Abstract The convention of anonymous authorship, which was used by most high-status reviews and magazines, began to break down in the 1860s, led by the launch of Macmillan’s Magazine and the Fortnightly Review in 1859 and 1865 respectively. The discarding of anonymity by the Fortnightly was keyed into its rejection of any univocal editorial voice and/or political affiliation. John Morley (1838—1923), a future Liberal MP, who took over the editorship of the Fortnightly Review in January 1867, here outlines the arguments in favour of signed authorship.
