Abstract:
Regulation of chromatin structure involves histone modifications such as acetylation. Since 1996, the identification and characterization of histone acetyltransferases have had tremendous impact on our understanding of the molecular mechanisms related to eukaryotic gene regulation and human diseases associated with abnormal chromatin functions. The MYST family of histone acetyltransferases is very interesting because of their various biological functions. In agreement with the correlation between aberrant histone acetylation and cancer, the MYST family proteins MOZ and MORF are linked to leukemogenesis.
Identification and characterization of a gene encoding a novel histone acetyltransferase were the goals of this thesis project. Human MORF gene was cloned and the encoded protein, MORF, was shown to be very similar to MOZ. Biochemical studies demonstrated that both MOZ and MORF possess intrinsic histone acetyltransferase activities. The amino- and carboxy-terminal regions of MOZ and MORF contain transcriptional repression and activation domains, respectively.
Runx2, an osteoblast-specific transcription factor, binds to the activation domains of MOZ and MORF and thus recruits them to the osteocalcin promoter for transcriptional activation. TAZ, a WW-domain transcriptional coactivator of Runx2, potentiates the transcriptional activation of the osteocalcin promoter by MOZ and Runx2. Interestingly, treatment of cells with PMA enhances the synergy between MOZ and TAZ in activating the osteocalcin promoter. Consistent with this, PMA treatment strengthens the interaction of Runx2 with MOZ and TAZ.
This study, therefore, identified the histone acetyltransferase MORF and demonstrated that MOZ and MORF are transcriptional coactivators, thus providing new insights into how histone acetyltransferases are implicated in cell differentiation and leukemogenesis.

This study is a morphophonological and etymology analysis of words from a dictionary (HOUAISS, 2009) with the termination -ada, more specifically, we observe the morphemic context (base + suffix) of word derived from nominal basis, with and without consonant insertion and we try to find generalizations. It should be noted, especially, that this dissertation is meant to discuss words with nominal bases that have consonantal epenthesis ? a mechanism used to solve structural problems of syllabic character. For data analysis, methodologically, the sample was divided into three major groups: (i) words derived from nominal basis (divided into thematic and athematic words); (Ii) words derived from verbal basis; and (iii) words with the termination -ada not suffixal (composed of vernacular formations and loans). From this work, it was found that words derived from thematic and athematic bases (it refers to a regular insertion in Portuguese) behave differently: (i) words with athematic bases, insert /z/, consonant less invasive, because only solves the syllabic character problem (cf. p? + -ada > pazada); (ii) words with thematic bases insert /r/ and neutralize the VT of base word in favor of the vowel /a/ (cf. bicho + -ada > bicharada). Moreover, the consonant epenthesis were characterized on the basis of texts used as theoretical foundation and the analysis of data which allowed the identification of more favorable context for the consonant inserts in PB: the athematic base words (20.5% against 2.6% of the thematic base words). Within of the athematic, the most favorable context is the words ending in a vowel candidate of accent (66.6%). Was highlighted also the possible reasons for the PB system select other consonants, different from /z/ and /r/, based on our data, like the fact there are already similar forms in the language with different semantics specification (cf. livroxada ~ livrada), the issue of variation (cf. bambu < bambucada ~ bambuzal ~ bambu?al), and cases of etymological trace (cf. paulada). Finally, we highlighted the need to carry out tests with speakers to observe the productivity of /z/ and /r/ in the PB system, the hypothesis is that /r/ is more crystallized in the language, and /z/ it is consonant with regular insertion force, i.e., probably it is the consonant more applied by native speakers of PB.
Este estudo constitui uma an?lise morfofonol?gica e etimol?gica de palavras dicionarizadas (HOUAISS, 2009) com a termina??o ?ada, mais especificamente, observamos o contexto de juntura morf?mica (base + sufixo) de palavras derivadas de base nominal, com e sem inser??o consonantal, em busca de generaliza??es. Cabe salientar, principalmente, que esta disserta??o tem por intuito discutir as palavras de base nominal que apresentam ep?ntese consonantal ? mecanismo utilizado para resolver problemas estruturais de car?ter sil?bico. Para a an?lise dos dados, metodologicamente, a amostra foi distribu?da em tr?s grandes grupos: (i) palavras derivadas de base nominal (divididas em tem?ticas e atem?ticas); (ii) palavras derivadas de base verbal; e (iii) palavras com a termina??o ?ada n?o sufixal (composta por forma??es vernaculares e empr?stimos). A partir disso, verificou-se que palavras derivadas de bases tem?ticas e atem?ticas (ao que se refere ? inser??o de consoante regular no portugu?s) se comportam de maneira diferente, em PB: (i) palavras de bases atem?ticas, na deriva??o, de modo geral, inserem /z/, consonante menos invasiva, que apenas resolve o problema de car?ter sil?bico (cf. p? + -ada > pazada); (ii) palavras de bases tem?ticas inserem /r/ e neutralizam a VT da base em favor da vogal /a/ (cf. bicho + -ada > bicharada). Al?m disso, as ep?nteses consonantais foram caracterizadas com base nos textos utilizados como fundamenta??o te?rica e na an?lise dos dados o que permitiu a identifica??o do contexto mais favor?vel para as inser??es consonantais, em PB: o grupo das palavras de base atem?tica (20,5%, contra 2,6% das palavras de base tem?tica). Dentro do grupo das atem?ticas, o contexto mais prop?cio ? o das palavras terminadas em vogal candidata a acento (66,6%). Foi destacado, ainda, os poss?veis motivos para o sistema do PB selecionar outras consoantes diferente de /z/ e /r/, com base em nossos dados, como o fato de j? haver outras formas semelhantes na l?ngua com diferente especifica??o sem?ntica (cf. livroxada ~ livrada), a quest?o da varia??o (cf. bambu < bambucada ~ bambuzal ~ bambu?al), e os casos de vest?gio etimol?gico (cf. paulada). Por fim, salientou-se a necessidade de se realizar testes com falantes para se observar a produtividade de /z/ e /r/ no sistema do PB. Nossa hip?tese ? de /r/ est? mais cristalizada na l?ngua, e que /z/ ? a consoante de inser??o regular vigente, isto ?, a consoante provavelmente mais aplicada por falantes do PB.

This paper will try to answer this by studying cases from the bronze-to-Iron age in the North of Europe, by applying forensic, historic and criminological methods. In my paper I have conclu- ded that there is not a single motive to why the people in the bog were murdered. Ho- wever I have determined that they were all murdered.

A morpho-structural analysis was performed in the uplifted siliciclastic deposits of the Serra do Martins Formation along the Portalegre, Martins and Santana plateaux, in the southeastern and central regions of Rio Grande do Norte State. Due to the lack of biostratigraphic records, this formation has a disputable age.The adopted approach was based on the analysis of the drainage patterns and in the recognition of topographic surfaces and regional structures, subjected to neotectonic deformation and rejuvenation the present stress field. These events are recorded in the lineament arrays and as anomalous features of the landscape, such as the uplifted plateaux.The morpho-sculptural evolution of the studied blocks is expressed as erosive and accumulative processes. The former ones include erosional scarpments, cuestas and amphitheaters as the most characteristic features, while debris slopes represent acumulative examples. Such elements attest to the recent disequilibrium of the plateaux, and the absence of well developed alluvium terraces suggest an accelerated uplift process. The directions of the linear features observed in remote sensing products evidence the control of the basement structural trends, inherited from the pre-Cenozoic evolution. The NNE-SSW direction controls the main erosional features of the plateaux, while the N-S direction is a major drainage control, being also recognized in the Potiguar Basin. An E-W trend occurs as a less developed direction, reflecting either a system of mesozoic basic dykes or precambrian brittle structures. As regards to the drainage arrays, an arborescent, varying to a roughly N-S rectangular pattern, was identified in the Portalegre-Martins block. The Santana plateau displays rectilinear (northern border) and dendritic arborescent (southern border) patterns. In the sedimentary cover, the drainage pattern varies from rectangular to angular, reflecting inheritance from the crystaline basement. The most significative directions, N, NE and NW, mark the erosional fronts of the plateaux. Drainage anomalies, characterized by elbows or paralell confluencies, reinforce the arguments mentioned above. The data sets evidence the relationships between endogenous (lithology, structures) and exogenous features as the main controls of terrain dissecation, associated to vertical (epirogenesis) movements and horizontal tectonics. A final discussion addresses the relationships of the Serra do Martins Formation with the sedimentary record of Potiguar Basin, trying to establish chronostratigraphic links with the main evolutionary steps of this part of the Borborema Province, and possible mechanisms involved in the uplift of the plateaux and other stratigraphic units in the region

As anomalias de drenagem caracterizadas por deflex?es em cotovelo ou conflu?ncias em arranjo paralelo refor?am os argumentos acima expostos. Cette thèse étudie les rapports entre la mort et le péché dans les écrits de Sir Thomas More (1478–1535). L’un des objectifs est de rechercher les motivations spirituelles et non politiques qui ont pu pousser l’auteur à choisir délibérément le martyre, mais sans réduire sa vie aux mois qui ont précédé son exécution. Partant de l’évolution de la conception de la mort et du salut dans la pensée occidentale, l’analyse se propose de déterminer la position de Thomas More dans le discours pastoral de la chrétienté, et l’originalité de son propos par rapport à quelques autres humanistes du XVIe siècle, notamment dans l’élaboration des artes moriendi. Le péché, jugé mortifère suivant l’enseignement paulinien et augustinien, est étudié sous ses divers aspects dans les écrits moriens : péché originel et péché capital, péché mortel et péché véniel. Il est un sujet de polémique essentiel au moment de la lutte contre les luthériens, dans laquelle More se distingue tout particulièrement et qui fera évoluer sa position vers une plus grande rigidité. L’étude se poursuit par une exploration des représentations moriennes de l’au-delà : Jugement, enfer, diable et purgatoire. Une définition du paradis morien clôture une ultime partie consacrée à la sainteté et au martyre. La thèse avancée est que Thomas More a choisi le martyre pour être assuré de gagner le paradis, poussé par la crainte de la damnation peut-être, mais surtout mu par un exceptionnel désir du ciel perceptible dans l’ensemble de ses écrits
This study examines the relationship between death and sin in the writings of Sir Thomas More (1478-1535). It aims at better understanding the author and researching the spiritual motivations – independently of the political reasons – which may have driven him to deliberately choose martyrdom, but without reducing his life to its last months. Drawing from the evolution of the conception of death and salvation in Western thinking, the analysis endeavours to determine Thomas More’s position in Christian pastoral teaching, and to show the originality of his approach compared to that of a few other 16th century humanists, especially as regards ars moriendi. Since Paul, and then Augustine, established that sin brought death, the two concepts are analysed in relation to each other, and various aspects of sin are examined, such as original sin and capital sins, mortal and venial sins. In the fight against Lutheran ideas, the conception of sin is a polemical subject, and More, at the core of the debate, is led to harden his position on the matter. The study then explores the Morean representations of after-life : Judgement, Hell, the devil and Purgatory. A definition of the Morean paradise marks the end of the last part of this study, devoted to sainthood and martyrdom. The thesis developed here is that Thomas More chose martyrdom to be assured of a place in paradise, out of fear of damnation perhaps, but more likely, out of an exceptional longing for heaven, perceptible throughout his work

Cette hantise de la mort peut-elle en faire un objet d'art ou l'objet d'un art qui tend à réévaluer le statut du corps humain à notre époque ? Il existe une opposition fondamentale entre le corps humain voué à la disparition et la conception contemporaine d'un corps beau et inaltérable. A travers ce memento mori, je traite la mort en tant qu'expression plastique et je soulève le questionnement de sa légitimité en tant que langage pictural. Ma confrontation avec la mort m'a amenée à réaliser des œuvres qui méditent sur l'existence, sur la temporalité et sur la nature du rapport de l'être humain à son corps et sur la mort dans ses diverses connotations
Death is a fact that persues us inspite of our efforts to dissimulate it. The question seems accordingly to be : can this obsession be turned into an object of art which tends to reconsider the status of the human body in our epoch ? There is an essential opposition between the human body that is doomed to vanish and the contemporary vision of a beautiful and unaltered body. Threoughout this "memento mori", I tried to explore death as a plastic expression which raises the question of its legitimacy as a pictorial language. My confrontation with death allowed me to achieve several works that meditate upon existence, temporality, and the nature of the relationship between the human being and his body, and death in its various connotations

Abstract:
La pregunta que formula la presente investigación gira en torno a las razones por las cuales César Moro escogió el mito de los Dioscuros para su poemario Amour à mort. En los párrafos que siguen se revisará las opiniones críticas de varios grupos de intelectuales que, a nuestro criterio, han aportado argumentos generales y específicos que proporcionan lucidez y debate en el camino hacia una de las posibles respuestas satisfactorias a la pregunta. En principio, los razonamientos críticos sobre la obra de Moro se remontan a los años en que el poeta logró publicar algunos poemarios en lengua francesa, continúan, con algunas intermitencias causadas por la escasa publicación de la obra del poeta, después de su fallecimiento, a lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo veinte, y prosiguen de manera consolidada durante las primeras décadas del siglo en curso, gracias a la mayor cantidad de publicaciones de su obra, a partir de 1980, y la celebración del centenario de su nacimiento en el 2003. En el párrafo final incorporaremos nuestra hipótesis de trabajo acerca del núcleo intratextual sobre el cual reside la elección del mito de los Dioscuros.

Abstract:
Les micro-expressions sont des expressions faciales brèves et subtiles qui apparaissent et disparaissent en une fraction de seconde. Ce type d'expressions reflèterait "l'intention réelle" de l'être humain. Elles ont été étudiées pour mieux comprendre les communications non verbales et dans un contexte médicale lorsqu'il devient presque impossible d'engager une conversation ou d'essayer de traduire les émotions du visage ou le langage corporel d'un patient. Cependant, détecter et reconnaître les micro-expressions est une tâche difficile pour l'homme. Il peut donc être pertinent de développer des systèmes d'aide à la communication exploitant les micro-expressions. De nombreux travaux ont été réalisés dans les domaines de l'informatique affective et de la vision par ordinateur pour analyser les micro-expressions, mais une grande majorité de ces méthodes repose essentiellement sur des méthodes de vision par ordinateur classiques telles que les motifs binaires locaux, les histogrammes de gradients orientés et le flux optique. Étant donné que ce domaine de recherche est relativement nouveau, d'autres pistes restent à explorer. Dans cette thèse, nous présentons une nouvelle méthodologie pour l'analyse des petits mouvements (que nous appellerons par la suite mouvements subtils) et des micro-expressions. Nous proposons d'utiliser la pyramide de Riesz, une approximation multi-échelle et directionnelle de la transformation de Riesz qui a été utilisée pour l'amplification du mouvement dans les vidéos à l'aide de l'estimation de la phase 2D locale. Pour l'étape générale d'analyse de mouvements subtils, nous transformons une séquence d'images avec la pyramide de Riesz, extrayons et filtrons les variations de phase de l'image. Ces variations de phase sont en lien avec le mouvement. De plus, nous isolons les régions d'intérêt où des mouvements subtils pourraient avoir lieu en masquant les zones de bruit à l'aide de l'amplitude locale. La séquence d'image est transformée en un signal ID utilisé pour l'analyse temporelle et la détection de mouvement subtils. Nous avons créé notre propre base de données de séquences de mouvements subtils pour tester notre méthode. Pour l'étape de détection de micro-expressions, nous adaptons la méthode précédente au traitement de certaines régions d'intérêt du visage. Nous développons également une méthode heuristique pour détecter les micro-événements faciaux qui sépare les micro-expressions réelles des clignotements et des mouvements subtils des yeux. Pour la classification des micro-expressions, nous exploitons l'invariance, sur de courtes durées, de l'orientation dominante issue de la transformation de Riesz afin de moyenner la séquence d'une micro-expression en une paire d'images. A partir de ces images, nous définissons le descripteur MORF (Mean Oriented Riesz Feature) constitué d'histogrammes d'orientation. Les performances de nos méthodes sont évaluées à l'aide de deux bases de données de micro-expressions spontanées
Micro-expressions are brief and subtle facial expressions that go on and off the face in a fraction of a second. This kind of facial expressions usually occurs in high stake situations and is considered to reflect a humans real intent. They have been studied to better understand non-verbal communications and in medical applications where is almost impossible to engage in a conversation or try to read the facial emotions or body language of a patient. There has been some interest works in micro-expression analysis, however, a great majority of these methods are based on classically established computer vision methods such as local binary patterns, histogram of gradients and optical flow. Considering the fact that this area of research is relatively new, much contributions remains to be made. ln this thesis, we present a novel methodology for subtle motion and micro-expression analysis. We propose to use the Riesz pyramid, a multi-scale steerable Hilbert transformer which has been used for 2-D phase representation and video amplification, as the basis for our methodology. For the general subtle motion analysis step, we transform an image sequence with the Riesz pyramid, extract and lifter the image phase variations as proxies for motion. Furthermore, we isolate regions of intcrcst where subtle motion might take place and mask noisy areas by thresholding the local amplitude. The total sequence is transformed into a ID signal which is used fo temporal analysis and subtle motion spotting. We create our own database of subtle motion sequences to test our method. For the micro-expression spotting step, we adapt the previous method to process some facial regions of interest. We also develop a heuristic method to detect facial micro-events that separates real micro-expressions from eye blinkings and subtle eye movements. For the micro-expression classification step, we exploit the dominant orientation constancy fom the Riesz transform to average the micro-expression sequence into an image pair. Based on that, we introduce the Mean Oriented Riesz Feature descriptor. The accuracy of our methods are tested in Iwo spontaneous micro-expressions databases. Furthermore, wc analyse the parameter variations and their effect in our results

Owning and operating airports is an expensive business. For many local governments and private corporations involved, the business of airport management can be extremely lucrative when the facility and the operation are effectively and efficiently administered. For the DoD, airport management is a huge expense. During this time of historic budget reductions, one wonders whether the existing portfolio of military airfields can be sustained. The U.S. Air Force portfolio of airfields currently in place in the European theater is the focus of this research project because the United States has an extensive and long-standing inventory of airfields there. Ultimately, this thesis asks whether significant strategic and political changes necessitate a different approach to U.S. military airport management in Europe. The U.S. Air Force should stay in Europe, but it should convert some of its heavy, main operating bases to more flexible, lighter installations for both economic and strategic reasons.

La mayoría de personas recurren al consumo de cigarrillos en búsqueda de placer y relajo para calmar la ansiedad. Es conocido que estos cigarrillos convencionales contienen aditivos químicos que agravan la salud de las personas. En el siguiente trabajo de investigación, se evaluó la implementación de un cigarrillo sin aditivos químicos hecho de la planta del mapacho, producto que es consumido en la selva peruana, que pueda ofrecer la misma experiencia que tiene una persona al consumir uno que si los tiene. Se presentará el modelo de negocio final del proyecto y las validaciones que se realizaron para cada cuadrante. Se realizaron diferentes experimentos con personas que consumían cigarrillos comerciales para validar si el producto era aceptado. Asimismo, nos dimos cuenta que el sabor menta era solicitado cuando ofrecíamos el producto en los experimentos por lo cual decidimos ofrecer este nuevo sabor. Luego de validaciones y experimentos realizados, se obtuvo un empaque final con dos presentaciones de cigarrillos: tradicional y menta. Las ventas de los productos finales se realizaron mediante la plataforma de Facebook y de manera directa con las personas que ya conocían el producto. Finalmente, a raíz de las ventas y los gastos realizados, se desarrolló los planes y las proyecciones a tres años de los presupuestos de las áreas de operaciones, recursos humanos, marketing, responsabilidad social empresarial y finanzas.
Most people recur to the consumption of cigarettes in search of pleasure and relaxation to calm the anxiety. It is known that these conventional cigarettes contain chemical additives that aggravate the health of people. In the following research work, the implementation of a cigarette without chemical additives made of the mapacho plant was evaluated, a product that is consumed in the Peruvian jungle, which can offer the same experience that a person has with a conventional cigarette. The final business model of the project and the validations that were made for each quadrant will be presented. Different experiments were carried out with people who smoke commercial cigarettes to validate if the product was accepted. Also, we realized that the mint flavor was requested when we offered the product in the experiments for which we decided to offer this new flavor. After validations and experiments, a final packaging was obtained with two presentations of cigarettes: traditional and mint. The sales of the final products were made through Facebook and directly with the people who already knew about the product. Finally, as a result of sales and expenses, plans and three-year projections of the budgets of the areas of operations, human resources, marketing, corporate social responsibility and finance were developed.

Though we live in an age of uncertainty, we are constantly surrounded by what is predictable and routine. What happens when the comfort of our understanding is questioned? This body of work developed out of my experimental curiosity and desire to merge the familiar with the unexpected. Incorporating furniture and found objects brings a level of familiarity to the viewer, but manipulating the usual and adding strange elements causes inquiry. All of the components are set up into narrative tableaus and every part is considerably important to the whole. The installation explores humor and fear related to the grotesque and the uncanny, exploring contradictory elements such as: anthropomorphic and foreign, vibrant and static, seductive and repulsive. Each scene reveals no answers but poses only questions, inviting the viewer to fully experience their surroundings and come up with their own conclusions. We often exist between the margins of the known and the unknown but our understanding of this existence is purely individual.

Programmets nyanser blir en skala från kännedom till bevittnande och byggnaden tar en självklar plats på begravningsplatsen och i samhället. För den som redan befinner sig i sorg har naturen ett allmängiltigt, tröstande värde. Växtlighet tränger sig in och minner om en tid då livet börjar om. Byggnaden är uppbruten för att bli ett landskap i sig och i mellanrummen kommer naturen in på ett påtagligt sätt. Utifrån går det att urskilja byggnadens signifikanta delar: Ugnshall, kylrum och byggnadens fem innergårdar. Siktlinjerna har varit mycket viktiga i projektet. Interiört för att känna en närhet till naturen och exteriört för att förbipasserande ska förstå krematoriets huvudsakliga delar; Kistans ankomst, dess färd från kylrum till ugn och slutligen som aska till en värdig förvaring i väntan på urnsättning.
The presence of death increases the value of life itself. In a society that hides away the end of life a crematory has a purpose to remind and reveal it to whoever wants to interact. The program of this building transforms into nuances at a scale from knowledge to witnessing. This crematory takes a prominent place at the cemetery and in the community. For those who are already in the mourning process, nature has a universal, comforting value. Vegetation intrudes into and reminds us of a time when life starts over. The building is scattered to become a landscape in itself. In the gaps nature grows. From outside the building’s significant parts can be distinguished: Furnace hall, cold store and the five courtyards of the building. Sight lines have been very important in the project. Internal to feel a closeness to nature and external to  make passers-by understand the typology’s main processes; The arrival of the coffin, its journey from the cold storage to the oven and finally the ash’s way to a dignified storage  for the urn until it has a permanent place.

Mors mystica es un estudio sobre los límites de la Modernidad. Estudiando el declive del feudalismo, se cuestionan los lindes –e incluso la validez misma– de las categorías de lo moderno y lo premoderno. Un análisis de las ontologías lingüísticas y las teorías de la subjetividad de los místicos mediterráneos e, hispanos en particular, permite sistematizar un paradigma alternativo de modernidad definido en simultánea oposición al feudalismo saliente y al incipiente individualismo del sujeto autónomo moderno. La existencia de esta cosmovisión al alba de la Modernidad triunfante desvela la complejidad histórica de un proceso que no es ni puramente secuencial ni impecablemente hermético; muestra, empero, que entre los siglos XI y XVII la identificación entre lo premoderno y el discurso teológico no es menos problemática que la de lo moderno y lo secularizante. Atendiendo a este concepto de mors mystica entendida como producción en negativo de una subjetividad ya no feudal, pero no exactamente moderna en sentido que habría de adoptar, el presente ensayo propone leer la predilección de la mística por el deceso como una original vía para propiciar la formación de subjetividades contraindividualistas. En el contexto del Bajomedievo y las Guerras Europeas de Religión, los místicos conciben un individuo definido mediante el acto de muerte –del ego– por amor al otro.

Leiris appréhende la poésie en fonction de la pensée obsédante de la mort, faisant de cette dernière le principal moteur de l'activité créatrice. Il voit dans sa tentative de définition de la poésie bien plus que dans sa propre création une façon de combattre cette obsession. La pensée de la mort entraîne donc une redéfinition de la poésie. L'ensemble de l'oeuvre peut alors être lue comme un métadiscours tendant à résoudre cette unique question : qu'est-ce que la poésie ? Cette quête conduit finalement l'auteur à considérer la poésie comme un "art sacré". A l'instar de toutes les religions, la poésie repose sur la négation de la mort. Si elle peut dans ce sens être qualifiée de religieuse, elle ne prend pas en compte toutefois l'existence de Dieu. Elle est "sacrée" dans le sens que lui donne Leiris ; par son exercice, l'homme peut parvenir à son salut : non pas vaincre, mais oublier la mort. In all his work, Michel Leiris apprehends poetry according to the obsessing thought of death, making this latter the driving force behind creative activity. It is in the attempt to define poetry much more than in the mere creation of it that Leiris sees a way of fighting this obsession. The thought of death thus involves a redefinition of poetry. The whole work of Leiris can be read as a metadiscourse treating of the poetic tool and tending to answer this single question : what is really poetry ? This search finally leads the author to consider poetry as a "sacred art". Like all forms of religions, poetry rests on the negation of death. Considering this, poetry may be described as religious, but this does not take into account the existence of God. Poetry is sacred in the sense given by Leiris ; through its practise, man can reach salvation : not by overcoming but by forgetting sovereign death. Thus, for Leiris, it is the darkness of death which helps clarify poetry

En uppdelning av aggression i instrumentell respektive reaktiv har bekräftats av tidigare forskning. Föreliggande studie bygger på 40 domar från Svea hovrätt där gärningsmännen blivit dömda för mord eller försök till mord. Huvudsyftet var att undersöka om reaktiva gärningsmän kunde skiljas från instrumentella gärningsmän med avseende på brottskaraktäristika, ålder, påföljd samt brottsrubricering. Syftet var också att undersöka samband mellan gärningsmannens påverkan av alkohol och/eller droger och gärningsmannens grad av planering, målinriktning, arousal, provokation från offret, samt gärningsmannens relation till offret. Två oberoende bedömare (föreliggande studies författare) genomförde kodningar utifrån Cornells kodningsguide för våldshandlingar. Resultatet visade att instrumentella gärningsmän kunde skiljas från reaktiva gärningsmän utifrån deras planering, målinriktning, arousal och relation till offret. Resultatet visade också på en hög interbedömarreliabilitet mellan bedömarna gällande samtliga brottskaraktäristika. Endast ett signifikant samband hittades mellan variabeln arousal och gärningsmannens påverkan av alkohol och/eller droger. En slutsats var att det gick att bedöma gärningsmannens aggression utifrån hovrättsdomar innehållande mord och försök till mord.

L' imaginaire de la mort en Occident est un outil de réflexion qui nous permet d'appréhender la mort comme "idée". Impensée, la mort n'est pas impensable, elle ne cesse de révéler son contenu, son "objet", dans les images qui perdurent et s'enrichissent sans cesse en fonction de l'évolution culturelle et sociale de la société occidentale. Louis-Vincent Thomas nous montre que la mort est aujourd'hui déniée, rejetée du social. C'est le déni qui rend la mort insignifiante et insignifiable. Avec l'évolution des techniques médicales, on ne meurt plus si facilement de mort, on peut rester enfermé dans des états intermédiaires qui sont pires que la mort. La mort est devenue mauvaise mort, surtout si elle ne tue pas vraiment. C'est pourquoi les revendications portent sur une mort certaine qui n'est plus seulement mais "meurtre de soi". Entre euthanasie et meurtre, le "tuer" se fait don de la mort, on se donne une mort certaine, en anticipant de mourir. Le don est de fait, recherche d'un sens pour signifier un événement, une expérience dont la signification se perd. La nécessité de signifier la mort est une revendication des vivants qui ont besoin pour se savoir en vie, de reconnaitre un autre état, celui de mort, bien distinct de celui du vivant. L'enjeu de la relation entre les morts et les vivants, c'est la mémoire. Les morts ont une fonction sociale, ils perdurent dans la mémoire des vivants, pour enraciner le sens de ce qui a été. Pour que cette survivance soit possible, il faut qu'ils meurent bien, d'une mort qui soit mémorisable. Le don de la mort est là, il montre que les images de la mort ont une fonction, différencier les deux états en les signifiant.

Dans un monde aux ressources limitées, le taux de production de nouveaux appareils homme-machine ne semble pas viable. La conception durable nécessite une réappropriation des matériaux existants, nous devons donc concevoir des interfaces modulaires, réutilisables, mais qui permettent de nouvelles techniques d'interaction. Nous pensons que la combinaison des puissances de différents périphériques grâce à la fusion de données peut permettre des interactions puissantes tout en prolongeant la durée de vie des matériaux électroniques. À mesure que la complexité des capteurs augmente, leur combinaison présente de nouveaux défis et opportunités, notamment en termes de puissance de calcul et de comportement des utilisateurs, que nous explorons dans ce document. Nous expliquons d'abord comment les travaux antérieurs menés dans différents sous-domaines d'interaction homme-machine s'intègrent dans la perspective de la fusion de données. Dans cette perspective, nous prenons en compte tous les aspects des dispositifs d'entrée pour définir le cadre auquel appartient cette thèse. La première étape consiste à manipuler les périphériques d'entrée pour fournir des informations significatives à fusionner. Nous montrons donc comment passer d'une source de données complexe, telle qu'un flux de caméra, à une simple information descriptive qui permet une fusion légère. Ensuite, nous séparons les avantages de la fusion de données multi-capteurs pour les espaces d'interaction en deux catégories; enrichir l'espace d'interaction et étendre l'espace d'interaction. Notre contribution aux espaces enrichis se concentre principalement sur les interfaces musicales où nous proposons une application de sonification de mouvement sur un appareil mobile et un mécanisme de retour d'information visuelle, le tout en utilisant une combinaison de capteurs. De plus, nous contribuons à une surface virtuellement étendue pour les interactions sur grand écran à l'aide d'un écran tactile portable et examinons l'appropriation de l'utilisateur dans ce nouvel espace d'interaction
The increasing variety of tasks which require human-computer interfaces result in the production of new and improved sensing devices and therefore causes the obsolescence of older technologies. In a world of limited resources, the production rate of new interaction devices is unsustainable. Sustainable design calls for re-appropriation of existing materials, so we need to design interfaces that are modular, re-usable, yet that allow new interaction techniques. We believe that combining the strength of different input devices through data fusion can enable powerful interactions while extending the lifespan of electronic materials. As the complexity of sensors increases, their combination presents new challenges and opportunities, notably in terms of computational power and user behavior, which we explore in this document. We first explain how previous work conducted in different sub-domains of human-computer interaction fit into the data fusion perspective. From this perspective, we take all aspects of input devices into consideration to define the framework to which this thesis belongs. The first step consists of handling input devices to provide meaningful information to be fused, so we demonstrate how to go from a complex data source such as a camera stream, to a small, descriptive bit of information that enables lightweight fusion. Then, we separate the benefits of multi-sensor data fusion for interaction spaces into two categories; enriching the interaction space and extending the interaction space. Our contribution to the enriched spaces mainly focuses on musical interfaces where we propose a movement sonification application on a mobile device and a visual feedback mechanism, all by using a combination sensors. Further, we contribute a virtually extended surface for large display interactions using a hand-held touchscreen and examine the user's appropriation to the new interaction space

The purpose of this study was to complete a series of photographs utilizing trees as metaphors. This series of photographs is composed into book form for possible publication. It presents the psychological and symbolic impact of trees in different environments and from different perspectives through the development of a unique style of creative composition. The format consists of text and photographs. This project develops a working definition of metaphors and an approach using trees as the medium to convey various symbolic and psychological references. Both associated and inferred types of symbolisms are used. This type of approach is not necessarily unique and has been evidenced in the work of such "populist" poets as Robert Frost and the late photographer-poet Gordon Parks. With the basic inventory of symbols and psychological reference associations, whole trees, parts of trees, and/or groups of trees are identified to illustrate through the photographic medium that metaphors do indeed exist and can be found in trees. Photographs are produced, edited and composed to produce not only pleasing aesthetics, but also to provide continuity throughout the series. Photographs vary in size, shape, contrast, and composition to provide variation in the format.

Existe um jogo de transgressão das interdições, e se trata de um jogo violento. "Essencialmente o campo do erotismo é o campo da violência".1 Acontece uma violação no ser fechado e distinto, separado na sua descontinuidade. Desprende-se de seu estado cotidiano, no mundo social e profano do trabalho, para entrar numa abertura de continuidade profunda, perdendo-se de si mesmo. La Petite Mort é como os franceses chamam o ápice erótico. Morro de não morrer. A questão que colocamos não é sobre uma vida no além, mas um mais além de vida. Não uma morte absoluta, se trata de uma pequena morte. Para Bataille, na pequena morte erótica se experimenta o impossível. Para Lacan é na morte simbólica que se encontra o real. A mesma experiência de ruptura atravessa os dois autores: o gozo. Não a morte do corpo, da carne, mas a morte do sujeito na dissolução das ilusões de um eu que se constitui como unidade. Encontramos no erotismo uma experiência de morte. Se gozar não é morrer seria, então, repetir uma morte que não nos matou?
Abstract : There is a game of transgressing prohibitions, and it is a violent game. "Essentially the field of eroticism is the field of violence". An infraction against the closed and distinctive human being, separated from its discontinuity, detaching himself from his everyday state in the social and profane world of work, to enter into a gap of deep continuity, losing himself . La Petite Mort is how the French call the erotic climax. I die by not dying! The question is not about a life hereafter, but life beyond. There is no absolute death, just a little death. For Bataille in small erotic death we experience the impossible. For Lacan it is in the symbolic death that we find realness. The same experience breaks through both of them : sexual rapture. Not the death of the body, the flesh, but the death of the individual by dissolving the illusions of a self unit. We find eroticism in a death experience. If sexual rapture is not dying, would it then repeat a death that did not kill us?

Abstract:
Previously for my M.A., I centered on the negative side of unhealthy foods and its effects on the body. It was my shout at the top of my lungs with my fist in the air against negative consequences of those foods. Though the passionate anger still burns, my focus is now aligned with a more personal approach. For my M.F.A. thesis, I will make use of hand drawn images to tell the story of my weight loss journey. Images will be from my memories of the reality of morbid obesity. They will progress from where I started up to when I lost 125 pounds. The images will be grossly exaggerated to more strongly express my emotion. The descriptions for each image will be recorded onto the drawings. They will be placed in different areas on each of the pages to avoid repetition. The images will be in color. The color palette will be derived from the posters I created for my M.A. project [image 8]. The bright, attention grabbing color palette will prove beneficial for the urgency of my story. The completed project will be a fully illustrated, color graphic novel. In 18 months time I lost 125 pounds, mostly on my own, with very little help. The right people came along at the right times. I did not have the popular reality TV show Biggest Loser, nor any personal trainers. I spent 7 months taking a kickboxing/ body-shaping class, I read dozens of books, and I changed what I ate. I accomplished this feat the old fashioned way: I worked my ass off. One of my life goals is to help others, who are willing, loose weight and exit their private hell. I want people to know that positive, healthy change, no matter the obstacle, is obtainable.

La "logique de la mort" nous a permis de passer à la "mort de l'homme" qui a été constatée par le structuralisme foucaldien. Puis la même logique nous a conduit à la menace de la "mort du monde", monde déjà mort comme création et proche de l'agonie comme monde-objet. La conclusion de l'ouvrage se fonde sur l'anti-nihilisme nietzschéen et sur une philosophie de la vie, conçue comme phénomène essentiellement "sacré"
We analyzed Nietzsche’s conception of the death of god. The atheist "of rigor" (Valadier) detected in this phenomenon different nihilisms (reactive, negative, passive, active). The "logic of death" gave us the possibility of thinking the "death of man", discovered by the structuralism of Foucault. Then the same logic brought us to the threat of the "death of the world", world already dead as a creation et near to agony as a world seen as an object. The conclusion of the work is founded on Nietzsche’s anti-nihilism and on a philosophy of life, which is seen as an essentially "sacred" phenomenon

La valeur diagnostique des signes traditionnels -absence de sentiment et de mouvement, de battement du cœur et de symptômes de la respiration, etc. - est critiquée par J. B. Winslow et J. J. Bruhier; le seul signe de la mort qu'ils considèrent comme certain est la putréfaction. Cette doctrine sceptique est fondée sur un recueil de cas de mort apparente et d'inhumation prématurée qui, pour la plupart, sont hérités des traditions littéraires et populaire, et réinterprétés comme "cas cliniques" par J. J. Bruhier. Elle est le résultat de la crise du modèle platonicien et chrétien, pour qui la mort était un simple instant, soit le moment où avait lieu la séparation de l'âme d'avec le corps. Au contraire, d'après la nouvelle médecine issue de la révolution scientifique, la mort va devenir le processus d'interruption progressive des sous-systèmes fonctionnels. Cette doctrine des signes de la mort nourrit une peur névrotique, celle d'être enterré vivant, qui devient, dans ces années, une véritable phobie collective. The second half of the eighteenth century saw the birth of the doctrine of the uncertainty of the signs of death within the medical sciences. The diagnostic value of traditional signs -absence of sensations and movement, cessation of heartbeats and breathing symptoms, etc. - is criticized by J. B. Winslow et J. J. Bruhier; the only sign of death that they deemed foolproof is putrefaction. This sceptical doctrine is based on a compilation of cases of apparent death and pre- mature burial which, for the most part, are derived from literary and popular traditions, are reinterpreted as "clinical cases" by J. J. Bruhier; it may also be seen as the result of a crisis within the platonic and christian model, for which death was a mere instant, that is, the instant when the soul separates from the body. On the contrary, according to the new medicine that emerged in the aftermath of the scientific revolu- tion, death was a process of progressive shutdown of the functional sub- systems. This doctrine amplifies a neurotic fear, that of being buried alive, which at that time became a fully-fledged collective phobia.
