Abstract:
This paper examines the representation of the mother figure in two modern tragedies, namely Blood Wedding (1932) by the Spanish dramatist Federico García Lorca and Mother Courage and Her Children (1939) by the German playwright Bertolt Brecht. The paper sheds light on the binary representation of maternity in both plays. Hence, it highlights how the mother figures are depicted as traditional, “natural” mothers who are caring and overprotective but simultaneously contradict the traditional mother archetype, rendering themselves “bad mothers.” It shows that the mothers sacrifice their motherhood or maternal love for the sake of the other side of the binary which is traditions, honor, and revenge in the case of the Mother in Blood Wedding whereas business and capital in the case of Anna Fierling in Mother Courage and her Children. Eventually, the other side of the binary, which is not motherhood, wins. To achieve its purpose, the paper examines the mother-son relationship in Blood Wedding as well as the mother-son and the mother-daughter relationship in Mother Courage and Her Children.

Abstract:
This dissertation interprets Brecht's Mutter Courage through its protagonist. Most interpreters have derived Courage's meaning from only one term of the contradiction of merchant and mother that constitutes her, either blaming the inhuman, war-mongering merchant for her participation in war, or defending the vital, productive, and nurturing mother for that same (unavoidable) participation. Some have stressed instead the unity formed by Courage's contradiction, without being able to elucidate its meaning. The present interpretation, proceeding from a clue given in scene 7 to the meaning of the text, draws parallels between the drama and Brecht's view of the world, and shows that the world of Mutter Courage is the symbolic representation of capitalism as Brecht knew it during the rise of fascism and the approach of the Second World War. Courage is then shown to be a concentrated form of this symbolic representation; indeed, she turns out to be a representation of capitalism in its "totality". This representation is inseparable from the invocation, through Courage, of the Great Mother archetype. The Great Mother describes a contradictory capitalism that is both a Good Mother in its promising productivity, and a Terrible Mother in its destructive warring and oppression; but she, as the symbol of Nature, also describes a capitalism that had begun to seem even to Brecht like a second Nature. Courage also represents the totality of capitalism (as the Marxist Brecht saw it) by embodying both its "affirmative" aspect (as a merchant who engenders soldiering sons), and (undermining the archetype of the Great Mother) its "critical" aspect as the representation of the resistance of the oppressed to their warring world (as the outlaw who engenders a daughter who rebels against war). A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Fine Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia Commonwealth University, 2015 Thesis Chair: David Leong Devising, Refining and Rehearsing in a 30 Year War is an account of the process of developing movement and choreography for the production of Mother Courage and her Children at Arena Stage in Washington D.C. It was my largest project during the two years I spent at Virginia Commonwealth University studying an MFA. The title reflects the chronological process that my mentor, director, and colleague David Leong and I went through to produce the work that earned a Helen Hayes Nomination for Outstanding Choreography in a Play. The show starred Kathleen Turner and was directed by acclaimed artistic director of the Arena Stage, Molly Smith. The demands of the work not only had serious responsibilities, but they also asked for a higher caliber of iv work than I had ever been a part of before. It proved to be the single most influential theatrical experience of my career. The movement work needed to be approached with great research and merit due to the highly stylized nature of the project and the national acclaim for it’s opening. This thesis documents that process and the successful outcome of the work which David Leong and I spent over 8 months on.

Using qualitative analysis, this thesis analyzes intergenerational support, conflict, and ambivalence between aging mothers and their middle aged adult daughters. In-depth interviews with 30 mother-daughter pairs explored respondents&
#8217
relationship history, changes in the relationship over the life course (childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, marriage of daughter, parenthood of daughter, widowhood of mother), social network composition, frequency of contact, expectations, type and frequency of intergenerational support, intimacy, compliance, conflict or disagreement, and comparison of self with the other party in terms of parenting styles and filial behaviors. Moreover, similarities and differences in the personalities of mother-daughter dyads were investigated from both mothers and daughters perspective. Participants reported that, there is an ample amount of intergenerational support between aging mothers and their adult daughters. Conflicts between mother-daughter pairs arise from interference, irritating personality traits and behaviors and differing views. Daughters experience more ambivalent feelings than mothers in their relationship. Both parties employ passive and secondary relationship maintenance tactics with the goal of preserving relationship harmony. Three distinct types of mother-daughter relationship emerged: close/peaceful, ambivalent and distant. Mother-daughter relationships have undergone transformations with life stages: daughters&

Abstract:
This study examines single mothers compared to coupled mothers and the differences in their public and private practices of religiosity. Data come from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, 2007 U.S. Religious Landscape Survey. The study explores the influence of marital status between single and coupled mothers by using regression models to control for income, age, education, and race. Findings suggest that, while there are differences in single and coupled mothers in both their public and private practices of religiosity, the cause of these differences is being driven by other social factors rather than marital status alone. Income, age, education, and race account for most of the differences between single and coupled mother’s religious practices.

There has been a transformation in family structure in Thailand due to the changes in economic and social structures over time. Though not recorded in census data the rise in single-parent families can be expected due to a rise in divorce rates, that have been recorded, over the past decades. However, the literature on single-parent families is limited and little is known about the experiences of single-mothers and children of singlemother families in Thailand. This study examines the factors that have major impacts on the well-being of children of single-parent families in Bangkok, Thailand. A qualitative methodology was employed to study the lived experiences from the point of views of 20 divorced single-mothers and 20 adult children from a different sample of divorced single-mother families in Bangkok, Thailand. Altogether 40 semistructured interviews were conducted in Bangkok, Thailand during June and July of 2010. Three theoretical frameworks, including family and household decision making theories, the life-course perspective, and the family composition perspective were applicable in this study to provide an understanding of how economic and social structures play an important role in the dissolution of marriages and how family composition plays an important role in the well-being of children. The findings of this study shed light on the lived experiences of participants and revealed the important factors that influence the well-being of children of single-mother families. The major factors include financial resources, parenting styles and discipline, and social supports. In addition, this study has implications for developing programs to assist and facilitate the well-being of single-parent families, strengthening the relationship within extended families, and eradicating the negative assumptions that are often associated with single-parent families.

Abstract:
Fatal vitamin K deficiency haemorrhage has been observed in breast fed babies. Though the incidence of vitamin K deficiency haemorrhage seems to be low in exclusively breastfed babies in Germany, subclinical vitamin K deficiency is by far more common as demonstrated in recent studies. Vitamin K concentrations in human milk are lower than in cow's milk and infant formula, however, nothing is known about the factors determinating the vitamin K1 concentrations in human milk. Vitamin K1 concentrations in human milk were studied during the first five weeks of lactation with respect to a) stage of lactation, b) interindividual differences, c) relationship of vitamin K1 to other lipids, and d) influence of oral supplements of vitamin K1 given to the mother. Milk samples from 9 mothers were collected on day 1,3,5,22,29 and 36 of lactation using standarized techniques.a) Vitamin K1 concentrations in colostral milk, day 1-5 (median 1,8 ng/ml) were significanctly higher than in mature milk, day 22-36 (median 1,1 ng/ml) (Wilcoxon U-Test p< 0,01). These changes during the course of lactation must be considered for estimation of the vitamin K supply in breastfed babies.b) Vitamin K concentrations both for colostral and mature milk were found to vary widely: colostral milk 0,6-4,4 ng/ml, mature milk 0,4 - 2,8 ng/ml.c) For colostral milk regression analyses revealed good correlations of vitamin K1 to cholesterol but none to total lipid and phospholipids, whereas no correlation to either lipid was observed for mature milk. Cholesterol appears to have a role in vitamin K1 secretion into colostral milk.d) Vitamin K1 concentrations of maternal milk were influenced by oral supplements given to the mother. Even with a dose of 100 μ vitamin K1 (similar to the dose which may be ingested with a meal) a twofold increase of the vitamin K1. content of breast milk was observed. These data suggest that mutritional factors may influence the vitamin concentration in human milk. Vitamin K supplements for breastfeeding mothers on vitamin K1 poor diets could improve the vitamin K supply of these babies.

Abstract:
In conjunction with a shift from an academic calendar based on ten–week quarters to one based on semesters, the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Ohio State University has completely re–designed the mechanical engineering curriculum. As a part of this re–design, the MAE department has added a new course for sophomores entering the department that will emphasize hands–on skills in machining and electronics while simultaneously giving students a broad introduction to the kinds of problems that mechanical engineers typically confront in industrial practice. This paper describes the evolution of our thinking as we created the teaching platform that is the heart of the course, a multi–cylinder compressed air motor. Lectures are structured to provide ‘just in time’ information to the students as they build and test this platform in the laboratory. It was crucial to create a device that would be complex enough to challenge the students and provide an opportunity to explore the widest possible range of mechanical engineering concepts. After a review of similar courses in other programs, we decided to employ a multi–cylinder compressed air motor, controlled by a commercially available microprocessor, as the teaching platform. Because the course will be required of all students entering the major, an overriding constraint on the design is that the device is simple enough for three hundred students a year, working in teams, to construct and test it. At the same time, the air motors must also be complex enough to support the learning objectives of this course and subsequent courses in the curriculum. Our final design is a direct–injection six–cylinder radial compressed air motor that is controlled by an Arduino© microprocessor. Students will spend five weeks machining and assembling the motors in the machine shop, another four weeks learning to program the Arduino© to control the motor, and the remainder of the term testing and analyzing the performance of the motors. The air motors allow us to introduce students to machine design, engine design, thermodynamics, fluid flow, vibrations, electronics, and controls. We have pilot tested this course twice, and find that the students quickly take ownership of the motors, and are quite interested in optimizing the design to improve performance.

Abstract:
At the Department of Engineering Technology at the University of Toledo we are working on introducing laboratory course in thermal-fluid sciences with the elements of controls. The objective is to create a course where the students will learn to see connections between the three branches of the thermal-fluid sciences and will learn to appreciate the integrated nature of modern systems. The proposed laboratory course will be structured around four “equipment centers” represented important areas of applications in the thermal-fluid sciences: 1) Armfield Modules (turbomachinery), 2) Steam Motor and Energy Conversion Set, 3) Modular Air Flow Laboratory, and 4) Experimental Heat Pump and Air Cooler. The students will take the course after they finish courses in Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics. The course will give our students an opportunity to observe how the concepts and principles learned in the classroom can be applied in a practical situation. To extend the instructional capability of the equipment and to give the students knowledge of modern instrumentation and control systems we use LabVIEW for computerization and automation of this laboratory. The experiments that have already been developed for the course as well as experiments that have been planned for the future are presented in the paper.

Abstract:
In a previous paper, the simulated loci of high-speed cornering did not correspond with experimentally obtained results because the tire model used only the sticking in the Coulomb friction model. If the centrifugal force becomes larger than the cornering force of the tires, then the vehicle does not maintain the desired course. The cornering force is affected by the sticking or slipping condition of the tires. In order to simulate the high-speed cornering trajectory, the present paper assumes three stages of friction: low kinetic friction force at the beginning of slipping, the period of kinetic friction force, and the return to the static friction condition at small slip angles. In addition to the Rear motor Rear drive (RR) type vehicle, the Front motor Front drive (FF) type vehicle with a Sensor Steering Mechanism (SSM) and a 4-wheel steering mechanism is developed. In the experiments of present paper, both of these robots are run on an oval course at high speed. Numerical simulation and experimental results indicate effective prediction by the friction model.

Abstract:
Teaching classical controls systems design to mechanical engineering students presents unique challenges. While most mechanical engineering programs prepare students to be well-versed in the application of physical principles and modeling aspects of physical systems, implementation of closed loop control and system-level analysis is lagging. It is not uncommon that students report difficulty in conceptualizing even common controls systems terms such as steady-state error and disturbance rejection. Typically, most courses focus on the theoretical analysis and modeling, but students are left asking the questions…How do I implement a phase-lead compensator? …What is a non-minimum phase system? This paper presents an innovative approach in teaching control systems design course based on the use of a low-cost apparatus that has the ability to directly communicate with MATLAB and its Simulink toolbox, allowing students to drag-and-drop controllers and immediately test their effect on the response of the physical plant. The setup consists of a DC micro-motor driving a propeller attached to a carbon-fiber rod. The angular displacement of the rod is measured with an analog potentiometer, which acts as the pivot point for the carbon fiber rod. The miniature circuit board is powered by the USB port of a laptop and communicates to the host computer using the a virtual COM port. MATLAB/Simulink communicates to the board using its serial port read/write blocks to command the motor and detect the deflection angle. This presentation describes a typical semester-long experimental protocol facilitated by the low-cost kit. The kit allows demonstration of classical PID, phase lead and lag controllers, as well as non-linear feedback linearization techniques. Comparison between student gains before and after the introduction of the mechatronic kits are also provided.

Abstract:
Recent findings from the Kids Activity and Learning Study complement North Carolina’s multidimensional approach to promoting school readiness by emphasizing the integrated nature of motor and cognitive development in early childhood. Children whose motor skills improved the most over the course of an academic year also tended to demonstrate the biggest gains in executive function and numeracy skills. Children who participated in adaptive, group-based motor skill activities demonstrated gains in motor competence, executive function, and numeracy skills. Incorporating motor activities into established classroom practices has the potential to facilitate multiple aspects of children’s development and promote school readiness. The brief includes specific recommendations for early childhood educators.
