Abstract:
This study investigates the portrayal of Pakistan and Talibanization in American writer, Greg Mortenson’s Three Cups of Tea (2006). The study reveals how Mortenson treated Talibanization and anti-Americanism in Pakistan during his travel and stay in Pakistan. The text was analysed thematically through Braun and Clarke’s model, using Edward Said’s concepts of Orientalism as a basic framework. The selected work depicts that Talibanization and anti-Americanism as depicted by Mortenson do not correspond with the timeline of the travelogue. Moreover, unlike his claim of Pakistan is a dangerous place, he has been welcomed by the public and left totally unharmed. The only instance of hostility (his abduction) was unrelated to his nationality and Talibanization. To make his work more relatable to the time of its publication, the author has been involved in overstating as well as deliberate additions of events.

Abstract The review-essay considers Capturing the Beat Moment: Cultural Politics and the Poetics of Presence, by Erik Mortenson, as a vehicle not only to assess Mortenson's text but also to explore the current state of the field of Beat studies. Specifically, this review-essay addresses the roles of graduate programs, the early reputation of Beat writers as nonacademic no-nothings, the quality of seminal studies of Beat literature, and the popular and academic publishing worlds—all of which have contributed to an erosion of scholarly standards in the field.

Global engineers must be taught to consider the historical and present causes of persistent poverty and systematic barriers to prosperity. Such training will better inform the choices engineers make and help move the engineering sector away from a product and community-level focus towards working to address the root causes of poverty. A framing for Global Engineering has recently been proposed by the Mortenson Center in Global Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, building on over 15 years of curricular efforts. Global Engineering, as taught by the Mortenson Center, positions the field as a complement to Global Health and Development Economics while further embracing a historically contextualized and anti-colonial training.

Abstract:
In this project I identify the pedagogical techniques, philosophy and legacy of Raymond Crisara. I examine how his pedagogical philosophy led to Crisara's personal success as a teacher and to his students' success in their performing and teaching careers. In much the same way that Ernest Williams's legacy has been passed on to his students, Crisara's legacy is now being handed down. I have examined Crisara's pedagogical concepts and philosophy through the eyes of four former students: Dr. Todd Hastings (Professor, Pittsburg State University), Billy Hunter (Principal Trumpet, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Dr. Gary Mortenson (Dean of the School of Music, Baylor University) and Keith Winking (Professor, Texas State University) as well as from transcripts of interviews Crisara gave. Crisara extended and modified William's pedagogy through the use of a multitude of étude methods. This modification and Crisara's experience as a leading New York freelance musician greatly influenced the teaching and success of the four subjects I interviewed. While these teachers have adopted Crisara's pedagogy and philosophy largely unchanged, I found that they modified his pedagogy slightly through the use of added teaching materials never used in Crisara's career or teaching studio.

Abstract:

This essay deals with wage dispersion, the Burdett-Mortensen model is applied to a set of data collected from the year 1973 – 1989. The Burdett-Mortensen model aims to explain the reasons for wage dispersion between similar able individuals. The purpose of this essay is to test the Burdett-Mortensen model accuracy in explaining wage dispersion between similar able people, by applying it to male supervisors in Sweden between 1973 and 1989. The results of this test are mixed, meaning that no clear judgment can be done to validate or reject the accuracy of the assumptions made by the authors of this model. These results leads to the conclusion that further more expansive test of this model is required to make such a judgement.

Molinder, Anna. "Med handen för munnen : En studie av sju barnböcker för åldersgruppen 6–9 år ur ett normkritiskt genusmaktperspektiv." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för språk, litteratur och interkultur, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-54886.

Full text
Abstract:
In this essay seven children’s books aimed at the age group 6-9 years are read using a matrix to determine if the characters, from a viewpoint considering current gender norms and power, are normative, norm-breaking or falsely norm-breaking. The latter means that they have been attributed transgressive characteristics without there being any shift in power balance from the masculine to the feminine. Results show that the authors have tried to break gender norms, for example with regards to the child -characters’ clothes, which are consistently very alike regardless of gender. These efforts remain shallow as the power still rests with the boys, whose awareness of their own position within the gender -power system give them a sense of intrinsic power (power-to). The female characters reflect societal gender norms by being self-effacing, compliant and reactive, for example by praising the boys, providing them with room to be competent as well as both silencing themselves and letting themselves be silenced. The boy -characters show falsely norm-breaking behaviour in some areas, for example by having atypically broad emotional spectra, yet the boys’ superiority is retained and is reflected in their behaviour towards the female characters.

Mortensen, Clifton H. "A Computational Fluid Dynamics Feature Extraction Method Using Subjective Logic." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2208.

Full text
Abstract:
Computational fluid dynamics simulations are advancing to correctly simulate highly complex fluid flow problems that can require weeks of computation on expensive high performance clusters. These simulations can generate terabytes of data and pose a severe challenge to a researcher analyzing the data. Presented in this document is a general method to extract computational fluid dynamics flow features concurrent with a simulation and as a post-processing step to drastically reduce researcher post-processing time. This general method uses software agents governed by subjective logic to make decisions about extracted features in converging and converged data sets. The software agents are designed to work inside the Concurrent Agent-enabled Feature Extraction concept and operate efficiently on massively parallel high performance computing clusters. Also presented is a specific application of the general feature extraction method to vortex core lines. Each agent's belief tuple is quantified using a pre-defined set of information. The information and functions necessary to set each component in each agent's belief tuple is given along with an explanation of the methods for setting the components. A simulation of a blunt fin is run showing convergence of the horseshoe vortex core to its final spatial location at 60% of the converged solution. Agents correctly select between two vortex core extraction algorithms and correctly identify the expected probabilities of vortex cores as the solution converges. A simulation of a delta wing is run showing coherently extracted primary vortex cores as early as 16% of the converged solution. Agents select primary vortex cores extracted by the Sujudi-Haimes algorithm as the most probable primary cores. These simulations show concurrent feature extraction is possible and that intelligent agents following the general feature extraction method are able to make appropriate decisions about converging and converged features based on pre-defined information.

Ever since the technique of Kalman-Bucy filter was popularized, there has been an intense interest in finding new classes of finite dimensional filters. Among new ideas for extending Kalman filtering to nonlinear filtering, the conditional density approach, via the Duncan-Mortensen-Zakai(D-M-Z) equation , is more attractable. In this thesis,we study the solution of Robust-Duncan-Mortensen-Zakai(R-D-M-Z)equation.For finite time interval, the solution is reduced to solve the R-D-M-Z equation in a memoryless manner, which can be computed off -line. By taking a partition of time, the solution of the R-D-M-Z equation in each interval may converge to the solution of the original R-D-M-Z equation in pointwise sense if the partition norm is approaching to zero. The above conclusion was solved by Shing-Tung Yau and Stephen S.-T Yau. Moreover, we study a general finite nonlinear filtering system considered by Chiou, which includes Yau filtering. We construct a finite dimensional recursive filter under special conditions by solving the D-M-Z equation in terms of a system of ordinary differential equations and a Kolmogorov-type equation. The above conclusion was solved by Chiou.

Abstract:
Chapter four takes up the interest in second hand life narratives of girls exemplified by Greg Mortenson’s Three Cups of Tea and Nicholas Kristof’s Half the Sky and argues that humanitarian campaigns now promote ever purer (and younger) victims as deserving of empathy and Western intervention. The chapter goes on to identifiy the preference for blameless witnesses, sufficiently innocent to arouse nearly universal sympathy and often the victims of profoundly unsympathetic criminals populate accounts by Mortenson and Kristof, specifically by examining the “Three Cups of Tea” scandal. The chapter also theorizes that girls and women spark international awareness campaigns, as they should, but that humanitarian efforts like Mortenson’s do not necessarily operate in concert with local efforts at feminist reform. Finally, the chapter posits the appeal of the proxy witness: the man who speaks on behalf of girls and women who, in a turn of the humanitarian screw, is not so much their proxy as they are his.

Abstract This chapter looks at Marilyn Monroe’s unsettled early years and her ongoing fascination with film. From foster homes to an early marriage and wartime work, the former Norma Jeane Mortenson progressed to work as a model and, finally, as a lower-rung contract player at Twentieth Century-Fox. Her “discoverer,” Ben Lyon, saw to her renaming, and she had at least two fleeting film roles plus a brief, high-profile radio appearance. After Fox dropped her, she moved to a six-month contract at Columbia Pictures, where she costarred in a low-budget musical, Ladies of the Chorus. That film provides an early extended look at Monroe as actor, singer, and dancer, and it introduced her to a major early mentor, acting coach Natasha Lytess.

Abstract:
As a journalist, poet, playwright and Bible translator, the Norwegian theologian Ivar Mortensson-Egnund (1857–1934) was an important figure in the Norwegian nynorsk language movement. Mortensson translated about a third of the Old Testament from Hebrew into nynorsk, but most of this work remained unpublished and is probably lost. The article documents the extent of his Bible translations and discusses his translation practice. Mortensson is seen as a proponent of a romantic hermeneutics in the tradition of Schleiermacher. Translations of Bible passages are also important elements in his literary works, both in an early “anarchist” period and in a later “mystical” period.

Abstract:
Micro-engineered devices (MED) are seeing a significant growth in performing separation processes1. Such devices have been implemented in a range of applications from chemical catalytic reactors to product purification systems like microdistillation. One of the biggest advantages of these devices is the dominance of capillarity and interfacial tension forces. A field where MEDs have been used is in gas-liquid separations. These are encountered, for example, after a chemical reactor, where a gaseous component being produced needs immediate removal from the reactor, because it can affect subsequent reactions. The gaseous phase can be effectively removed using an MED with an array of microcapillaries. Phase-separation can then be brought about in a controlled manner along these capillary structures. For a device made from a hydrophilic material (e.g. Si or glass), the wetted phase (e.g. water) flows through the capillaries, while the non-wetted dispersed phase (e.g. gas) is prevented from entering the capillaries, due to capillary pressure. Separation of liquid-liquid flows can also be achieved via this approach. However, the underlying mechanism of phase separation is far from being fully understood. The pressure at which the gas phase enters the capillaries (gas-to-liquid breakthrough) can be estimated from the Young-Laplace equation, governed by the surface tension (γ) of the wetted phase, capillary width (d) and height (h), and the interface equilibrium contact angle (θeq). Similarly, the liquid-to-gas breakthrough pressure (i.e. the point at which complete liquid separation ceases and liquid exits through the gas outlet) can be estimated from the pressure drop across the capillaries via the Hagen-Poiseuille (HP) equation. Several groups reported deviations from these estimates and therefore, included various parameters to account for the deviations. These parameters usually account for (i) flow of wetted phase through ‘n’ capillaries in parallel, (ii) modification of geometric correction factor of Mortensen et al., 2005 2 and (iii) liquid slug length (LS) and number of capillaries (n) during separation. LS has either been measured upstream of the capillary zone or estimated from a scaling law proposed by Garstecki et al., 2006 3. However, this approach does not address the balance between the superficial inlet velocity and net outflow of liquid through each capillary (qc). Another shortcoming of these models has been the estimation of the apparent contact angle (θapp), which plays a critical role in predicting liquid-to-gas breakthrough. θapp is either assumed to be equal to θeq or measured with various techniques, e.g. through capillary rise or a static droplet on a flat substrate, which is significantly different from actual dynamic contact angles during separation. In other cases, the Cox-Voinov model has been used to calculate θapp from θeq and capillary number. Hence, the empirical models available in the literature do not predict realistic breakthrough pressures with sufficient accuracy. Therefore, a more detailed in situ investigation of the critical liquid slug properties during separation is necessary. Here we report advancements in the fundamental understanding of two-phase separation in a gas-liquid separation (GLS) device through a theoretical model developed based on critical events occurring at the gas-liquid interfaces during separation.
