Abstract:
The author explored the concept of mutuality, as perceived by daughters, in the mother-daughter relationship and its impact on the self-esteem and social adjustment of the adolescent daughter. Data were gathered from three schools of higher learning. A sample of 239 respondents, 18–22 years of age, was utilized. Findings supported the study hypothesis that a positive relationship exists between an adolescent daughter's perceived mutuality in the mother–daughter relationship and the daughter's self-esteem and social adjustment. This research represents an important step in the understanding of the mother–daughter relationship and its role in the development of young women and has implications for social work practice.

Abstract:
The mother-daughter relationship is the most beautiful and innocent relationship in this world. A mother does every possible thing to make her child happy. The relationship between a mother and daughter has considered one of the sweetest relationships on the planet because a daughter reflects the character and nature of her mother. In most of the cases, daughter is just the carbon copy of her mother. A child rests well in the mother's lap because it is the safest abode for the child. A child, especially a girl child is always special to her mother and vice-versa, but the feeling of being an individual gets ruined when a relationship between a mother and her daughter loses the balance. Relationships are based on trust, belief and love, and these three aspects are essential for the survival of any healthy relationship. Connections can either be made or can be broken, based on these three elements. The plays Tara and Thirty Days in September, written by the dramatist Mahesh Dattani, talk about the relationship between a mother and a daughter and the games also deal with the psychological mindset of the mother(s) and the daughter(s) and their sufferings in the urban society of India.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine mother-daughter relationships and their individual perceptions of autonomy, intimacy, conflict, and quality of relationship. For 221 matched pairs of postadolescent females and their mothers, scores on autonomy were explored in relation to ratings of intimacy, conflict, and quality of relationship. Multiple regression analysis for daughters yielded two significant predictor variables for quality of relationship, conflict and one measure of autonomy. The regression for mothers yielded two significant predictor variables, conflict and intimacy. Implications for these findings were discussed in relation to development of identity of mothers and their adult daughters.

Abstract:
Beginning with mother/daughter film classics such as Stella Dallas (1937) and Mildred Pierce (1945), and moving to consider recent mother/daughter texts, Anywhere But Here (1999) and "Gilmore Girls" (2000 -), this thesis, in both its written and visual components, examines the multiple and often contradictory ways in which mothers and daughters have been represented in popular culture. Challenging the discourses that singularly stress struggle and separation, this research highlights representations that emphasize mother/daughter connection, and examines how such identification empowers mothers and daughters. This project is guided by cultural studies and feminist film theories. The first two chapters outline past and present paradigms of mothers and daughters respectively; the third chapter examines the goals and findings of the visual component.

Sen, Chandra. "A phenomenological exploration of the mother-daughter relationships during and after father-daughter incestuous abuse of the daughter." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31518.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the nature of the relationship between mothers and their incestuously abused daughters. The research sample consisted of five adult daughters who in their childhood and/or adolescence, were abused by their biological fathers. The volunteer participants were in therapy at the time of the research interviews. The study employed a phenomenological method in order to allow the daughters to describe their experiences and perceptions of their mothers. By engaging in a dialogue with the daughters, the researcher attempted to explore the dynamics and impact of the mother-daughter relationships on the daughters. Results confirmed that these mother-daughter relationships were damaged. However, the daughters also expressed strong desires to heal their relationships with their mothers. In addition, the daughters identified important connections between their relationships with their mothers and the continued influence of this relationship on their experience of themselves in their current lives. The findings of this study have important research and therapeutic implications. The research findings strongly suggest that the relationship between daughters and their mothers in families where father-daughter incest occurs needs to be examined beyond individual family member's roles which have been the exclusive focus of existing research. Furthermore, the strong connections made by the participants of the present study between their relationships with their mothers and their sense of self, may be an important consideration in therapeutic work with this client population.

Abstract:
In this hermeneutic phenomenological study, a purposive sample of 12 religious women considered their experiences of religiosity with their mothers and larger family systems. Adult daughters reflected on the significance and meaning of religion in their lives and relationships, particularly the interaction of mothers and adult daughters concerning spirituality, beliefs, and experiences including intergenerational transmission of religiosity. Adult daughters were queried regarding maternal religious influence and the challenges of being women. Data were collected to saturation and analyzed to consider individual narratives about families into the development of three themes: Family Connections, Religious Consciousness, and Encountering Community. Gilligan's theory of moral development, including the ethic of caretaking, is employed to consider religiosity in the adult daughter-mother relationship. Limitations, clinical implications, and future directions are explored.

Abstract:
This chapter describes a process where mothers are essential to the replication of a particular cultural model of authority and yet also challenge the very structure that they work to support. It refers to the Babylonian Talmud and its depiction of mother–daughter relationships in two cycles of talmudic narratives, which argues that the Talmud uses this relationship to promote the value of father–husbands leaving home to study Torah. It also looks at the centrality and power of the father–son relationship that is disrupted when sons become disciples of male rabbinic masters. The chapter discusses mothers who are portrayed as a success when transmitting to their daughters the value of sending husbands off to study with a master. It emphasizes that the mother–daughter relationship becomes crucial to the creation and replication of a society that valorizes rabbinic authority and the ideal of Torah study.
