Abstract:
Moodle is a widely deployed distance learning platform that provides numerous opportunities to enhance the learning process. Moodle’s importance in maintaining the continuity of education in states of emergency and other circumstances has been particularly demonstrated in the context of the COVID-19 virus’ rapid spread. However, there is a problem with personalizing the learning and monitoring of students’ work. There is room for upgrading the system by applying data mining and different machine-learning methods. The multi-agent Observer system proposed in our paper supports students engaged in learning by monitoring their work and making suggestions based on the prediction of their final course success, using indicators of engagement and machine-learning algorithms. A novelty is that Observer collects data independently of the Moodle database, autonomously creates a training set, and learns from gathered data. Since the data are anonymized, researchers and lecturers can freely use them for purposes broader than that specified for Observer. The paper shows how the methodology, technologies, and techniques used in Observer provide an autonomous system of personalized assistance for students within Moodle platforms.

Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic led Catalan universities to do all teaching and evaluation online from 11 March 2020 until the end of term on 30 July. Conventional universities made the transition to online teaching in just a few days and suddenly virtual platforms become the centre of interaction between lecturers and students. Data that were obtained from the virtual platforms gave extremely valuable information about what was being done in class. This paper analyses data taken from Atenea, the Moodle virtual platform at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), during quarantine. The key indicators and a data analysis design for Moodle have been proposed, which reveal teaching developments at various levels (overall and at the centre and subject level). This is applied to study data from the UPC Moodle and the results are discussed. The methodology can be extrapolated to other universities with Moodle platforms because the UPC is a set of small campuses and centres.

Facing the challenge of educational information reform, teacher training is one of the effective ways to promote teachers’ ability. However, currently there are many problems existing in training ways, exchanges and communication, and time arrangement and so on. Blended training works well to integrate the features of C-training and E-training. This essay analyses the function and background of blended training from three fundamental theories: behaviorism, cognitivism and constructivism. Meanwhile, it also combines the characteristics of MOODLE platform following four respective steps: pre-class preparation, class lecture, online research and exchange reflection. We hope researchers can benefit from the model we constructed and can attain the most effective results through addressing contradictories when training by resorting to MOODLE blended training.

Abstract:
This article is dedicated to the problem of finding new teaching methods and activities for a student. Nowadays this issue is topical because traditional lectures, practices, and seminars need refreshing by implementing the innovative technology. The seminar is defined as a kind of practical class at university which implies independent research work. Students fulfill given tasks visually representing the material in the form of a summary, report, message, etc. The author’s idea comes from an item that teacher should take in consideration two vectors of skill development in the process of seminar modeling. They are specific skills in the special-topic sphere (math skills, etc.) and general independent researchers’ skills. The aim of our research is to create a procedure of conducting a modern seminar based on the platform Moodle. Moodle has been chosen as an open-source learning platform for MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) with a significantly enormous potential. The element named ‘Workshop’ can be created on this platform by setting some parameters by teachers. The most important thing is that an author takes into consideration a teacher’s goals and gives an efficient algorithm to adjust necessary parameters to particular goals. This procedure includes 4 phases, such as a setup phase, submission phase, assessment phase and grading evaluation. The main part of this article contains a lot of tips how to provide every phase with instructions, forms, criteria. The author doesn’t deal with using of other active Moodle-elements which ones are planned to be researched later.

Abstract:
Abstract Moodle is applied as an online learning management system in the Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University (TU), where the curriculum has been based on problem-based learning (PBL) since 2015. Little research on the effectiveness of Moodle and students’ attitudes during their studies at the pre-clinical medical level within a PBL curriculum has been conducted. Hence, this cross-sectional study focuses on second- and the third-year (MD-2 and MD-3) preclinical medical students’ attitudes towards Moodle and its effectiveness in the PBL curriculum by using a 27-itemed self-constructed online questionnaire. Additionally, students’ preferences as regards the materials managed by the Moodle platform were also evaluated as students’ preferred behaving style (SPBS). After obtaining ethical approval from the Human Ethics Committee of TU No. 1 (Faculty of Medicine), the data was collected and analyzed by medians and inter-quartile ranges, Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman correlation (ρ). After analyzing the data, the results indicated the following: (1) the top four attitudes scores, (2) the two lowest-attitude scores, (3) the top five effectiveness scores (Ef), (4) the three lowest effectiveness scores, and (5) the top three SPBS scores. Interestingly, a stronger positive Spearman’s correlation (ρ) between ‘Prefer doing quizzes in Moodle to in classroom’ and ‘Moodle enhances learning capability’ was found for MD-3 compared with MD-2. This study reports that Moodle is preferable as a platform supporting students’ self-learning within a PBL curriculum. However, to use the Moodle platform to the highest benefit, instructors need to upgrade its capabilities, especially in the area of student-teacher interaction and the enhancement of students’ critical thinking and creativity, as demonstrated by the lowest scores obtained in this study.

The authors present a learning platform based on a computer game. Learning games combine two industries: education and entertainment, which is often called “Edutainment.” The game is realized as a strategic game (similar to Risk™), implemented as a module for Moodle CMS, utilizing Java Applet technology. Moodle is an open-source course management system (CMS), which is widely used among universities as an eLearning platform. Java Applet enables development of rich-client applications which are executed in web browser environment. During the game, players receive questions from specified Moodle quiz, and all answers are stored back into Moodle system. Students can later verify their score and answers, and examine the test that they actually worked on during the game. This system supports synchronous as well as asynchronous interaction between players.

Abstract:
A Moodle-based podcast teaching platform is designed for the course of aerobic gymnastics. Although abundant teaching tools and resources are available on the Moodle teaching platform, it doesn’t support playing video and audio. Thus, podcast module is added. Podcast, as an innovative medium form, is convenient for playing video and audio. The key to learning aerobic gymnastics is to master the essentials of movements. We adopted the patented technology of a method and device of real-time animation generation in video in teaching, to help learners comprehend movements of aerobic gymnastics and raise learning efficiency. We also performed contrast experiment to check the effect of the teaching platform in teaching practice. The results show that the experimental group performed better than the control group in respect of both routine and movement, and demonstration capability. The platform is largely helpful for learners to comprehend the movements and raise learning efficiency. Thus, these findings indicate the Moodle-based podcast teaching platform has a good application prospect in physical education.

AbstractTaking into consideration the importance of information and communications technology in higher education both as part of the teaching and grading process, but also the limitations in its application in higher education in the Republic of Serbia, this paper outlines the possibilities which the Moodle platform offers for the definition and use of online self-assessment tests and quizzes in the preparation and simulation of the entrance exam for the Faculty of Economics of the University of Niš. To indicate the importance of egrading for the increase in the effectiveness of learning, the paper analyses the number of created accounts and the number of visits, while a statistical analysis of the candidates′ results on the simulated entrance exam, from 2014 to 2016, was used to test the hypothesis on the significance of formative assessment for effective learning. The obtained t-test results indicate that formative assessment in this specific instance contributes to the improvement of the candidates’ learning process and that the application of such a means of student self-assessment in other areas of study would significantly contribute to the increase in the effectiveness of learning. On the other hand, statistical analyses of individual responses to questions represent a significant source of feedback for teachers, which can be used for the purpose of redefining tests.

Abstract:
<p>The main purpose of this research paper is to analyze the moodle data and identify the most influencing features to develop the predictive model. The research applies a wrapper-based feature selection method called Boruta for the selection of best predicting features. Data were collected from eighty-one students who were enrolled in the course called Human Computer Interaction (COMP341), offered by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Kathmandu University, Nepal. Kathmandu University uses Moodle as an e-learning platform. The dataset contained eight features where Assignment.Click, Chat.Click, File.Click, Forum.Click, System.Click, Url.Click, and Wiki.Click was used as the independent features and Grade as the dependent feature. Five classification algorithms such as K Nearest Neighbour, Naïve Bayes, and Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest, and CART decision tree were applied in the moodle data. The finding shows that SVM has the highest accuracy in comparison to other algorithms. It suggested that File.Click and System.Click was the most significant feature. This type of research helps in the early identification of students’ performance. The growing popularity of the teaching-learning process through an online learning system has attracted researchers to work in the field of Educational Data Mining (EDM). Varieties of data are generated through several online activities that can be analyzed to understand the student’s performance which helps in the overall teaching-learning process. Academicians especially course instructors who use e-learning platforms for the delivery of the course contents and the learners who use these platforms are highly benefited from this research.</p>

The article deals with the problem of CLIL elements integration when teaching students of non-linguistic specialities. Main approaches to the definition of this teaching method are given. It is found that different authors consider CLIL as an educational approach, special education techniques, flexible curricular etc., the main purpose of CLIL methodology is to create the link between the study of the foreign language and the content of the students’ major discipline. The necessity of the IT implementation into the educational process has been substantiated (it allows to reduce the unproductive costs of the teacher's labour, gives students wide scope to a freely choose their own trajectory, increases the efficiency and objectivity of monitoring and evaluating learning outcomes, promotes individualization of educational activities, etc.).We have to use IT technologies as they help improve and diversify students’ work. Precisely, when working with students we often use Moodle platform as it provides unlimited opportunities for both students and teachers. It is found that Moodle platform allows developing reading, listening, writing, and grammar skills. Some examples of how to work using Moodle platform is given in the article. It is shown that such parts of Moodle platform as Chat and Forum are of great interest for both foreign language teachers and students. For those students who officially work or are ill, the Assignment module is of particular interest.

Abstract:
In 2013, the Regulation on Distance Learning came into force, probably then no one could have imagined that distance learning would be as popular around the world as it is now. In general, the purpose of developing distance education was to provide the opportunity to receive education in another city or country, but without the direct presence of a person, presence only in the most necessary circumstances, including state exams, thesis defense, and so on. Apropos, even before 2013, distance learning was used in the most famous institutions of higher education in the world. The present is impossible to imagine without distance learning. What has only recently become an isolated phenomenon has become widespread. But at the same time there is a problem of how to effectively organize the educational process using distance learning technologies. The solution to this problem is to use an educational platform, in particular, the Moodle platform. The creation of courses on the Moodle platform with a description of the main stages is characterized. The possibilities of the Moodle educational platform are described and the developed distance courses on the Moodle platform are presented, in particular "Computer networks and the Internet", "Computer graphics and design of polygraphic editions", "Computer design and multimedia", "Programming Internet-oriented applications", which consist of such sections as instructional, which also contains a chat and a forum, lectures, laboratory (practical) works, independent work, modular control work, exam, individual training. The advantages and disadvantages of using distance learning are presented.

Abstract:
In 2004, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya decided to change one of its critical and strategic information services: the online teaching support platform. An Open Source software, Moodle, was adopted and the previous proprietary software was abandoned. In 2020, the home confinement of the population due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19 has been a stress test for the entire university community, and very specifically by those responsible for providing the support of the online teaching support platform. The increase in activity and the prospect of the generalization of online assessment raised the concerns of possible scalability issues with the quiz functionality during the examination period. The solution applied involved using Moodle’s IMS LTI interoperability features to deploy a high-performance version of the Moodle Quizz Module As A Service (SaaS), to plug-and-play within the university’s LMS without drawing on its internal resources. This solution combined with a systems strategy, private cloud operations, internal communication and teacher training, solved this problem and successfully complete the assessment of the university course in a situation of confinement.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused educational institutions all over the world to migrate their teachings online. Since Indonesian government issued the SK Mendiknas No. 107/U/2001, educational institutions had to steadily integrate their learning process with technology. So, this study intends to investigate the effectiveness of using the open-source learning platforms known as Moodle in a selected university, Universitas Lancang Kuning (Unilak) in Indonesia. While multiple courses uses Moodle, this study selected to analyse the 2017/2018 fifth semester students as they are the ones who pioneered Moodle for other classes to use. With a quasi-experimental research design, this study used four types of test to calculate the results of the essay pre-test and post-test on both experimental and control classes. With the eventual mean of 65.53 for the experimental class and 63.25 for the control, this study proved that Moodle does effectively improve Indonesian university EFL students’ learning compared to conventional lecture-style learning. Future research is hoped to extend or compare this study with an investigation on how university EFL students are using e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors that have not been covered in this empirical study.

Abstract:
There is little doubt that student motivation is essential in providing a beneficial learning experience. One way to provide such motivation is to stimulate it through the most suitable methods of assessment. This paper shares the experience acquired by the authors - university lecturers in Civil Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid – both through their assessment methods and the feedback received via the Moodle platform. Over the last eight years the authors have introduced increasingly dynamic methods in their teaching and assessment, with highly satisfactory results being obtained. Over the last three academic years a test through co-assessment has been added and during the two an assessment exercise implemented through the Moodle platform. Each test has a weight of 5% of the final mark for the module. After sitting the respective Moodle test, the students filled in a questionnaire that sought their views not only on the teaching methods but also on how motivational they found such methods. As expected, the results showed that the students considered the internet-based Moodle platform to be useful. However, the most notable finding was that the majority felt that alternative teaching and assessment methods such as, among others, cooperative learning, were those that were most beneficial to their learning experience.

Abstract:
The ongoing pandemic of COVID-19 has affected all countries worldwide in all sectors, mainly in the education sector. Schools and Universities were closed. Teaching and learning were transformed from face to face environments to online platforms. In light of the latter, a pivotal query in this study was to investigate the shift of English as a foreign language (EFL) learning and teaching into Moodle online learning platform and how the delivery of online EFL courses was (un-)beneficial for students to end up the academic year. This research paper sets out to deconstruct recent calls for integrating several E-learning platforms or apps into the Algerian university. To carry out this study, we used an interview with six Algerian university teachers as a first research tool to cover all issues that arose regarding the use of MOODLE e-learning platform imposed by the Ministry of Higher Education. Another target in this paper is to uncover the main difficulties our colleagues have faced during the confinement. The second research tool we used in this survey was an online class observation followed by six questions on Moodle, the Google Meet app, and a closed Facebook group. We chose 24 MA Language and communication students from the English language department of Mostaganem University to reveal the obstacles they faced throughout the Covid- 19 Pandemic. The results showed that both teachers and students are ready to access various online platforms or apps as alternatives such as Zoom, Google Meet and Facebook closed groups to continue teaching and learning English.

This paper identifies a set of universal instructional design (UID) principles appropriate to distance education (DE) and specifically tailored to the needs of instructional designers and instructors teaching online. These principles are then used to assess the accessibility level of a sample online course and the availability of options in its LMS platform (MoodleTM) to increase course accessibility. Numerous accessibility-sensitive plug-in modules are found to be available to Moodle users, though relatively few features were included in the sample course analysed. This may be because they have not been made available to instructors at the institutional level. The paper offers a series of recommendations to improve the accessibility of online DE to learners with diverse abilities, disabilities, and needs.
