Abstract:
The meaning of ‘melancholia’ in classical antiquity is opaque and has little in common with 20th-century psychiatric usage (Drabkin, 1955; Heiberg, 1927). At that time, melancholia and mania were not polar opposites (i.e. one was not defined as having opposite features to the other). Melancholia was defined in terms of overt behavioural features such as decreased motility, and morosity (Roccatagliata, 1973; Simon, 1978). Hence, in medical usage, ‘melancholia’ referred to a subtype of mania and named, in general, states of reduced behavioural output. These included disorders that might “exhibit depressed, agitated, hallucinatory, paranoid and even demented states … the ancient diagnosis of melancholy has no correct analogue in modern psychiatric practice …” (Siegel, 1973, p. 274).

Abstract:
The Venetian printmaker Giacomo Franco produced several engravings for the 1597 coronation of Morosina Morosini, the wife of doge Marin Grimani (1595-1605). Focusing on three of these prints in which a bird's-eye view of the city is framed with illustrations of the festivities, this essay explores relations between space, gender, allegory and costume as they were manifested in this rare female procession. An examination of the pictorial conventions used by Franco and other artists to depict the event suggests that Morosina's coronation functioned both to resist existing codes of gender but also to reassert female patrician status.

Morosity is the main problem of the Brazilian Judiciary and has affected it for more than a century. In spite of the importance of this problem, there is a scarcity of studies in the literature that analyze, in a scientific way and with methodology, the possible causes of the slowness and that propose viable and manageable solutions. This study aims to verify if certain reported causes actually contribute to the slowness and, thus, to propose a viable solution. The survey of the possible causes was carried out through a review of the literature and the analysis of satisfaction surveys conducted at the Goiás State Court of Justice (TJGO). After identifying 43 (fortythree) possible causes, the increase in demand and the lack of magistrates / servers were selected for an analysis. After the analysis, using a methodology imposed by the National Justice Council - CNJ, it was found that the current number of magistrates and servants of the TJGO is enough to give flow to the demand. Thus, the redistribution of the labor force was proposed as a way to better serve the lossmaking judicial units.

Sales, i. Favà Lluís. "Crèdit i morositat a la Catalunya del segle XIV. El cas de la baronia de Llagostera." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Girona, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/667626.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis analyses the private credit available to the popular classes during the fourteenth century. At the same time, it focuses on the institutional mechanisms granted by public powers in order to sanction this credit, but also to pursue non-payment. The case study chosen is the barony of Llagostera, in north-eastern Catalonia. The main data used for the investigation is drawn from the notarial series preserved for the territory, as well as from the court records of the local jurisdictional court. In the first instance, primary sources are explored, placing special emphasis on court records. In a second block we present the main financial products available to the population of the territory, namely the ‘comandes de bestiar’ (cattle-leasing agreements), the financed purchases of cloth, and the so-called ‘crèdit censal’ (i.e. the local rentes viagères). Finally, in the third block of the thesis we present the coercive mechanisms by which jurisdictional lordships provided legal security to the financial market

Abstract:
The most powerful Venetian cardinals in the sixteenth century were arguably those stemming from the Grimani family. This chapter presents a detailed analysis of the MS Morosini Grimani 270 in the Biblioteca del Museo Correr in Venice, focusing on drawings that illustrate the appointment of Grimani cardinals, alongside their portraits. The iconographic derivation of these drawings from existing works of art will be explored through comparison with painted portraits and other visual representations of the Grimani cardinals, some previously unidentified. The possible function of the included cardinal portraits, and the historical scenes relating to them will be investigated, considering the role of images of cardinals within the dynastic strategies and histories of certain families.

Abstract:
Back in Venice, Girolamo secures housing in Ca’ Morosini, a Gothic palace on the Grand Canal not far from Ca’ Bembo at Santa Maria Nova. Gian Matteo successfully defends himself from charges of improperly spending state funds in Candia and is allowed to stand for election again. His wife Marcella dies in August 1555, a few days after Giulia gives birth to a daughter named after her grandmother. It is a time of droughts and famine in the countryside, celebrations in Venice, and periodic outbreaks of plague throughout the territory. In early 1556, Bona Sforza, Queen of Poland, is feted throughout the territory. The following year the city celebrates the first coronation of a Dogaressa in a century, with more festivities. Two sons, Giovanni and Alvise III, are born to Giulia in 1556 and 1557. Bishop Michele becomes majordomo of the household of Pope Pius IV in Rome and reluctantly engages in papal politics.

Abstract:
The Evening Of May 17, 954, was a night for celebration. An office full of ecstatic NAACP workers in Manhattan, as well as black people throughout the country, were doing just that as they hailed the bright new era all assumed would arrive with the landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education handed down by the Supreme Court earlier that day. The case was not easily won. It was the culmination of two decades of planning and litigation. At the very least, a party was in order. The NAACP staff hailed the high court’s opinion with cheers, toasts, and impromptu dancing, but according to one report, Thurgood Marshall, one of the chief architects of the litigation wandered morosely through the happy throng frowning. “You fools go ahead and have your fun,” he said, “but we ain’t begun to work yet.” Marshall’s prediction was both prophetic and a highly accurate commentary on the black experience. Even so, the staff had reason to celebrate. The organization was doing what its founders had intended. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)was founded in 1909. Its founders, an interracial group of liberal lawyers and socialists, concerned with the nonenforcement of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, saw the need for an organization that would effectively press for political, legal, and educational rights. They sought an end to segregation, the right to work, and the right to protection from violence and intimidation. The need for the NAACP was clear. In the previous year, in addition to the several dozen blacks lynched each year, thousands of whites rioted in Springfield, Illinois. They killed six blacks, two by lynching, and burned and destroyed black homes and businesses. Two thousand blacks left the city but none of the alleged riot leaders were punished, although the city obtained indictments following the restoration of order. The white community launched a political and economic boycott to drive out the remaining black residents. After its founding, the NAACP established a legal redress committee, and in the next decades several of its cases reached the Supreme Court.

Abstract:
Sieges of the Morea War in the celebratory cycle of Francesco Morosini. Art, topography and military historyThe forty-eight paintings executed between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to celebrate the military campaigns of Francesco Morosini (1619-1694) are an exceptional repertoire of military genre painting. The canvas uses different figurative registers to represent naval battles, cities and territories, siege operations. If the relations with war literature and propaganda prints, which spread across Europe and which had their official “historiographer” in Vincenzo Coronelli in Venice, are evident, equally strong relationships can be established between the paintings, war reports and the plans made on the battlefield by military engineers. This paper deals with the paintings dedicated to the sieges of Corone and Negroponte are examined here.
