Full textThere are no one opinion about the determination of criminality. Most of the criminologists agree, that criminality is social-legal construct, which is bound up to development and variation of the social, demographic, political, moral, economical and legal situation. Eventually, criminality is social construct, the common result of different individual’s actions, and should be estimated according to historical condition. Women commit a small share of all crimes – in the year 2007 among all suspects, women comprised about 11 %. Women mostly commit offences against property - theft, robbery, and drug offences. 21-39 years old women, with basic or secondary education commit most of offences. Alcohol/drugs addiction, mental troubles are widespread among convicted women. Recently female criminality remains stable, except marginal increase in different sections. It is difficult compare female criminality in Lithuania with female criminality abroad, because of different legislation, penal system and criminal policy overall. Furthermore, historical, political, social, economical conditions, women position must be taken into consideration. Different criminological theories tried to explain female criminality concentrating on various factors, although the main explanations of female crime haven’t been proved.

Full textContemporary science considers physical activity as one of the guarantees for enhancing health, in particular providing prognosis on the level of chronic diseases (Lochman et al., 2008). Lack of movement has been under analysis for many years as a separate health problem, as it gives preconditions for overweight, obesity and other obesity related chronic health problems, such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, which in turn worsen the quality of a persons’ living, are dangerous for one’s life, altogether being a huge burden for the budget of health sector and economics in general (Bouchard et al., 1994, Parks et al., 2003). Thus, important task raised for the EU member states is to prepare national plans for the citizens’ physical activity reinforcement in order to change the unhealthy habits of population and help them to perceive the benefits of physical activity. “The strategy of Lithuanian citizens’ physical activity promotion for 2008-2020” (discussed in Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania) points out the fact that only less than one fourth of the adults and less than a half of children can be considered as an increase of people’s interest in personal physical education and physical fitness (Zuozienė, Rėklaitienė, 2010). The visitors of the sport club raise rather high requirements for the sport specialist, such as an attractive program, newest methodic, safe sport means and environment. Besides, individual approach to each of the client is necessary. Training... [to full text]

Full textPrivate sector of sport in Lithuania is expanding: in 2001 there were only 45 sport clubs and in 2005 this number has reached 100. At the moment in society is forming attitude that going to sport club is essential and part of status symbol. In association with growing number of sport clubs there are more people involving in sporting at leisure time. People attending private sport clubs usually are richer than those who get average incomes. There is also noticeable that these people give more attention to his/her appearance. Especially big attention to appearance gives women who are actively taking sports. Usually these women are wrongly evaluating their own weight (as they see themselves to heavy) and using various pharmacological conditioning to lose weight. This attitude leads these women to irrational ways of losing weight, as example: starvation, being on various unknown diets, inordinate exercising, depression and even derangement of eating habits. It is known that sporting can help to improve peoples own body evaluating; however there aren’t done enough that kind researches. It is not known how many people are dissatisfied of his/her own appearance and how with all this is related sporting. So in my research has been held this problematical question: are men and women who is taking sport at their leisure time evaluating their own appearance only positively? In consideration with problematic question there was brought hypothesis of research: men and women who is... [to full text]

Full textThe language of men and women in media texts is analysed in this master thesis. The two created corpora include texts since 2002 to 2009 and they have 3 177 706 words. The aim of the thesis is to investigate the language of men and women in media texts. The following tasks were raised to achieve this aim: to collect men and women articles and create corpora, to find out what specific features of both spoken and written language of men and women are, to analyze the specific features of men and women language, to examine gender differences in language developed on the basis of corpus data and find out whether it is possible to understand the author's gender from the identified text features. Full textFor many centuries maternity was considered as a magic woman’s state shrouded in mystery and rituals. In Lithuanian folklore the position of mother is held in the greatest regard (in Lithuanian folklore the goddess Žemyna is the embodiment of the Mother Earth). According to the Christian family traditions, the woman has to sacrifice herself for the sake of her husband and children, following the example of the self – sacrificing Virgin Mary. The society interpreted that as the only way of woman’s fulfilment. Such woman – mother image is often represented in the men - artists’ prose. Nevertheless, the interpretation has changed. The reflection of his can also be found in the literature, especially in women’s literature, where a woman herself speaks about maternity and womanhood. Feminism encouraged these changes as well. The aim of the analysis is to convey how the attitude towards maternity has changed, how a woman herself perceives and realises a different woman’s position, have been chosen, in the canter of which there is a woman – mother. The works are chosen and analysed in chronological order: from the beginning of the XX century to the XXI century. As a result, the maternity theme is considered in the work in historical and sociocultural aspect, accenting woman’s experience and female writing. In the analysis hermeneutical interpretation and feministic approach are used, on the basis of essential principle of feminism - woman’s reading of the literary work. In the first... [to full text]

Full textThe paper analyzes the descriptive representation of women in post-communist countries, that is, the factors determining the representation of women in parliaments in postsocialist states. The main problem is that women are underrepresented in the analyzed sample of countries. With the average of 17 percent, the number of women falls behind the world‘s average and lags severely behind Western countries. The paper sets its primary goal: to test a set of theories developed from studies of women‘s access to political power in Western democracies. I wished to see how those theories fared in a significantly different context, the newly developing democracies of post-communist space. Three hypotheses were raised: 1. The main factor, determining the representation of women in parliaments of post-communist states is the design of electoral system; 2. The prevailing patriarchal attitude towards the role of women in the society is important, but not the essential factor; 3. Socioeconomic conditions do not explain the variance of the proportion of women found in legislative institutions of post-communist countries. Three last elections of 17 electoral democracies of post-communist countries have been included in the analysis. The model of legislative recruitment process has been used as the main theoretical framework. This process is highly influenced by cultural, political and socioeconomic contexts within which it occurs. The dependent variable in the research is the number of women... [to full text]

Full textRamunė Bleizgienė‘s dissertaiton Female Identity Problem in Lithuanian Women’s Creative Writing in the Late 19th – Early 20th Century analyses identity as a result of an interaction between a person and his/her socio-cultural context, by raising a question how the development of modern Lithuanian society influenced the forms of female identity. A heterogeneous methodological perspective introduces a shift in female identity as an inseparable part of the process of women becoming public individuals. The exploration of creative texts by Žemaitė, Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė, Šatrijos Ragana, Ona Pleirytės-Puidienė Vaidilutė and Sofija Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė reveals how the writing women bring up and establish themselves as a speaking public subject. A thorough analysis of women’s writing, their diaries, letters, and memoirs reveals the ways in which the writing women experience their sociability, and emphasizes the impact that socio-cultural definitions of an individual/woman made on women’s self-perception. Structural changes in female identity undergo analysis in a condensed socio-cultural context with a review and a presentation of many texts by female authors that were circulating in public space, which gives a view of the multiple nature and complexity of the process. The study presents a lot of journalistic and fiction texts that were written in the late 19th – early 20th century, but were not in the scope of analysis up to the present moment.

Full textSocio-Economic Situation of Women in Countryside of Lithuania Summary This master‘s dissertation is focused on the situation of women from the territorial point of view, therefore women living in rural areas are emphasized here. Life in such areas has it‘s own particularity: air pollution is extended to a lesser degree, landscape is more picturesque and wider spread of nature – all those factors are typical of countryside. On the other hand, worse social facilities, less employment and career possibilities, complicated means of communication are more applicable in rural than in urban areas. The subject of rural women is not fully explored in scientific literature yet that’s why given information is not enough circumstantial and quite fragmentary. Topical issues usually dealt are poverty among rural women, bad living conditions, high workload, passive participation in social and cultural activities, increased young and educated women migration to cities. Because of these reasons women living in rural areas are facing a bigger probability to experience social exclusion. Full textGENDER-BASED PERSECUTION IN REFUGEE LAW Gender-based persecution is one of the most problematic aspects in Refugee Law, because gender-based persecution was not included as a separate ground of persecution in the 1951 m. Geneva Convention. Recently the number of application based on the gender-based persecution has greatly increased. However, unanimous opinion on gender-based persecution is still not found, thought particular standards are highly required. Furthermore, despite gender–based persecution could be related to persecution either suffered by women or men, almost in all the cases gender-based persecution is related to persecution suffered by women or girls, who most often face gender-specific forms of persecution. That is why gender-based persecution is analysed as persecution suffered by women in this paper. It should be noted that basically international acts and documents, legal doctrine and national jurisprudence are analysed in this paper, because in these sources the conception of gender-based persecution are best revealed. Therefore, this paper is divided in the parts, where the most problematic questions of gender-based persecution are discussed: gender-based persecution as persecution based on conventional grounds, that is, gender-based persecution as persecution because of membership of a particular social group, political opinion or religion; well-founded fear of gender-based persecution; acts considered as gender-based persecution; discrimination against... Full textXIX-ojo ir XX-ojo amžių sandūroje, Didžiojoje Britanijoje, iškilo modernistinis judėjimas, kuris ypatingai reiškėsi literatūroje. Modernizmo mokyklos pradininkai buvo rašytojų būrelis pasivadinęs imagist‘ų vardu. Vienas ryškiausių jų lyderių buvo Davidas Herbertas Lawrence‘as. Modernizmas atsisakė Viktorijinio stiliaus tikroviškumo ir vertybių bei pasiūlė visiškai kitokį mąstymą. D.Lawrence‘as pasiskelbė sekso revoliucionieriumi ir savo mintis išdėstė savo kūryboje.

Full textDepartment of History and Theory of Literature. There are only few diaries in Lithuanian literature written by women during war times. From the old times it was usual that the main attention is paid to the literature written by men, though women’s experience in war was revealed by such writers as Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė, Ana Frank, Marta Hillers, Julija Maceinė. The features of the genre reveal that diary is very similar to the autobiography, however in the diary are fixed the events of the previous day, and the writer is not intended to look into the past. Diary is the dated sketchbook, which fixates the memories of a day, week or other period of time, and they reveal the narrator’s feelings, emotions, and experience. In the war time diaries the link of history and documentation is very important, as it is full of historical testimony, descriptions of what happened, and the secondary attention is paid to the personal experience. The object of the present research is the story-telling women such as Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė, Julija Maceinienė, Marta Hillers and Ana Frank in war time diaries. The scientists that discussed the diary as a genre are Daujotytė, Kubilius, Glinskis. The aim of this research is to analyze woman’s and addressee’s relation, women’s experience during war, war “victim’s” image and relation with them in Ana Frank, Marta Hiller, Julija Maceinienė and Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė diaries by using semantic-structural analysis. According to Phillipe Lejeune... [to full text]
