Willsky, Lydia. "The (Un)Plain Bible." Nova Religio 17, no. 4 (February 2013): 13–36. http://dx.doi.org/10.1525/nr.2014.17.4.13.

Abstract:
This article explores the phenomenon of nineteenth-century new religious movements as a reaction to the “plain Bible” religious culture of that era. The plain Bible thesis maintained that the Bible was clear in its meaning, persuasive in its message, and authoritative in all matters of truth. Through the examples of Joseph Smith, Mary Baker Eddy and Henry David Thoreau, this article illustrates how three religious innovators reacted against the plain Bible thesis by creating their own versions of scripture which, in turn, aided in creating or strengthening alternative forms of Christianity. With his Mormon scriptural canon, including The Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price, Smith combated the notion that the Bible was clear in meaning; with her sacred text Science and Health Eddy challenged the persuasiveness of the plain Bible; and with his manuscript Wild Fruits, Thoreau undermined the plain Bible’s singular authority. This article shows that many new religious movements were not outliers in nineteenth-century Christian culture but were in fact products of that culture, albeit reactionary ones.

Abstract:
In the history of American popular religion, the Latter-day Saints, or Mormons, have undergone a series of paradigmatic shifts in order to join the Christian mainstream, abandoning such controversial core doctrines and institutions as polygamy and the political kingdom of God. Mormon historians have played an important role in this metamorphosis, employing a version (if not perversion) of the Church-Sect Dichotomy to change the past in order to control the future, arguing, in effect, that founder Joseph Smith Jr’s erstwhile magical beliefs and practices gave way to a more “mature” and bible-based self-understanding which is then said to best describe the religion that he founded in 1830. However, an “esoteric approach” as Faivre and Hanegraaff understand the term has much to offer the study of Mormonism as an old, new religion and the basis for a more even methodological playing field and new interpretation of Mormonism as equally magical (Masonic) and biblical (Evangelical) despite appearances. This article will focus on early Mormonism’s fascination with and employment of ciphers, or “the coded word,” essential to such foundation texts as the Book of Mormon and “Book of Abraham,” as well as the somewhat contradictory, albeit colonial understanding of African character and destiny in these two hermetic works of divine inspiration and social commentary in the Latter-day Saint canonical tradition.

Abstract:

Abstract:
There is a puzzle about divine justice stemming from the fact that God seems required to judge on the basis of criteria that are vague. Justice is proportional, however, it seems God violates proportionality by sending those on the borderline of heaven to an eternity in hell. This is Ted Sider’s problem of Hell and Vagueness. On the face of things, this poses a challenge only to a narrow class of classical Christians, those that hold a retributive theory of divine punishment. We show that this puzzle can be extended to the picture of divine judgement and the afterlife found in Mormon theology. This is significant because at first glance, the Mormon picture of the afterlife looks like it fails to co-operate with Sider’s puzzle. In Mormon theology, there are not two afterlife states, but three: a low, a middle, and a high kingdom. There is no afterlife state quite like Hell, and the states that function similarly to Hell aren’t places of eternal suffering. We argue that appearances are misleading. While it may be true that no place in the Mormon afterlife is bad in the sense that its inhabitants suffer eternal bodily harm, it is true that many of the places in the Mormon afterlife are bad in the sense that their inhabitants lack access to significant goods. This allows Sider’s puzzle to re-engage as a puzzle about distributive Justice. After setting out this alternative version of the puzzle, we argue that Mormon theology has sufficient resources to reject proportionality as a constraint on divine judgment by adopting a nuanced version of universalism called escapism.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article features two versions of A Chapter from the History of Charles V written by Louis Xavier Auguet de Saint- Sylvain, Baron de los Valles. The original French version was published in 1835, while the Spanish translation appeared 1837. The text describes the background and the start of the First Carlist War in Spain in 1833–1835. The author was a confidant of Don Carlos, and so his book reflected the Carlist perspective. The author believes that the Spanish translation included certain semantic modifications and additions made due to fit the changing political situation. These almost imperceptible modifications were able to change the perception of some military and political figures of the era, e.g., former Minister F. T. Calomarde, Carlist general V. Gonzalez Moreno, Christino general and future Regent B. Espartero, etc. The research objective was to show how Baron de los Valles interpreted the events related to the capture of Villafranca by the Carlists in 1834. This historical episode, later popularized by numerous memoirs and fiction, appeared only in the Spanish version of the book. The account made by the Baron de los Valles differed from the versions of other memoirists, as well as from the official press reports. A Chapter from the History of Charles V by Baron de los Valles has a low value as a historical source, but presents a considerable interest as an example of Carlist propaganda during the war of 1833–1840.

Abstract:
Social Trinitarianism (ST) is a family of views that bear some resemblance to each other in a way that distinguishes them from other Trinitarian accounts. In this paper, we address recent objections by Carl Mosser against ST, objections which have not received much attention by defenders of ST. Mosser claims that proponents of ST offer a narrative that is historically inaccurate, employs concepts of personhood and perichoresis that are incompatible, upholds dubious hermeneutical assumptions, and is unable to preclude Mormon theology within its fold. We argue that all four criticisms fail, especially for a specific version of ST: Perichoretic Monotheism.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article grapples with ‘Let It Rain’, the title track of Bishop Paul S. Morton and the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship's 2003 release, which revises Michael Farren's contemporary Christian ballad by braiding it together with Prince's ‘Purple Rain’ and the formal logic of Black gospel tradition. As the Full Gospel version of this song commingles these seemingly discordant components, Morton, choir, and band turn a sung prayer into an assertion of interworldly presence. Building on its received musical materials, this gospel power ballad performs the Black gospel tradition's characteristic inflection – an arresting turn from one level of musicking to a heightened, ecstatic frame. In so doing, this song brings rain near, illuminating the links between performances of musical ecstasy and musical Blackness.

Abstract:
Nathaniel Hawthorne claims, in his brief preface to “The May-pole of Merry Mount,” that “the facts, recorded on the grave pages of our New England annalists, have wrought themselves, almost spontaneously,” into a “philosophical romance” and “a sort of allegory.” He later refers to these “true” and “authentic passages from history” as “a poet's tale.” Yet to anyone familiar with the sources available to Hawthorne,1 nothing is more striking than how much authentic history he has left out – most notably Thomas Morton himself, whose version of what transpired at his fur-trading post on Massachusetts Bay (New English Canaan) is indeed a tale told by a poet, albeit a minor one. What do we know about the man who put up the maypole that so outraged his pious neighbors? Who was Thomas Morton and why were the Puritans so offended by him? If his maypole symbolized the festive culture of Merry Old England, Morton epitomized its spirit. No wonder he was a persona non grata among the Puritans of New England, although Falstaff would have welcomed him to the Boar's Head Tavern. Like many a man of the Elizabethan Renaissance, he was enamored of classical learning and the New World; three times he abandoned London's Bankside to seek his fortune in Massachusetts Bay, at the risk of his life.

Abstract:
We introduce orbifold Euler numbers for normal surfaces with boundary $\mathbb{Q}$-divisors. These numbers behave multiplicatively under finite maps and in the log canonical case we prove that they satisfy the Bogomolov–Miyaoka–Yau type inequality. Existence of such a generalization was earlier conjectured by G. Megyesi [Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 78 (1999) 241–282]. Most of the paper is devoted to properties of local orbifold Euler numbers and to their computation. As a first application we show that our results imply a generalized version of R. Holzapfel's ‘proportionality theorem’ [Ball and surface arithmetics, Aspects of Mathematics E29 (Vieweg, Braunschweig, 1998)]. Then we show a simple proof of a necessary condition for the logarithmic comparison theorem which recovers an earlier result by F. Calderón-Moreno, F. Castro-Jiménez, D. Mond and L. Narváez-Macarro [Comment. Math. Helv. 77 (2002) 24–38].Then we prove effective versions of Bogomolov's result on boundedness of rational curves in some surfaces of general type (conjectured by G. Tian [Springer Lecture Notes in Mathematics 1646 (1996) 143–185)]. Finally, we give some applications to singularities of plane curves; for example, we improve F. Hirzebruch's bound on the maximal number of cusps of a plane curve.2000 Mathematical Subject Classification: 14J17, 14J29, 14C17.

Abstract:
Different studies around the world indicate that the percentages of overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence are high. In this context, it would be useful to have a common, valid, and reliable instrument to assess health behaviors of families that allows comparisons of data from different countries. The objective is the adaptation of a Spanish version of the Family Health Behavior Scale (FHBS). The questionnaire originally developed by Moreno group was translated and adapted following the International Test Commission protocol. Its psychometric properties were evaluated through analysis of internal consistency, factor analysis and other evidences of validity. The Spanish version of the FHBS demonstrated adequate reliability coefficients, and its factor structure sufficiently replicated that obtained by the original measurement. The results suggested that the adapted version of the questionnaire was an adequate and valid measure for the evaluation of family health behaviors related to the prevention of overweight and obesity.

Abstract:
Electronic health records contain the patient’s sensitive information. If these data are acquired by a malicious user, it will not only cause the pilferage of the patient’s personal data but also affect the diagnosis and treatment. One of the most challenging tasks in cloud-based healthcare systems is to provide security and privacy to electronic health records. Various probabilistic data structures and watermarking techniques were used in the cloud-based healthcare systems to secure patient’s data. Most of the existing studies focus on cuckoo and bloom filters, without considering their throughputs. In this research, a novel cloud security mechanism is introduced, which supersedes the shortcomings of existing approaches. The proposed solution enhances security with methods such as fragile watermark, least significant bit replacement watermarking, class reliability factor, and Morton filters included in the formation of the security mechanism. A Morton filter is an approximate set membership data structure (ASMDS) that proves many improvements to other data structures, such as cuckoo, bloom, semi-sorting cuckoo, and rank and select quotient filters. The Morton filter improves security; it supports insertions, deletions, and lookups operations and improves their respective throughputs by 0.9× to 15.5×, 1.3× to 1.6×, and 1.3× to 2.5×, when compared to cuckoo filters. We used Hadoop version 0.20.3, and the platform was Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6; we executed five experiments, and the average of the results has been taken. The results of the simulation work show that our proposed security mechanism provides an effective solution for secure data storage in cloud-based healthcare systems, with a load factor of 0.9. Furthermore, to aid cloud security in healthcare systems, we presented the motivation, objectives, related works, major research gaps, and materials and methods; we, thus, presented and implemented a cloud security mechanism, in the form of an algorithm and a set of results and conclusions.

AbstractIn 1960, Morton Smith announced that he had discovered in the Mar Saba monastery tower library a fragment of a previously unknown letter of Clement of Alexandria containing excerpts from a longer version of the Gospel of Mark that Smith called the 'Secret Gospel of Mark'. Controversial since its publication in 1973, this discovery has recently been criticized in print as both an academic hoax and a malicious forgery. This paper uses newly discovered manuscript photographs and archived documents to refute a claim found in Stephen C. Carlson's The Gospel Hoax, namely that Smith invented a pseudonymous twentieth-century individual named 'M. Madiotes' as an elaborate and deliberate clue that he himself had forged the letter of Clement.

Abstract:
In 1995, a local version of the American Forests big trees program (Treemendous Trees) was initiated in the Chicago area by Openlands Project and the Morton Arboretum. In addition to the numerical information about tree sizes required on the nomination form, many participants attached notes and sometimes lengthy letters that detailed various aspects of the nominated trees. A qualitative analysis of these written materials identified a number of recurrent themes that sometimes went far beyond the physical size dimensions to describe aesthetic and functional values, and symbolic and emotional meanings. This information may help urban foresters better understand the breadth and depth of values people have for urban trees—particularly large ones. Results also have implications for obtaining more and better information from big tree programs, and for using these programs as vehicles for developing collaborative partnerships between urban foresters and citizens in knowledge discovery and sharing.

Abstract:
In this paper, we make partial progress on a function field version of the dynamical uniform boundedness conjecture for certain one-dimensional families ${\mathcal{F}}$ of polynomial maps, such as the family $f_{c}(x)=x^{m}+c$, where $m\geq 2$. We do this by making use of the dynatomic modular curves $Y_{1}(n)$ (respectively $Y_{0}(n)$) which parametrize maps $f$ in ${\mathcal{F}}$ together with a point (respectively orbit) of period $n$ for $f$. The key point in our strategy is to study the set of primes $p$ for which the reduction of $Y_{1}(n)$ modulo $p$ fails to be smooth or irreducible. Morton gave an algorithm to construct, for each $n$, a discriminant $D_{n}$ whose list of prime factors contains all the primes of bad reduction for $Y_{1}(n)$. In this paper, we refine and strengthen Morton’s results. Specifically, we exhibit two criteria on a prime $p$ dividing $D_{n}$: one guarantees that $p$ is in fact a prime of bad reduction for $Y_{1}(n)$, yet this same criterion implies that $Y_{0}(n)$ is geometrically irreducible. The other guarantees that the reduction of $Y_{1}(n)$ modulo $p$ is actually smooth. As an application of the second criterion, we extend results of Morton, Flynn, Poonen, Schaefer, and Stoll by giving new examples of good reduction of $Y_{1}(n)$ for several primes dividing $D_{n}$ when $n=7,8,11$, and $f_{c}(x)=x^{2}+c$. The proofs involve a blend of arithmetic and complex dynamics, reduction theory for curves, ramification theory, and the combinatorics of the Mandelbrot set.

Abstract:
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the largest and arguably best-known branch of the Restoration movement begun by Joseph Smith, sustains a complex but living relationship to nineteenth-century marginal millenarianism and apocalypticism. At the foundations of this relationship is a consistent interest in the biblical Book of Revelation exhibited in the earliest Latter-Day Saint scriptural texts. The Book of Mormon (1830) affirms that apocalyptic visionary experiences like John’s in the New Testament have occurred throughout history and even contains a truncated account of such a vision. It also predicts the emergence in late modernity of a fuller and uncorrupted account of such an apocalyptic vision, with the aim of clarifying the biblical Book of Revelation. In addition, however, Smith received an apocalyptic vision of his own in 1832 and produced a vision report that suggests that he understood The Book of Mormon’s anticipations of apocalyptic clarification to come as much through ecstatic experience as through the emergence of new apocalyptic texts. In 1842, Smith created a ritualized version of his own apocalyptic experience, a temple liturgy that remains authoritative into the present. This lies behind the moderate apocalypticism of twenty-first century Latter-Day Saint religious experience.

AbstractThere are no direct methods to measure the boundary condition at the base of a glacier. Here, we propose a method that works by iteratively changing boundary conditions until a satisfactory fit to surface observations is obtained. The method is an accelerated version of one known as Kozlov–Maz’ya iteration. We apply it to the problem of ice flow through a transverse cross-section, and show it to be effective by solving the inverse problem for a sequence of synthetic data. We also apply the method to two real glaciers, Athabasca and Perito Moreno, one of which has a known basal velocity distribution.

Abstract: The current study tries to replicate the psychometric results proposed by Moreno et al. (2007) for the Spanish Version of the Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire-2 in Mexican university students. A total of 533 Mexican university students participated in this study (M = 20.99 and SD = 2.61 years). The factor structure of the questionnaire was conducted by confirmatory factor analyses, which showed a feasible and adequate four-factor structure. The four factors (intrinsic regulation, identified regulation, introjected regulation, and external regulation), attending to statistical and substantive criteria, have shown fit indices of reliability and validity; despite not fully coinciding with the model propose by Moreno et al., the obtained model continues giving support to the multifactorial component of motivation towards the exercise. Moreover, the factor structure, loads, and the intercepts were considered as invariables between women and men, obtaining differences in the punctuations of factor intrinsic regulation. Future research should replicate these findings in wider samples.

This article looks at how criminal agents aim to gain legitimacy within the context of the War on Drugs in Mexico. More precisely, it explores the narrative of legitimization presented in Me dicen “el más loco”, an autobiography of Nazario Moreno González, the leader of the criminal organization La Familia Michoacana. A cultural-studies approach is used to argue that the book combines a Christian version of the social-bandit myth with the narrative strategies of the picaresque novel to legitimize the activities of the group. This article aims to contribute to the larger debate on the powerful imaginary dimension of organized crime in Mexico.

Abstract:
1557 Background: Peripheral neuropathy (PN), a common and intrusive side effect of chemotherapy in clinical trials, has been assessed via the clinician-rated common terminology criteria for adverse events (CTCAE) and/or patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures (Morton, ASCO, 2005). We assessed the relative sensitivity of CTCAE and PRO measures for evaluating interventions for preventing and ameliorating CIPN. Methods: Data from285 patients in two prevention trials (N05C3, N04C7) and 432 patients from three intervention trials (N00C3, N01C3, N06CA) were analyzed separately. CTCAE version 3.0 item for neuropathy was compared to 2 NCCTG numerical analogue CIPN items, 6 EORTC CIPN20 individual items, 2 McGill Pain Questionnaire items, and one Brief Pain Inventory item. The sample size provided over 80% power to detect a true Spearman rank correlation of 0.15 assessed the relationship between CTCAE and PRO measures. Results: Results from both the prevention and treatment trials were similar in terms of the relationship between the CTCAE and PRO measures. No correlation coefficients between the CTCAE and any of the PRO items at baseline were above 0.35, with the majority around 0.2. Higher scores for the numbness items were observed than for the CTCAE in 47% of the patients at baseline and 39% during treatment in the treatment trials. Many patients had severe numbness PRO scores but mild CTCAE scores (12%) at baseline and (8%) during treatment in the treatment trials. Results for the numbness and tingling PRO measures were redundant. The correlations of the CTCAE with pain were weak, all below 0.35 at baseline with differences as much as 29 points on average on a 0-100 transformed scale. Conclusions: The CTCAE and PRO measures of PN measure different constructs. The CTCAE includes both functional and ADL/motor aspects which may or may not be related to the singular constructs of pain, numbness, tingling, or adjectival characteristics of pain assessed by the PRO measures. The two measures cannot be used in place of each other.

Abstract:
In this paper, we wish to push the limit of real-time cloth and deformable body simulation to a higher level with 50K to 500K vertices, based on the development of a novel GPU-based multilevel additive Schwarz (MAS) pre-conditioner. Similar to other preconditioners under the MAS framework, our preconditioner naturally adopts multilevel and domain decomposition concepts. But contrary to previous works, we advocate the use of small, non-overlapping domains that can well explore the parallel computing power on a GPU. Based on this idea, we investigate and invent a series of algorithms for our preconditioner, including multilevel domain construction using Morton codes, low-cost matrix precomputation by one-way Gauss-Jordan elimination, and conflict-free symmetric-matrix-vector multiplication in runtime preconditioning. The experiment shows that our preconditioner is effective, fast, cheap to precompute and scalable with respect to stiffness and problem size. It is compatible with many linear and nonlinear solvers used in cloth and deformable body simulation with dynamic contacts, such as PCG, accelerated gradient descent and L-BFGS. On a GPU, our preconditioner speeds up a PCG solver by approximately a factor of four, and its CPU version outperforms a number of competitors, including ILU0 and ILUT.

Abstract:
Occupational hardiness is a pattern of attitudes and strategies that stimulates an individual to perceive stressful work situations as controllable, worth dealing with, and contributing to professional development. One of the popular tools in the world to measure this construct is the Occupational Hardiness Questionnaire (OHQ) developed by Moreno-Jiménez et al. It has a three-factor structure, proven construct validity, and good internal consistency. The overarching aim of the study was to prepare a Polish adaptation of the OHQ based on a sample of Polish employees working in health care, education and science, and customer service. The questionnaire-based research was conducted in two stages, with two independent samples. The first study was cross-sectional. Their results were used to estimate the factorial validity, construct validity, and internal consistency of the adapted tool. Participants in the first study were 1,212 employees (originally 1,315) of health care (n = 400), education and science (n = 410), and customer service (n = 400) sectors. The second study, which was longitudinal in nature, included two measurements and was used to estimate test–retest reliability. Of the 400 participants (employees of customer service), 205 completed the questionnaire in two measurements. The Polish version of the OHQ has a three-factor structure, confirmed construct validity and good internal consistency. The Polish version of the OHQ is ideal for scientific research, but can also be used in practice: in career counseling, recruitment, selection, or screening.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and frequency of perpetration and victimization of different types of dating violence (DV), among adolescents from 13 to 19 years old in five capital cities of Colombia (Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Ibagué, Tunja, and Yopal), making comparisons by sex. The Spanish version of the Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationships Inventory was used and various statistical analyses, including the one-way MANOVA, were performed. The results show a high prevalence of DV, particularly verbal/emotional and bi-directional (almost 90 % of the participants), pointing out that sex could have a statistically significant effect on the prevalence of the different types of DV, being higher the proportion of men who perpetrated sexual violence and higher the proportion of women who perpetrated verbal/emotional and physical violence. These results indicate the need to continue investigating the phenomenon in Colombia, to carry out different prevention campaigns that are sensitive to differences by sex in prevalence. Abstract:
Abstract. Model intercomparison experiments are widely used to investigate and improve hydrological model performance. However, a study based only on runoff simulation is not sufficient to discriminate between different model structures. Hence, there is a need to improve hydrological models for specific streamflow signatures (e.g., low and high flow) and multi-variable predictions (e.g., soil moisture, snow and groundwater). This study assesses the impact of model structure on flow simulation and hydrological realism using three versions of a hydrological model called MORDOR: the historical lumped structure and a revisited formulation available in both lumped and semi-distributed structures. In particular, the main goal of this paper is to investigate the relative impact of model equations and spatial discretization on flow simulation, snowpack representation and evapotranspiration estimation. Comparison of the models is based on an extensive dataset composed of 50 catchments located in French mountainous regions. The evaluation framework is founded on a multi-criterion split-sample strategy. All models were calibrated using an automatic optimization method based on an efficient genetic algorithm. The evaluation framework is enriched by the assessment of snow and evapotranspiration modeling against in situ and satellite data. The results showed that the new model formulations perform significantly better than the initial one in terms of the various streamflow signatures, snow and evapotranspiration predictions. The semi-distributed approach provides better calibration–validation performance for the snow cover area, snow water equivalent and runoff simulation, especially for nival catchments.

Abstract:
Cognitive flexibility follows a protracted developmental trajectory [Morton, J. B. Understanding genetic, neurophysiological, and experiential influences on the development of executive functioning: The need for developmental models. Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Cognitive Science, 2010]. For example, performance and patterns of brain activity associated with the dimensional change card sort (DCCS) show continued age-related changes into early adolescence. According to many theoretical accounts, the DCCS places demands on a single underlying executive process. In the present study, we investigated the possibility that multiple processes unfold within the timeframe of a single DCCS trial through the use of ERPs. Children (n = 40), adolescents (n = 20), and adults (n = 20) performed a modified version of the DCCS with distinct instruction cue- and stimulus-related periods. On any particular trial, the sorting rule either changed (i.e., switch trials) or remained the same (i.e., repeat trials), and the imperative stimulus either embodied conflict (i.e., bivalent stimuli) or did not (i.e., univalent stimuli). Findings were consistent with the hypothesis that multiple distinct executive processes unfold within a single trial. First, for all age groups, rule switching and conflict processing made additive contributions to variability in RT. Second, ERPs time-locked to the instruction cue revealed a late frontal negativity whose amplitude was greater for switch trials relative to repeat trials and that was associated with the magnitude of the behavioral switch cost, whereas ERPs time-locked to the imperative stimulus revealed a fronto-central N2 whose amplitude was greater for bivalent than univalent stimuli and that was associated with the magnitude of the behavioral conflict cost. Finally, switch and conflict-related processes showed distinct developmental trajectories. Taken together, the findings suggest that multiple executive processes underlie DCCS performance and its development. Theoretical implications are discussed.

Abstract:
Inspired by the attempt to disrupt data gathering and asking ourselves about “spam” digital practices as forms of resistance, the project SPAM (An)Archive brought together the work of the (post)composer and media artist Óscar Escudero and the collective SoundTrieb, whose collaboration took place digitally via Zoom and physically in Switzerland in 2021. Escudero’s collaborative work in the last few years with the (post)composer and musicologist Belenish Moreno-Gil has been fruitful at a sociological and cultural level of analysis, beyond music aesthetics, as they both deal with social networks and digital behavior in their music theater compositions. Using Facebook as a digital stage, SoundTrieb’s version of [Custom #2] (a digital melodrama) allowed performers to develop a double personalization of the piece, intervening their own social media profiles. This paper does not intend to discuss a theoretical approach to these artworks, but their subversive capability. Through a cultural analysis approach, this article recognizes the critical potential against the architecture of digital surveillance that they can achieve, while drawing attention to our complacency to ubiquitous technologies. For this purpose, I introduce notions such as DIY music and coded representation, but I also borrow concepts such as Brigitta Muntendorf’s social composing and Escudero’s spam art. This paper explores, through work examples by all the above-mentioned artists, recent models of compositional work that blur the line between the digital and the physical, the virtual and the real, the private and the public.

Abstract:
Abstract Vitalism was long viewed as the most grotesque view in biological theory: appeals to a mysterious life-force, Romantic insistence on the autonomy of life, or worse, a metaphysics of an entirely living universe. In the early twentieth century, attempts were made to present a revised, lighter version that was not weighted down by revisionary metaphysics: “organicism”. And mainstream philosophers of science criticized Driesch and Bergson’s “neovitalism” as a too-strong ontological commitment to the existence of certain entities or “forces”, over and above the system of causal relations studied by mechanistic science, rejecting the weaker form, organicism, as well. But there has been some significant scholarly “push-back” against this orthodox attitude, notably pointing to the 18th-century Montpellier vitalists to show that there are different historical forms of vitalism, including how they relate to mainstream scientific practice (Wolfe and Normandin, eds. 2013). Additionally, some trends in recent biology that run counter to genetic reductionism and the informational model of the gene present themselves as organicist (Gilbert and Sarkar 2000, Moreno and Mossio 2015). Here, we examine some cases of vitalism in the twentieth century and today, not just as a historical form but as a significant metaphysical and scientific model. We argue for vitalism’s conceptual originality without either reducing it to mainstream models of science or presenting it as an alternate model of science, by focusing on historical forms of vitalism, logical empiricist critiques thereof and the impact of synthetic biology on current (re-)theorizing of vitalism.

Abstract:
Clausena lansium, also known as wampee (Clausena wampi), is a plant species native to China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, where it is widely cultivated, and also grown in India, Sri Lanka, Queensland, Florida, and Hawaii, but less frequently (3). The fruit can be consumed fresh or made into juice, jam, or succade. In summer to fall 2014, a soft rot disease was found in a wampee planting region in Yunan County, Guangdong Province, China. On Sept. 18, we collected diseased samples from a wampee orchard with about 20% disease incidence. The infected fruit initially showed pinpoint spots on the peel, water-soaked lesions, and light to dark brown discoloration. Spots expanded in 2 days, and tissues collapsed after 5 days. Severely affected fruit showed cracking or nonodorous decay. Five diseased samples were collected, and causal agents were isolated from symptomatic tissues 1 cm under the peel after surface sterilization in 0.3% NaOCl for 10 min and rinsing in sterile water three times. Tissues were placed on a Luria Bertani (LB) plate for culture. Ten representative isolates were selected for further characterization. No colony was isolated from healthy tissues. Colonies were round, smooth, with irregular edges, and produced a yellow pigment in culture. Biolog identification (Version 4.20.05) showed that all strains were gram negative, negative for indole production, and utilized glucose, maltose, trehalose, sucrose, D-lactose, and pectin but not sorbitol or gelatin. The isolates were identified as Pantoea agglomerans (SIM 0.69). Multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) was conducted for rapid classification of the strains. Sequences of atpD, gyrB, infB, and rpoB were amplified using corresponding primers (2). All sequences of the 10 isolates were identical in each gene. BLASTn was performed, and maximum likelihood trees based on the concatenated nucleotide sequences of the four genes were constructed using MEGA6. Bootstrap values after 1,000 replicates were expressed as percentages. Results showed that the tested strain named CL1 was most homologous to P. anthophila, with 98% identity for atpD (KM521543), 100% for gyrB (KM521544), infB (KM521545), and rpoB (KM521546). The 16S rRNA sequence (KM521542) amplified by primers 27f and 1492r shared 99% identity with that of P. anthophila M19_2C (JN644500). P. anthophila was previously reclassified from P. agglomerans (3); therefore, we suggest naming this wampee pathogen P. anthophila. Subsequently, 10 wampee fruits were injected with 20 μl of bacterial suspension (1 × 108 CFU/ml) of strains CL1 and CL2, respectively, and another 10 were injected with 20 μl of LB medium as controls, all kept at 28°C for 4 days. Symptoms similar to those of natural infections were observed on inoculated fruits but not on the negative controls. Bacteria were isolated from diseased tissues and further identified as P. anthophila by gyrB sequencing. P. anthophila was reported to naturally infect balsam and marigold (1,2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. anthophila naturally causing soft rot disease and cracking on C. lansium (wampee). References: (1) C. Brady et al. Syst. Appl. Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: The generation of the immune response requires the recognition of peptides presented by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) through the T cell receptor (TCR). In the hematopoietic transplantation context, T cells (LT) from the donor recognize foreign MHC or own MHC bound to foreign peptides (pMHC), generating an alloimmune response. Currently, the molecular mechanisms of LT alloimmune activation are unknown. In order to analyze the molecular interactions between peptides, MHC and TCR, we have implemented Molecular Dynamics techniques. We have compared immunologically reactive complexes (HLA-A2/TAX/TCR-A6) to non/weakly reactive complexes (HLA-A2/V7R/TCR-A6; HLA-A2/P6A/TCR-A6; HLA-A2/Y8A/TCR-A6). Methods: Starting structure of a reactive complex was downloaded from the PDB database and used to model mutations known to lead to different degrees of immune reactivity. Dynamics simulations were performed and analyzed using the program AMBER version 9. The simulation time was approximately 10 ns. Further analysis was carried out using the script ARO (Díaz-Moreno et al. 2009) in the VMD Tk console. Results: A total of 10 MD trajectories have been reckoned, to simulate the behavior of isolated components of the different pMHC-TCR complexes. Analysis of the fluctuations show that pMHC binding barely restrains TCR motions, affecting mostly to CDR3 loops. Opposite, pMHC displayed substantial changes in its dynamics upon comparing its free versus ternary form (pMHC-TCR). Moreover, we studied the salt-bridges formed between peptide and MHC and we observed a significant loss of salt-bridges in non reactive complexes as compared to reactive ones. Furthermore, the loss of salt-bridges in non reactive complexes affects the electrostatic potential of pMHC complex. According to these results, we next studied the salt-bridges formed between pMHC and TCR. As observed within the binary complex p-MHC, we confirmed a significant loss of salt-bridges in non reactive as compared to reactive complex. Finally, we also analyzed the electrostatic potential of pMHC-TCR complexes and we observed differences between reactive complex and weakly/non reactive complexes. Conclusions: The MHC shows strong changes in its molecular dynamics upon binding to TCR, decreasing its mobility. The “pattern” of salt-bridges between the peptides and the MHC varies depending on the reactivity of the complex, with a loss of salt-bridges in the non-reactive as compared to the reactive ones, which results in change in the electrostatic pattern. In addition, also the number of salt-bridges between pMHC and TCR increases in reactive complexes as compared to non-reactive ones. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Opposite, pMHC displayed substantial changes in its dynamics upon comparing its free versus ternary form (pMHC-TCR). Furthermore, taking as reference the positions of the MHC´s helices in free binary structures (MHC-peptide) and comparing them to the positions in ternary structures (pMHC-TCR), we can observe that in reactive complexes MHC exhibits a higher variability than in non-reactive complexes, suggesting that the MHC must tighten and acquire a position further away from its position in free binary form. We also analyzed the position of the peptide in the groove of MHC and we found that at position 5 (aa aromatic) the peptide is diverted although its position in the groove of MHC seems to be unrelated to the reactivity of the interaction TCR-pMHC. Conclusions The MHC shows strong changes in its molecular dynamics upon binding TCR, decreasing its mobility. The structure of MHC is slightly perturbed in reactive complexes, but not in non-reactive ones. Abstract:
Abstract Background: SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines have been demonstrated to have robust and durable humoral immune response in healthy individuals. However, their effectiveness in immunocompromised patients, particularly cancer patients, remains less known. Newer data suggests that cancer patients may not mount adequate protective immune response after vaccination. Methods: A retrospective study of patients ≥ 18 years old who had SARS-CoV-2 spike antibody (anti-S Ab) testing after 2 doses of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines between 12-90 days at Mayo Clinic between January 1, 2021 and May 10, 2021 was performed. The Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (Roche Diagnostics, Switzerland) was used to measure the antibody response. Patients with prior COVID-19 infection and patients on immunosuppressive therapy for an indication other than cancer were excluded. Categorical variables were summarized as frequencies (percentages) and continuous variables were reported as median with range. Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare continuous variables between groups and Chi-squared or Fisher’s exact test was used to compare categorical variables. All tests were two-sided with p value < 0.05 considered statistically significant. The analysis was done using R program version 3.6.2. Results: Among 201 patients, 79 had breast cancer, 91 had a hematologic malignancy, 6 had other solid malignancies, and 25 had no history of cancer. All breast cancer patients on endocrine therapy or trastuzumab ± pertuzumab without chemotherapy (n=35) had anti-S Ab titer ≥ 500 U/mL. Patients on cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6i) appeared to have low level of anti-S Ab with 28.6% (n=4/14) had anti-S Ab titer ≤ 500 U/mL. Patients on chemotherapy also had low levels of anti-S Ab with 47% (n=14/30) having anti-S Ab titers ≤ 500 U/mL. When combining breast cancer patients on endocrine therapy alone or anti-HER2 therapy with patients without history of cancer as an immunocompetent group, there was significantly greater proportion of immunocompetent patients (97%) who had anti-S Ab titer ≥ 500 U/mL compared with only 8% of patients with hematologic malignancy and 55% of patients with solid malignancy on chemotherapy or CDK4/6i (p < 0.001). Using multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, gender, and vaccine type, patients with solid malignancies and treatment-related cytopenia, including chemotherapy and CDK4/6i, (OR 35.51 [95%CI 8.38-255.25, p < 0.001]) were more likely than immunocompetent patients to have a suboptimal anti-S Ab results ≤ 500 U/mL.Conclusion: A significant number of breast cancer patients on chemotherapies and CDK4/6i had poor humoral responses after SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination. While CDK4/6i is not commonly considered as immunosuppressive therapy, breast cancer patients on CDK4/6i appeared to have suboptimal response to SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine. Our study also highlights the significance of assessing antibody response after COVID-19 vaccines in these vulnerable patients. Citation Format: Saranya Chumsri, Pooja P. Abstract:
Over the past 30 years, the prevalence of allergic diseases has doubled every 10 years. According to WHO, currently about 5% of the world's adult population and 15% of children suffer from allergic diseases. The purpose of the study is to analyze the assortment of antihistamines in the pharmaceutical market of Ukraine, determine the availability for consumers by the indicator of Ca.s. and their volumes of consumption by ATS/DDD-methodology during 2014‒2017. Represented in the pharmaceutical market of Ukraine antihistamines were analyzed according to the analytical system of research of the pharmaceutical market «Pharmstandard» of the company «MORION». As an indicator of socio-economic accessibility of antihistamines, an indicator of the adequacy of the solvency of Ca.s. Volumes of consumption of antihistamines were examined using the WHO recommended ATC/DDD methodology. Information on the DDD values is available on the WHO website: www.who.int/countries/ukr. During the period under study, there was a decrease in the number of TNs against the background of an increase in the number of INNs of all three generations. The quantitative ratio of domestic and foreign producers has not changed significantly. Based on the results of the Ca.s. found that antihistamines for the population of Ukraine for all four years are mainly high-availability drugs. And only 14.29% of fexofenadine preparations (in 2014) and 3.22% of desloratadine preparations (in 2015) are medium-accessible. The low indicator of the adequacy of solvency (Ca.s.) to 5%, confirms the availability of drugs group R06 and guarantees their consumption in the face of a decline in economic development in Ukraine. The most consumed during the studied four years were LS of five INNs: Mebrogroline, Cetirizine, Loratadine, Levocetirizine and Desloratadine, related to all three generations of antihistamines. Consumption of this group of the most used drugs during the study period was 89.94%, 90.64%, 90.70% and 90.47%, respectively, over the years of total consumption of antihistamines. During 2014‒2017 there is a decrease in the number of TN drugs against the background of an increase in the number of INN: from 172 TN on the basis of 16 INN in 2014 to 160 TN on the basis of 17 INNs in 2017. The quantitative ratio of domestic and foreign producers has not changed significantly. The assortment of antihistamine drugs for 2017 is quite wide. On the pharmaceutical market of Ukraine are represented drugs of all three generations. Depending on the manufacturer, the prices varied from low to high, namely the spread of prices from 1.65 UAH to 212.43 UAH in 2014 and from 4.76 UAH to 567.63 UAH in 2017, which made it possible to select individual drugs taking into account the active ingredients, dosage form and price. According to the results of the Ca.s indices, it is established that antihistamines for the population of Ukraine for the entire four years are represented mainly by high-availability TN. According to the analysis of the consumption of antihistamines in DDDs/1000 inhabitants/day, the increase in the consumption of these drugs was observed every year from 9.64 in 2014 to 10.60 in 2017. At the same time, the consumption of the latest generation drugs increased: INN desloratadine (from 0.98 in 2014 to 1.27 in 2017) and INN levocetirizine (from 1.91 in 2014 to 2.53 in 2017), which have profitable pharmacokinetic characteristics and the optimal efficiency / safety ratio. The consumption of second-generation drugs remains stably large: loratadine (2.62 in both 2014 and 2017), cetirizine (from 1.78 in 2014 to 1.94 in 2017). Along with sufficiently high pharmacological activity, they have a relatively low cost, since they are mainly presented in the pharmaceutical market in the form of generic versions. Against the background of the trend of increasing consumption of antihistamines in Ukraine over the last four years (from 9.64 DDDs/1000 inhabitants/day in 2014 to 10.60 DDDs/1000 inhabitants/day in 2017), it is established that in Ukraine there is a large number patients who do not receive in full, or do not receive quality adequate antihistamine therapy at all.

Marrow collections substantially diluted with peripheral blood may, however, compromise the GVHD-sparing effect of G-BM. Concerns over the variability in the quality of bone marrow harvest have been reported (Spitzer et al. 1994; Prokopishyn et al. 2019). We explored the role of a simple novel quality indicator, i.e peripheral blood to marrow harvest WBC ratio, as a predictor of GVHD risk. Materials and methods: We analysed 156 successive bone marrow harvests for patients suffering from severe thalassemia using G-BM donated by fully matched (10/10 or 12/12) related donors (143 siblings and 13 mothers) at Sankalp-People Tree Centre for Paediatric BMT - Bangalore (80 patients) and Sankalp-CIMS Centre for Paediatric BMT - Ahmedabad (76 patients). G-CSF priming was done for 5 days before the transplant with 10 mcg/kg/day in 2 divided subcutaneous doses and peripheral counts were obtained within 24 hours of collection. G-BM was collected in bags with 20 ml 50 U/ml heparin for the first 200 ml and further 10ml/100ml of marrow. We defined quality of marrow as follows: Quality of Marrow = WBC count of G-CSF primed BM / Peripheral WBC count of donor Quality of Marrow < 0.9 was categorised as poor as it signifies that the concentration of WBCs in bone marrow is same or lesser than the pre-harvest peripheral counts. EBMT criteria was used for grading GVHD. We calculated the odds of aGVHD based upon the quality of marrow. Beside marrow quality, the sex of the recipient seemed to impact GVHD rates and thus regression analysis was used to study the impact of G-BM quality independent of other factors. Statistics were performed on R software (version 3.5.x). Mann Whitney and Fisher's exact tests were used to compare numeric and categorical data respectively. Results: Of the 156 harvests, 18 had poor marrow quality; 33% (6 of 18) of these developed acute GVHD grade II-IV as opposed to 9% (13 of 138) (see Figure 1). Between those who developed GVHD and those who did not, marrow quality (p=0.012), patient sex (p=0.006) and sex mismatch status (p=0.014) were significantly different. Differences in total cell dose (p=0.65), transplant centre (p=0.62), bone marrow cell count (p=0.14) and peripheral cell count before harvest (p=0.72), donor age at BMT (p=0.42), relationship with the donor (p=1.0) and average volume of marrow per draw of syringe (p=0.23) showed no statistical significance. Variables with significant difference (sex mismatch and bone marrow quality) were entered in the Cox's proportional hazards model for acute GVHD II-IV which showed that poor marrow quality is the most significant independent risk associated with a hazard ratio of 3.6 (p=0.009), followed by male to male transplants which were associated with a hazard ratio of 10.6 (p=0.03) See Table 1. Further, poor quality marrow was associated with lower cell count in marrow (p<0.001), higher peripheral counts (p<0.001), higher collection volume (p=0.035) and was seen more in one centre compared to the other (p<0.001). Donor age (p=0.81), donor's relationship (p=1.0), donor sex (0.62), donor's carrier status (p=0.64), donor weight (p=0.85) and average volume of marrow per draw of syringe (p= 0.76) were not statistically significant. Discussion: The role of tolerance induced by mesenchymal stem cells in reduction (Aggarwal 2005) and even the treatment of GVHD (Le Blanc et al. 2004; Baron and Storb 2012) has been reported elsewhere and supports our findings though this is yet to be established (Fisher et al. 2019). Simple quality control of BM could be highly beneficial in all settings in minimising acute GVHD. This is particularly important in low- and middle-income countries where GVHD can be very challenging (Saleem et al. 2018) and is associated with high costs of management and prolonged hospitalisation (Grubb et al. 2016). Our indicator is accurately measurable, inexpensive, precise and timely; further it does not involve any sophisticated equipment (flow cytometry for CD counts), thus may be widely applicable and usable. Conclusion: Quality of BM harvest, as indicated by PB to BM WBC ratio, is a simple, effective and inexpensive informative indicator in the context of G-BM. Poorer quality of marrow collection may be contributing to increased risk of acute GVHD. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract:
Background:Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA) is characterized by extra-articular manifestations, as fever and rash, and rarely associated by a potentially lethal complication as macrophage activation syndrome (MAS). Anakinra is a recombinant human interleukin (IL)-1 receptor antagonist whose efficacy and safety profile has been studied for patients with SJIA.Objectives:To evaluate the long-term safety profile of anakinra in patients with SJIA.Methods:Data from patients with SJIA enrolled in the Pharmachild registry before 30 September 2018 and treated with anakinra were analyzed. The study endpoints were the occurrence of non-serious adverse events (AEs) of at least moderate severity and serious AEs (SAEs), including macrophage activation syndrome (MAS), and the duration of anakinra treatment with reasons for discontinuation. All endpoints were analyzed overall, by 6 month-time windows and in different treatment sets represented by those patients continuously treated with anakinra for at least 12, 18 and 24 months (set-12, -18, -24, respectively).Results:306 patients were enrolled. 46%, 34% and 28% of them had been treated for at least 12, 18 and 24 months, respectively. 201 AEs, mostly represented by infections, were reported for 509.3 patient-years (py) with an overall incidence rate (IR) of 39.5/100 py. Among 56 SAEs (IR 11.0/100 py), (Table 1) 23.2% were infections and 19.6% MAS episodes. The IR of AEs was higher during the first 6 months of anakinra, followed by decreasing IR in the different long-term treatment sets. Treatment discontinuation occurred in 76% of patients, most in the first 6 months, due to inefficacy (43%), remission (31%) or AEs/intolerance (15%). No deaths or malignancies occurred during anakinra treatment.Table 1.Number of SAEs and incidence rates (95% CI) by overall PT decreasing order and time window in the complete set (events with a frequency >1 by overall SOC and >1 by overall PT were reported) Only time windows <13 months were reported in the present table.Time window1-6 months7-12 monthsOverallN306194306Patient-time (years)117.380.2509.3SOCPTnRate (95% CI)nRate (95% CI)nRate(95% CI)AllAll3328.1 (19.1-41.5)45.0 (1.9-13.2)5611.0 (7.9-15.2)Infections and infestationsAll76.0 (2.9- 12.4)11.2 (0.2- 8.8)132.6 (1.4- 4.8)Pneumonia21.7 (0.4- 6.8)11.2 (0.2- 8.8)40.8 (0.3- 2.1)Immune system disordersAll76.0 (2.8- 12.5)11.2 (0.2- 8.8)112.2 (1.1- 4.1)Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis76.0 (2.8- 12.5)11.2 (0.2- 8.8)112.2 (1.1- 4.1)Injury, poisoning and procedural complicationsAll54.3 (1.8- 10.2)--91.8 (0.9- 3.4)Infusion related reaction10.9 (0.1- 6.0)--20.4 (0.1- 1.6)Injection related reaction43.4 (1.3- 9.1)--61.2 (0.5- 2.6)Metabolism and nutrition disordersAll32.6 (0.8- 7.9)--40.8 (0.3- 2.1)Skin and subcutaneous tissue disordersAll32.6 (0.8- 7.9)11.2 (0.2- 8.8)40.8 (0.3- 2.1)Blood and lymphatic system disordersAll10.9 (0.1- 6.1)--20.4 (0.1- 1.6)General disorders and administration site conditionsAll10.9 (0.1- 6.1)11.2 (0.2- 8.8)20.4 (0.1- 1.6)InvestigationsAll21.7 (0.4- 6.8)--20.4 (0.1- 1.6)Nervous system disordersAll10.9 (0.1- 6.0)--20.4 (0.1- 1.6)Surgical and medical proceduresAll10.9 (0.1- 6.0)--20.4 (0.1- 1.5)Abbreviations: SAE, serious adverse event; SOC, system organ class; PT, preferred term, MedDRA version 21.1; N, number of patients ever treated with anakinra during the time window irrespectively of the length of any unexposed periods; 95% CI, 95% Confidence Interval. Conclusion:The results of the present study confirm the long-term safety profile of anakinra in SJIA patients and show a decreasing overall incidence rate of AEs over time.Disclosure of Interests:Gabriella Giancane Grant/research support from: The study was funded by SOBI Swedish, Riccardo Papa Grant/research support from: The study was funded by SOBI Swedish, Sebastian Vastert Grant/research support from: The study was funded by SOBI Swedish, Francesca Bagnasco Grant/research support from: The study was funded by SOBI Swedish, Joost F.
