Abstract:
This article attempts to elate aspects of our commonsense understanding of motivation to an emerging, mechanistic account of motivation in neuroscience. It identifies various points in the neural process where motivational control will have an opportunity to play a role. It suggests that these points of influence occur in the early stages of planning a course of action by sequencing a set of subgoals, at the stage of action selection when the type of instrumental action to be performed is chosen and at the stage of online action correction when adjustments are made in the midst of performance.

Abstract:
Both contemporaries and later historians have seen the mass surrenders of 1941 as a ‘plebiscite’ against Soviet power. This chapter investigates the extent to which this thesis can be supported by empirical evidence. It analyses the reasons for defection and shows that defeatism and the will to survive this war were slightly more important than political considerations. While a large minority was indeed opposed to Stalinism and motivated to go over to the enemy by their politics, only a radical minority wanted to take up arms against the Soviet side. The large majority, thus, were refugees fro

Abstract:
Gamers are not a monolithic group; gaming preferences and motivations vary in important ways among gamers. An empirical, validated model of gaming motivations provides a crucial methodological bridge between player preferences and their in-game behaviours, and, more importantly, engagement and retention outcomes. Instead of simply seeing on a key performance indicator dashboard that a certain percentage of gamers are leaving, a motivation model allows us to pinpoint why those gamers are leaving.

Abstract:
This article discusses an alternative approach to gaining compliance with the law. The approach involves motivating people through appeals to their values. Values reflect people's assessments of what is right or appropriate to do in a given situation; this involves people's feelings of obligation and responsibility to others. There are two arguments for value-based motivation. First, we gain the benefits of a value-based approach, e.g. increasing voluntary cooperation. Second, we avoid the problems associated with instrumental approaches. To gain these advantages we need to move to a system in

Abstract:
This chapter describes and defends an account of virtuous motivation that differs from what one might call ordinary moral motivation. It is possible to be morally motivated without being virtuously motivated. The first half of the chapter explores different senses of moral motivation and the philosophical puzzles and problems it poses. The second half gives an account of virtuous motivation that, unlike ordinary moral motivation, requires the motivational structure characteristic of a fully virtuous person. It draws on Aristotle’s account of virtuous action to argue that a fully virtuous agent
