Abstract:
AbstractMathematical problem-solving-based collaborative learning’s (MPSCL) unique teaching value has attracted much attention among those interested in integrating “21st-century skills” in mathematics education and promoting practical and innovative talents. But learning improvement during this activity is still challenging because of some students’ lower learning efficiency and poor performance in collaborative problem-solving. Collaborative knowledge building (CKB) emphasises that students exchange views, discuss, negotiate, solve problems, and create valuable public knowledge for the team, and has become an important perspective reflecting this learning process and learning quality. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to investigate junior high school students’ CKB process based on a comparison of high- and low-performance groups’ mathematical problem-solving. Design-based method was adapted to implement the experimental investigation. Choosing “Xiaoming’s Apartment” as a sample learning task, we evaluated the quality of the problem-solving solutions from 29 groups in three classes, selecting 48 students from 12 groups as research participants. The analysis framework was developed to analyse 3,244 interactive dialogues in more than 90,000 transcripts. Results suggest that students could carry out CKB as the core in general, and their CKB went through six stages, reached a deep level, and had a variety of interactive modes. But the proportion of discussion for knowledge building, “sublimation viewpoints,” and knowledge building of deep level in high-performance groups is higher than the low-performance groups, and the high-performance groups show a good spiral in the process of viewpoints evolution. The findings of these CKB characteristics provide evidence for enhancing MPSCL.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines the significance of socioeconomic background (SES) for the educational dispositions and aspirations of Finnish comprehensive school leavers. After demonstrating the existence of the relationship between the students’ SES background and their dispositions and aspirations, the main question addressed is whether this relationship changes when controlling for the effect of students’ academic ability as measured by their literacy skills. In our examination, we draw on a study of 15-year-old lower secondary school students (n = 1058) in Turku sub-region consisting of the city of Turku and ten smaller, surrounding municipalities. The results of our study are mixed. Students with high-level literacy skills have positive dispositions towards learning and education despite their socioeconomic background. The same is, however, not the case with educational aspirations. Among low-SES students, individual ability does not predict high educational aspirations in a similar manner that it does among high-SES students. This finding poses a challenge for the Finnish education system. If SES is a more significant predictor of educational aspirations of an individual than ability or motivation, there are negative effects for both individuals themselves and society. From the individual point of view, self-exclusion of gifted low-SES students from higher education decreases their future labour market opportunities and outcomes. From the societal point of view, in turn, it means that many occupational fields will lose potentially talented and skilful employees. In these respects, the Finnish education system would not only be unequal but also inefficient.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter, we study the determinants of student drop-out decisions using data on a cohort of over 230,000 students enrolled in the Italian university system. The empirical analysis reveals that the probability of dropping out of university negatively correlates with high school grades and student age, controlling for the course of study and university fixed effects. The benchmark estimation suggests a negative correlation between high school final grade and drop-out probability. We also find that enrolling late at the university increases the likelihood of dropping out. In line with the literature, our results suggest that women have a lower propensity to drop out. Our dataset allows differentiating between students who leave their homes to enroll at university (off-site students) and on-site students. We find that off-site students drop out significantly less than those who study in their hometowns. We provide significant evidence that off-site students are a self-selected sample of the total population. Accordingly, we use an instrumental variable (IV) approach to identify the causal relationship. The IV estimation shows that studying off-site negatively affects drop-out decisions and more so for students growing up in the south of Italy who typically study off-site in the Center-North of Italy. Taking advantage of a more detailed dataset concerning students enrolled at the Università di Sassari, we show that the choice of the degree is also important to predict the magnitude of drop-out. Specifically, we resort to a bivariate probit specification to account for self-selection into the course of study, finding that the estimates of the determinants of drop-out and the predicted probabilities are heavily affected. Accounting for self-selection, we show that an unconditional comparison among degrees is misleading, as some degrees attract more heterogeneous students than others, as far as skills and motivation are concerned. For instance, regarding the effect of gender, we show that while the estimation without selection suggests that women drop out less, once we account for selection, the contribution of women to drop-out becomes either positive or negative, depending on which course of study they choose. In line with these results, policymakers should tailor drop-out reducing policy interventions to the specificities of each course of study.

Abstract:
Secondary schools are complex in structure and are challenged daily to provide high-quality, effective Response to Intervention (RTI) models in their school settings. RTI must be handled very differently in a middle or high school compared to an elementary school, and larger numbers of students, stricter time constraints, lack of resources, and larger academic gaps are among the typical obstacles secondary teachers face, including math teachers. However, there are RTI models that will work well in math classes, including the Adolescent Mathematics Intervention Structure (AMIS), which focuses on providing motivation, opportunities for academic discourse, cooperative learning, and a positive mathematical classroom environment. Additionally, students thrive in a mathematical learning environment that includes a focus on multiple representations for the mathematics, manipulatives, and targeted learning centers designed specifically for middle and high school students. This chapter focuses on discussing AMIS and providing recommendations for its implementation in secondary math classes.
