Abstract:
The motivation will drive the EFL learners to be successful in reading. This study examined the Indonesian EFL learners’ motivation in reading activity based on Deci and Ryans’ theory of motivation including intrinsic and extrinsic. This study employed mixed-method design. The data obtained by distributing questionnaire and arranging the group interviewed. The subject of the study involved 42 freshmen students of English department, the faculty of humanities at Jember University in the academic year 2015-2016. The results found that both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations have significant contribution in motivating the learners to read the English text. The intrinsic motivation played the important role in students’ reading activities. Besides, the extrinsic motivation found the teacher’s role as the learners’ motivator in reading the English text through their method implemented in the reading class.

Abstract:
Among many existing motivational theories, perhaps Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theories are widely known. This theory passes a message to us that once a person passes a certain level of need, he is no longer motivated by the level of motivation below. This provides an understanding that a manager or leader or motivator in the organization should know what is needed by subordinates. The need of a daily production worker with staff of managerial staff is different. To provide motivation that can improve performance to both, a motivator must provide different treatment according to their needs.

Abstract:
This article is a discussion of the motivations for pilgrimage and it will draw upon theories of motivation to explore the continuing attraction of pilgrimage in contemporary times. This discussion is located within the field of Event Management. Event Management is a fast growing discipline which focuses on the design, production and management of planned events, such as festivals, celebrations, conferences, fund-raisers and so on. Clearly pilgrimages, as planned events, fit into this definition. In this context, it is essential to recognise the importance of understanding the motives and needs of event customers so that we can plan to help our customers satisfy their motives. Whilst it might seem abhorrent and commercial to talk of pilgrims as customers, pilgrimages and religious sites have become more and more commodified and increasingly are deemed to need professional management. Key theories of motivation will be compared in order to identify the prime motivating factors underpinning people’s decisions to make pilgrimages.

Abstract:
The article examines the relevant native and foreign theories of sports activity (SA) motivation. The results of scientific research in this area are analyzed, recommendations for identifying the type and increasing the level of motivation of athletes are presented. Theoretical analysis and generalization of literary data allowed to single out individual demonstrations in the formation of sports motivation, the importance of the influence of self-esteem, the influence of temperament, the influence of the level of anxiety in athletes on the formation of motivation was established. The conditions for the formation of sports motivation have been determined. For high results in sports, the motivation of the athlete at all stages of training has a significant impact. The focus on interpersonal comparison and victory develops competitive motivation, competitiveness. The development of internal and external motivation ensures the formation of goals and objectives of sports activities, favorable stable motives, and leads to the improvement of sports skills. Based on the current literary discussion, we have identified the motives that presumably provide long-term motivation for engaging in sports and the motives that are likely to be perceived as reducing it.

Xenikou, Athena. "Attributional theory, organisational culture and motivation." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1995. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317967/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns the effect of attributions for failing in a creativity task and organisational culture (OC) on motivation to engage in similar tasks. In chapter one the relationship between situational attributions, attributional style (AS), and motivation is reviewed. A reformulation of Amabile's model of the social psychology of creativity is suggested on the grounds of recent developments in attributional theory. An extension of Amabile's theory is also proposed by investigating various social facilitators of creativity. In order for the proposed extension of Amabile's theory to be further elaborated within the organisational setting, the effect of organisational culture on creativity and innovation is reviewed in chapter two. Five studies were conducted to test a series of hypotheses derived from the above research. In study one, the moderating role of situational attributions in the relationship between failure and subsequent motivation was empirically shown in terms of the refined attributional theory of Weiner. Since the literature in AS has questioned the psychometric properties of the various measures of the concept, study two concerns the development of a more reliable and valid measure of AS. Results showed that a generalised expectancy for negative events is a predictor of low confidence and pessimism. In study three the new measure of AS was used to test for the hypothesised influence of AS on after-failure motivation through its effect on situational attributions. The suggested extension of Amabile's social psychology of creativity was also tested by examining whether pro-creativity social norms facilitate creative behaviour. The findings demonstrate that the globality facet of AS and the perceived social norms for creativity determine the perception of situational attributions, which in turn predicts the level of after-failure motivation. In order to examine the effect of social norms on motivation to be creative in the organisational setting, organisational norms as a manifestation of OC had to be measured. The fourth study was a psychometric assessment of four questionnaire measures of OC which showed the more reliable and valid measure to use. In addition, study four provided some evidence that the organisational norms of creativity, internal co-operation, and achievement constitute the cultural dimension of openness to change, while the norms of centralisation of power and competition are associated with resistance to change. The fmal study investigated the effect of OC on employees motivation to be creative through the mediating effect of situational attributions for failure and expectancy of future success. The hypotheses of this study were partly supported. The final chapter discusses the findings and the limitations of this thesis, drawing out possible implications for future research.

Abstract:
This thesis explores generation Y motivators. They are a growing group of young people among the general workforce, and they have different behavior and motivators at work. This paper explores effective motivating factors for this group of employees by studying a company, LinkedIn, which successfully motivates generation Y employees. Data is gathered through several interviews done with LinkedIn employees working at their Dublin office. The data is analyzed with the help of a motivational theory called self-determination theory and its main concepts autonomy, relatedness and competence. Other insights from earlier studies done on generation Y motivation are used to support the analysis as well. The results and analysis are consistent with theory and earlier studies, and can even show some interesting factors generation Y employees value, such as high value for manager flexibility and sharing similar values with the company they work for.

Jones, Paula Satne. "Kant's theory of motivation and rational agency." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.498792.

Abstract:
It is clear that Kant's theory of motivation plays a central role in his ethical theory' as a whole. Nevertheless, it has been subjected to many interpretations: (i) the 'orthodox' interpretation, (ii) the 'Aristotelian' or 'Humean' interpretation and (iii) the 'rationalist' interpretation. The first part of the thesis aims to provide an interpretation of Kant's theory of rational agency and motivation. I argue that the 'orthodox' and 'Aristotelian' interpretations should be rejected because they are incompatible with Kant's conception of freedom, defending an account of Kant's position that goes along the lines of the rationalist interpretation. I show that Kant's theory of motivation is committed to a form of cognitivism, that is, the cognitive aspects of a motive are always the active factors in motivation.

Abstract:
This article-based compilation thesis revisits the link between public service motivation (PSM) and ethics. PSM, or the motivation to give back to society, and ethics, or the study of what is morally right and wrong, are two crucial topics in public administration and management. Although being originally interrelated, past research mainly examined the role PSM plays in shaping the likelihood of whistle-blowing and making donations. However, very little efforts have been devoted to insert PSM in ethics philosophy theories, to explore the ethical dark-side of PSM, to insert PSM in moral psychology theories, to connect PSM with integrity violations theory, to differentiate the effects of PSM on un/ethical outcomes from those of other work-motivations, and to assess the indirect impact of PSM-antecedents on un/ethical outcomes. To fill all these gaps, this thesis puts individuals’ values and identities at the centre of the discussion about how ethical attitudes and behaviours can be encouraged. Four articles have been developed following this idea. The first article offers a theoretical framework to examine the relationship between PSM and ethics by combining ethics philosophy, identity, moral psychological and self-determination theories. The second and third articles link PSM to integrity violations literature, and provide empirical analyses showing the distinct effects of PSM and other work-motivations on the acceptance of unethical acts. Moreover, they assess the direct impact of basic psychological needs satisfaction and goal clarity on PSM, and the indirect one on the judgement of integrity violations. The fourth article provides initial empirical support to the conceptualization of PSM offered in the first article by examining the distinct effects of transactional and transformational leadership, and the basic psychological need of relatedness on PSM. In sum, by theoretically developing and empirically testing the importance of how individuals ‘are,’ this thesis orders previous research in the PSM-ethics field, and encourages new avenues.

Albert, Erin. "Achievement Motivation Theory as a Model for Explaining College Athletes' Grit." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2020. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1707327/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the direct and indirect associations of the perceived coach-created motivational climate, athletes' implicit theory, and athletes' achievement goal orientation in relation to their levels of grit. Five hundred twenty-three Division I and II collegiate student-athletes (male = 246, female = 277) from five institutions across the south-central and southeast areas of the United States completed self-report measures assessing the previously described constructs. The measurement model fit the data well (SRMR = .055; CFI = .938; RMSEA = .067) and demonstrated invariance across the male and female athletes. The structural model demonstrated adequate fit (SRMR = .088; CFI = .918; RMSEA = .068). All direct and indirect paths in the model were significant in the expected direction, with the exception of the direct path from entity theory to ego goal orientation and the indirect path from ego-involving climate to ego goal orientation through entity theory, which were both non-significant. The mastery-incremental constructs accounted for 65% of the variance in grit. Results indicate that achievement motivation theory is an appropriate framework through which to examine grit, and achievement motivation constructs may be significant antecedents of grit's development. Limitations and future directions are discussed.

Abstract:
Gamification, i.e. the integration of game design elements into a non-gaming environment, aims to increase users’ engagement and motivation to achieve their goals regarding a given task. It is placed at the border between formal and informal learning approaches. Motivational difficulties are well known in educational settings, especially in Computer Science, where strict formal content meets very playful computer gamers. Hence, we followed the approach of gamification to raise the motivation of learners in the field of Business Process Management (BPM) lifecycle. We developed a board rallye game, based on 16 game design elements. The core of the rallye game is to convey knowledge in a playful way. In order to be able to determine the effects of the rallye game on several aspects, e.g. knowledge transfer and (learning) motivation, we carried out field experiments with 57 students at the Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt and at the Hochschule Augsburg. In this paper the perspective of self-determination theory (SDT), that has found general acceptance in motivational research, is used to understand and analyze the motivational power of gamification.

Abstract:
Theoretical foundations and existent practical experience in providing scientifically grounded management of students' independent study activities with the use of the latest information technologies have been studied in the research. The issues of organization of various types of management of students' independent study activities have been considered. It has been reported, that there are direct, indirect, and dynamic types of management. The possibilities of ICTs in the implementation of each type of management the students' independent study activities have been shown. It has been taken into account, that the introduction of computer-oriented means of co-management and co-organization into the educational process reflects the realization student-centered concept of learning. There has been emphasized the need to use both direct and indirect types of management, which will make it possible for students to move to the position of an actor of independent study activity and capable of exercising self-government. The authors have been paid special attention to the means of developing the students' personality and forming their motivational readiness for independent study activities and self-education. It has been shown, that such necessary means include the following: to promote the development of students' self-organization, self-actualization, as well as their socialization, to encourage self-assessment and reflection throughout the process of organizing independent study activities; to personalize independent study activities, to offer personally and professionally meaningful learning tasks with clearly defined and understandable goals for a student, and to ensure their gradual complication; to create informative feedback; to strengthen students' motivation.

Vlaicu, Razvan, and Philip Keefer. Employee Trust and Performance Constraints in Public Sector Organizations. Inter-American Development Bank, September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004456.

Full text
Abstract:
Theory suggests that employee trust is key to productivity in organizations, but empirical evidence documenting links between trust and constraints on performance is scarce. This paper analyzes self-collected data on public sector employees from eighteen Latin American countries and finds that individual-level trust is relevant to three types of performance factors. First, high-trust employees are more willing to collaborate and share information with coworkers and are more supportive of technological innovation. Second, high-trust respondents have different perceptions of organizational constraints: they are less concerned with low staff quality or lack of discretion to innovate, and more concerned with staff shortages. Third, trust in coworkers is associated with stronger mission motivation. Instrumental variable strategies based on the transmission of trust through social and professional channels account for potential sources of endogeneity. A survey experiment on preferences for social distancing policies provides further evidence that trust enhances mission motivation: employee policy preferences align better with the implied government policy when their trust in the public sector is higher.

Abstract:
Armed groups tax. Journalistic accounts often include a tone of surprise about this fact, while policy reports tend to strike a tone of alarm, highlighting the link between armed group taxation and ongoing conflict. Policymakers often focus on targeting the mechanisms of armed group taxation as part of their conflict strategy, often described as ‘following the money’. We argue that what is instead needed is a deeper understanding of the nuanced realities of armed group taxation, the motivations behind it, and the implications it has for an armed group’s relationship with civilian and diaspora populations, as well as the broader international community. This paper builds on two distinct literatures, on armed groups and on taxation, to provide the first systematic exploration into the motivation of armed group taxation. Based on a review of the diverse practices of how armed groups tax, we highlight that a full account of their motivation needs to go beyond revenue collection, and engage with key themes around legitimacy, population control, institution building, and the performance of public authority. We problematise common approaches towards armed group taxation and state-building, and outline key questions of a new research agenda.
