Full textThe purpose of this study was to analyse the relationship between the discipline strategies shown by the teacher to keep discipline in the physical education classroom, dispositional goal orientation, self-determined motivation and the perception of physical self-concept. The sample consisted of 736 subjects aged between 14 and 17, studying at secondary schools in the Region of Murcia. The scales used were: strategies to sustain discipline in the classroom, perception of success questionnaire, sport motivation scale and physical self-concept questionnaire. The main conclusions were that students with a higher self-determined motivation were more task-oriented and had a more positive perception of their physical self-concept (determined by external reasons), and were grouped in self-determined profiles. Those who do sport and physical activities outside school show more self-determined motivation, more task orientation and more sport competence and physical fitness. The boys demonstrate more perception of their sport competence and their physical fitness, and they are more ego-oriented than the girls. The girls perceive more responsibility in the strategies their teacher uses in class to maintain discipline than the boys do.

Full textThe objective of this research is to analyze within the framework of the Theory of Self-Determination the relationship between the motivational context promoted by the teacher (support for autonomy and control), types of student motivation (autonomous and controlled), the use of learning strategies (superficial and deep level) and academic performance in the area of mathematics. The sample consisted of 396 Basic Education students from the public sector (43.2% were men and 56.8% women) who were in the 4th year of secondary education in four schools of UGEL 03 in the Breña district of Metropolitan Lima. The instruments used in the present investigation showed optimal psychometric conditions (evidences of validity and reliability). The data were analyzed through correlations, linear and multiple regressions to identify the relationship between the variables involved in the research model (motivational context, types of motivation and learning strategies) and the dependent variable (student performance in the area of mathematics). The results of the linear regressions showed that the variables of autonomy support, autonomous motivation and the elaboration strategy predict performance positively; while the controlled motivation and age variables predict performance negatively. However, when the relation of these variables was analyzed in a multiple regression, in order to determine the best predictor variables on the performance, these were the autonomous motivation, controlled motivation and age.

Full textBased on self-determination theory, the present study aimed to explore the interplay between students’ perception of their teacher’ autonomy support, student’s type of motivation (autonomous or controlled) and the use of learning strategies (rehearsal and critical thinking). The sample was composed by 221 accounting students from a private university of Lima. It was found that the students’ positive perception of teacher’s autonomy support related to autonomous motivation for the course (r = .28, p < .001). It was also found that students’ positive perception of teacher’s autonomy support positively related with the use of the two learning strategies evaluated, but in greater extent with the use of critical thinking (r = .29, p < .001) than with the use of rehearsal (r = .12, p < .05). Likewise, it was found that autonomous motivation for the course related positively and in greater extent with the use of critical thinking (r = .37, p < .001) than with the use of rehearsal (r = .28, p < .001) learning strategy. In contrary, controlled motivation for the course only related positive and significantly with the use of rehearsal (r = .11, p < .05). These results and their implications will be discussed.

Full textThe present study, based on Self-determination Theory, examines the relationship between the motivational teaching style perceived by the student, their academic motivation and the types of engagement to their learning. The sample consisted of 851 students of a management program from a private university in Lima. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), we studied the relationships of the "Bright side" pattern (where perceived autonomy support is expected to be linked to the autonomous motivation of the student, agentic and behavioral engagement), and the relationships of the "Dark side" pattern (where perceived controlling teaching is expected to be linked to controlled motivation, lack of agent engagement, lack of behavioral engagement and text anxiety). The model showed good fit indices (X2(245)=752.64 (p<,01), RMSEA=.050, SRMR=.051, CFI=.96). On the one hand, consistent with the “Bright side” pattern, the results showed a positive relationship between perceived autonomy-supportive teaching, agentic and behavioral engagement, mediated by autonomous motivation. On the other hand, consistent with the "Dark side" pattern, positive and significant relationships between the perceived controlling teaching, lack of agent and behavioral engagement, and test anxiety, being mediated by controlled motivation and amotivation were found. Finally, this study shows that the motivational style of the teacher predicts the quality of student’s motivation, and consequently, his/her engagement towards learning. For future research, among others, it is recommended to use other sources of information, such as classroom observation, to recognize the motivational style of the teacher and to explore the engagement that the student presents to the learning, through the teacher's perception about it

Full textBased on the Goal Orientation Theory, the objective of this research was to know the relationship between the kind of goal orientation adopted and the academic performance obtained by a group of students from secondary level on single-gender classrooms and mixed classrooms. The sample was conformed of 385 students from first to fifth grade of secondary school, who voluntarily participated in this research. Two Goal Orientation Scales were adapted, one for Mathematics and the other one for Spanish. Besides that, in order to determine the students’ academic performance, the averages in both school subjects were employed. After the application and the statistic analysis of outcomes, it was found that there is a positive relationship between the academic performance and task orientation as well as the self-enhancing ego orientation. It was also detected a negative relationship with avoidance orientation, but self-defeating ego orientation was not associated to academic performance in neither of the subjects.

Full textThe purpose of this research is to study the relationship among motivational teaching styles (autonomy support vs. control), types of motivation (autonomous/control), selfefficacy, agentic engagement, and mathematics academic achievement in a sample of university students from Lima. The sample was composed of 165 students from two public universities of Metropolitan Lima from different careers in science and mathematics. The instruments used in this study had good evidences of validity and reliability. Corresponding correlations and path analyses were conducted to explain the direct effects of the variables. It was found that the teaching styles of autonomy support and control positively predicted autonomous motivation and control motivation, respectively. Also, the perception of autonomy support teaching style predicts self-efficacy and agentic engagement. Autonomous motivation is a mediator variable between the teaching style of autonomy support and self-efficacy. The relationship between academic achievement and the perception of autonomy support teaching style is mediated by self-efficacy. Also, this variable mediated the relationship between the teaching style of autonomy support and agentic engagement. On the other hand, the relationship between perception of control teaching style and agentic disengagement is mediated by the control motivation. Finally, results are discussed and recommendations, limitations and future lines research suggestions are provided.

Full textThe current paper is a descriptive work that examines the occupational motivations of students in their first semester at a private technical institute in Lima, using a scale designed to measure said construct. The sample for this study consists of 292 students who were in their first semester studying three majors: Business Administration, International Business Administration, and Marketing. They were given the Occupational Motivation Scale (ESMO). This scale, which consisted of 42 items categorized into 5 factors after performing a factor analysis, was found to be valid and reliable for the studied sample for measuring the occupational motivations of students. The findings indicate that the principal occupational motivations of the majority of the participants with regard to their choice of major are "Fulfillment and Autonomy," "Development and Reward," and "Success and Recognition"; while "Pro-social Orientation" and "Family Relationships" were the least relevant. In addition to the above, the "Conglomerate analysis" determined the formation of four characteristic groups. The students who belonged to the same group were as similar as possible to one another; while students from different groups were as different from one another as possible. A longitudinal analysis was carried out on the conditions regarding completion or desertion by the participants who achieved four semesters of study. Finally, no significant differences related to sex, age or chosen profession was found among the participants. Therefore, we conclude that it is not necessary to establish scales for said Variables.

Full textBased on the Self-determination Theory, this study examines the relationship between the motivating teaching style (autonomy support and control), types of motivation (autonomous and controlled), academic emotions (enjoyment and anxiety) and academic performance in mathematics, in 269 students from 5th and 9th grade from two private schools of Lima. We also studied differences in motivating style, types of motivation and academic emotions in both grades. Additionally, we analyzed the psychometric properties of the instruments and they were valid and reliable. All the variables on the bright side of motivation (perceived autonomy support, autonomous motivation and enjoyment) correlated with each other and were positively related to academic performance. Likewise, those on the dark side (perceived controlling style, controlled motivation and anxiety) were related to each other and were negatively associated with performance. The path analysis indicated that the perceived motivating style predicts the type of motivation, this predicts the academic emotions and finally these are predictors of academic performance, both on the bright and the dark side. Additionally, a relationship between motivating style and academic emotions, mediated by the type of motivation, was found.

Full textThe main aim of this research is identify how University professors are being motivated to take part in training process that help them to improve their teaching skills, furthermore, to compare and contrast between those who have finished with others that left their training program. The target group were professors from a private university of Lima, who were enrolled in teacher training courses, either in response to the offer that was made to the university or because they sought it voluntarily. We applied a phenomenological qualitative methodology in which information was gathered through in depth interviews to ensure a real coverage about the teacher's personal process in their motivation, decision-making and commitment to the teacher training programs in which they were enrolled, but not before signing an informed consent that explain the main objectives of the research. The transcripts of the interviews were analyzed with the support of Atlas-ti. The results evidenced that there is a difference between the type of teacher’s motivation and how they perceive their work in the classroom. As a result of it, they consider to start and go ahead with the trainings in which they have registered, in addition to the constancy that they have in them; creating a profile for each group of participants that have motivation, perception of teaching work and training programs as determining factors. Likewise, the discussion shows the impact, limitations and suggestions of the study based of the analysis carried out.

Full textDual immersion is an educational option that is very popular in the United States and Canada and is emerging as a new educational format within the new multilingual educational settings worldwide. Since the creative potential of a language is expressed primarily through the literary and musical heritage in its various manifestations, the teacher who teaches a foreign language should, therefore, provide students with significant models that integrate both the heritage of the language as well as those paths of the cultural history of the countries with which the students identify themselves. Based on this, we conducted a qualitative research from an ethnographic perspective, by implementing a Didactic Sequence where Spanish learners saw their cultures reflected, which would be the case of the learners of Spanish as the home language (E/L1) and the learners of Spanish as a heritage language (E/LH), and on the other hand, the learners of Spanish as a second language (E/L2) saw reflected as well the different cultures of the target language. With the ultimate aim to motivate the learning of Spanish as well as analyze the possible change in attitude towards the target language and/or refine their linguistic and cultural identity over an entire academic year. Twelve third-graders at Thomas Edison Charter Academy in San Francisco, California, were subject of such a study. The results of this research are intended to shed light on the impact that integrating the cultural component could have on learning a foreign language, and the importance that the students´ voices are heard in the classroom through their multimodal tasks and their individual oral presentations.

Full textThe aim of this research was to study the psychometric properties of the Situations in Schools questionnaire in a sample of 178 college teachers. The questionnaire, originally designed for school teachers, has 4 scales theoretically related: autonomy support, control, structure, chaos. For this study, the questionnaire was translated and adapted to the college context, an exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted, the instrument´s internal consistency was analyzed, as well as the correlations between scales and the descriptive statistics. Also, a Multidimensional Scaling was used to explore the similarities of the items and to locate them in a multidimensional space. The results show that the 4-scale model was suitable for the questionnaire. However, item 1 showed lower factor loading than the rest of the item so it´s advisable to study it meticulously. The Multidimensional Scaling organized the items into 3 main groups: (1) control scale items, (2) chaos scale items and (3) autonomy support and structure items. Finally, there is a strong positive correlation between structure and autonomy-support, a moderate negative correlation between structure and chaos, and a mild positive correlation between structure and chaos and between chaos and control.

Full textDespite the value that learning mathematics has for the development of formal thought, there is a tendency of difficulties by students in basic school levels to apply this knowledge. Based on this, this study explores from Self-Determination Theory the relationships between teacher’s autonomy supportive and controlling style perceived by students, autonomous and controlled types of motivation, self-efficacy, anxiety and performance in mathematics in 302 fourth and fifth grade primary students from a private educational institution in Lima, intentionally selected. In addition, this study examines the psychometric properties of the instruments used, the differences according to sex with respect to self-efficacy and anxiety, and the differences in the variables of the study according to the grouping by student performance. The results indicate adequate evidence of validity and reliability of the instruments in the sample. The analysis of correlations allows us to proceed with the path analysis, in which it is found that the perception of teacher’s autonomy support predicts in a positive and indirect way the performance in mathematics, mediated by autonomous motivation and self-efficacy. On the other hand, it is found that the perception of controlling teaching predicts in a negative and indirect way the performance in mathematics, mediated by controlled motivation and selfefficacy. No significant differences are found according to sex for self-efficacy and anxiety. Significant differences are found between the students in the highest and lowest performance groups for the perception of teacher control, controlled motivation, self-efficacy and anxiety. The results are discussed in relation to the trends of the bright side and the dark side of motivation towards mathematics.

Full text-- Learning a second language methodological alternatives at the University does not satisfy the requirements of this level. Thus the Integral Synergic Methodology, methodological proposal for Learning English as a Second Language tries to fill this gap. This methodology includes three factors: student teacher and didactical materials. Essentially it is a methodology for adults where the teacher is not only the conductor and guide of contents but also all didactical materials are according to the students objectives, becoming the main point in the developing learning tasks proposed by the teacher. But we believe that learning items, for the student (an adult), go beyond a methodology. There is one more factor: “motivation” or “warm up”. The thesis implies both factors as decisive ones in a Second Language Learning “quality” by under graduated students. The experimental phase was developed with students of School Business Management at UNMSM

Full text--- The purpose of this study was to establish the existence of significant relationships between dimensions and areas of Family Social Environments and the types and subtypes of Academic Motivation and Demotivation using 378 students in 3rd. and 4th. grades of High schools from the Consortium of Catholic schools in Metropolitan Lima. The study was correlational and through probability sampling, considering inclusion and exclusion criteria, it was possible to obtain a stratified sample, representative of the population. Data collection was done with the Family Environment Scale of Moos and Academic Motivation Scale of Vallerand which was adapted and psychometrically analyzed for reliability and validity in our setting. The results demonstrate that cohesion, relationships, achievement orientation, intellectual-cultural orientation, social-recreational, moral-religious, system maintenance, organization and family control correlate significantly and positively with intrinsic academic motivation, extrinsic and its subtypes, and significantly but inversely with demotivation. The conflict is the only area that inversely correlated with the types and subtypes of academic motivation. Results are discussed in terms of Social Ecology Approach and the Theory of Self-Determination. Keywords: Family social environments, academic motivation, intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, demotivation, Social Ecology Approach, Theory of Self-Determination.

Full textThe purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship between maternal positive (ACP) and negative (ACN) conditional regard, parental autonomy support, motivation, academic engagement and perfectionism in 484 high school students from schools in Callao. Adequate values of the psychometric properties of the instruments used were also shown. This study validated the scale of parental conditional regard since it was one of its objectives. Through path analysis, the model showed a suitable fit index [X² (8) = 17.77, p = .08, RMSEA = .05, CFI = .99, SRMR = .02]. Thus, the perception of parental autonomy support was associated with academic engagement and adaptive perfectionism, this relationship was mediated by motivation. In addition, the perception of ACP was associated with lack of engagement and maladaptive perfectionism, with controlled motivation as the mediating variable. In addition, it was found that ACP is associated with adaptive perfectionism and academic engagement, through the mediation of autonomous motivation. The ACN was not related to controlled motivation but was directly associated with maladaptive perfectionism and lack of academic engagement. Likewise, the results showed that the perception of parental autonomy support was not negatively related to controlled motivation, and that control practices were not negatively related to autonomous motivation. Thus, the scope and limitations of these findings are discussed in the light of the theory of the "bright" and "dark" side of motivation. For future research, it is recommended to compare the parenting practices of mothers and fathers. Finally, this study is relevant to the extent that it highlights the role of parents in the academic field, even though they do not have a direct presence in classrooms. Key words: parental control practices, autonomy support, perfectionism, motivation, academic engagement.

Full textGrounded in Self-Determination Theory, this study explored the relationships between teachers' autonomy supportive and controlling style, satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs, and agentic and behavioural engagement in 235 students from fourth and fifth grade from a private school in Lima. This study also examined the psychometric properties of the instruments finding optimum evidences of validity and reliability in the sample. Perceived teachers' autonomy support positively associated with satisfaction of basic psychological needs (r = .20, p < .01), behavioural engagement (r = .12, p < .05), and agentic engagement (r = .12, p < .05). Moreover, perceived controlling teaching correlated positively with frustration of basic psychological needs (r = .23, p < .001) and negatively with behavioural (r = -.17, p < .01) and agentic (r = -.19, p < .01) engagement. A path analysis indicated that the relationship between perceived autonomy support and engagement is mediated by the satisfaction of basic psychological needs. On the other hand, perceived controlling teaching shows a direct and negative path towards agentic and behavioural engagement without mediation of the basic psychological needs. Results are discussed using the notion of a bright and dark side of motivation whilst reading during library visits.

The results largely supported the reliability and the validity of the scale in both cultures as well as its cross-cultural equivalence except for three problematic items found in the Chinese sample. Moreover, Chinese adolescents scored higher in more self-determined motivation (i.e., intrinsic motivation and identified regulation) and lower in less self-determined motivation (i.e., introjected regulation, external regulation, and amotivation) than Spanish adolescents. In study 2 we measured motivation toward Physical Education through Perceived Locus of Causality Scale and academic stress through Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents among Chinese adolescents (n = 556) at the beginning of the semester and 3 months later. Less self-determined motivation was found to be positively related to all academic stress factors except for the negative relationship between amotivation and worry about grade during second data collection. However, more self-determined motivation was found to be negatively related to pressure from study, workload, and despondency, but positively related to worry about grades. In addition, identified regulation positively predicted worry about grades while amotivation positively predicted workload and despondency. Meanwhile, despondency negatively predicted identified regulation. Overall, the findings supported the motivation structure based on Self-Determination Theory in Chinese Physical Education context in line with the universality of the motivation structure. The problematic items and mean difference between China and Spain suggested that despite of the universal structure, the measurement model may not be the same across cultures which requires further examination and adaptation of the motivation measurement based on Self-Determination Theory. Related to the specific academic context in China, these results supported the generalization of relationship between motivation based on Self-Determination Theory and stress across Physical Education and academic contexts which highlight the importance of motivation in physical education not only in promoting students´ physical activity but also in improving academic experiences.

Full textDue to the change in the way of studying that COVID-19 has generated, this study focuses on analyzing the use of authentic material, that is, the use of journalistic texts in the motivation of SFL students in a high school with distance education in Sweden. Thus, the objective of this research is to identify the topics that cause the greatest interest in students, show how journalistic articles influence their motivation by using them more frequently and, finally, expose the effect that journalistic texts have on the motivation of a SFL class in a high school in Sweden. The choice of this topic was given by the scarcity of studies that relate the motivational aspects and distance studies in high school students in Sweden. This study is qualitative in nature, applying the open-ended interview method to 10 participants who studied Spanish as a FL in physical classes for a month and then went on to distance classes. The results indicate that students feel the need to use effective material that keeps them interested in learning SFL according to their linguistic levels.

Full textBased on Self-Determination Theory, the aim of the present study was to examine the relationships between the motivational teaching style perceived by the student (autonomysupportive and psychological control), satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs, academic burnout and academic engagement. The sample was composed of 252 students of the two first years from a private university in Lima. The instruments used for the measurement of the constructs were the Learning Climate Questionnaire, the Psychologically Controlling Teaching Questionnaire, the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale, the Maslach Burnout Inventory Students Survey (MBI-SS) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale for Students (UWES-S-9). The instruments presented optimum evidences of validity and reliability in the sample. The path analysis found that the motivational teaching style of autonomy-supportive is significantly and positively related to academic engagement mediated by the satisfaction of basic psychological needs of the students. On the other hand, was found the positively significant relationship between the motivational teaching style of psychological control and the academic burnout mediated by the frustration of the basic psychological needs of the students. In addition, was found the negative relationship between the satisfaction of basic psychological needs and academic burnout, as well as the negative relationship between the frustration of basic psychological needs and academic engagement. The results were discussed and the recommendations were made based on the findings.

Full textThis work intends to broaden the knowledge about the cognitive-motivational variables referred to the reader; the main objective was to test the relation between reading comprehension and causal attributions. We use a descriptive correlational design in this cross-sectional study. Two tests were applied, the Reading Comprehension Competences Assessment Test (ECLE - 3) and the Attributive Style Questionnaire (EAT), in a purposive sample of 208 third grade high school students, 72 students were from private schools and 136 were from public schools in Lima city. The results show that the reading comprehension performance relates significantly, in the negative direction, to the attribution of failure to professor and the outsourcing – uncontrollability of academic failure by the attribution to bad luck; besides, statistically differences were found on reading comprehension performance considering public and private schools, in favor of private school students. In light of the outcome, it follows that in greater presence of causal attributions that explain the academic failure using factors outside oneself, it tends to display lower reading comprehension outputs.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to explain –within the framework of the Self-Determination Theory– the motivational mechanisms that predict two opposing sets of outcomes: one adaptive (academic engagement: behavioral, cognitive, agentic and emotional) and another non-adaptive (avoidance strategies: self-handicapping, avoidance of novelty and avoidance of help seeking) in relation to the Mathematics area. The sample consisted in 1027 students (56.1% women) from tenth grade of secondary school from 16 schools (14 public and two private) coming from 13 districts of Metropolitan Lima. The instruments used in this research showed good evidences of validity and reliability in this sample. Correlations and structural equation modeling were conducted to test the proposed hypotheses. The results showed that the autonomy supportive teaching style and the controlling teaching style (as perceived by students) positively predicted students’ autonomous and controlled motivation, respectively. Autonomous motivation positively predicted the four types of engagement and negatively the avoidance of novelty and help seeking. Controlled motivation positively predicted the three avoidance strategies and negatively emotional engagement. Finally, it was found that autonomous motivation partially mediated the relationship between autonomy support teaching style and cognitive, agentic and emotional engagement. Moreover, controlled motivation partially mediated the relationship between the teacher’s controlling style and the three avoidance strategies. Results are discussed in connection with the assumptions and evidences of the theory and its educational implications.

Full textIn recent years, there have been an increase of concern for the teaching of English in Lationamérica and Perú, due to the greater demand for the mastery of that language in the market. Given its importance, the present research, based on Self-Determination Theory, studies the relationship between the perception of motivational styles used by an English teacher, the motivation of the students of that course, the test anxiety and the academic self-efficacy in the English course. The sample consisted of 391 4th and 5th year high school students of both sexes from a private school in Metropolitan Lima. After carrying out descriptive and correlational analysis, the hypothetical model studied through the path analysis demonstrates results consistent with the research hypotheses (raised according to what was indicated by SDT). The results found were as expected and are consistent with what TAD indicated, confirming that the perception of an autonomy support teacher motivational style, positively predicts a motivation of better quality for the student (autonomous motivation) in the English course, and consequently, it has a negative effect on test anxiety and self-efficacy, which affects the achievement of the goals proposed for the course. Finally, the perception of teacher psychological control was also a significant predictor of student demotivation. At the end of this study, the results are discussed and recommendations, research limitations and future lines of work are given.

Full textThe main objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between Academic procrastination and types of Academic motivation. Therefore, the Escala de Procrastinación Académica (EPA) and the Escala de Motivación Educativa (EME) were applied to a sample of 139 young students aged 18 to 28 (M=19.68; DE=1.98) from a private university in Lima, where 81 were women (58.3%) and 58 were men (41.7%). Likewise, the specific objectives were to compare the levels of Academic procrastination and types of Academic motivation according to the sex variable; as well as identifying the relationship between academic performance and both variables mentioned before. The results show significant and inverse correlations between Academic procrastination scores and the intrinsic motivation scores (to knowledge, achievement and stimulating experiences), Identified and Introjected regulation; as well as a significant and positive correlation with Amotivation. Regarding the first specific objective, significant and inverse correlations were found between academic performance and academic procrastination, as well as direct correlations with the types of Intrinsic motivation, Identified and Introjected regulation. In relation to the second and third specific objective, a correlation was found between procrastination and amotivation with a larger size in men, and they also have significantly higher scores in these variables, compared to women. The results are discussed taking into account the Theory of Self-Determination, the concept of self-regulation, factors associated with amotivation and measures of academic performance, all this considering the findings of this research and the revised literature.

Full textThe purpose of this research was to study, considering the types of motivation (described in the Self-Determination Theory) and self-efficacy, the best predictor of academic procrastination in a group of high school students. 301 high school students from two private institutions of Metropolitan Lima participated, who were mostly women (57.5%). Also, the psychometric properties of the instruments used were analyzed, and evidence of validity and reliability of the instruments used was found on the sample used. It was found that controlled motivation predicted academic procrastination significantly and positively (β = .15**, t = 2.78), while autonomous motivation predicted it significantly and negatively (β = -.41***, t = -7.59). Contrary to what was expected, self-efficacy was not a significant predictor of academic procrastination (β = -.06, t = -1.10, n.s.).
