Abstract:
In a large room, on the third floor of an old woollen mill in the South West of England, nine architects spend most of their working lives, designing buildings and overseeing their construction. Asked where these come from, architects admit a kind of ignorance: 'Total magic!' as one puts it, 'Something comes from nothing!' Focusing on the everyday lives of architects, the book explores how buildings are assembled through an intimate and elusive choreography of people, materials, places, tools and ideas. Through these interactions, it asks and answers some questions of wider interest: What is the relationship between a working and a personal life? What is creativity? How is it possible to live truthfully in a world of contradiction and compromise? What does it mean to claim to know with authority? Most basically but most fundamentally the book is concerned with the question of what it is like to be an architect, and what lessons others might learn from the example their experience provides. Amongst other things, these have to do with the nature of expert knowledge, design, creativity and the central but less celebrated arts of administration.

Abstract:
The Allied occupation of Japan is remembered as the “good occupation.” An American-led coalition successfully turned a militaristic enemy into a stable and democratic ally. Of course, the story was more complicated, but the occupation did forge one of the most enduring relationships in the postwar world. Recent events, from the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan to protests over American bases in Japan to increasingly aggressive territorial disputes between Asian nations over islands in the Pacific, have brought attention back to the subject of the occupation of Japan. This book exposes the wartime origins of occupation policy and broader plans for postwar Japan. It considers the role of presidents, bureaucrats, think tanks, the media, and Congress in policymaking. Members of these elite groups came together in an informal policy network that shaped planning. Rather than relying solely on government reports and records to understand policymaking, the book also uses letters, memoirs, diaries, and manuscripts written by policymakers to trace the rise and spread of ideas across the policy network. The book contributes a new facet to the substantial literature on the occupation, serves as a case study in foreign policy analysis, and tells a surprising new story about World War II.

Abstract:
Designed for the non-specialist, the explanations and illustrations used here describe the work, personalities, collaborations, and idiosyncrasies of four of the most distinguished Nobel Laureates of the twentieth century. They exploited a discovery made over a century ago about the nature of X-rays, and thereby created a new branch of science. This enabled them to elucidate, in atomic detail, the structure and mode of action of molecules of the living world: enzymes, vitamins, and viruses, as well as antibiotics. Perutz and Kendrew, from their pioneering work using X-ray diffraction on haemoglobin and myoglobin, the proteins that transport and store oxygen in all animals, led them to establish in 1962 one of the most successful research centres ever—the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge. Medicines discovered there are used worldwide to treat leukaemia, arthritis, and other diseases. Their work also led to the creation in the United States of the Protein Data Bank that guides scientists in understanding the misfolding of proteins, which cause Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases. This book is first a memoir of these scientists and their contemporaries, many of them friends of the author. Second, it is an insight into the great excitement associated with structural molecular biology, which directly informs our understanding of ourselves. Third, it describes how two renowned research centres in the United Kingdom—the LMB and the Davy-Faraday Research Laboratory—achieved iconic status. It also highlights the importance of the popularization of science, of which Bragg, Perutz, and Kendrew, as well as Dorothy Hodgkin (who solved the structures of penicillin and vitamin B12) were experts.

Sullivan, Peg L. High Impact School Library Spaces. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400663314.

Full text
Abstract:
To keep school libraries relevant, their physical spaces need to be reinvented to mirror 21st-century learning models. This book will enable everyone from school librarians and principals to district-level administrators, architects, and interior planners of school library spaces to reconceptualize school libraries. School libraries provide invaluable benefits and services, but many of today’s school administrators, parents, and students no longer see their value. Now most students have their own computing devices and the use of eBooks is on the rise; students can gather information anywhere, at any time. This book offers bold new ways to think about library spaces and suggests how libraries can provide the spaces needed to encourage students to explore learning. It also presents librarians with dynamic ideas and plans that can be used as a springboard for planning with school administrators, architects, and builders. The book identifies opportunities for creating spaces that support instructional models such as guided inquiry, examines technology skills needed after graduation, shows digital media hubs complementing maker spaces, and discusses how incorporating social media spaces into library design can encourage learning. The author guides librarians through the process of documenting the district learning goals in order to translate those specific goals into library space plans for an architect or interior designer. Readers will discover templates for flexible, up-to-date library designs that serve to not only improve students’ learning and critical thinking skills but also to emphasize the modern school librarian’s role in boosting academic achievement.

Abstract:
Through the work of the Italian architect, theorist and historian Paolo Portoghesi (1931-present), this book offers a new perspective on postmodern architecture, showing the agency of other spheres of knowledge – history, politics and media – in the making of postmodern architectural discourse. It explores how Portoghesi’s personal “postmodern project” is based on the triangulation of a renewed interest in historical architectural language, unprecedented use of media and intertwined links between architecture and politics. Organized in a sequence of critical chapters supported by the analysis of Portoghesi’s most significant architectural projects – including Casa Baldi (1959), The Mosque in Rome (1975–95) and his Strada Novissima exhibition (1980) – and publications, the book unfolds around the three main themes of history, politics and media. Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, the study features previously-unpublished archival material, interviews by the authors and articles from professional and mainstream press to present Portoghesi in his multifaceted role of mediator, politician, historian and designer.

Full text
Abstract:
We present here, for the first time in English, the inaugural lectures of two of the most influential architects of the first half of the twentieth century in Germany. Fritz Schumacher delivered his lecture in 1901 for his appointment at the Technical University in Dresden. Heinrich Tessenow gave his in winter semester 1920/21 to students of the Art Academy in Dresden. Both Schumacher and Tessenow were members of the German Werkbund and were involved in many architectural debates about the most urgent questions of their time, including those related to housing and the extension of cities. As architects, their production was considerable. They were also prolific and well-respected writers. Whereas Schumacher has become known internationally for his work planning the cities of Hamburg and Cologne, Tessenow became famous for his books on the construction of the simple house and the relationship between craftsmanship and the small village. The lectures are preceded by a scholarly essay by Hartmut Frank.

Abstract:
Murals are astonishingly common between the wars. In Britain they were less often created for private houses, because most people rented and moved frequently, but they were frequently commissioned for public spaces of all kinds. Like tapestries, murals were a form of decoration that modernist architects approved, because they were subordinate, without painting’s power to challenge. Decorators were also resistant to paintings. While many artists created murals, it is the work of Rex Whistler above all which encapsulates—in its fictiveness, whimsy, melancholy and effortless technical skill—much of what is distinctive about modern baroque.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at green business between the 1930s and the 1950s, when most policy-makers, voters, and consumers had little interest in the natural environment. It considers organic food, natural beauty, wind and solar energy, and architecture. This was a very challenging period for green entrepreneurship. Wind and solar were wholly unable to compete with conventional fuels. Most consumers had little interest in organic food or cosmetic products using plants rather than chemical ingredients. Ecological architects had few clients. The figures considered here all worked on the margins of the business world—some were downright eccentric—and they achieved little towards legitimizing their alternative views in the eyes of consumers and others. Yet in retrospect they were laying foundations for the future.

These accessions are the most adapted to the climate conditions of the Russian Northwest. Brief descriptions facilitate identification of varieties in the field. As a result of long-term research, accessions have been identified in the iris genepool to serve as sources of valuable agronomic traits, namely high ornamental value, winter hardiness, and resistance to fungal diseases. The catalogue is recommended to plant breeders, landscaping architects, and students majoring in agricultural disciplines.

The Conclusion applies the arguments of the book to a single design: Wren’s western portico of St. Paul’s Cathedral. In the process, the chapter uses Wren’s own method of analysing ancient architectural forms, and does what he did to various ancient buildings to his own most celebrated design. In the detail of the portico we can see how Wren used his knowledge (of ancient architecture) to produce invention in an architectural design, thus proving himself to be (by the standards of the day at least) an Architectus Ingenio.

Shasore, Neal. Designs on Democracy. Oxford University PressOxford, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192849724.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Designs on Democracy examines a pivotal period in the formation of the modern profession of architecture in Britain. It shows how architects sought to meet the newly articulated demands of a mass democracy in the wake of the First World War. It does so by providing a vivid picture of architectural culture in interwar London, the imperial metropolis, drawing on histories of design, practice, professionalism, and representation. Most accounts of this period tend to deal exclusively with the emergence of Modernism; this book takes a different approach, encompassing a much broader perspective on the liberal professional consensus that held sway, including architecture’s mainstream and its so-called avant-garde. Readers will encounter a number of unexpected narratives, episodes, and projects: from the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley to the rebuilding of Waterloo Bridge; from the impact of the Great Slump to the passing of the first Architects Registration Act (1931); from Trystan Edwards’s radical housing campaigns to the Londoners’ League’s unorthodox preservationism. Pulling in a range of evidence and sources—periodicals, exhibitions, photographs, and films, alongside architecture—it evokes architectural culture by listening carefully to the tenor of its discourse. Architecture’s public realm is thus analysed through sometimes surprising phrases: ‘manners’ to understand ideals of public propriety, ‘vigilance’ to explore public proprietorship, ‘slump’ to contextualize the emergence of public relations, ‘machine-craft’ to understand the forging of public institutions. The book spans the excitable discussions about the reconstruction of the profession for a democratic age after the First World War, to reconstruction and planning following the Second. Designs on Democracy provides an ambitious revision of how we can understand twentieth-century architecture in Britain.

Foerstel, Herbert N. Freedom of Information and the Right to Know. Greenwood, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400653889.

Full text
Abstract:
This examination of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) traces the American origins of the belief that the citizens of a democracy have a natural right to know about the workings of their government. The issue began in the colonies and came to a head in the 1950s when escalating government secrecy led the press to demand open government. Declaring that the public business is the public's business, a series of crusading newspaper editors aroused public support for the Freedom of Information Act which was passed in 1966. The book features in-depth interviews with the architects of the FOIA, the FOIA staff in the major federal agencies, and the most prominent FOIA users throughout the country. The concluding chapter examines current impediments to the full realization of the people's right to know.

Abstract:
This book provides an informal biography of the wunderkind who became one of America's greatest living artists and most well-known architects. Many are familiar with the art and architectural design work of Maya Lin, but the compelling details of her personal background are less well known. This book not only focuses upon Lin's substantial achievements throughout her life, but also presents Maya Lin's "prehistory," describing family events in China that led to her parents' flight to the United States. Author Donald Langmead guides readers through Lin's ancestry and family connections in precommunist China; her childhood and youth in Athens, Ohio; the story behind the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC; her career after 1982 (by decades); and emphasis on environmental conservation. Written for a young adult and general readership, Maya Lin: A Biography provides an up-to-date description of how she became one of the most famous and respected artists in America.

Abstract:
Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York City, is home to some of the United States’ most prominent Neo-Antique mausolea, which used Classical and Egyptian motifs in their architecture and decor. Using the lens of Classical archaeology, this paper undertakes a formal analysis of funerary architecture in specific tombs belonging to Jay Gould, Francis Garavan, William Leeds, the Goelet Brothers, Jules S. Bache, and F.W. Woolworth. This discussion examines the architecture of these tombs and their reception of ancient architecture alongside archival material. It also discusses individual patrons’ and architects’ motivations for requisitioning such forms. Finally, this analysis demonstrates that through the appropriation and redeployment of ancient architecture and motifs and through the landscape design of the tombs in Woodlawn, these mausolea were rich nexuses of public and private self-fashioning and place-making, and were an expression of elite culture.
