An exception is the motif of the older man on his – usually small – farm who lives from and with his bees. The article shows that this motif is a topos that appears in various texts of Greek and Latin literature of the imperial period. Depending on the intention behind these representations, different elements of the motif may be emphasised or omitted. The representation of the Sea is subject to the “dictatorship of the Imagination”. According to his will, Michaux changes seascapes, personifies fishes and oisters, allows the soul to swim. The sea also inspires a lot of metaphors, particularly developed in the mescalinian texts. Abstract:
Abstract The triple head motif is a visual composition consisting of three heads on a single neck, with three noses, three mouths, but often only one pair of eyes. It appears on at least twenty-four medieval misericords, as well as in other contemporary artistic media throughout Europe. The motif is probably of Celtic origin although it existed also in ancient Greece and Rome. In this article I claim that the usual interpretation of this motif on choir stalls, the Trinity, is incorrect. Other possibilities are: the God Janus, the virtue of Prudence, intensity of emotion, the three ages of man,

One of the defining characteristics that separate humans from animals is the number of legs. The ‘all fours’ motif receives an original interpretation in Leonid Andreev’s oeuvre. The artistic realization of this motif is found in the depiction of Doctor Kerzhentsev’s anguish and temptation (in the short story ‘A Thought’ [‘Mysl’]), the Tsar’s ‘intentional beastliness’ (‘From Centuries Ago’ [‘Iz glubiny vekov’]), and the reverse evolution of the beast and the man in the play A Thought. The vestiges of the motif are found in the hero’s handstand in ‘The Red Laugh’ [‘Krasniy smekh’], the scene of

The article begins with an analysis of two works of art: the photography Self Portrait as a Drowned Man by Hippolyte Bayard (1839–1840), which is one of the fi rst photographs in history, and the painting The Wounded Man by Gustave Courbet (1845–1854). Both these images use the same iconographic theme: the death of the author. This comparison leads to a refl ection about the intersections of photography and death, in an artistic as well as an anthropological sense. The similarity of the subject of both the works, and their rootedness in the time of creation, induce a variety of questions: what

Set on the banks of a toxic river, Mariana Enriquez's story ‘Under the Black Water’ depicts an impoverished community in which babies are born as human-animal mutants and teenagers are drowned by the police only to return as undead zombies. This is a story in which necropolitical injustices and the suffering of coloniality, globalization and neoliberal capitalism are located within a world rendered barely livable by the catastrophic environmental destruction of this triad of anthropogenic forces. The reality of the world is characterized by a cheesy seduction of attraction (temptation) that is very tempting every human. Temptations are full of charm, interesting, and contain a tremendous magnetism. Among the existing seductions, the appeal of power, sex, and wealth are three types of temptations that most often attract human attention. When a man drowned to follow the temptations, sooner or later he will experience individual and social destruction. Human tends to be selfish, hedonistic, and power abusive. A fragment of Mycenaean pictorial pottery, unprovenanced and now in Florence, is published. It depicts, partly preserved, a man standing between two (chariot ?) horses. This is the so-called horse-leader motif, illustrated on only one or two other Mycenaean vases but well-known from late Geometric Argive and Attic vase painting. It is suggested that the reappearance of the motif in the 8th cent. B.C. may be explained not as inspired by surviving Mycenaean models but as an independent creation.
