Abstract:
In view of its inevitable implications at an individual and collective level, in all historic periods hospital building has represented the most advanced level of elaboration of architectural models aimed at the optimal synthesis of form, function and technique. Consequently, the typological and morphological reading of the Ospedale degli Infermi of Faenza, in the wake of a campaign of architectural surveys and archive research, represents an opportunity for verifying the relationship between technical culture and design and building practice through which it is possible to identify the typolo

Abstract:
The monograph, based on a long-term interdisciplinary study, outlines the features of the diagnosis and rehabilitation of injuries from overload of the lower limb on movement patterns unnatural for normal life, but typical for types of motor activity associated with the art of movement (choreography, classical dance, rhythmic gymnastics, etc.). It is shown that not so much professional requirements, as a lack of constitutional conditioned abilities are the cause of overload damage, the main predictor of which is muscle hypertonicity.

Abstract:
This chapter offers a thorough introduction to nanosyntactic theory, a development of the cartographic program in generative grammar. It discusses the foundations on which nanosyntax was conceived, such as the “one feature–one head” maxim and the universal functional sequence (fseq). It also provides a brief comparison of theoretical and terminological issues in nanosyntax vs. the competing framework of Distributed Morphology. It is seen that the syntactic component according to nanosyntax unifies aspects of (what are traditionally called) syntax, morphology, and formal semantics. This is refl

The Second Pedagogical Notebook is a continuation of the first ‘notebook’, dedicated to the Urban Planning Research course. The course and the notebook were created by Prof. Ivana Šverko, with the aim of offering students of architecture in Split the basics of urban planning research in a Mediterranean context. The idea behind the pedagogical notebook is to contribute to the recognition of the research phase as an essential starting point in the entire, complicated process of urban planning and design, as well as an understanding of research methodologies in specific spatial and social conditi

Discogenic lumbar pain is a frequent cause of prolonged disability. Currently, there are few effective minimally invasive therapeutic options to treat diseased discs and provide a long-term pain relief. Intradiscal biacuplasty improves functional capacity and affords pain relief in properly selected patients. Provocative discography is a relatively invasive intradiscal technique that has been used as a diagnostic tool to help to detect painful discs and associated morphological changes. One of the effective therapeutic approaches to control discogenic pain is to use an ablative radiofrequency

This article discusses the study of Arabic morphology. It first considers the root-and-pattern theory, which has become the orthodox approach to Arabic synchronic morphology. It then details the paradigm shift in the mid-1980s, when students of Arabic morphology reached the conclusion that a rigidly reductionist root-and-pattern analysis is fundamentally inadequate as a descriptive tool. This has led to a variety of alternative models, which can be loosely grouped under the rubric of word based or stem based. All such models have in common the idea that many or all morphological regularities i

This chapter identifies the rationale behind this volume: the enduring controversy over how to theorize language-mixing strategies. Relating this controversy to discrepancies in the conceptualization and treatment of the data of language mixing, it outlines a method to distinguish among other-language phenomena based on spontaneous bilingual performance, quantitative analysis, and rigorous standards of proof. It justifies the focus on the three quantitatively predominant manifestations of language mixing: nonce borrowing, lexical retrieval of previously borrowed words and code-switching. It in

An orbitally induced increase in summer insolation during the last glacial-interglacial transition enhanced the thermal contrast between land and sea, with land masses heating up compared to the adjacent ocean surface. In North Africa, warmer land surfaces created a low-pressure zone, driving the northward penetration of monsoonal rains originating from the Atlantic Ocean. As a consequence, regions today among the driest of the world were covered by permanent and deep freshwater lakes, some of them being exceptionally large, such as the “Mega” Lake Chad, which covered some 400 000 square kilom

The term ‘athlete’s heart’ refers to the structural, functional, and electrical adaptations that occur as a result of habitual exercise training. It is characterized by an increase of the internal chamber dimensions and wall thickness of both atria and ventricles. The athlete’s right ventricle also undergoes structural, functional, and electrical remodelling as a result of intense exercise training. Some research suggests that the haemodynamic stress of intense exercise is greater for the right heart and, as a result, right heart remodelling is slightly more profound when compared with the lef

The use of vascular ultrasonography (alone or combined with newer techniques like angio-magnetic resonance or angio-computed tomography) is an essential tool for the diagnosis and the assessment of vascular diseases.
