However, its impact in politics and religion has often been far from negative, if we will consider what secular societies have derived from Christianity: human rights, for example, and a religious affiliation which has been part and parcel of national identity. As archaeologists have attempted to interpret pseudoarchaeology, it has been implied that it often resembles religion more than science, both in terms of its epistemology and the types of worldviews it is deployed to legitimate. This article synthesizes the work of the authors in this special issue of Nova Religio to further articulate these “religious” aspects of pseudoarchaeology.

Abstract:
Abstract Proactively addressing religious and spiritual (r/s) issues has a strong intervention effect on patients, which is generally more important than the detailed content of spiritual screenings and assessments. When asked about r/s needs or problems, patients may feel bothered, surprised, annoyed, or, conversely, satisfied, supported, acknowledged in their coping efforts. Consequently, documentation should first and foremost reflect the patient’s reaction towards the clinician’s r/s intervention and to what extent the patient wishes this interaction to be shared within the healthcare team. In psychiatry and psychotherapy, patients’ spirituality is less pathologized than in former times and more and more accepted as a universal dimension of human experience, transcending individual religions. In mental health and in other medical fields, r/s may be part of the problem or part of the solution (K. Pargament), or both. Consequently, spiritual charting should not only differentiate pathological/negative and resilient/positive coping but consists of the patient’s r/s healthcare preferences and goals as well as the role he or she attributes to the health professional.

AbstractExamining the “digital” as a challenge to one of the most traditional spheres of private and public life of Russians, the chapter is focused on institutional aspects of the religion digitalization in the theoretical frame of mediatization. Normatively, digitalization as such does not contradict the dogmatic teaching of any traditional for Russia religion, in Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Buddhism theologically it is being considered as a neutral process with good or bad consequences depending on human will. Therefore, functionally digital technologies are seen by religious institutions as a shaping force, one more facility (channel, tool, space, network) for effective preaching while the core of religious practices still remains based on non-mediated interpersonal communication.

Abstract:
ZusammenfassungThe paper explores the multi-stage process of translation that enabled German writer Johann Michael Moscherosch to refer to the perusal of Elizabeth Jocelyn’s conduct book The Mothers Legacy to her Vnborn Childe as one of the main factors in his decision to write his own devotional book, Insomnis Cura Parentum (1643). It is argued that Moscherosch himself did not translate The Mothers Legacy from the French, but rather read it in an already existing German translation based on a French version. In addition to tracing back the ways in which The Mothers Legacy, as a result of small changes in both translations, became more compatible with the Strasbourg-specific rendition of Lutheranism that largely shaped Moscherosch’s religious views and therefore his parenting, the paper aims to show how aspects of religious confession, regional politics, and the book trade were crucial in the reception of seventeeth-century devotional writing.

This chapter focuses on Georgetown College, the founding of which seems characterized by a collection of inconsistencies. The most intriguing incongruity associated with Georgetown's establishment is that although the Jesuit order of the Roman Catholic Church founded the institution to educate young men to enter religious life—in essence, to prepare them for seminary—the college practiced religious tolerance and admitted students from a variety of Christian denominations. Consequently, few graduates entered the priesthood. As for the institution's educational purpose, the first prospectus declared a dedication to advancing the common good. The most compelling aspect of Georgetown's prospectus is the way it asserted the institution's commitment to advancing the public good through promoting “the grand interests of society.” Manifesting the same social ethos of civic-mindedness, its officials aimed to educate graduates who would better society through their life pursuits.

Lucretia Mott’s Quaker speeches and other writings are examined to show that her contributions to political theory are shaped by a radically antidogmatic worldview rooted in her progressive religious faith, an unwavering commitment to autonomy for all people, and an egalitarian conception of power. Mott proposes a dialectical, self-reflective, critical approach that serves as the basis of political citizenship. By exposing the hidden sources of inequality, oppression, and injustice, her approach empowers human beings to shape an egalitarian, voluntarist political system. This in turn allows Mott to argue for abolitionism and expanding women’s rights, including suffrage. Moreover, like Sarah Grimké, Mott also reflects important aspects of early Quaker constitutionalism by emphasizing the importance of human reason guided by the inner light and the role of deliberation in fashioning a government based on authentic consent.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter reviews, highlights, and elaborates on some key points. Many scholars in the social sciences and the humanities study various aspects of religion. Despite it being a question of huge importance for religion and family life, however, extremely few scholars have studied how and why religious parents raise their children to pass on to them their religious practices and beliefs. This chapter engages this question of intergenerational religious transmission by taking a cultural approach, in the hope of further opening up this area for additional study and providing helpful answers and greater understanding. In the process, the chapter discusses some important things about the nature and workings of culture generally. But it notes that much more research on both religious parenting and cultural models is needed beyond what has been accomplished here.

Abstract:
Woody Allen has famously said he is not afraid of dying; he just doesn’t want to be there when it happens. It’s no wonder his words struck a chord—“not being” is a scary proposition. Yet many Americans believe that their psyches will persist after the demise of their bodies. And it’s not only religious devotees who believe in the afterlife; young children say the same, and so do adults and children in other societies, including even those who are self-described “extinctivists.” Our afterlife beliefs, however, are remarkably inconsistent. On the one hand, we state that some aspects of our minds are immaterial, inasmuch as they survive our bodies. But on the other hand, we believe that some of these seemingly immaterial properties of the dead act like matter; for example, they are contagious, much like germs or excrement. Chapter 14 considers our views of what happens once we are no more. We will see that the collision between Dualism and Essentialism—the twin forces that stir up our misconceptions about our origins—are also responsible for these mistaken beliefs about our demise.

Abstract:
What is the kind of action that a creational theology might endorse? The chapter sets up a contrast between strongly activist liberative views and a more sabbatical mood. Consideration is given to the work of Paul Knitter who has engaged extensively with the theme of creation for interfaith dialogue. However, contra Knitter, it is suggested that the quotidian is the arena par excellence for the practical sense because it happens to be the most common aspects of our lives. However, what kinds of praxis come into view? It is proposed that human work and activity (the vita activa) might be a form of creational soteriology. Finally, the chapter asks: What is the mood of a creational theology of religions? Our basic claim is that the underlying attitude generated by a turn to creation, and the ground for relations between creatures, is rest or Sabbath.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the construction of the idea of “pilgrimage” in the works of key Han kitāb authors Wang Daiyu (1590-1658), Liu Zhi (1670-1724), and Ma Dexin (1794-1874). All three advocated pilgrimage as a religious ideal, but each successive generation gave greater weight to its requirement as an obligatory observance, as Sino-Muslims gradually entered a more interconnected Islamic context. The perception of the ḥajj changed from a symbol of true belief to a potential critical practice, and it finally emerged as an essential religious duty. Wang Daiyu outlined the theological foundations of the pilgrimage and its role as a link to the time of creation and union with God. Liu Zhi underlined the physical practice of potential pilgrims, stressing the ceremonial and experiential aspects of the pilgrimage and detailing the practices it entailed. Ma Dexin emphasized the performative aspect of the journey itself, asserting its doctrinal necessity while arguing for its power to rectify and renew religious understanding.

This chapter considers the problematic aspects of reading the religious texts themselves. It aims to help provide guidelines for the old and yet continuing polemical controversy on the part of those who reject the legitimacy of the slogan “Islam is the Solution,” which is the third approach in dealing with the phenomenon of the Islamic revival. This approach is not a by-product of the Islamist revival or merely a negative response to it: It is an approach that is rooted in modern thought, and the most prominent representatives of it may be the “advocates of enlightenment” who are now known by the name secularists—a name that is sometimes meant to stigmatize them as infidels, atheists, or heretics, with the implication that these people serve foreign interests and are traitors to their countries and to the wider Arab nation.
