van Hooft, Edwin. Motivation and Self-Regulation in Job Search: A Theory of Planned Job Search Behavior. Edited by Ute-Christine Klehe and Edwin van Hooft. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199764921.013.010.

Abstract:
Job search is a difficult and complex process that demands prolonged motivation and self-regulation. Integrating insights from generic motivation theories and the job search literature, a Theory of Planned Job Search Behavior (TPJSB) is introduced as a framework for organizing the motivational and self-regulatory predictors and mechanisms that are important in the job search process. The chapter specifically focuses on the motivation-related concepts in the TPJSB, distinguishing between global-level, contextual, and situational predictors of job search intentions and job search behavior. After describing the theoretical underpinnings, empirical support for the associations in the model is presented and reviewed, and recommendations for future research are provided. Last, the moderating role of broader context factors on the TPJSB relations is discussed.

Abstract:
The same event that appeared unpredictable in foresight can be judged as predictable in hindsight. Hindsight bias clouds judgments in all areas of life, including legal decisions, medical diagnoses, consumer satisfaction, sporting events, and election outcomes. We discuss three theoretical constructs related to hindsight bias: memory, reconstruction bias, and motivation. Attempts to recall foresight knowledge fail because newly acquired knowledge affects memory either directly or indirectly by biasing attempts to reconstruct foresight knowledge. On a metacognitive level, overconfidence and surprise contribute to hindsight bias. Overconfidence in knowledge increases hindsight bias whereas a well-calibrated confidence reduces hindsight bias. Motivational factors also contribute to hindsight bias by making positive and negative outcomes appear more or less likely, depending on a variety of factors. We review hindsight bias theories and discuss three exciting directions for future research.

Abstract:
The theories in this chapter address the following general questions in everyday circumstances and others characterized by the absence of entrenched emotional conflicts: When are people most likely to think through their actions? And what can we do about it? How do people make decisions? And how can we use this knowledge to be more persuasive? What circumstances provide the greatest motivation for people to act? And how can we cultivate these conditions? Each theory is summarized succinctly and followed by guidance on how to apply it to real world problem solving. This guidance includes when each theory might be most (or least) applicable and specific ideas for how to use it.

Abstract:
Kelman’s tripartite model organizes advances in research on social influence and clinical outcomes. Recent years have produced important advances in the field’s understanding of compliance, identification, and internalization. In compliance research, normative feedback has, under some conditions, altered clinically relevant behaviors, including drug abuse and gambling. In identification research, the therapeutic alliance has predicted 5–30 percent of the variance in clinical outcomes. Evidence suggests a causal relationship between alliance and outcomes, and that ruptured alliances can be repaired. Internalization theories from basic science have generated little recent clinical application research, but a clinician-developed approach to internalization, motivational interviewing, has generated substantial recent research. Though mixed, enough evidence supports motivational interviewing to warrant additional research.
