Abstract:
This chapter discusses the premise that understanding the Form of the Good is the unintended end or purpose of philosophic inquiry in the sense of Plato’s functional teleology of action. It begins the presentation of this theme by introducing the three images that Socrates uses to convey his beliefs about the Form of the Good: the Sun, the Divided Line, and the Cave. A motif common to these images is the role of vision as an analogue to knowledge. Plato’s theory of vision in the Timaeus is examined in detail. The image of the Divided Line in particular conveys the thought that we exercise visi

Chapter 3 makes a new suggestion about the categories of inclusion operative in Joseph and Aseneth: Aseneth is anachronistically incorporated into the covenant forged by Israel’s “living God” at Sinai. Joseph and Aseneth’s portrayal of Israel’s “living God” as giver of life to Aseneth, a foreigner originally external to the covenant, is a revision of a Deuteronomic literary motif surrounding the epithet. Deuteronomy’s “living God” exercises ultimate authority over who lives and who dies and uses this prerogative, in part, to separate Israel from other nations. Joseph and Aseneth engaged and ad

Abstract:
This is the first scholarly art-historical appraisal of Anglo-Saxon coinage, from its inception in the late sixth century to Offa's second reform of the penny c.792. Outside numismatic circles, this material has largely been ignored because of its complexity, yet artistically this is the most vibrant period of English coinage, with die-cutters showing flair and innovation and employing hundreds of different designs in their work. By analysing the iconography of the early coinage, this book intends to introduce its rich legacy to a wide audience. Anna Gannon divides the designs of the coins int

Abstract Despite its small size, epigram attracted some of the best poetic talents of antiquity, exerting a strong influence on Latin literature and continuing to inspire poetic creativity till our days. During the last decades research on epigram flourished to an unprecedented degree. This book draws on and engages with this renewed scholarly interest in the briefest of the ancient Greek genres. By shifting focus away from a particular poet, collection, and the epigrammatic production of a specific historical period, it explores diachronically erotic epigram from various interpretative angles

Abstract:
This chapter by Oskar Verkaaik explores a neglected comparison between Urdu-speaking Mohajir support for the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), and Mohajir membership in the Dawat-i-Islami proselytizing movement in the nineties. Initially Verkaaik outlines some superficial differences that mark this comparison. Whereas the MQM comprises a political party and ethnic movement, the Dawat-i-Islami condemns politics and promotes Islam as an antidote to ethnic strife. Although the two movements are partial adversaries, both depart from a singular notion of Mohajir religiosity that is rooted in the mode

To do so, it focuses on a recurring feature of evidence-based writings: the management-as-medicine motif (MAMM). Advocates draw on MAMM in two ways. First, they promote the same model of knowledge production as in medicine, e.g. championing ‘systematic reviews’. Second, they rely on comparisons between management and medicine as professional practices. Identified here are consequent problems and a ‘systematic review’ is considered in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. This concerns a ma

Chapter 3 focuses on apocalyptic motifs which are present in Donatist writings from the early years of the schism. This was a period bracketed by two persecutions; that of Constantine, which ended c.321, and the “Macarian” repression, which lasted from 347 to 361. Accordingly, of the five documents which will be examined in this chapter, two are martyrological acta dating to the Macarian era. The other two are sermons: one a commemoration of Constantinian martyrs likely composed sometime around the 330s, and the other a Christmas sermon delivered either during or soon after the time of Macariu

Cartwright, Kent. Shakespeare and the Comedy of Enchantment. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198868897.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Shakespeare and the Comedy of Enchantment explores the encounter between comedy’s rationalizing dimensions and those extra-rational aspects that elude demystification and exert affective power, an encounter between what is explicable and what is inexplicable. In the context of modernist disenchantment, Shakespeare’s comedies showcase the play of wonder and doubt, leaving behind a sense of residual re-enchantment. The argument thus broadens the perspective of studies that align early modern comedy with developments in science and jurisprudence. As the comic action advances, elements of mystery
