Albalad, Alcalá Jorge. "Post-Synthetic Modification of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Polyhedra (MOPs)."
The disserted Ph.D. Thesis was dedicated to the design and implementation of new post-synthetic modification (PSM) techniques to porous metal-organic materials, namely Coordination Polymers (CPs), Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Metal-Organic Polyhedra (MOPs), in order to modify their physicochemical properties to inaccessible levels by common direct synthesis methodologies. The Thesis starts offering a brief bibliographic review of the evolution of metal-organic materials field, from their beginnings up to their actual applications and future perspectives. This chapter presents the most relevant concepts in their synthesis and their potential PSM, both in the metallic nodes or in the organic linkers that assemble the framework; with particular emphasis on the post-synthetic methodologies exploited up to date. Next, the Thesis is divided in four extra Chapters, each of them corresponding to a specific post-synthetic modification process. Initially, the Thesis focuses on the post-synthetic modification of the metallic subunits of macrocycle-based CPs. The presence of a second source of metal ions quelated inside the macrocyclic cavity induces a single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transition in contact with water, obtaining a regular distribution of bimetallic paddlewheel subunits within the framework. Such transition was studied by single-crystal X-Ray diffraction techniques, as well as spectroscopic and magnetic characterization techniques. Next, an unexplored pathway for the PSM of MOFs is postulated. Thanks to their nanoporous structure, MOFs can diffuse highly-reactive gases through their framework in order to modify their structure through solid-gas reactions in a matter of minutes. To this end, an olefin-tagged MOF is post-synthetically modified by diffusing ozone gas through the porous channels of the material. The as-obtained reaction intermediate can be chemoselectively converted to either aldehyde or carboxylic acid groups without affecting the crystalline integrity of the material. The whole two-step process is characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques, as well as single-crystal X-Ray diffraction. Afterwards, the post-synthetic modification of metal-organic architectures is extended to zero-dimensional materials. Concretely, it is demonstrated how the surface functionalization of Rhodium (II)-based Metal-Organic Polyhedra, both through coordination or covalent chemistries, is able to tune their solubility within a wide range of solvents, without affecting the scaffold’s integrity. This post-modification opens up new pathways for exploiting these materials. Because of their finite structure, MOPs can be seen as stoichiometrically-functionalized nanoparticles with tunable solubility. Such acquired knowledge is then applied to expand the available roster of Rh(II)-based MOPs. Through a two-step protection/deprotection strategy, two unprecedented Rh-MOPs with 24 free carboxylate or amino groups on their periphery are synthesized, unobtainable by direct synthesis methodologies. Both groups arguably present one of the richest chemistries in coordination and covalent chemistry, respectively, thus opening new pathways and frontiers towards the application of these materials.

Full textBecause of the increased availability of cross-sectional imaging modalities in small animal medicine the incidental finding of material in the middle ear is more common, especially in brachycephalic dogs. Because the animals show no clinical signs, an acute inflammation is unlikely. Therefore recent studies term it as primary secretory otitis media (PSOM). The aim of the current study was to determine whether brachycephalic dogs with PSOM show a conductive hearing loss compared to brachycephalic dogs without changes in the middle ear. Additionally it was evaluated whether French bulldogs suffer from PSOM more frequent than pugs. BAER was recorded in 41 pugs and 41 French bulldogs, which were under general anesthesia because of the surgical correction of the brachycephalic syndrome. In all patients a computed tomography of the head, an otoscopy and if possible a myringotomy with aspiration of the fluid in the middle ear was performed. If fluid was available a cytological examination and a bacterial culture of the fluid was initiated. In the current study no conductive hearing loss was detected in brachycephalic dogs with PSOM. The latencies of wave I were increased in patients with PSOM, although the thresholds of hearing were not increased. The increased latencies of wave I can be explained by the fluid in the middle ear as well as the stenotic external ear canal. The thresholds of hearing in dogs with PSOM were tendentially higher than in dogs without fluid in the middle ear, but the correlation was not significant. In 40 % of the patients with PSOM in one ear the threshold of hearing in both ears is at the same level. Therefore there is no strict correlation between fluid in the middle ear and an increased threshold of hearing on the affected side. This could be explained by a sensorineural hearing loss caused by chronic inflammation of the middle ear. Until now a chronic inflammation as a cause of sensorineural hearing loss has only been described in human medicine, not in veterinary medicine. The pathogenesis is still unknown. The results show that French bulldogs suffer more frequently from the PSOM than pugs. French bulldogs usually show a bigger soft palate than pugs which could result in a dysfunction of the tuba auditiva. Hence the bigger soft palate could be causing the increased prevalence of PSOM in French bulldogs. Compared to pugs without PSOM, French bulldogs without PSOM show an increased latency of wave I as well as an increased threshold of hearing. Additionally for both breeds an increase in the threshold of hearing by 30 dB compared to normocephalic breeds could be detected (SHIU et al. 1997). It is remarkable that French bulldogs as well as pugs show a hearing loss without correlation to the PSOM. In conclusion hearing loss has to be added to the characteristic triad of symptoms of the brachycephalic syndrome. Clinical signs of hearing loss like loyalty to the owner could be misinterpreted especially in these breeds, since this is a favored behavior of these dogs

Full textIn this work the potential of mechanochemical synthesis to produce metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is presented and possible applications for the materials are shown. In the focus of research regarding faster and more efficient methods of synthesis, mechanochemistry is an promising alternative. This solid-state reaction can be carried out without the use of solvent, exhibits shortened reaction times and a quantitative turnover of reactands. Therefore it is a method of green chemistry, and its importance is constantly increasing. The results show that mechanochemical synthesis is capable of producing metal-organic compounds in all dimensionalities. The reaction conditions can be transferred to synthesize isostructural and structural analogous compounds. Parameters influencing the formation of products were identified, and their control led to a well-aimed design of various compounds. In addition, conditions influencing the properties of the product were determined. In terms of a specific surface area as large as possible, the synthesis was optimized and a postsynthetic activation was developed, together resulting in an improved capacity for gas adsorption and transferrable to other compounds. The results concerning gas storage present one possible application of mechanochemically synthesized MOFs, that are produced as fine powders with enlarged surfaces. Furthermore, intercalation of solvent molecules in the pores of a MOF was investigated. It shows that the MOF adjustes its lattice paramters to the guest molecules. The potential to intercalate solid-state compounds is demonstrated using pharmaceutical drug molecules. Catalytic investigations show a good activity of the mechanochemically synthesized raw product.

Full textIn 2002 the member states of EU took a decision regarding whether to introduce a special tax base on digital supplies or not. This tax base was later on implemented to the member states domestic laws. Question may sometimes arise as to where or by whom VAT should be paid regarding electronically supplies. The administrative court and the Swedish government have made different judgments regarding two Swedish companies whose services already have been subject to VAT in other member states. While the administrative court sentenced company A to pay VAT the government exempted company B. This bachelor thesis will examine how tax claims regarding the same electronically supply can occur in different member states and if the providers are selling to or from a permanent establishment or if they are to be considered as distributors. The answer to the first question can partly be due to the difference between Swedish law and EU-law regarding the different use of word for designating a taxable person. The words used for designating a taxable person have different meanings which can constitute confusion. It can furthermore be due to the vague and broad definition for the term electronically supplies and the differences that occur, regarding what can be covered by the definition of electronically supplies. Providers of digital supplies shall pay VAT in the country where the buyer has his place of business or where the fixed establishment is located to which the supplies are provided. Regarding revenue or acquisition it is the one who acts like the real seller or the customer who acquires and consumes the provided service who determines where the supply is situated. The main elements for the services provided have to be examined. Providers of digital supplies are not to be regarded as distributors because they do not meet the criteria’s that are set out for the term.

Full textIndexing structures are wellknown for exact subwords (suffix array, tree, automaton), however no indexing structure is known for approximate patterns. We study patterns with don't cares, for which a recent result proposed a linear bound of the number of maximal irredundant patterns with don't cares. We introduce the primitive patterns, allowing to reduce the number of interesting patterns that can be extracted from a given text. Like the maximal irredundant patterns, the primitive patterns form a basis for the maximal patterns. We show therefore that the number of primitive patterns, and consequently the number of maximal irredundant ones, is not linear but exponential. This work presents properties of such patterns, an extraction algorithm, and an algorithm which decides the primitivity without computing the basis. These algorithms are extended to the extraction in multiple texts, to the update after adding a new text, and to ambiguous characters for which the don't care character is a special case. We introduce a scoring scheme, reducing the number of conserved patterns

Full textIn this thesis, we aim at obtaining a better understanding of the statics and dynamics of the wetting of liquids on soft gels, otherwise known as elastowetting. First, we develop a quantitative Schlieren optics to measure the surface deformation of a transparent gel film with a high precision over large areas in real time. The long-range surface deformation of soft PDMS films is found to be dependent on the sessile droplet size, and the thickness and elasticity of the soft films. We build a model based on linear elasticity theory with the integration of the surface tension of soft materials that predicts the long-range surface deformation in excellent agreement with the data. We also bring the experimental proof and theoretical analysis of the importance of contact angle hysteresis in the description of the deformation of the surface of the gel. We demonstrate that the tangential component of the liquid-vapor surface tension at the contact line, whose contribution are often neglected, significantly affects the surface deformation. Wetting dynamics is investigated by deflating droplets on PDMS films with well-controlled thickness. It is shown that energy dissipation in the soft gel depends on the thickness when the latter is smaller than 100 μm. The viscoelastic braking effect and the thickness effect are both well rationalized with a model based on the theory of linear viscoelasticity and a simple scaling law accounting for the thickness effect captures very well our experiments. Finally, we demonstrate that we are able to guide moving droplets with coatings having a gradient of their thickness

Full textBetween the XIIIth century and the XVIIth century, a specific nautical vocabulary is building, vocabulary of Levant navy of the different from Ponant one used in the Atlantic. This vocabulary come from the travel, in all the Mediterranean space, of the words in the time, from Indo-European, Latin and Greek languages. This exchanges allow all languages Mediterranean learn from each other. Travel stories in Jerusalem constitute an important source because they are drafted by men who never have seen previously sea and who live their first experience of sailing; they have to learn everything to be able to transmit their experience to their readers. The Mediterranean linguistic crossbreeding is the fact of the sailors who transmit to the traders and to the travelers who cross the Mediterranean Sea. The writers-travelers tell their navigation by showing their feelings, by expressing their admiration for the new spectacles which they discover. As sea is an unknown element, it very often generates fear. The sailing time is a necessary and rewarding event. The constitution of a specific vocabulary shows that beyond wars, corsairs, perils of sea, the men spoke to each other, built together the necessary tools to name things, it means understand its and understand each other

Full textThis Thesis is devoted to the study of the interaction of light with Coordination Polymers (CPs) and Metal‐Organic Frameworks (MOFs). Two strategies have been followed to accomplish this objective. The first approach consisted on the study of the photothermal effect observed in different subfamilies of reported MOFs, which exhibited local heating upon UV‐Vis irradiation. Such temperature increase was proved useful for MOF activation and Covalent Post‐Synthetic Modification (CPSM) purposes. The second strategy was based on the synthesis of CPs following a ligand design approach using light‐harvesting Ru2+‐terpyridine complexes. Chapter 1 encloses a general introduction to CPs and MOFs, containing a historical overview of their discoveries and evolution, as well as some of the multiple applications in which these materials are involved. In this sense, we have focused on the applications arisen from the use of light as external stimulus. In Chapter 2, we have summarized the main objective of this Thesis and detailed the specific sub goals. Chapter 3 introduces the fundamentals of the light‐to‐heat conversion in different materials. Some examples of MOFs composites, where the nanoparticles exhibit the photothermal properties are reviewed. Moreover, a summary of some of the most common methods for removing guests from MOF pores (activation) is included. In this chapter, we demonstrate that MOFs also show photothermal effect and that this effect can be used to activate them by removing the solvent molecules after their irradiation with a UV‐Vis lamp for short periods. In Chapter 4, Post‐Synthetic Modification (PSM) of MOFs is reviewed based on the interactions between the framework and the desired modifying agents. To this end, some alternative strategies to perform such reactions are included. Thereafter, the use of the local heat generated upon MOF irradiation in CPSM reactions is reported. Amino‐tagged MOFs with strong photothermal effects and anhydrides or aldehydes were mixed (sovent‐free), and subsequent UV‐Vis exposure for short times allowed the melting of the reagents and the covalent reaction. In Chapter 5, the light‐harvesting and photothermal properties of some organometallic complexes are exemplified. The beneficial strategy of confining these moieties as building units in CPs and MOFs for enhancing their performance is described. The synthesis and characterization of three new CPs build up from Ru2+‐terpyridine complexes is reported here. Their photothermal characterization is performed and the new CPs showed maximum temperatures in the range of the MOFs with the strongest photothermal effect. In addition, future assessment of the CPs in photocatalytic reactions might be carried out, taking advantage of the close disposition of the Ru complexes and the metal ions of the nodes.

The last part of the thesis work was to create a dynamic help tool, from where application specific help could be created. The usability was evaluated with a variant of usability engineering. Not all of the original method could be used because the products analyzed were already finished. The results from the analysis show that MOSS 2007 is quite usable, especially when it comes to document handling. It is also possible to create web pages and sites with ease. MOSS 2007 lacks in usability when it comes to presenting information to the user regarding what is going on in the system and. The system can also be quite complex and much to grasp for an end user. Solutions created in MOSS 2007 follows closely the usability of MOSS 2007 but they can be made very usable if only certain aspects are considered. Example of improvements could be the placement of the help system, clearer error messages and an overlook of managing user rights. The dynamic help tool was created in the programming language C# and based on the .NET platform. The implementation is a so-called Web Part that can easily be inserted on a page in MOSS 2007. The help tool uses the built in help system in MOSS 2007 for editing present help files and for adding new files to it. The help tool has a very minimalistic design and the focus was on the tasks it should be performing rather than a nice-looking interface. To ensure usability for the help tool, future work should be done, testing the product with real users and apply other usability methods to improve the help tool. As of now, no usability methods have been used while developing the help tool, nor have any tests with real users been performed. This is to be considered as future work.As a conclusion, both MOSS 2007 and the solutions created for it can be said to have a certain degree of usability shown from the evaluations. Improvements can be done, and should be, in order to increase the users’ experience. With the help tool, it is now possible to create solution specific help for a project intended for MOSS 2007.

Full textThe focus of our work is on “portmanteau words”. Indeed, results of studies of semantics and structural lexicology have shown that there is no sign that is not derived from another sign and therefore of lexical creation which is not a reminder of already existing structures. At the heart of reflection on the motivation of the sign, a portmanteau word represents the sign grasped in its totality and its segmentality. To understand the technique of the arrangement that leads to the formation of words, Alain Finkielkraut, argues that it is paramount to transgress the linearity of the sign by reciting one’s speech lesson backwards. The portmanteau word considers this assumption seriously considering that in reality words contained in the dictionary constitute stray pieces of an unknown lexicon. Henceforth, a word is no longer a group of different sounds corresponding to a meaning, a passive vehicle carrying a signification as taught by the old grammar dictionary. This is why Freud and Saussure have clearly demonstrated in a peculiar way, that through the mechanism of the slip, the meaning of a word can also be understood by metanalysis for one, and by anagrammatic derivation for the other. Thus, whatever the process, the analog mechanism remains the same, ensuring the fusion of sound and meaning. Finally, the purpose of this thesis will be to explore, in the context of a semiological study, the mechanisms at work in the formation of portmanteau words as well as the effects of meaning and generated style by this type of creation

Full textWe deal in this thesis with language theory and its applications to games. We use infinite words to model infinitely repeated games. We give a formal definition in terms of infinite words for the notions of strategy, strategical language, minimal strategy for a strategical language and Nash equilibrium. Strategical languages are definited as those generated by a non-deterministic strategy. We prove in the first part of this thesis that the family of strategical langages coincide with that of closed ones in the topological space of infinite words. In the second part, we give a formal definition of a mixed strategy, wich models probablistic games. We show that each mixed strategy, wich models probablistic games. We show that each mixed strategy allows to define a probalility measure on the family of Borelian sets of infinite words

Full textThis ward presents methods and results about generating functions, with general solutions of combinatorial or probabilistic problems, and applications to computer science. First the classical problem of random words, for which partial solutions of particular cases were only known, is associated with a prefix-free language : so seeking a probability and a waiting time is reduced ta determining a multivariate generating function ; closed formulas, exact or asymptotic, are given for some examples, from regular languages (where Markov chains and rational generating functions occur), to non-context-free languages (as prefix-free palindromes over m letters, where the generating function is transcendental). Then the previous method is applied to: memory allocation and a paging algorithm, collisions in a hash table (birthday surprise), an algorithm for decoding a message transmitted through a channel. Afterwards properties are proved for generating functions with coefficients generated by an automaton, as the Thue-Morse function: verification of a functional equation, expansion into an infinite product, transcendence, expansion into a series of rational fractions. Finally a concurrency measure is proposed: the use of generating functions of regular languages, and of asymptotic analysis, leads to an algorithm for computing this measure defined here as the average asymptotic value of the ration between the waiting time and the global activity time of the concurrent processes

Full textPrevious research demonstrates that having access to the syntactic structure of sentences helps children to discover the meaning of novel words. This implies that infants need to get access to aspects of syntactic structure before they know many words. Since in all the world’s languages the prosodic structure of a sentence correlates with its syntactic structure, and since function words/morphemes are useful to determine the syntactic category of words, infants might use phrasal prosody and function words to bootstrap their way into lexical and syntactic acquisition. In this thesis, I empirically investigated the role of phrasal prosody and function words to constrain syntactic analysis in young children (PART 1) and whether infants exploit this information to learn the meanings of novel words (PART 2). In part 1, I constructed minimal pairs of sentences in French and in English, testing whether children exploit the relationship between syntactic and prosodic structures to drive their interpretation of noun-verb homophones. I demonstrated that preschoolers use phrasal prosody online to constrain their syntactic analysis. When listening to French sentences such as [La petite ferme][…–[The little farm][…, children interpreted ferme as a noun, but in sentences such as [La petite][ferme…] – [The little girl][closes…, they interpreted ferme as a verb (Chapter 3). This ability was also attested in English-learning preschoolers who listened to sentences such as ‘The baby flies…’: they used prosodic information to decide whether “flies” was a noun or a verb (Chapter 4). Importantly, in further studies I demonstrated that even infants around 20-months use phrasal prosody to recover syntactic structures and to predict the syntactic category of upcoming words (Chapter 5), an ability which would be extremely useful to discover the meaning of unknown words. This is what I tested in part 2: whether the syntactic information obtained from phrasal prosody and function words could allow infants to constrain their acquisition of word meanings. A first series of studies relied on right-dislocated sentences containing a novel verb in French: [ili dase], [le bébéi] - ‘hei is dasing, the babyi’ (meaning ‘the baby is dasing’) which is minimally different from the transitive sentence [il dase le bébé] (he is dasing the baby). 28-montholds were shown to exploit prosodic information to constrain their interpretation of the novel verb meaning (Chapter 6). In a second series of studies, I investigated whether phrasal prosody and function words constrain the acquisition of nouns and verbs. I used sentences like ‘Regarde la petite bamoule’, which can be produced either as [Regarde la petite bamoule!] - Look at the little bamoule!, where ‘bamoule’ is a noun, or as [Regarde], [la petite] [bamoule!] - Look, the little (one) is bamouling, where bamoule is a verb. 18-month-olds correctly parsed such sentences and attributed a noun or verb meaning to the critical word depending on its position within the syntactic-prosodic structure of the sentences (Chapter 7). Taken together, these studies show that infants exploit function words and the prosodic structure of an utterance to recover the sentences’ syntactic structure, which in turn constrains the possible meaning of novel words. This powerful mechanism might be extremely useful for infants to construct a first-pass syntactic structure of spoken sentences even before they know the meanings of many words. Although prosodic information and functional elements can surface differently across languages, our studies suggest that this information may represent a universal and extremely useful tool for infants to access syntactic information through a surface analysis of the speech stream, and to bootstrap their way into language acquisition

Full textThis linguistic work on typology is a study on the order of constituents in chinese. Is chinese a S-O-V (subject - verb- object) language or a S-V-O language? This dissertation discusses in detail the different arguments given by the tenants of the two different hypotheses. It also deals with other word orders than the sole order of the "subject", "verb" and "object" constituents. The work is divided into three parts : one diachronic part untitled "Word order in ancient Chinese", one synchronic part on "Word order in contemporary Chinese" and one part in where our corpus is analyzed. The diachronic work shows that the Chinese was originally a S-V-O language and has been unchanged all along its history. The changes were however significant in other areas : prepositions, classifiers, etc. It is showed in the synchronic part, that the hypothesis of S-V-O is more convincing. The third part presents two oral speeches belonging both to Standard Mandarin. One detailed analysis of these two speeches show undoubdetly that contemporary Chinese is indeed a S-V-O language

Full textThe problem of viewing from different perspectives is part of the dynamics of post-Second World War French drama and the Inter-African Theatre Contest organised by the R. F. I. In Africa, writers have taken on this genre which had until this time been considered foreign to African cultures. The result : new experiences and new concepts including street theatre, ritual theatre, koteba, didiga, etc. This theatre takes root in a return to basics in relation to various African traditions, and relies on modern, ancient Greek and classical French theatre. Research has shown that African theatre is based on two distinct cultures, two opposing histories, two diverse peoples in their language of communication with regards to French theatre. This work was written from a comparative perspective. This thesis examines both views expressed through the various texts to identy similarities, differences, and invariants, yet it also underscores the difficulties encountered pertaining to the production, representation and diffusion of this genre in Africa and France. Within these texts, intertextuality plays an important role because positioning of "Self to Others" varies according to different points of view. Within this exchange of views, the texts converse through internal and external dialogue. Correspondingly, observation of others is an exchange, as looking without being seen is a myth. Therefore, based on the manner in which we are received, refused or shared, the first conflictual or fruitful relationship is developed. In their writings, the creators expose various manipulations upon which are founded a rejection of the Other. In addition, solutions are proposed : Theatre is capable of recounting our sorrow, laughter, hope and the manner in which we cope with reality. However, the barriers that would impede dialogue must first be broken in order for our words of sorrow to be transformed into words of hope

Full textThis thesis describes the work process and the results for the development of a newkind of ergonomic cleaning mop, ranging from basic concept to a virtually productionready digital prototype. The project was made in cooperation with, Ömer Altun, whowas also the project supervisor, and whose plan it is to launch this new product onthe market in a foreseeable future. The mop is meant to be used by both professionalcleaning staff and ordinary home users. What makes this product unique is that it hasa movable center piece that simplifies the cleaning under low furniture. The work began with the establishment of a product requirements specification andlater a study of similar products and existing functional models was conducted. Afterthese surveys the work began with refining the existing concepts in order to makethem more complete. In consultation with Ömer, further refining of one of these newconcepts was conducted, but was split into seven smaller steps. After the initial refining process, effort shifted into the investigation and selection ofappropriate materials and manufacturing methods. At this stage, two experimentswere also conducted and subsequently used to support the final decisions concerningthe choice of materials and design. When the materials and methods were adopted, a detailed CAD model of the wholeproduct and related technical drawings was made and also a number of FEM-analyseson all critical details, to ensure that performance requirements were met, wasconducted. These CAD models are closer described in detail in the chapter“Detaljkonstruktion”.In the final sections of discussion and evaluation are suggestions for furtherimprovements. And also some evaluation of the work process and the problems andsolutions encountered during the project execution.
