Abstract:
ABSTRACT This study was carried out to investigate the abundance, distribution, diversity and condition factor of Mormyrids in Oyan Dam lake, Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. The fish were sampled from the catches of the fishermen in Oyan Dam lake, which used gillnets of 30-80 mm laterally stretched mesh size. The fish were sampled monthly between February and September 2011, at two different sites (Imala and Ibaro). The results revealed that a total number of 100 fishes of six species belonging to the family Mormyridae were collected. Numerically, catches were dominated by Mormyrus rume (34%), Hyperopisus bebe (30%) and Petrocephalus bane (24%). Together, these species comprised 88% of all collected individuals. Marcusenius ihuysi was rare and least in number representing 1% of the fish caught. The results showed that only four species were recorded in the dry season, namely Mormyrus rume, Hyperopisus bebe, Petrocephalus bane and Mormyrus deliciosus while five species were recorded in the wet season particularly in September. Mormyrus deliciosus, was not recorded in the wet season. In terms of body weight, the highest mean value was recorded for Mormyrus deliciosus (435.71 ± 95.71), followed by Mormyrus rume (143.82 ± 5.55) and Hyperopisus bebe (123.5 ± 5.26) while Petrocephalus bane was the least one (95.00 ± 8.56). The results also showed that the condition factor during the wet season (4.18) was higher than the condition factor of the dry season (3.51). Simpson’s index was used to determine the species richness, while Shannon-Wiener’s Index was used to evaluate species diversity; species evenness was equally evaluated using Pielou’s Index. The indices of diversity included (d) = 0.31 and 0.23, H = 1.18 and 1.53 and E = 0.851 and 0.853 respectively for the two sites at Oyan Dam lake. The estimates from these indices indicated a low fish species composition and richness, also unevenness in the population of Mormyrids in Oyan Dam lake. Therefore, it will be advisable to regulate the activities of fishers in the water body to allow future increase in the abundance of this species.

Abstract:
The structure of a fish population is determined by the equilibrium between growth, recruitment and total mortality. But, there is paucity of information on the growth and mortality of Mormyrus rume in Nigeria. Therefore this study is needful to determine its population parameters, with a view of evolving management strategies for its sustainable exploitation. Estimates of population parameters of Mormyrus rume were obtained from length-frequency data of 836 individuals collected monthly for a period of 24 months from January 2017 to December 2018. The estimated growth parameters were: asymptotic length (L∞) was 100.8cm; growth coefficient (K) was 0.62/year; growth performance (Ɵ) was 3.8; length at maturity (Lm) was 52.57cm; reproductive load (Lm/L∞) was 0.52 and optimum length (Lopt) was 65.10cm. Likewise, natural, fishing and total mortalities were 0.93, 1.46 and 2.39 respectively. The values of exploitation rate (0.61) and ratio of total mortality and growth coefficient (3.85) showed that Mormyrus rume is most exploited in Ikere-gorge. Therefore, appropriate fishing regulations should be enforced to regulate fishing gears and mesh size that will fish Mormyrus rume at sustainable level.

AbstractDespite the high commercial value of the striped seabream Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Gulf of Tunis, biological data on its age, growth and exploitation rate are lacking. With the aim of estimating growth parameters, 516 individuals, ranging from 6–27.5 cm total length and from 3.5–293.5 g total weight, were collected from the artisanal fishing fleet between February 2014 and July 2016. The somatic growth presented a positive allometry and was described by the equation TW = 6.54 10−3TL3.213. The monthly analysis of the marginal increment of the otoliths revealed that only one annulus was deposited per year. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L∞ = 30.18 cm, k = 0.303 year−1 and t0 = −1.42 years. Total and natural instantaneous rates of mortality were respectively Z = 0.784 year−1 and M = 0.698 year−1. Exploitation rate (E = 0.1) showed that the Gulf of Tunis stock of L. mormyrus is not overexploited. The estimated length class giving highest yield (Lopt) was 17.15 ± 1.71 cm.

Abstract:
The diet and feeding habits of the striped seabream, Lithognathus mormyrus, from the Gulf of Gabes were investigated by examining the stomach contents of 1221 specimens ranging from 9.7 cm to 24.1 cm total length (and 11.2 g to 158.1 g in weight). Specimens were collected from commercial catches between September 2005 and August 2007. Of the total number of examined stomachs, 1115 were empty (Index of vacuity = 91.3%). This percentage varied significantly over the year, attaining a maximum in winter (95.77%) and summer (95.79%) and, a minimum in autumn (82.25%). Eight higher taxonomic groups were identified (teleosts, crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms, annelids, spongia and plantae). Crustaceans were the most important prey taxa, constituting 84.6% of the total IRI. Other taxa, such as teleosts, and molluscs were of secondary importance. Significant differences in the diet were observed in relation to season. The estimated trophic level was 3.63 ± 0.59 for the whole population of L. mormyrus of the Gulf of Gabes. Based on the composition of its diet, this species may be considered to be an omnivorous fish with a preference for animal material and showed a specialist feeding strategy.

Understudying the presence of bacteria and fungi population on freshwater fishes, provides the knowledge and understanding of their diversity and potential roles they may play in the health of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The present study was conducted to evaluate the diversity of bacteria and fungi species of identified fish samples from River Mijawal, Nasarawa State. The fishes were sampled from the only landing for three months (October to December, 2019) for this study. During the sampling periods, thirteen (13) different fish species were identified; they were swabbed with sterilized swab stick from the skin surface for bacteria and fungi identification. The Dominant fish species were Tilapia zillii, Labeo senegalensis, Mormyrus rume and Mormyrus tapines. The total number of thirteen (13) bacterial and five (5) fungi species were isolated and identified. Eight (8) of the bacteria isolates, were gram negative bacteria (Pseudomonas sp, Aeromonas sp, Serratia mercescenes, Proteus sp, Salmonella spp, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp, and Enterobacter sp.); whilst the other five (5) were gram positive bacteria (Bacillus sp, Micrococcus sp, Staphylococcus sp, Enterococcus sp and Listeria monocytogenes).The five isolated fungi species were Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus sp, Penicillium sp, Trichoderma viridae and Geotrichum candidum. The frequency of occurrence of the isolated bacteria indicated that Staphylococcus sp had the highest frequency of occurrence (16.67%) while Serratia mercescens had the least occurrence (2.78%). The highest number of occurrence of the isolated fungi species was observed in Rhizopus sp while the least was recorded in Geotricum candidum. It was observed that Tilapia zillii and Mormyrus rume had the most frequent bacteria and fungi isolates. It can therefore be deduced from the results that fish samples identified from River Mijawal has high bacteria and fungi diversity that may be pathogenic to man. The occurrence of these microbes may be attributed of human and animal faeces in the River

(Neoechinorhynchus) rutili Müller, 1780 (Neoechinorhynchidae); Acanthocephaloide propinquus (Dujardin, 1845) Meyer, 1932; A. incrassatus (Molin, 1858) Meyer, 1932 (Arhythmacanthidae); Longicollum pagrosomi Yamaguti, 1935 (Pomphorhynchidae); Rhadinorhynchus cadenati (Golvan et Houin, 1964) Golvan, 1969 (Rhadinorhynchidae); and Telosentis exiguus (von Linstow, 1901) Van Cleave, 1923 (Illiosentidae). Acanthocephaloide propinquus, N. (N.) rutili, L. pagrosomi and R. cadenati were restricted to the rectum and the posterior intestine, whereas the other species (A. incrassatus, T. exiguus and N. (H.) agilis) colonized two or three parts of the intestine. The most diverse acanthocephalan fauna was recorded in Lithognathus mormyrus, with three species; two species were reported from Trachurus trachurus; and a single species was recorded in Liza aurata and in Atherina boyeri. Neoechinorhynchus (N.) rutili, L. pagrosomi and R. cadenati attained the lowest prevalences of less than 6% and were considered as to be rare species. Acanthocephaloide incrassatus, A. propinquus, T. exiguus and N. (H.) agilis were satellite species. The diversity of the acanthocephalan fauna in the fish from the Bizerte lagoon is compared with previous studies from other localities. The report of A. incrassatus, A. propinquus and N. (N.) rutili in L. mormyrus presents new host records in Mediterranean waters.

L'etude de la sexualite du marbre, lithognathus mormyrus, est apprehendee par une analyse biometrique, sclerochronologique, histologique et cytologique d'une population du littoral mediterraneen roussillonnais. Les parametres de la croissance du marbre sont estimes par ajustement au modele de von bertalanffy. Trois types d'architecture de la sagitta (meb) sont mis en relation avec le statut sexuel des poissons. Les modalites de la gonadogenese chez l. Mormyrus sont decrites: a deux mois, la bisexualite est acquise. Chez des specimens d'un an, trois types d'ovotestis juveniles sont identifies: prevalence testiculaire, equivalence testiculaire et ovarienne, prevalence ovarienne. Les cycles saisonniers de reproduction sont caracterises: repos sexuel d'octobre a mars, gametogenese d'avril a juillet, ponte en aout-septembre et post ponte en septembre. La structure sexuelle de la population est apprehendee par l'analyse de la distribution de frequence de taille, en relation avec le sexe (observations macro- & microscopiques). La moitie seulement de la population est hermaphrodite protandre. 50% des poissons sont gonochoriques secondaires: 40% de femelles primaires et 10% de males persistants. La protandrie n'est donc pas exclusive chez l. Mormyrus. L'inversion sexuelle protandre se realise en 2 etapes (met): 1) l'achevement de l'edification de l'aire ovarienne, durant la phase male fonctionnelle, est un phenomene discontinu, cyclique (en periode post ponte) et discret. 2) la regression du territoire testiculaire, pendant la phase femelle fonctionnelle, est un phenomene continu, qui procede de la degenerescence des spermatogonies, phagocytees par les cellules de sertoli. Des cellules immunitaires interviennent secondairement dans la resorption du materiel male degenerescent, conduisant a la formation de corps bruns (lipofuscines). Les potentialites de l'ovotestis de sparides dans l'expression du sexe sont estimees et discutees

Abstract:
Electroreception is a sensory modality found in some fish, which enables them to sense the environment through the detection of electric fields. Biological experimentation on this ability has built an intricate framework that has identified many of the components involved in electroreception's production, but lack the framework for bringing the details back together into a system-level model of how they operate together. This thesis builds and tests a computational model of the Electrosensory Lateral Line Lobe (ELL) in mormyrid electric fish in an attempt to bring some of electroreception's structural details together to help explain its function. The ELL is a brain region that functions as a primary processing area of electroreception. It acts as an adaptive filter that learns to predict reoccurring stimuli and removes them from its sensory stream, passing only novel inputs to other brain regions for further processing. By creating a model of the ELL, the relevant components which underlie the ELL's functional, electrophysiological patterns can be identified and scientific hypotheses regarding their behavior can be tested. Systems science's approach is adopted to identify the ELL's relevant components and bring them together into a unified conceptual framework. The methodological framework of computational neuroscience is used to create a computational model of this structure of relevant components and to simulate their interactions. Individual activation tendencies of the different included cell types are modeled with dynamical systems equations and are interconnected according to the connectivity of the real ELL. Several of the ELL's input patterns are modeled and incorporated in the model. The computational approach claims that if all of the relevant components of a system are captured and interconnected accurately in a computer program, then when provided with accurate representations of the inputs a simulation should produce functional patterns similar to those of the real system. These simulated patterns generated by the ELL model are compared to recordings from real mormyrid ELLs and their correspondences validate or nullify the model's integrity. By building a computation model that can capture the relevant components of the ELL's structure and through simulation reproduces its function, a systems-level understanding begins to emerge and leads to a description of how the ELL's structure, along with relevant inputs, generate its function. The model can be manipulated more easily than a biological ELL, and allows us to test hypotheses regarding how changes in the structures affect the function, and how different inputs propagate through the structure in a way that produces complex functional patterns.

Dissertação de mest. em Estudos Marinhos e costeiros, Unidade de Ciências e Tecnologias dos Recursos Aquáticos, Univ. do Algarve, 1998<br>No presente estudo descreve-se a ecologia alimentar de três espécies de Sparídeos da costa Algarvia, cuja importância económica é elevada e que se encontram comercialmente ameaçadas, analisando e comparando os seus hábitos alimentares através de métodos quantitativos (coeficiente de vacuidade e índice de replecção) e métodos qualitativos (percentagem em número, frequência de ocorrência e percentagem em peso). As presas preferenciais foram determinadas pelo coeficiente alimentar de HUREAU (Q) e pelo índice de importância relativa (I.R.I.). Foi analisado um total de 105 indivíduos (46 de Pagrus pagrus, 37 de Lithognathus mormyrus e 22 de Diplodus sargus) capturados por redes de emalhar entre Abril de 1995 e Maio de 1997. As espécies P. pagrus e L. mormyrus evidenciaram um carácter generalista no seu padrão de alimentação, ingerindo um elevado número de taxa distintos, enquanto que a espécie D. sargus apresentou uma dieta mais restrita, composta maioritariamente de moluscos bivalves. O estudo da sobreposição dos regimes alimentares destas três espécies revelou a existência de um grau de sobreposição significativo. As espécies em estudo podem ser consideradas como consumidores secundários, que se alimentam de organismos planctonívoros e herbívoros, podendo ser incluídas, por isso, no nível trófico 3 de LINDEMAN.<br>This study presents data on the diet of three Sparid species from the South coast of Portugal (Algarve), that are commercially important, but also in danger of over-exploitation. Data were analyzed with numeric methods (fullness Index) and qualitative methods (percentage of occurrence and weight and number percentage). The index of relative importance (I.R.I.) and the HUREAU s feeding coefficient (Q) were used to determine prey importance. A total of 105 fish (46 Pagrus pagrus, 37 Lithognathus mormyrus and 22 Diplodus sargus) were obtained from local gillnet fishery between April 1995 and May 1997. P. pagrus and L mormyrus were relatively euryphagous, preying upon a high number of taxa, while D. sargus had a more specialized diet, composed mainly of mollusc bivalves. Overlap analysis revealed that there was a significant overiap between the diet of this three species.
