Abstract:
My Thesis body of work, The Mythos for the Mortal, presents visual interpretations of apocalyptic mythoi—past, present, and future. These works are both a conscious and unconscious response to childhood exposure to apocalyptic stories and form a visual record of social, political and religious interpretations of the apocalypse. The overarching theme of apocalypse (from the Greek word Apokalypsis, meaning ‘to unveil’ or ‘to reveal’) has allowed me to reconnect to my youth and heritage and has driven me to articulate more clearly a perspective regarding the future and what it will ‘reveal’ to us. I use the landscape as a stage to create narratives and metaphors expressing these ideas. These paintings and drawings are divided into four categories of apocalypse: historical, future, ecological, and personal.

Johnston, Richard Rutherford. "Romanticism and Mortal Consciousness." Thesis, Harvard University, 2013. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:11043.

Full text
Abstract:
The Romantic period coincides with a fundamental shift in Western attitudes toward death and dying. This dissertation examines how Romantic poets engage this shift. It argues that "Romantic mortal consciousness" - a form of mortal reflection characteristic of English Romantic poetry - is fundamentally social and political in its outlook and strikingly similar to what one might now call a liberal social consciousness. During the Romantic period, mortally conscious individuals, less able or willing to depend on old spiritual consolations, began to regard Death not as the Great Leveler of society but rather as a force that sealed social inequality into the records of history. Intimations of mortality forced one to look beyond the self and, to quote Keats, "think of the Earth." This dissertation considersthe development of Romantic mortal consciousness. Death’s transformation from the Great Leveler of social inequality into its crystallizing agent is evident in the Romantic response to Graveyard School poetry. This is the subject of my first chapter, which focuses on Gray’s "Elegy" and Wordsworth’s "The Ruined Cottage." Chapter Two examines Lord Byron’s Cain, where mortal consciousness transforms Cain’s personal lament about mortality into a protest on behalf of a doomed race. Cain anticipates death studies by dramatizing the shift from what Ariès calls the "death of the self" to the "death of the other" and by recognizing that mortality is essentially a cultural construct. However, the other idea of mortality as a solitary reckoning with death does not disappear entirely. Poems by Hemans and Keats, the subjects of my third and fourth chapters, show how the "death of the self" flourishes as the other side of Romantic mortal consciousness. Romantic mortal consciousness has centripetal and centrifugal aspects. It exhorts the ruminative soul to engage sympathetically with the suffering of others. At the same time, it turns the soul inwards, bringing the fate of the self into focus. One aim of this dissertation is to unify these aspects through an analysis of the sublime. In Chapter Five, which focuses on Byron and Smith, I illustrate the connection between mortal consciousnesses, social or political consciousness, and aesthetic awareness.

Abstract:
This book is a contribution to the debate of the metaphysics and value of death. The metaphysical problems of death are closely connected with the debate of personal identity. In Chapter Two, I defend the view that human persons are human organisms. This view, often called "Animalism," is apparently incompatible with a standard account of personal identity over time, "the Psychological View." I try to show how the Animalist can accommodate the intuitions that seem to support the Psychological View. In Chapter Three, I discuss the thesis that human persons cease to exist when they die, a thesis that has bearing on several metaphysical and ethical questions. Recently, many materialists have attacked the thesis, arguing that human persons continue to exist after death as corpses. In opposition to this popular view, I argue that human animals, and hence human persons, do go out of existence at death. Epicureans deny that death is an evil for the one who dies. Their arguments are based on what will be called "the missing subject problem." In Chapter Four, I aim to show that Epicureanism survives the objections that have been put forward in current literature. But I also argue that a more convincing case can be made against the Epicurean view. Anti-Epicureans typically base the view that death is sometimes bad for the deceased on the "deprivation approach." This approach seems to have the unsavory consequence that prenatal non-existence, too, is a great evil. Recently, proponents of the deprivation approach have suggested a number of ways of avoiding this implication. In Chapter Five, I argue that all these attempts fail, and that it is preferable to accept the consequence. In Chapter Six I turn to the question of the reasonableness of the special concern that most people have for their own deaths. I claim that this issue should be treated in the light of the more general question of the justifiability of special concern about one's own future. It is often held that such concern is justified if and only if "Non-Reductionism" about personal identity is correct. I argue, on the contrary, that it is unjustified whether or not Non-Reductionism is true.

In order to contribute with epidemiological indicators that can evaluate the importance of the Diabetes mellitus, one of the main public health problems of the world nowadays, a study was carried out based on death certificate informations. The Diabetes mellitus mortality was estabilished by the analisys of the multiple causes of death based on informations of death certificates of residents of Niterói (RJ) city in 1993. This aspect of the analysis was carried out in order to demonstrate that the disease is often underreported as an afecction that contributes to death processes, when studied only as underlying cause of death. The “ratio of reported to underlying cause” for Niterói (RJ) city was 2,21 in 1993. The mention of Diabetes mellitus as multiple cause of death was frequently observed among death certificates of women and increased with age. Such pattern described in others studies were also observed in Niterói (RJ) city in 1993. Many studies of Diabetes mellitus as multiple causes of death demonstrate that the main afecctions mentioned in death certificates of diabetic persons are cardiovascular diseases, mainly cardiac diseases. For Niterói (RJ) city in 1993 the main afecctions mentioned in death certificates of diabetic were cardiovascular diseases. In death certificates which had Diabetes mellitus as underlying cause, cerebrovascular diseases were the most frequent among coexistent afecctions; in death certificates with Diabetes mellitus as an associated cause, the principal underlying causes of death were cardiac diseases.

Heflick, Nathan A. "From Immortal to Mortal: Objectification and Perceptions of a Woman's Soul." Scholar Commons, 2012. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4068.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Objectification most literally refers to perceiving a person as an object. Research shows that when people focus on a woman's appearance, compared to her personality, she is perceived of as more of an object (e.g., lower in human nature traits). These objectification effects, however, rarely occur for male targets. Moreover, humans, unlike objects, are typically believed to have a soul, that is, some part of the self that outlasts the death of the physical body and extends into a post-mortem existence (e.g., Heaven). In turn, I hypothesized that women, but not men, would be perceived as having less soul when focus is on their physical appearance, and that this will be mediated by human nature traits. Partially supporting these hypotheses, in Study 1, males and females were perceived as having (marginally) less of a soul when focus was on their appearance; however, there was no effect of appearance focus on human nature ratings for male or female targets. In Study 2, using a different manipulation of appearance focus and measure of soul ratings, the same findings emerged. In Study 3, focusing on a woman's appearance elicited heightened psychological need for structure and worldview defense when evidence was provided that she had a soul, compared to when evidence was provided that she did not have a soul. This indicates that a woman having a soul is less coherent and meaningful than a woman not having soul when focus is on her appearance. The discussion centers on possible mechanisms for these findings, as well as why the effects were found for male in addition to female targets. Limitations, future directions, and implications are also addressed.

Our thesis aims to analyze the relationship between the divine and the human, political and sexual, as well as the relationships established between these plans and the dramatic text from the comedy skit Lysistrata, written by the Greek poet Aristophanes. It is due to show how textual and discursive elements are crucial for the development of the female characters who are opposed to the male characters, either by speech or symbolic images, since the ideal hero to the public administration of the city. It dialogues to some aspects of comic irony, such as the exaggeration and pun, to demonstrate how these elements work together as a discourse, which is an important characteristic for the composition of the part and which by women take the power of the city. We try to analyze the images related to the weave- spin that exemplifies the relationship between creating / narration, in order to demonstrate the feminine imagery that makes up the work. We used, as a guide for our research, the concepts of hero, arete, identity and imagination to confirm our thinking about the social and political aspects of women in ancient Greece. Among the theoretical underpinning our research are the classic reference works such as Homer and Hesiod , the studies of Vernant (1977, 2001) , Silva (1983, 2007), BrandÃo ( 1985, 1987 ) and POMPEU (1997, 2004).
Abstract:
In The Pearl Button, Patricio Guzman explores the role water played in shaping how the Selk’nam inhabited the coasts of the Tierra del Fuego in Patagonia through “cosmovisions,’ sequences that extend beyond human perception, even as they link the habitation of indigenous peoples to subsequent colonial and political projects. Guzman’s “cosmovisual aesthetic” warrants dissection in the form of a video essay because of its complicated interplay between editing and shot distance, which establishes a critical bioregionalism that acknowledges the unique qualities of place, here the Tierra del Fuego, as well as the forces of globalization that threaten it. Guzman’s cosmovisual aesthetic ranges from extreme close-ups to reveal minute details in objects to aerial shots that articulate the shapes of coasts and even to telescopic shots depicting planets and nebulae. He works with archival photography and the superimposition of images/sounds in order to create a pluriverse of peoples and environments, which moves beyond human audiovisual and temporal perception. In doing so, The Pearl Button links the ways in which the Selk’nam inhabited Chile, depending on its waters, to the ocean as the source of the colonial project of Spain and site of political murders under the later dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Guzman’s cinematic elaboration of Indigenous worldviews resonates with contemporary Chilean philosophers Humberto Maturana, Francisco Varela, and Ricardo Rozzi. From cybernetics to ecological philosophy, this video essay weaves the insights of these Chilean philosophers with Guzman’s cosomovisions in order to highlight the complex ecological insights at the intersection of Indigenous thought and film form. In particular, it extends Rozzi’s practical model of Field Environmental Philosophy to communicating ecological philosophy through media.

Abstract: The Hieroì Lógoi of Aelius Aristides, composed ca. 170 C.E., constitute an autobiographical narrative dedicated to Asclepius, whose sanctuary, in Pergamon, the author visited many times throughout his life. As he turns to the god in search of his famous dream cures, Aristides is transformed through a favoritism and intimacy relationship with Asclepius which ultimately identifies them. This identification, bodily seen and felt by Aristides, is permeated by paradoxical and inapprehensible values from the perspective of systematic elaboration. Therefore, it is understood as an initiation into a mystery which is in close relation to the Asclepieia¿s material culture, as in Pergamon and Epidauros. In these spaces there are available meanings and practices in circulation whose dynamics result not only in the production of materiality but, also, in the fashioning of individuals who, as they deal with it, are constituted by it. This circular relation with the material world trespasses the sanctuaries¿ context and may be also observed in the Hieroì Lógoi text itself as a human product and, at the same time, it's producer. Autobiography is offered, therefore, as a privileged locus for the reflection on the modes of existence and fashioning of the Self as being in the world. At the same time, as this autobiography is composed by discourses which combine supernatural features and elements which transform the Self into something beyond human, it must be approached as part of the ancient self-occupation in the Greco-Roman world. This taking and occupation of the Self dispenses the systematic elaboration of a theoretical knowledge and simultaneously grounds all reflection on the problem of the Self from the first-person perspective. Aristides¿ identification with Asclepius engages in important themes to these inquiries: unity, continuity and the Self¿s impermeability, often contested by ideas of plurality, fragmentation and openness. These reflections frequently construct hypothesis regarding individual agency and autonomy, on the one hand, and vulnerability towards the gods, on the other. As Aristides¿ identification with Asclepius occurs, mostly, trough face-to-face visuality, comes to light the necessity to question mortality and immortality as antithetical pairs dependent on notions about otherness peculiar to the subject / object dichotomy. Therefore, from Aristides¿ paradoxical discourse on his experiences, which reactualizes ancient perspectives on the limits between gods and men as flexible, contested and even virtually absent, we assert an approach towards mortality and immortality as incommensurable pairs which constitute the Self in the Hieroì Lógoi. This approach allows us to consider mortality immortality as a particular expression of treatment, taking and occupancy of the Self which is prior, independent and non-constituent of systematized and discursively built alterity. The Hieroì Lógoi present themselves, therefore, as the narrative materiality of Self-possibilities arisen in this second-century man's dream and devotion

This research analyzes the Joker’s figurations of cruelty in the comic book Batman: A Piada Mortal (Batman: The Killing Joke, 1988). The cruelty of this character, understood as the wish to cause pain and suffering to another, has his own style in his lewd speech, in the following of an aesthetic of horror by the image-synthesis of his red rictus shaped mouth, as well as a plot that stages rituals of exhibitionism and sadism, in which the Joker's victims are offered in honor to Batman. This research contributes to the study of the villain in superhero genre comics, a character who, among clashes and truces with the hero, creates a field of tension that moves a suspenseful narrative of action and twists with an appeasing ending that invites the reader to the next adventure of the series. Cruelty is the Joker’s passion that wants to destabilize and corrupt the hero, composing the dynamics of a dense, ambiguous and sinister relationship between Batman and him. The aim of this research lies in this: what makes the Joker’s cruelty so outstanding in his relationship with Batman? By which means this cruelty determines and qualifies the Joker criminal acts, modifying his bound with the hero over the comics? The goal is to delimit the Joker’s imponderable of cruelty through its figurations that make him the quintessential villain in Batman stories. A two-way theoretical foundation was used: the via governed by image, professed by Thierry Groensteen, examining the complex system of narrative in which the drawing and the words are networked, and the psychoanalytical via in the Lacan’s trait unaire and perversion concepts, with the support of the Joker character’s approach to the literary figure of the sadean libertine

In this research we examine the mortal soul and its disorders (pathémata) in Plato's Timaeus, to show that in this dialogue Plato extends the concept of death (thánatos) to explain the bond (syndouménes) and the association or communion (koinonía) between the mortal soul and the body. Plato relates the notion of death to the field of philosophy, so that on the one hand, the attribute mortal indicates the composition of human body and of all physical, visible and tangible beings; and sustains the state of dissolution and corruption of these (Timaeus 42e - 43a). Whereas on the other hand it indicates the intrinsic association (koinonía) between the deadly form of the body and mind both of distinct natures. This makes us infer that the deadly attribute (thnetón) is not used by Plato to designate the death of the mortal soul génos (téns psychéns thnetòn génos, Timaeus 69 d-e). Nowhere in the passages of the Timaeus Plato says that the eidos/génos of mortal soul is an elementary being and therefore, is natural to the human body and other beings. In a kind of divine and philosophical demiurge, Plato mixes psychic and physical aspects and demonstrates that the soul of mortal eidos is stuck in the body (sôma) through the medulla (myelós) and that the bonds of every human soul is anchored (ankurôn) in the bone marrow. Thus, the mortal soul feels and vigorates all body parts and accepts the disorders (pathémata) arising from its union with Soma. This reflection helps Plato demonstrate how the body affects the soul (psyché) and how affections (páthos) and passions (tà pathé) are born. It also helps him clarify the true meaning of mortal attributes (tòn thnetón) in relation to the form of mortal soul. Hence, the mortal attribute does not express the death (thánatos) of eídos/génos of mortal humon soul. It is just a Platonic dialectics of action encountered in the psychic tendencies of each of us that explains the complex union of thánatos with psyché sôma, aimed at the formation of virtuous and righteous citizens, the sole purpose (télos) of his philosophy.

Abstract:

Simulations of the nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation method is an important part of a digital laboratory developed by Numerical Rocks. The laboratory is used to model petrophysical properties and simulating fluid flow in the pore scale of reservoir rocks. The nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation method can be simulated on a computer using a method involving random walkers. This computer simulation can be parallelized to reduce computational time. The aim of this study has been to examine how overlapping boundaries affects speed-up and communication in a parallel simulation of random walkers. Several parallel algorithms have been proposed and implemented. It was found that an overlapping partitioning of the problem is recommended, and that communication decreases exponentially with increasing overlap. However, increased overlap resulted only in a small negative impact on memory usage and speed-up.

Abstract:
The period of tumultuous religious reformation during which George Herbert lived demanded of people a strict adherence to the paradigmatic structures that prescribed the ways in which public displays of religious conviction were to be manifested. The freedom, indeed the necessity, to doubt is taken for granted by the modern reader, but for Herbert it was a matter of spiritual life and death. As country parson, he diligently labored to guide his parishioners, administer the sacraments, and exemplify the “right path.” This persona—reinforced by necessarily performative, faith-demonstrating actions—is continually destabilized by the experience of doubt, which leads Herbert to address his own persistent despair at the absence of God through poetry. His masterful use of the structural and thematic patterns of the Psalms in many of the poems of The Temple draws on the rich tradition of lament in contrast to the prescriptive, ideological agendas of the Book of Common Prayer and the Common Lectionary which privilege faith. The poems demonstrate an extensive knowledge of the epistemological foundations and history of both official Church doctrine and of medieval mystical thought and become a tool for exploring the paradoxes of human existence. His philosophical and rhetorical engagement with the Christological and ecclesiastical theology specific to Dionysian mysticism demonstrates the intensity of Herbert’s preoccupation with Divine absence and his near obsessive search for the ideal apophatic presence, that silent, knowing-unknowing that defines oneness with God. Nowhere are Herbert’s existential dilemmas more evident than in Memoriae Matris Sacrum, a sequence of poems written immediately following the death of his beloved mother, which reveals an inner life of the poet that his more controlled poetic voice of The Temple often conceals. These elegiac poems, written in Latin and Greek, show the poet as a “mourning child” and lay bare his most intimate fears about the constancy of his own faith and the uncertain terms of Christian death and resurrection embodied in the sacred ritual of the Eucharist. The poetic closure often ascribed to Herbert’s poems in fact disguises the nature of spiritual and psychological dilemmas which remain for Herbert persistent and unresolved.

In this reflection on the despair in human existence, a way of living that does not annul what man is, spirit, synthesis, was asked and proposed, but he established it in the direction of the transcendent - God. The risk of inauthenticity, however, was made explicit, provoking in the individual the feeling of despair, which becomes more serious the more he withdraws from his self and consecutively from his Author. But it was also spoken of a man inattentive and, however noticeable and clear the signs of transcendence are, it seems that he does not see them, or because of the values exchanged between the temporal and the eternal, he ends up deceiving himself and distancing himself from his Me, becoming a desperate.

Abstract:
This essay explores how the reader cognitively reacts to reading H. P. Lovecraft’s horror story “The Shadow Out of Time” (1936). I analyse the text to see how it invites readers to beaffected by it. I specifically look at invitations to envisionment, subjective experience andintersubjectivity. The literary horror terms uncertainty and uncanniness are used inconjunction with cognitive theory to explain how the readers may react to readingLovecraft’s stories. These are in turn reinforced by the reader's ongoing envisionment of thestory, and their sharing of the character’s experiences via subjective experience. For example, the separation between the mind and body of the protagonist creates an uncanny dissonanceto his own identity, which disrupts the reader’s understanding of the character. This maycause distress in the reader due to the subjective experience that connects the reader to thecharacter. Additionally, the disrupted sense of reality in the book affects the narrator'sperceptions of both his surroundings and his own mental faculties. Subsequently, the reader’sunderstanding of the text is also in a state of flux which affects their envisionment of thestory. This disrupts understanding and may enhance feelings of unease. My theory istherefore that unease is invited by certain horror techniques, such as uncertainty anduncanniness, which in turn influence the reader specifically through subjective experienceand envisionment.

The transmedia narrative has transformed the way of telling a story in advertising. Against this and with a strong influence on the part of the cinema, video games have adopted trailers as the main element of advertising. Such is the case of the launch campaign for Mortal Kombat 11, which takes social media as its main means of dissemination, especially Facebook and YouTube. In the development of this campaign, narrative compression and expansion strategies are present, which have a direct impact on the perception of gamers. This allows them to take the message as their own and give themselves the freedom to create their own content, such as fanarts, summaries, theories, among others, that manage to expand the narrative universe of Mortal Kombat. Abstract:

This research explored the use of mindfulness to confront mortality. Through attention, curiosity and non-judgment, mindfulness increases awareness of thoughts, feelings and sensations. Given the automaticity of fear and the suffering that can arise in response to death, this study piloted two mindfulness exercises.

It employed a convergent parallel design to analyze qualitative and quantitative data collected from 20 adults, born between 1946 and 1964. After being interviewed about their mortality, participants were randomly assigned to receive either a mindfulness of breath induction, or a mindfulness of mortality induction. Interviews captured responses to the two exercises. Participants completed a demographics questionnaire, and the 21-item State Mindfulness Scale, administered post-induction. Data was analyzed to identify themes, and develop theory about using mindfulness to confront mortality.

Results from the research illuminated the overwhelming value for reflecting on death, and appreciation for a facilitated contemplative exercise. Pre-induction interviews revealed that, in response to thinking about death, subjects oriented around life values and living with purpose. Memories of loss, and relationships were salient. They articulated ambivalence toward thinking about death due to a lack of control, but were able to hold multiple emotions including fear, gratitude and curiosity.

It was concluded that both mindfulness exercises were meritorious, but had somewhat differing effects. Both inductions produced metacognitive and meta-affective awareness, reflective of the construct of mindfulness; both inductions stimulated memories, emotions, cognitive activity, and body awareness. The mindfulness of breath induction seemed to be calming, with more awareness of the body, associations to other meditative practices, and less cognitive activity. Results suggested that it was effective in stimulating state mindfulness in terms of the present condition of the mind and of the body. The mindfulness of mortality exercise evoked a more challenging experience, that most participants found beneficial. It was associated with a variety of emotions, including sadness, fear, peace, and gratitude. It stimulated cognitive processing, and associations to participants’ diverse religious and spiritual identities. As interventions for a population that feels there is value in reflecting on mortality, both may be applied successfully in clinical practice.

Abstract:
My research project focuses on the significance of the role of mortal wives of the gods in 13th century Emar and Thebes in the Third Intermediate and early Late Period. I will analyse how the gods’ human “wives” were thought to provide a direct link between their communities and the divine. The starting point of the investigation will be a brief overview of the history of the two cities and their marriage practices, as well as some religious functions and rituals similar to the ones that will be considered in the case studies. The first case study will focus on the ritual for the installation of the Storm-god’s high priestess (NIN.DINGIR) in Emar, Syria, from the 13th century BC. The second case study will focus on the role of the God’s Wife of Amun in Thebes, Egypt, as attested on the stela of Nitocris, daughter of the Saite king Psamtik in the 7th century BC. The aim of the examination of these two cultic offices is to detect the way in which humans and gods interacted through women. This allows the interpretation of ancient religious practices as a form of diplomacy featuring two social spheres: the human and the divine. The last chapter will analyse the similarities and differences between the two offices, focusing on the social significance of the existence of practices envisioning a woman as a mortal wife of a deity. This comparative analysis will provide a better understanding of the social implications of cultic offices involving women as well as their crucial role in the establishment of solid relations with the gods.

Abstract:
This work argues that the cognitive theoretical approach called enactivism is the most functional to interpret contemporary YA speculative fiction. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter saga, Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments esalogy and Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games trilogy are the three case studies here analyzed. My original contribution to the rich debate on YA speculative fiction concerns the specific slant I propose which complements the many different perspectives already existing, from feminist, to socialist, to religious, posthumanist, to name a few; all of these perspectives take into consideration mostly one particular theme at a time, and the link between YA production and children’s literature. I argue that an enactivist perspective can provide an explanation for the increasing diffusion of these narratives among young adults but especially among adults, thanks to the focus on the interaction between text and reader, and also between readers and their contemporary environment; from this last interaction, also a multiplicity of themes usually conveyed by these narratives can be explained. I start from an explanation of Marco Caracciolo’s The Experientiality of Narrative, which provides the reader the basic tenets of enactivism in literature, then I proceed with mapping YA literature and speculative fiction considering their origins, narrative techniques and empathic bonds established with readers, to come eventually to focus on close readings and take a closer look at the themes in the three case studies I selected.

Serrano, Pariente José. "Asma de riesgo vital. Caracterización e identificación de los fenotipos implicados." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/4549.

Full text
Abstract:
Although in most cases asthma is a mild disease, and patients can lead a normal life with an appropriate treatment, there are other very severe forms of the disease. In certain circumstances, patients can even die as a result of asthma, or suffer such intense exacerbations that can seriously compromise his life. Previous studies have analyzed this kind of asthma, called life-threatening asthma (LTA). Their results show that the etiology and the pathogenesis of LTA are not homogenous. We would be able to establish, therefore, that the life-threatening asthma is a "mixed bag" with different clinical and pathological subtypes of patients. In order to verify this hypothesis, a prospective, multicentric, nation-wide study was designed. For two years, we collected 236 episodes of LTA from 33 hospitals in Spain. LTA was defined as acute asthma crisis with at least one of the following consequences: to) death of the patient; b) hipercapnia higher than 50 mm Hg and/or respiratory acidosis with pH lower than 7,30, c) respiratory arrest and d) need for mechanical ventilation. The analysis of the demographic, clinical, functional, immunological and psychological characteristics of the patients allowed to establish different phenotypes of the LTA:
1) Episodes of rapid-onset fatal and near-fatal asthma (in less than 2 hours) are frequent: 20% of cases were presented in this way. These episodes, also, had differences with slow-onset asthma attacks: the triggers of exacerbation, their intensity and the outcome were different.
2) Alexithymia, a psychological trait characterised by a difficulty in recognising and describing body sensations and emotions, is more frequent in patients with LTA that in the rest of asthmatics. Its presence, on the other hand, was associated with recurrent episodes of very severe asthma exacerbations.
3) The sensitization to the fungus Alternaria alternata can be related with some LTA episodes. Patients that suffer them show a particular clinical profile: they are younger and improve quicker, although they can die or present serious neurological sequels more frequently.
4) Menstruation may have a role as a contributing factor in the development of LTA crisis in patients with unstable asthma.

INDELs are length polymorphisms, generated from insertions and/or deletions of one or more nucleotides. The INDEL markers, which are widely distributed throughout the genome and characterized by high stability due to their low mutational rate (10-9), can be analyzed based on amplification by PCR (Polimerase Chain Reaction). This ease in being analyzed and the possibility of building multiplex systems capable of generating short amplicons (smaller than 100 pb), render INDELs an important tool for DNA-based human identification. So as to evaluate the efficiency and validate the methodology which makes use of insertion/deletion polymorphisms in human identification, we have employed the Indel-plex ID system, capable of simultaneously amplifying 38 INDEL loci of biallelic autosome chromosomes. Different biological samples (hair, saliva, blood, semen and urine) were genotyped showing reproducibility of all typing. The minimum DNA concentration for the amplification of the 38 INDEL loci is 0,5 ng. Artifacts of the split peaks type were observed in some samples. The purification of the PCRs products in Sephadex resin provided better conditions for analysis, reduction of artifacts and increased the average intensity of allele fluorescence. The efficiency of the Indel-plex ID system in the amplification of degraded DNA was verified in analysis of DNA samples extracted from mortal remains (bones and teeth). In comparison with the Identifiler system, the Indel-plex ID has proven more efficient in terms of the number of genotyped loci and amplification quality. During the investigation of genetic relations, carried out with the Indel-plex ID system, it was possible to corroborate previous results obtained through the analysis of STR markers. In investigations based on in vitro samples, maximum values of 99,99998% in Paternity Probabilities were obtained. In genetic investigations related to deceased supposed parents, the Indel-plex ID system corroborated results obtained with the Identifiler and Minifiler systems. The Paternity Probability of 99,953% obtained with the Indel-plex ID system, allied with the Paternity Probability of 99,957% obtained with the Minifiler rendered possible the final indicator of 99,99998%. The results have made evident that the INDEL loci of the Indel-plex ID system are highly informative and constitute an important tool for studies in both human identification and parenthood relations identification

Chiotis, Vangelis. "Morals by convention : the rationality of moral behaviour." Thesis, University of York, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3913/.

Full text
Abstract:
The account of rational morality presented in Morals by Agreement is based, to a large extent, on the concept of constrained maximisation. Rational agents are assumed to have reasons to constrain their maximisation provided they interact with other similarly disposed agents. On this account, rational agents will internalise a disposition to behave as constrained maximisers. The assertion of constrained maximisation is problematic and unrealistic mainly because it does not explain how the process of internalisation occurs. I propose an amended version of constrained maximisation that is based on a conventional understanding of social behaviour and the social contract. Repeated interactions between rational agents lead to the creation of social conventions, which in turn serve as supportive mechanisms for behaviours that reinforce their stability. In addition, established social conventions facilitate and ensure information sharing, thus making it possible for conventional agents to know others' dispositions. The development and establishment of social conventions are best described and explained through an evolutionary account of social structures. The evolutionary account offers a more powerful and more realistic method of discussing cultural evolution, since it considers large populations over long periods of time and the interdependence between social structures and individual behaviour. In this context, information availability ensures that the most efficient conventions take over and maximising strategies become dominant. While for Gauthier moral behaviour depends on constrained maximisation, in the conventional account of morality it comes about as a result of repeated interactions between rational agents within the bounds of social conventions.

This thesis proposes to investigate, with mainstay in theoretical research and literature, the despair and anguish, based on the philosophy of Kierkegaard (1.813-1.855). These two issues are discussed by him in La Maladie the La Mort, under the pseudonym Anti-Climacus, and in Le concept d'Angoisse under the pseudonym of Vigilius Haufniensis. Both the despair, as the existential anguish are real problems which, sooner or later, the individual, as possessor of mind, hopelessly experience and are therefore aspects of the human condition. Kierkegaard understood the desperation as a deadly disease and identifies it with sin, whose faith is the antidote. Already the anguish is understood as the feeling that accompanies all human decisions

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is devoted to studying synchronizing words for finite automata and variable-length codes. Intuitively, a synchronizing word is a word such that its application brings a system into some particular state regardless of its initial state. A code or automaton is synchronizing if it admits a synchronizing word. There is a deep connection between the concrete implementations of this notion for finite automata and variable-length codes, and the use of it is one of the leitmotifs of this thesis. One of the main tools for dealing with variable-length codes is assigning a special automaton preserving many synchronization properties to it. For finite codes, this is done using prefix automata. We investigate two fundamental problems about synchronization. The first one is measuring the length of shortest synchronizing words for synchronizing automata and codes. For the case of complete deterministic finite automata, the Černý conjecture, one of the oldest problems in combinatorial automata theory, proposes a quadratic upper bound in terms of the number of states in the automaton. We broaden this conjecture to partial deterministic finite automata and then to unambiguous non-deterministic finite automata. We show polynomial upper bounds for mentioned classes in the presence of strong connectivity, and discuss their connections with the original Černý conjecture. The relation with finite codes allows us to show similar bounds in terms of the sum of the lengths of the codewords, as well as in terms of the length of the longest codeword. The second case is related to another important conjecture stated by Restivo. It deals with mortal words instead of synchronizing ones, the case which we also investigate. For most of these settings we also examine the computational complexity of finding short synchronizing words, which is the second fundamental question investigated in this thesis. Besides that, we study various generalization of the notion of a synchronizing word, which allow to use some partial information about the current state of an automaton. For several such generalizations we show strong computational complexity lower bounds even in very restricted cases

Grigoletto, Simone. "Only Through Moral Complexity: The Case of Supererogation." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3425231.

Full text
Abstract:
The present research work will focus on two morally relevant issues: the nature of the experience of a moral agents and a possible account of the concept of supererogation. Even if, at a preliminary stage, these two subjects look to be unrelated, it will become clear how they both are expressions of the complexity typical of the moral domain. I will endorse, as a starting point, the approach of moral phenomenology as defined by Maurice Mandelbaum. A phenomenological study is then intended as the analysis of what it is like to perform a given act from the perspective of the first-person. Accordingly, the experience of the moral agent appears to be manifold and heterogeneous. On a normative level, the best moral account that allows the management and the comprehension of such complexity seems to be moral pluralism. In particular, I will distinguish between two sorts of pluralism: methodological pluralism (about the different ways of moral reasoning) and axiological pluralism (about the different values that we take to have ultimate relevance). These denominations represent two ways of understanding morality in virtue of its complexity. As such, the approach of moral complexity relies on the acknowledgment of the manifold structure of morality. In this regard, I will consider the account offered by Charles Larmore in his Patterns of Moral Complexity. His admission of different and equally valid moral principles does not only explain something essential about our moral experience, but it will also become particularly helpful as I will try to apply his theory to the justification of supererogatory acts. Supererogation, as I will highlight, is a moral concept that relies on the existence of the many levels of morality and on the many possible achievements of the good. In this way, a clear distinction between the Right and the Good will provide the theoretical space for this category of acts. I will define this as the need of complexity, that is, the need of a multilevel theoretical structure that resembles the distinction between precepts and concepts that gave birth to the concept in the Christian tradition. I will try to show how the loss of moral complexity is the first responsible of the theoretical struggles that the major monist theories (in particular Utilitarianism and Kantian Ethics) face when confronted with the justification of supererogatory acts. These theoretical approaches usually tend to be anti-supererogationists for a clear reason. When the level of the Right and the level of the Good merge into the same category there is no easy way to give an account of morally good acts that go beyond the call of duty. I believe that the endorsement of a pluralist system will solve the so-called problem of supererogation by reestablishing a clear distinction between the two faces of morality: the deontic and the evaluative. This is why, in the final chapter, I will introduce the Multiple Sources Dynamics as possible explanation, on a normative level, of how supererogatory acts can be performed. A system that provides multiple sources of the good has the tools to explain the establishment of our moral obligations and, at the same time, it can explain how we are able to see and foster some other good that lies beyond the level of requirements. In the present work, moral pluralism will be taken to be a sort of inference to best explanation of different morally relevant issues. This claim will be warranted by highlighting how moral pluralism can explain why our moral experience is so essentially complex (to the point of facing true moral dilemmas) and by showing how it can provide a satisfactory account of the concept supererogation. If these two subjects (which will be considered, at this point, directly related) are proved to hold true, the endorsement of a pluralist system will be considered the preferable option over the other normative systems.

Thesis, Paris 4, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA040122.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to develop a theory in order to describe, explain, and regulate moral disagreements. Ours is an empirical approach to moral disagreement, based mainly on empirical data provided by social and moral psychology. The morphology of moral disagreement (part 1) reveals that it is drawn from polemical imagination, which consists of three key elements: analogy, metaphor, and symbol. Such hybridization gives birth to symbolic networks, organizing the relationship between the moral opponents. The genealogy of moral disagreement (part 2) aims to determine the sources of these symbolic networks. We will analyse the psychological, anthropological, and socio-historical processes underlying the moral disagreements. The key role of family – as matrix, model and object of disagreement – will be emphasized. The polemology of moral disagreement (part 3) attempts to reorganize the symbolic networks through a pragmatic and normative approach. We will analyse the procedures in view of a regulation including the transformation of polemical imagination into consensual imagination. Thus, moral disagreement must be reasserted, before any attempt to rehumanising the moral field.Key-words: moral disagreement, moral philosophy, social psychology, moral psychology, imagination, analogy, metaphor, symbol, family

Abstract:
This thesis examines the outlook for moral and civic education: the announcement of a teaching of secular ethics in a secular moral education and moral and civic education, programs of editorial projects have undergone several mutations both in terms of form, that regarding the content itself and deserve more attention than special. If the implementation of this public policy has hardly done without "ambush" the question is to ask one hand on the contributions of this moral and civic education which replaces the old "triple cord" that was civics, civic education, and legal and social civic education, and also to question the real dimension of this teaching: can he like his grandfather; "Secular morality" under Jules Ferry, lie somehow in his parentage and education in responsible freedom, while adapting to today's society?
