Abstract This essay will explore the arrival, acquisition, and reception of Chinese ceramics within early modern South Asia, with a focus on the Mughal dynasty (r. 1526–1857) courtly context. The first step in placing South Asian ceramic collecting practices within the broader historical and geographic circulation of porcelains in the Gulf and Indian Ocean worlds is understanding the breadth and nature of South Asian collections. While the Safavid porcelain collections donated by Shah Abbas to Ardabil, and the massive Chinese porcelain collection of the Ottoman courts held today in Istanbul’s

This study analyzes porcelain fragments unearthed at multiple archaeological sites in Mexico City, formerly known as New Spain. A collection of 60 samples was successfully categorized into four different groups and analyzed based on the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) in conjunction with statistical methods. One of the groups included blue-and-white porcelains, which conclusively traced back to the renowned Jingdezhen kilns. Another blue-and-white group was attributed to the Zhangzhou kilns. Notably, it was determined that the Chinese white porcelains, distinguished by their lo

During the second half of the nineteenth century, collector Ernest Grandidier (1833-1912) reunited thousands of Chinese porcelains in his collection. The books produced after this material, La Céramique chinoise, are important pieces of evidence for the knowledge and taste of the collector, helping to chart the choices he made in the parisian art market. This paper aims to present aspects of current research regarding the perception of those objects by Grandidier, particularly the religious pieces. Much scholarship concerning the maritime ceramic-exchange networks between China and the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Indian Ocean worlds has concentrated on the importation of Chinese blue-and-white porcelains and local responses to these wares. Celadon ceramics, however, were among the earliest Chinese wares to be traded—and emulated—within these exchange systems. Foregrounding examples from the collection of the Freer Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, this article will consider textual evidence, manuscript paintings, archaeological finds, and extant objects, in

IntroductionIn March 2015, I visited the Lambing Flat Folk Museum (established 1967) in the “cherry capital of Australia”, the town of Young, New South Wales, in preparation for a student excursion. Like other Australian folk museums, this museum focuses on the ordinary and the everyday of rural life, and is heavily reliant on local history, local historians, volunteers, and donated objects for the collection. It may not sound as though the Lambing Flat Folk Museum (LFFM) holds much potential for a fashion curator, as fashion exhibitions have become high points of innovation in exhibition desi
