax, about four-fifths of the way through the saga. All the way down the river, you have had Lava in the back of your mind. Everything that precedes it feels like lead-up. Everything that follows is coda, resolution, release, perhaps recovery. The crux of the tale, the defining moment, resides in the hurricane waters of Lava Falls. By the time our small flotilla got there, we’d courted disaster at Crystal, dodged the rock horns of Horn Creek Rapid, ridden the roller coaster of Granite, and thrashed and crashed our way through scores of other rapids.

Both the fall of Troy and the Sea Peoples have been the subject of a vast literature. They were part of a common series of developments that affected the entire eastern Mediterranean and possibly the western Mediterranean too. Troy had been transformed at the end of the eighteenth century BC with the building of the most magnificent of the cities to stand on the hill of Hisarlık: Troy VI , which lasted, with many minor reconstructions, into the thirteenth century BC . The citadel walls were nine metres thick, or more; there were great gates and a massive watchtower, a memory of which may have survived to inspire Homer; there were big houses on two floors, with courtyards. The citadel was the home of an elite that lived in some style, though without the lavish accoutrements of their contemporaries in Mycenae, Pylos or Knossos. Archaeological investigation of the plain beneath which then gave directly on to the seashore suggests the existence of a lower town about seven times the size of the citadel, or around 170,000 square metres, roughly the size of the Hyksos capital at Avaris. One source of wealth was horses, whose bones begin to appear at this stage; Homer’s Trojans were famous ‘horse-tamers’, hippodamoi, and even if he chose this word to fit his metre, it matches the archaeological evidence with some precision. In an age when great empires were investing in chariots, and sending hundreds of them to perdition at the battle of Kadesh (or, according to the Bible, in the depths of the Red Sea), horse-tamers were certainly in demand. Opinion divided early on the identity of the Trojans. Claiming descent from Troy, the ancient Romans knew for sure that they were not just a branch of the Greek people. Homer, though, made them speak Greek. The best chance of an answer comes from their pottery. The pottery of Troy is not just Trojan; it belongs to a wider culture that spread across parts of Anatolia.

The relationship between Rome and the Mediterranean was already changing significantly before the fall of Carthage and of Corinth. This relationship took two forms. There was the political relationship: it was clear before the Third Punic War that the Roman sphere of influence extended to Spain in the west and to Rhodes in the east, even when the Roman Senate did not exercise direct dominion over the coasts and islands. Then there was the commercial relationship that was creating increasingly close bonds between Rome’s merchants and the corners of the Mediterranean. Yet the Senate and the merchants were distinct groups of people. Like Homer’s heroes, Roman aristocrats liked to claim that they did not sully their hands in trade, which they associated with craft, peculation and dishonesty. How could a merchant make a profit without lies, deception and bribes? Rich merchants were successful gamblers; their fortune depended on taking risks and enjoying luck. This condescending attitude did not prevent Romans as eminent as the Elder Cato and Cicero from commercial dealings, but naturally these were effected through agents, most of whom were Romans in a new sense. As it gained control of Italy, Rome offered allied status to the citizens of many of the towns that fell under its rule, and also established its own colonies of army veterans. ‘Romanness’ was thus increasingly detached from the experience of living in Rome and, besides, only part of the population of the city counted as Roman citizens, with the right to vote, a right denied to women and to slaves. There may have been about 200,000 slaves in Rome around 1 BC , about one-fifth of the total population. Their experience forms an important part of the ethnic history of the Mediterranean. Captives from Carthage and Corinth might be set to work in the fields, having to endure a harsh existence far from home, ignorant of the fate of their spouses and children. Iberian captives were put to work in the silver mines of southern Spain, in unspeakable conditions.

The Mediterranean coasts might be expected to serve as the natural limit to imperial expansion by the great powers of the Middle East – the Hittites, Assyria, even Pharaonic Egypt. The Assyrians did occasionally try to browbeat Cyprus into submission, as did the Egyptians, for its resources in timber and metal were too precious to ignore. But no attempt to gain mastery over the eastern Mediterranean matched the Persian conquests in Anatolia and the Levant during the sixth century BC, and the Persian attempt to invade Greece; the defeat of Persia would be celebrated as the greatest Greek victory since the fall of Troy. The achievement was not just military but political, since a great many cities in Greece proper and the Aegean islands collaborated in the struggle against the Persians, and even Syracuse was asked to help (though it fought off a threat from Carthage, possibly instigated by Persia). The Greeks commemorated their triumph by erecting victory monuments such as the bronze serpent from Delphi, now in the Hippodrome at Istanbul; there, they inscribed the names of thirty-one cities that had helped resist the Persians at the great battle of Plataia in 479 BC, and even that list was not complete. A ‘Congress of the Hellenes’ came into existence, and the name of Hellene, originally assigned by Homer to the followers of Achilles, was increasingly understood to refer to a common identity expressed through language, the cult of the gods and style of life. The story that emerged, most resoundingly in the spirited account of these events by Herodotos, was that of the defence of Greek liberty against Persian tyranny. In his play The Persians, performed in Athens in 472, Aeschylus assumed that the future of Hellas directly depended on the fate of his home city: . . . The trunks of these two trees were ten to twelve inches in diameter, so they were really mature trees. Under and around these apple trees we usually had planted potatoes (our best crop!), corn, and huge beefsteak tomatoes. A slice from a beefsteak tomato warmed by the sun and just picked would cover a whole slab of bread. What fabulous sandwiches these made with mayonnaise. Makes me hungry to think about it. It was always such fun to visit our garden with Mother, as she would get very enthusiastic about our crops. Most fun was to dig potatoes. I might be at the shovel, and Mother with a bucket was collecting the potatoes, which were invariably healthy and robust. We would both get on our knees and feel around for the potatoes. Mother would get excited and ooh and ah about their size, their ruddiness, and their abundance. “Oh, Estella. Look at THAT one! Put your hands through that loose soil and make sure we did not leave any potatoes behind! Those little potatoes are hiding,” she would say, or words to that effect. Boiling these little potatoes up for supper was a special treat, as they were so tasty with butter when lightly cooked. Our corn occasionally bore enough cobs to give us a meal. We usually had good luck with onions, too. To weed this garden we had a one-wheeled cultivator with a hoe or blade attached behind the wheel, which was about one foot in diameter. The wooden handles formed a V sprouting from the axis of the wheel. With two hands one would push this wheeled implement between the rows of crops, and it would turn over the weeds, so one could keep the space between the rows pretty weed-free without too much work.

The elevation of Great Salt Lake (GSL) has a great impact on the people of Utah. The flood of GSL in 1982 has caused a loss of millions of dollars. Therefore, it is very important to predict the GSL levels as precisely as possible. This paper points out the reason why conventional methods failed to describe adequately the rise and fall of the GSL levels — the long-range dependence (LRD) property. The LRD of GSL elevation time series is characterized by some most commonly used Hurst parameter estimation methods in this paper. Then, according to the revealed LRD, the autoregressive fractional integrated moving average (ARFIMA) model is applied to analyze the data and predict the future levels. We have shown that the prediction results has a better performance compared to the conventional ARMA models.

Femur bone is the longest and largest bone in the human skeleton. This bone connects the pelvic bone to the knee and carries most of the body weight. The static behavior of femur bone has been a center of investigation for many years while little attention has been given to its dynamic and vibrational behavior, which is of great importance in sports activities, car crashes and elderly falls. Investigation of natural frequencies and mode shapes of bone structures are important to understand the dynamic and vibrating behaviors. Vibrational analysis of femoral bones is presented using finite element method. In the analysis, the bone was modeled with isotropic and orthotropic mechanical properties. The effect of surrounding bone muscles has also been accounted for as a viscoelastic medium embedding the femur bone. Natural frequencies extracted considering the effects of age aggravated by weakening the elastic modulus and density loss. The effects of real complex bone geometry on natural frequencies are studied and are compared with a simple circular cross-sectional model.

The Great Sahara desert covers the entire range of Libyan longitude 11° 44′ to 23° 58′ E and a latitude range of 24° 17′ through to 30° 31′N, thus covering an area of 1,750,000 sq km and 88% of this land is desert. The authors have measured hourly solar radiation at Kufra oasis (24° 17′N, 23° 15′E) within the Libyan Desert and found it to be a most reliable and consistent energy resource — the rain fall averages a few mm every 30 years. With no cloud cover throughout the year, the measured noon clearness-index often exceeding 0.84 and availability of large volumes of potable water from underground aquifers, large-scale electrical generation warrants a serious feasibility study. This article presents the technical feasibility for Cylindrical Parabolic Concentrator (CPC) thermal energy conversion.

In the fall of 2001 we implemented a new controller design project in our Junior/Senior level controls class in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. The old project, which involved the identification and control of a “black box”, failed to challenge and motivate students. Our new project is the design of a controller for the point-to-point motion of a gantry crane system. Student teams modeled the gantry crane and developed a controller to meet several performance specifications. The designs were implemented in Simulink with MATLAB’s Real-Time Workshop. A competition served to further motivate the students. In the end we were very impressed with the great effort the students gave and the quality of their designs. Each group presented their design and most students stayed and asked questions for several hours.

Fibrous filter is one of the most common filters due to its simplicity in structure and low cost in manufacturing. In this paper, filters with rectangular fibers are studied numerically, in which the filter is simulated as a staggered array of parallel rectangular fibers placed transverse to the flow. Two-dimensional flow field is obtained by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with the finite volume method Particle trajectories are then calculated by solving the corresponding Lagrangian equation of motion to obtain the collection efficiency of filters. The simulation considers particle capture mechanisms of interception and inertial impaction. The effects of fiber aspect ratio, filter packing density, particulate size on the collection efficiency of a rectangular fiber are also numerically determined.

Railroad environments are generally considered to be among the most dynamic workplace environments, even with constant improvement efforts by the railroad industry. While there has been great progress in equipment safety, personnel safety is a significantly harder challenge. These challenges are primarily derived from the presence of heavy moving machinery in close proximity to personnel and the difficulty of designing reliable wearable protection devices. Additionally, variable weather conditions, challenging walking conditions (ballast, trip hazards, etc.), and difficulty to focus on environment, moving objects, and on tasks at hand place the employees in constant peril. Therefore, our survey is focused on exploring solutions for protecting employees through unified system modeling and design that makes the employee integral to the process and results in personal protective devices that work with the environment and the employee, not against them. The optimal system design integrates not only protection of the employees from falls, unsafe practices, or collisions, but also aids in resource planning, safe operation and accounting of “near-miss” situations. In recent years the railroads have made significant investments in process automation and monitoring solutions such as Wireless Sensor Networks. These technologies are becoming increasingly cloud-connected and autonomous. They provide a plethora of information about equipment positions, movement, railcar lading, and many other factors, all of which are highly useful in the design and implementation of a railyard worker protection system. They allow us to predict position and movement, and can thus be used to provide effective proximity detection and alerting in some railyard regions where these systems are installed. Additionally, we discuss several technologies addressing near-collision, fall, and proximity situations through RF and non-RF-based techniques. The railroad industry has been advancing efforts leveraging these technologies to improve the safety of their workers. However, there are also many challenges that remain largely unaddressed. For example, in railroads, a detailed and exhaustive causation analysis for worker incidents has yet to be conducted. Therefore, in an environment like a railyard there is no solution to detect or prevent Employee on Duty (EOD) fall, collision, or health issues such as dehydration, psychological issues and high blood pressure. Protective devices worn by workers is believed to be one of the most important, cost-effective, and scalable potential candidate solutions. Recent advances are making wearable wireless body area networks (WBAN) and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that are distributed and large-scale a reality. Such distributed networks consist of wearable sensors, fixed-installation sensors and communication links between all of them. The challenges are found in selecting wearable sensors, researching reliable communication among nodes without interfering with proximity detection and suitable for high-multipath, non-line of sight channel conditions, wearable antenna designs, power supply requirements, etc. A dense, distributed, large-scale environment like a railyard requires comprehensive workspace modelling and safety analysis. Interference related to RF sensor deployment, blind spots in vision-based approaches, and wireless propagation in intra and inter-WBAN communication due to dense non-Line-of-Sight workspace environments, metallic heavy machinery and the use of RF sensors, are all individual research challenges in this domain. This paper reviews these challenges, explores potential solutions, and thus provides a comprehensive survey of a holistic system design approach for a wearable railyard worker protection system that is unobtrusive, effective, and reliable.

Inferring social relations from user trajectory data is of great value in real-world applications such as friend recommendation and ride-sharing. Most existing methods predict relationship based on a pairwise approach using some hand-crafted features or rely on a simple skip-gram based model to learn embeddings on graphs. Using hand-crafted features often fails to capture the complex dynamics in human social relations, while the graph embedding based methods only use random walks to propagate information and cannot incorporate external semantic data provided. We propose a novel model that utilizes Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) to learn user embeddings on the User Mobility Heterogeneous Graph in an unsupervised manner. This model is capable of propagating relation layer-wisely as well as combining both the rich structural information in the heterogeneous graph and predictive node features provided. Our method can also be extended to a semi-supervised setting if a part of the social network is available. The evaluation on three real-world datasets demonstrates that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

<p>Raw earth is one of the most widely used building materials and is employed in different techniques, among which adobe and rammed earth are the most common. The respective structural systems, like in masonry buildings, acceptably withstand against gravity loads, though they are significantly vulnerable to earthquakes. Moreover, a great percentage of the World’s population is still inhabited in such environments, which are endangered by future earthquakes. The current article investigates the seismic in-plane performance of an I-shaped rammed earth component by means of advanced nonlinear finite element modelling. In this regard, conventional pushover analyses were conducted to evaluate load/displacement capacities and to assess probable failure modes. It was observed that the component fails mainly due to detachment of the wing walls from the web wall and due to occurrence of diagonal shear cracks at the web. Subsequently, the application of Textile Reinforced Mortar (TRM) strengthening solution to the component was studied and shown to be able to maintain the integrity of the component for larger lateral load levels. Finally, the reliability of the pushover analyses to predict the seismic response was evaluated by comparison with outcomes from incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis.</p>

Long the iconic transportation symbol of Seattle, the monorail system was constructed for the 1962 World’s Fair. Seattle’s monorail vehicles were the last and most technically advanced vehicles designed and built by the firm of Alweg-Forschung, GmbH (Alweg) of Cologne, Germany. The primary train operating systems and components were supplied by major US transit system equipment vendors of that era, including G.E., WABCO, and Rockwell. The two, 4-car train’s original layout and function generally conformed to US transit rail equipment standards and design practices of the early 1960s. However, during 45-years of near-continuous, revenue operation that included upgrades, piecemeal refurbishment projects and accident/incident repairs, many changes were made to the original design with varying levels of success and documentation. In 2007, a small team of Seattle Monorail staff and consultants identified the vehicle systems and components that were most urgently in need of replacement or overhaul given the limited funding and time available for completion of design work, preparation of contractor bid documentation and construction. Project funding was primarily via a grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), supplemented by the City of Seattle. The historical significance of the Seattle Monorail was at the center of the refurbishment program, with great care in functional design, aesthetics and construction being exercised throughout the program until completion in 2010. The modernization included the installation and integration of: communications-based train control; programmable logic controllers (PLC’s) for auxiliary systems; redundancy and interlocking of key safety-related components; streamlined controls that lead to significant weight savings and increased reliability; modern components to address ADA compliance; and ergonomic Driver Cabs. This report discusses the Seattle Center Monorail Refurbishment Program given the unique opportunity to modernize two historic pieces of transportation rolling stock that is anticipated to run in revenue service for the next 45 years.

It is widely observed that today’s engineering products demand increasingly strict tolerances. The shape of a machined surface plays a critical role to the desired functionality of a product. Even a small error can be the difference between a successful product launch and a major delay. Thus, it is important to develop measurement tools to ensure the quality and accuracy of products’ machined surfaces. The key to assessing the quality is robust measurement and inspection techniques combined with advanced analysis. However, conventional Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) such as flatness falls short of characterizing the surface shape. With the advancements in metrology methodology utilizing digital holographic interferometry, large amount of surface data can be captured at high resolution and accuracy without changing platform or technique. This captured High Definition Data (HDD) enables the mining of more valuable information from machined surfaces that most current industry practice cannot achieve in a timely manner. Such new metrology system opens the torrent of observable events at plant floor and increases the transparency of machining processes. This presents great opportunities to characterize machined surface into a new level of details, which can be applied in production quality evaluation and process condition monitoring and control. This research work proposes a framework of a multi-scale surface characterization for surface quality evaluation and process monitoring. Case studies are presented to show how proposed metrics could be applied in surface quality evaluation and process monitoring.
